“We Just Did A Walk-Through And He Was On Everything”

May 10th, 2024

Graham Barton, Tampa Bay’s first-round draft pick.

Day 1 of rookie minicamp — at center — seemed to go very well mentally on the field for Bucs first-round pick Graham Barton.

Joe can’t say “physically” because it’s underwear football and nobody is really supposed to hit anyone. Plus, the Bucs didn’t draft interior defensive linemen, so against whom would Barton be showing off?

Elijah Klein, the Bucs’ sixth-round pick and the final pick overall in Round 6, shared how impressed he is by Barton this afternoon at One Buc Palace.

“Dude’s a stud. I mean, he’s super impressive,” Klein said of Barton.

“Physique-wise, built up, mentally he’s sharp. I mean, we just did a walk-through and he’s on everything. And he’s just a really good dude. Fun to talk to.”

Joe is glad to hear it. A first-round pick at interior offensive line should come off like a stud ready to ball on Day 1.

Klein is impressive too. He will be starting left guard by mid season.

  2. Bucs Guy Says:

I hope Klein takes 9ver at some point. Love his size and PFF grades.

  3. Austing Says:

Got alot of nastiness in the middle of our Oline

  4. Hodad Says:

Klein starts at RG, Mauch moves to LG.

  5. Defense Rules Says:

Wirfs-Barton-Goedeke are all beasts & they’ll be fine. Who wins out at LG & RG among Hainsey, Mauch, Klein, Bredeson & Opeta is where the real questions lie. Not counting anyone out at this point, not even the other rookie Guard, Avery Jones (Auburn) or our newest add, Logan Stenberg (4 years out of Kentucky).

  6. Stanglassman Says:

Why didn’t Graham do a presser today?

  7. Doc Says:

Everyone looks good in underwear football.

  8. Hearty Dikerson Says:

Is there a study on the neck circumference to success ratio?

  9. teacherman1983 Says:

    @hearty

    Yea there is.

    Evidence.

Neck power is as important as core power.

But most people forget about their neck.

    @Hodad,

They will avoid moving Mauch around. Why have 3 guys move on the OL?????? Mauch needs continuity to master one position. You just can’t afford to keep messing with the formula.

Agree with others, Klein is impressive too. We have strong players going into the season and I like the neck circumference success ratio given by teacherman1983.

Hey ! Where is my post from last night that was “under review “

  13. realistic-optimistic Says:

@DR, I seriously doubt Mauch will be competing for a job. He’ll start. The only question is: stay at RG or move to LG? Before the draft I though there was a slight chance they’d move him to C this year, but not after the Barton pick.

Whichever G position doesn’t go to Mauch will have fierce competition. Lots of ability in that group. I like how our OL has been revamped over the last two seasons. Good starters and solid depth (on paper).

Let’s see if Carberry can coach these guys so they take a step up. I expect Carberry to try different lineups but he needs to settle on a lineup to build continuity and teamwork.

Joe, what is Carberry’s deadline to finalize his offensive lineup? They need time to work together.

  15. garro Says:

I hope Klein keeps up with Barton and together they get our O line to legendary status. Like the Redskins Hogs of the 80s.

    Go Bucs!

  16. Doc Says:

    “mentally he’s sharp”

He played at Duke which means he’s likely quite a bit brighter than the average NCAA Division 1 football player. Academic schools like Duke, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, etc., struggle fielding national contenders these days because they can’t field academically challenged players like other schools do.

I do not know how Duke, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, handle their recruiting, but I know the Ivy League uses an “Academic Index” that requires teams to have average test scores within a certain statistical range of the general student body. So, a kid with a 36 on the ACT may be brought in by the coach because it allows him to bring in a kid with a 24 – the two averaging a 30.

barton already has a man sized nfl physique…dude is only gonna get bigger and burlier

  18. BillyBucco Says:

Barton is ripped compared to Klein.
I think Klein might need a year in an NFL weight room and a strict diet.
They have Barton listed at 6’5” and Klein at 6’4”, but he looks considerably shorter than Barton.
He does seem as smart as they come and he has an impeccable attitude.
He also knows the run game inside and out.
I would tend to think Opeta and his 39 reps on the bench press strength wins out at LG or RG, depending on where Mauch starts.
And Mauch will be starting guaranteed. Unless he gets hurt, he will be much better and is already stronger.

  19. Christopher Schiefen Says:

Yeah they put Klein at RG not left which makes me think they’re hoping he takes hold there (the road grater position) and move the lighter/more nimble Mauch to LG.
