Minicamp Practice Notes Day 2

June 12th, 2024

QBs Kyle Trask and Baker Mayfield listen to instructions from Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen today.

One more day of underwear football and the Bucs will scatter like flushed quail throughout the globe enjoining their final weeks of freedom until training camp opens in late July.

Yes, it is still underwear football. No hitting allowed of any sort. But dang it, when quarterbacks are throwing to receivers and defensive backs are blitzing (before they stop near the quarterback), Joe will take what he can get in mid-June.

Some practice viewing was heavily screened but Joe has highlights below.

* Team leader and Bucs franchise icon Randy Gregory was not at mandatory minicamp for his second straight day of unexcused absence. After practice, Bucs coach Todd Bowles declined comment on Gregory when asked if he had spoken with him, saying he will coach the guys that show up.

* Joe really, really, really wants to chug the Kool-Aid on this rookie receiver Jalen McMillan. The coaches love him (so far) and he continues to make plays. In underwear football. McMillan wasted no time today catching two straight passes from Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield in 11-on-11 play, one on the left sideline in a crowd and the other on the right sideline. The only reason Joe hasn’t jumped with all fours into the McMillan pool is the vivid memory of how Kenny Bell and Tommy Streeter dominated underwear football. We know how that ended.

* Kyle Trask hits Kameron Johnson, the pride of Graham Barton University, down the left seam about 25-30 yards. Pretty pass, solid catch. Keep Johnson’s name in the back of your mind for training camp (ahem).

* Tight end David Wells catches a Trask pass down the right seam. This guy Wells seems like he’s been with the Bucs for about five years.

* Mayfield threads the needle to the left and the ball is just off the fingers of Chris Godwin who was coming in from the left sideline.

* Easy now, rookie. Slow your roll. Looked like a blown coverage as McMillan catches a pass down the right sideline and All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield raced over to make the “tackle” and end the play. McMillan tries to juke Winfield. Let’s not try to bite off more than you can chew, Rook. Mr. Winfield will let you know what you can get away with.

* A Sean Tucker sighting! Orange Nation rejoices as Tucker runs up the middle.

* Trask throws long down the left seam for Devin Culp and the pass is off his hands. Culp then buries his head in his hands not believing he didn’t haul in the pass.

* Mayfield connects with tight end Ryan Miller on consecutive plays, first down the right sideline and then the left sideline.

* Joe sees Tristan Wirfs and veteran offensive coach Tom Moore in a long conversation as both Hawkeyes watch practice behind the offense.

* Mayfield pumps and pumps and tries to hit Godwin down the left sideline on a short pass. Christian Izien jumped the route and nearly had a pick.

* Still not yet 100 percent recovered from knee surgery last month, Bowles is watching practice from a golf cart. Joe did notice him walk away from his post-practice press conference into the building without any aid or cane.

* Cade Otton reaches out, skies and catches a pass from Mayfield with his back turned to the line in the far left corner of the end zone. All the white jerseys (offense) erupted celebrating a tough touchdown catch.

* Mayfield drops back to pass and if this were a game Joe isn’t sure Mayfield would still have his head connected to his neck. Winfield races in from the right side and would have beheaded him if there was hitting.

* Sterling Shephard is wide open down the middle and couldn’t hang on to a Mayfield pass. He holds his head in the universal sign of shame.

* Mayfield hits the immortal Raleigh Webb (The Citadel) in the left flat.

* Dang, maybe it’s just Joe but it appears Payne Durham has slimmed down.

* Mayfield threads the needle in a crowd connecting maybe 20 yards over the middle with Johnson.

* Trask repositions Bucky Irving then throws left and it is almost picked by Andrew Hayes (Central Arkansas).

    “Bucs franchise icon Randy Gregory”

    lmfao

  2. John Sinclear Says:

“as Sean uycker runs up the middle” We need to PRACTICE that ??

  3. Dude Says:

Don’t kill me about this, but Payne Durham probably has the broadest catch radius on the team and gives me Joe Jurevicius vibes, but from the TE position.

  4. BakerFan Says:

Where are the idiots saying Trask outplayed Mayfield, I know they want to post it up.

  5. NCBuc Says:

Well BakerFan, looks like they played about even. You read the same thing that I read, right? Don’t get all bent out of shape. Nobody expects Trask to be the guy, just that Mayfield needs to be better.

  6. Roadsoda Says:

“…the immortal Raleigh Webb…” Why the unnecessary passive aggressive dig at a guy just trying to play football and earn his way onto a professional roster? It’s not funny. It’s weak. Here’s an idea: Mix in the term “underwear football” a few more thousand times. That definitely wouldn’t be weak.

  7. Crickett Baker Says:

Thanks for the great notes. It sounds like an exciting practice.

  8. A Bucs Fan Says:

Chase Edmonds said that Johnson kid will make the team. He reminds him of Randall Cobb.

  9. HC Grover Says:

TX for these great posts Joe.

  10. heyjude Says:

Thank you Joe. Your notes are done so well it is almost like being there. With more practicing, Shepard will get better. Winfield racing, the McMillan and Winfield connection, Otton and the TD celebration, and all the rest. Love it!

