Antoine Winfield Officially A “Ball Hawk”
May 14th, 2024You know, Joe didn’t need to be told that Bucs All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield, the highest-paid defensive back in the league, is a ball hawk.
Hell, you only needed to watch his college film at Minnesota to see that.
Winfield has been a baller since he first stepped foot on the practice fields of One Buc Palace. But now it is official. After agreeing to his generations-changing contract yesterday, NextGen Stats made it official. Winfield is a ball hawk.
Yesterday, NextGen Stats, the advanced stats outfit owned and operated by the NFL that uses GPS sensors in players’ equipment, noted Winfield had the fourth-best “ball hawk rate” of any defender in the league last season.
What the hell is a “ball hawk rate?” It is the number of pass disruptions a player makes when he is closest to the ball, divided by the number of targets sent at a defender.
Notice this stat includes all defenders, not just safeties.
Again, Joe figured all of this out when Winfield was in college. It’s comforting to know the NFL has acknowledged this same trait in Winfield. Officially.

Mark Dumbuttnik would never have drafted Winfield, probably because he would have ignored Dumquatnik’s 3rd grade questions and then decided Antoine talks too much. So glad Licht took the Dumsquatnik’ shovel and threw it in the Dumpster.

Bucs don’t win the South without Winfield’s goaline fumble heroics versus Atlanta and Carolina last season. Stud.

So excited about Antoine this upcoming season. His massive deal was well deserved. Glad to see that McAfee’s show celebrated it. This is a big deal. Go Bucs!
