“I’ve Seen It Firsthand Standing On The Sidelines”

May 5th, 2024

Bucs GM Jason Licht

Gameday has changed since Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht started with the team 10 years ago.

Licht used to sit in the press box during road games with unkempt, buffet-stuffed media clowns like Joe. Licht would be flanked by key front office staff members and Joe often found it to be ridiculous for well paid executives to be in an environment where they had to watch their words when emotions were running hot. Man, sit anywhere else!

Talk about awkward. Joe sat at arms length directly in front of Licht when the Falcons jumped out to a 56-0 lead against the Bucs in Atlanta.

As the years passed, Licht and his crew found more appropriate seating and then COVID hit. Fallout from The Sickness moved many general managers down to the sidelines during games, and some like Licht now spend as much time as they can there during games.

Without question, being on the field gives general managers very different perspective.

Licht sort of went there on SiriusXM NFL Radio last week.

The Buccaneers Ring of Honor GM talked about the impact and success of Baker Mayfield and dropped a nugget from his sideline view.

“You get a little worried the way he throws his body around, but it fires up the team and it just, it energizes the team. I’ve seen it firsthand standing on the sideline,” Licht said.

One day soon, Joe is going to ask Licht how his evaluation of players has changed, if at all, because of his time on the sidelines.

Im telling you guys, bet on the over….these betting lines are stupid crazy….but play with what you can afford to lose

Seriously, Im about to do a home equity loan and put it all, and i mean ALL of it on the over…

  3. Cobraboy Says:

Licht is a quintessential lunch-bucket GM. Nothing fancy or arrogant, just a guy who is smart about building teams, no muss, no fluff.

  4. Brian in St Pete Says:

One of the best traits of Licht is that he doesn’t get trapped in his ego. If something just doesn’t work he isn’t afraid to cut bait and move on.

  5. MadMax Says:

And Denver in the nba, yeah got a hundred on that next game 😉

He’s a top-10 or top-12 GM without question. At least IMO.

  13. Hearty Dikerson Says:

Holy s- this roast has been the best thing on TV in a while. Hilarious sets by the pro comedians, awesome and funny insights by the non-comedians. Must watch

  20. Capt. Tim Says:

Thank God we have Jason Licht.
He aint perfect, but you csn see it in his personality- Hes in it to win it!
He doesn’t have any other agendas. He wants the Lombardi Trophy every year, and is fighting to get!
We have both a great Front office, and Outstanding Ownership!
The Glazers have two Lombardis since they bought the team..
Baker will get them a third.

“You get a little worried the way he throws his body around, but it fires up the team and it just, it energizes the team. I’ve seen it firsthand standing on the sideline,” Licht said.

I can see that leading to Trask getting his chance.

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Personally, if Mayfield shows he can take a leap forward this year, I hope he stays healthy and becomes elite.

I have my doubts, but I’m hoping for the best. And if he goes down…I hope Trask proves he should have been the starter all along. That’s better than him bombing.

  23. drdneast Says:

Good lord, when are you Trask acolytes going to take a long well needed rest.

  24. Esteban85 Says:

I like this article. Mind blowing that he sat near press Joes during games. Nice insight
