Money Talks With Baker Mayfield

May 8th, 2024

Unless you work for the government or a play a professional sport, you probably don’t know how much your co-workers earn.

And private companies like to keep it that way.

Salary talk in the workplace is often considered taboo. Joe once had a co-worker lose his mind when he found out Joe got a 4 percent annual raise. That guy only got 1 percent.

In the NFL, of course, teammates know each other’s salaries, incentive-pay goals and more.

In the case of Baker Mayfield, per his quarterbacks coach, Mayfield’s new $30 million annual contract impacts the roster.

“He has a contract, so the guys know it’s his team,” QB coach Thad Lewis said this week.

It’s a telling take, especially coming from a guy like Lewis, a former NFL quarterback who retired after the 2017 season.

Might the Bucs’ 2023 results been different if “the guys” knew it was Mayfield’s team last spring and summer? Maybe that would have made things better for the Bucs on the field, or maybe that would have made things worse because it wouldn’t have lit the same fire under Mayfield.

Regardless, it is Mayfield’s team now. And Joe is glad to see Mayfield attending voluntary workouts and not counting his cash alongside his napping new baby.

Glad he doesn’t have a Geezahag to worry him and distract him. Old Geezy the horse face is really showing her stripes before the world. Old has-been “super”
Models who resemble Rachel Alexandra aren’t really in demand.

Dude does not skip leg day.

  3. Biggun Says:

I don’t see Baker giving any less than 100% contract or no contract, its how he’s wired. But this can be dangerous as well.

  4. Boss Says:

    High hopes…

  5. SB~LV Says:

lol… I can remember older experienced coworkers training the new guy and finding out that the new guy was starting out with more money than the veteran.
    😂

This is why it’s not a good idea to stick with one employer for more than 3-5 years in many industries. It used to not be the case but those days are long gone.

Trasks ball never landed. Probably in the stands or hit a cameraman.

  8. Tucker Says:

Baker looks good and it’s good to see him putting in the work still, go bucs!!

  9. Steven007 Says:

Bake looks much more fit in his lower body than I would have suspected. Not sure if it’s always been that way or if that’s a fairly recent positive change. With his padding on he always looks semi-portly. Nice to see some man muscle on him.

BUCS ARE GOING TO BE AWESOME THIS YEAR
    1. Real OC
    2. Godwin Contract Year
    3. Bigger, Better, Stronger OL
    4. Media Disrespect
    5. More Pass Rushers
    6. More Depth
    7. NFCS Didn’t Improve

NFCS #4 is practically a lock. Who is better in the NFC?
I feel like we’re right there with 49ers, Eagles, and Detroit.

AHHH!!!! I wish we could have grabbed Khalil Mack. I think we’d be SB Bound.

What are you trying to say? Did you mean to post this on some non-football related forum? Or am I missing something?

omeone needs to rewath the game. We were outmatched on OL and DL…..got ZERO pressure, they tore our secondary apart, coach had a horrible game plan and did not adjust.

and you think one 1st round OL and a 2nd DE is going to fix all that?

    one can dream

End of the clip receiver has the ball and is heading downfield and I don’t see him holding a camera.

Is it Trask’s name starts with a T? Is that it? That would make larrd a tarrd.

Looking good on the video! I hope we see many more. Getting excited for the season to start. Go Bucs! Super Bowl here we come!

  15. Steven007 Says:

With all due respect James, I wasn’t looking at Trask at all. Furthermore, I commented primarily on Baker’s lower half. Everyone knows Trask is taller.

  16. Let ‘em bake Says:

Mayfield squats 415. He benches 315. That’s why he’s so hard for defenses to pull him down. I’d venture to guess only Josh Allen is a stronger qb. I competed in bodybuilding shows in my youth. Looking at his legs , he might have a body fat index of 15%. You can be thick, and still be fairly lean.

  17. Beeej Says:

That Hail Mary at the end of the Bills game: Mayfield threw it from HIS 40 yard line, ball landed 5 yards deep in the end zone. Dude has an arm

  18. Steven007 Says:

James, I’m aware of perspective. We’re talking past each other. And it doesn’t matter anyway.

  19. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Mayfield’s arm seems fine. I mean, it is not as strong as Doug Williams’ arm as far as Bucs QBs but it is strong enough for sure. Funny though, I think it was Russell Wilson’s last season or so in Seattle when he lead the league (by a lot) in most passes with 50+ air yards (maybe it was 40). Either way, would not have expected Wilson to have the one of the strongest arms in the league. He and Mayfield are roughly the same size.

  20. ^^mtn^^ Says:

    Rod Munch is disappointed.

He didn’t get to sneak a peek of “BAKER MAYFIELD’S PERFECTLY FORMED GLUTEUS MAXIMUS” in that X vid 🙂

  21. Bucblind Says:

No one has thrown the ball 10 yards further than Bakers 71 yard toss IN A GAME James. Not even in those contest where they all get 50 throws a piece. Favre threw it 74 on his best throw after 5 tries and won the competition that day. Bledsoe threw it less. You Baker haters are simply amazing you will say anything to lessen his talent. What are you talking about “his body momentum adding to the distance”??

  22. Lt. Dan Says:

“Unless you work for the government or a play a professional sport, you probably don’t know how much your co-workers earn”

Gotta correct you Joe. Government pay is public information.

  23. drdneast Says:

$30 million for a good NFL starting QB is almost ludicrously low in today’s NFL. Mayfield gave them a hometown discount and he’s only been here one year.

  24. Anonymous Says:

What do we do if Kyle Trask becomes a Pro Bowl caliber QB for a division rival?

Do we prepare for the apocalypse?

  25. Mac Says:

We will never find out. All NFCS Qbs have big money contracts or heavily invested rookies. Plus Trask if a good backup qb. Never be an NFL starter.

  27. Don'tBmad Says:

$100 to your $20 that Baker can throw further than Trask. Casuals crack me up

  28. Marky Mark Says:

Keep piling on the doubt and disrespect. It just motivates baker more
