The famous Johnny Fontaine scene in the opening minutes of the timeless movie epic “The Godfather” sprung to mind for Joe when listening to Bucs running backs coach Skip Peete discuss Bucs running back Rachaad White.
Today the Bucs had offensive assistants available to speak with the local pen and mic club. Peete was asked about the leader of the NFL’s worst ground game the past two seasons Rachaad White.
Hearing Peete speak about White, Joe pictured the scene of Vito Corleone slapping a crying Johnny Fontaine yelling, “You can act like a man! What’s the matter with you?!”
Peete said the first thing White needs to do is immediately hit the holes. No dancing. No hesitation. Instead, Peete wanted White to use “authority” and “run with violence.”
Peete however didn’t seem to have any issue with White as a receiver. He praised White for being “a natural route running coming out of the backfield.”
So if Peete wants White to run with more violence, does that mean White should pass on the veal, avoid the causeway and take the cannolis?

White’s run style is like that of LaVonte Bell, not Michael Pittman. God I hope White is smart enough to ignore this idiot. Wait for your blockers to make space, then hit the hole. You know who ran full speed head on, on every play? Sean Tucker and Keyshawn Vaughn, and look at where that got them.
Truly, what a clueless coach. Go watch some college film so you actually know what type of player you have.

White is a modest RB. At best. Peete is right, he runs timid. But the blocking and playcalling was also abysmal.
Better blocking and sometimes other than up the middle would help the kid.

Yeah, the real problem isn’t hitting the hole with authority… it’s as follows:
(1) Having a hole (white got hit behind the line of scrimmage often).
(2) Finding the hole (white’s vision improves markedly when out past the O-line).
Not sure why #2 is an issue, he seemed to have better vision in college. Did all the hits and tackles milliseconds after hand off screw with his head a little and thus dimmish his field vision (too busy looking to see where the next immediate hit is coming from)? Not sure. Maybe the answer is Bucky and the competition he will bring.

Bring ROJO in on a league minimum deal The more competition you have for a position group the better. ROJO is a 4.3 guy and hits the hole hard as heck.

Regardless of how fans feel about it here the coaching staff including OC Liam
Cohen appear to value quick decisions, explosion at the line and getting to top speed quickly. Not exactly the strengths that Rachaad has been able to showcase as the starting back. However, they are all things Bucky Irving thrives at according to coach Cohen himself today. I sense a competition at RB1 coming this summer.

Just curious, but other than a couple of seasons for Le’Veon Bell himself, when has the Le’Veon Bell running style actually worked?
It’s not about hitting the hole(crease?). It’s about hitting the spot where the hole(crease?) is about to be, and hitting HARD!

I’m with Rod that hitting ‘the hole’ hard is stupid when there’s no hole. White’s problem is with vision AND he has to practically stop to make his jump cuts. With a zone scheme, often the hole is on the backside and the back needs to quickly cut back before the LOS to find the big hole. White can’t do that, a square peg in a round hole.

He only talked about hitting the hole hard when talking about needing a yard for a first down or a touchdown at the goal line which isnt stupid at all. He just said he wanted white to be more physical which also isnt stupid. You might be on to something with what you said Jimbob which might be why bucky might excel in the scheme they are trying to run might make a run on being rb1 because of that.

I like the RoJo idea as well. Ira was completely dismissive of Tucker in a recent podcast. He didn’t elaborate at all but asserted Tucker is a non-factor. It seemed like he wasn’t even worth talking about. I’m excited to see Irving eclipse White on the depth chart. I dismissed him due to his size but he almost always finishes his runs forward and only had one fumble in his collegiate career. One thing the Bucs have been consistently solid with since the Schiano days is not coughing up the rock on run plays. He can keep that up and wow is he slippery. This offense could be a lot of fun to watch between Baker and Bucky bouncing and spinning off attempted tackles.

I’m a Pac12 guy and I’ll be the first to tell you to stop drafting Pac12 Rbs. They’re soft finesse runners. Name the top Rbs of the last 5-10 years. All SEC and Big10.

