K.J. Britt Talks About Improved Pass Defense

After Tuesday’s underwear football practice, Bucs coach Todd Bowles said inside linebacker K.J. Britt never truly struggled in pass coverage.
What Britt did begin doing, Bowles said, was using his eyes. Since, Bowles added, Britt has been fine in pass coverage.
Britt was asked what that meant.
“Just focus,” Britt said. “If you are just focusing on what you are looking at, it lets your abilities take care of itself.
“Just focusing on what I am looking at. Mental preparation.”
Since Bowles backed Britt saying he is a three-down linebacker, this tells Joe that Britt had all offseason to build on his few starts and to prepare to be a full-time starting inside linebacker, so there could be a chance he balls out this fall and surprises many.
If Britt can raise his game, and Lavonte David can stay healthy, that will be a big boost to the Bucs defense.

He crushes guards. He can stand them up. Brick wall them.
I love how he plays linebacker.
But we will start using new hybrid defenses like I’ve been mentioning.
Zero linebackers on 3rd down.
All safeties and corners baby!!

teacherman1983 … ‘Zero linebackers on 3rd down’ kind of implies that the situation calls for a pass and nothing but a pass (ie, 3rd & reasonably long?). The type of situation where you have so much confidence that it WILL be a pass that you can turn the dogs loose. And yes, in cases like that why not (periodically) shift things up as a defense & bring in better coverage guys.
But most NFL teams (like the Bucs) are working to improve their running game, and I think are becoming better ‘balanced’ as a consequence. Go with a defense that’s pass-focused and I’d bet it won’t take long for NFL offenses to figure out how to burn them.
I love hearing what you wrote about KJ Britt. I’ve been kind of ambivalent towards him admittedly (5th Rnd pick, not very fast, 4th year with us but has barely gotten onto the field, etc), but I admit that a lot of that was because of what others have written about him. But as I look at what he showed last year, KJ’s a lot better than what I (and many others) were giving him credit for.

There was that one play against ATL where Britt tracked Robinson down from the Mike spot all the way out to the boundary on the goal line and stopped a score. We’ll wait and see, but I think we got a breakout candidate with Britt this season and what an example that would be, make your bones on STs, get your shot, then running with it. Wouldn’t be expensive to bring him back next season either, we should all be rooting for Britt to ball out

Britt’s speed: His combine 40 time is a tenth of a second slower than LD’s combine 40 time. I don’t think the word “slow” applies to him. Now he’s certainly slower than DW, but his speed merely allowed him to take himself out of the play even faster

I was waiting for the Bucs to draft a ILB maybe Payton Wilson or Jeremiah Trotter and it didn’t happen hopefully we can rely on Britt to be the man. Obviously the front office thought what we had already was better than anyone in the draft. Maybe the 2025 draft will produce the LB that will replace LVD.

Come to think of it, I haven’t felt that way about looking at a Bucs LB since Hardy

The knock on Britt is speed. But smarts > speed, as White proved constantly.

We have always had good linebacker, a strength of tge franchise from day one. If Britt isn’t fine, the replacement will be.
Using draft capital on a high pick at lb like Devin white didn’t seem like the smartest move to me but he was a good player mostly.