  11. JimBobBuc Says:

Great to hear we are practicing our drops early. Focus on Palmers drops or is he saving them For the regular season?

  12. Kgh4life Says:

Culp is known to have butter fingers.

  13. Dude Says:

Watchin the team interviews and holy crap Yaya looks like he doesnt need pads

  14. Booger Says:

I didn’t take the “immortal” thing as a dig, but maybe I’m wrong tho, (&/or) not a family member. Just be happy that we can at least get a picture of what is going on during “underwear football” practice.

  15. Dude Says:

“Chase Edmonds said that Johnson kid will make the team. He reminds him of Randall Cobb.”

Kameron Johnson outta Barton? it’s so hard finding tape on the kid but I did check him out in a few of Bartons’ reels coming from D-II, but from what I’ve read so far he’s turning heads. I’m always down for having another underdog to root for on the roster.

I like the Funderburk kid from App State, 8 picks in your last two seasons and a good amount of PBUs is nice. We need new gunners on special teams so I hope he can find a niche there. Same for Keenan Isaac.

  16. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Sapp, Brooks, Gregory

  17. Capt.Tim Says:

    Thanks Joe, good stuff.
Did you see who was playing at Center and Left Guard today?

  18. DoooshLaRue Says:

    America’s OLB.

  19. Steve in Mad Beach Says:

Randy Gregory will be the 1st active player inducted into the Ring Of Honor! Mark that down, you heard it here 1st

    …….

There you go, prove my point, you dipsh!ts will be saying Trask outplayed Mayfield in minicamp the rest of the summer

  21. Christopher Schiefen Says:

The difference between the 3 receivers you mention is draft status. McMillian’s a late first/early second without injuries, but he was still drafted pretty high.

  22. Dave Pear Says:

NCBuc and Osqueeltardy’all ought to get together under their Kyle posters for a long cuddle.

  23. pancake block Says:

wasnt the knock on Culp was his stone hands?

  24. Joe Says:

“…the immortal Raleigh Webb…” Why the unnecessary passive aggressive dig at a guy just trying to play football and earn his way onto a professional roster?

Why not? When’s the last time a guy from The Citadel was All-Pro or made a play in the Super Bowl? Why put false hope out there for readers and fans and pretend he’s Michael Irvin?

Joe does know Buccaneers.com has the Bucs with 20 future Hall of Famers on the roster. Joe lives in the real world.

  25. Dave Pear Says:

The real world has also indicated that Hassan Reddick is a non fit for the Bucs from a cap standpoint and a culture standpoint. But let’s keep advocating for a guy that is quite possibly no better than what the Bucs already have given his age and d-baggery.

  26. Dave Pear Says:

That was moderated? Haha maybe deep state is really in on this operation.

  27. Joe Says:

But let’s keep advocating for a guy that is quite possibly no better than what the Bucs already have given his age and d-baggery.

Can you go into detail why Reddick is such a sleazebag and unfit to be on an NFL roster? Joe has never read one thing bad about Reddick — unless you consider sacks production (GASP!) a bad thing, which Joe will agree, a guy who produces sacks is not a cultural fit for the Bucs.

Wirfs isn’t practicing either because he wants a new contract, just like Reddick. Is Wirfs now a scumbag too?

  28. Dave Pear Says:

Too much for Bucs salary cap and too selfish by demonstrating he won’t honor a contract he signed. Reddick wasnt, isn’t, and never will be a Buccaneer.

  29. Dave Pear Says:

    Mod pizza again, ROTFLMAO

  30. garro Says:

“tight end Ryan Miller on consecutive plays”

He has become a tight end? What?

    Go Bucs!

  31. NCBuc Says:

    Dave Pear…..
Read much? Where I’m saying nobody expects Trask to be the guy is advocating for him? Just like nowhere in my post did I say Trask outplayed Baker. Last time I checked, you want your 1 & 2 practicing well. You Baker Bois should really get Trask out of your heads. It’s like it’s an illness for some of you.

  32. Oneilbuc Says:

NC. Last training camp Trask did out play Baker that’s just the truth ain’t nobody just making that up we have the facts on that. I thought that Baker would be better than Trask last year because of his experience but he didn’t. That’s why we haven’t heard anyone say that Baker was better last training camp. And I think this year Joe ain’t going to tell everything he sees between the 2 of them. Me personally I would rather for the bucs just draft a quarterback next year in the first round or less Baker plays at least like Jerry Golf or Better. It’s NFC Championship or bust no more excuses for Baker Mayfield.

  33. Robbie Says:

Sounds like the offense is catching on nicely, we are going to be better than they give us credit for!!

  34. Rod Munch Says:

“Dang, maybe it’s just Joe but it appears Payne Durham has slimmed down.”

That guy is all over the place. Go back again and watch his college highlights, and that guy at one point looks like a skinny WR – then later looks like a lumbering giant. To me, based on what I saw, he looked much more comfortable playing at a smaller size, but it also seemed like he had a huge growth spurt at some point. Interesting to hear he’s smaller again – but probably for the best, since in his early highlights he looked like a very good receiving TE who could run, as opposed to when he bulked up and to me, just looked very sluggish.