RoJo averaged 4.4 a season in 5 seasons. His best ypc was 5.1 with our Bucs. Look at his overall stats and it’s funny because his stats are rather similar to a RB that Joe keeps bringing up in Marshawn Lynch. Look for yourself dude. Numbers don’t lie.

Improve the play calling. Improve the blocking and whites vision and we will be middle of the pack in rushing easily. Deff isn’t just 1 reason why we are last it’s several. Our draft pick will deff help. Coen will deff help and hopefully white will improve as well. Even if he does t he’s still a threat in the passing game and this is a passing league. Glad we got white

White was an outstanding College RB.
He damn well understands the position.
Is he fast enough? Quick enough? Having watched him in the open field- the answer is yes. In space, he makes plays.
Then the problem is lack of space.
Whats odd, is the year before, Playoff Lenny had the same spatial anomoly.
With Tom Brady, Mike Evans, Etc- we were 32nd in rushing- and gave Tom Brady the only losing season in his historic Career.
Bet Tom feels appreciated for giving us that SuperBowl!

Still we need another Linemen, or we will continue to be last in the league

The SEC has more selections (and more variety) than the rest of the Big 5 put together. As for the P12, McCaffery is the only back from the conference. Caff is a stud but it’s hard to call him a true RB … which would make it 0 for the P12.
Again, I’m a P12 guy. I’m a Duck for goodness sake. I love Buckey (on the Ducks), but he’s built just like LaMichael James, Kenyon Barnes, and Darius Thomas. All awesome in college but too small to do anything at the pro level. The Bucs had Kenyon Barnes. He had WAY more production than Buckey in college. How’d that turn out? How many people knew he was even a Buc?

Peete should be complaining about what the pathetic Oline is not doing to open holes at the first level. Hainsey and Mauch looked liked windmills in some games. White is a good RB with no where to go on many downs. Bad play calling was another factor but thankfully Canales is gone.

Truthful fans who actually watch the games know the truth of the matter; they’re the ones who always mention the O-line, and/or Canales/Bowles ridiculous obsession with running it up the middles without any run-blocking capability.

About Bucky: his highlights-films look awesome. He’s another cut-back halfback with great “moves” who the opposition will will try defend against (if he is successful and therefore relevant) as the do with Rachaad; i.e., in “space,” they can’t.
One problem, of course, though, Bucky’s films are college games with commensurate defense/talent. In the NFL, if Bucky turns out to be as good as Edmonds, it’ll still be big on the plus side for depth.
The training camp competitions look like they’re shaping-up to be:
Rachaad: easily at #1.
Edmonds v Bucky and Palmer v McMillan.
And, Burton v “wherever ever he wants to play” (hopefully, Center)
That’s called a “good problem.”
It’ll be interesting to see what management wants to accomplish in the pre-season games.

White left alot, and I do mean alot of yards out on the field! His coach is right! The maddening thing is that his OC is also right about the play calls and the O- Line/TE not doing there job consistently. He was nailed in the backfield way too often before he had any chance to run.
White missed holes when they were there and pissed around in the backfield, refusing to go where the play was called! Just like his predecessor “playoff Lenny”. They both were told to cut it out by multiple coaches including the HC. Lenny is gone in part because he refused.
Both big backs who refused to just put heir heads down and run the damn ball! White got better at this for part of last year then reverted back to it late in the season.
He was also helped by alot less of the zone run scheme by mid season. Our O line just could not pull it off consistently. Add to all this that the TE blocking that many of our run plays required was ridiculously bad. Otten tried hard but whiffed and was blown up alot.

Rachaad didn’t miss holes.
If there was a hole, he hit it.
The O-line rarely provided any run-blocking support at all.
Despite this problem, Rachaad actually gained yards by waiting for something to “work with;” yards gained that lesser running backs wouldn’t manage to produce; In many games, he produced a huge percentage of the total offense; just a simple stat-search proves this
Any truthful fans who actually watch the games knows this.
