In Round 7, Tampa Bay Selects Tight End Devin Culp
April 27th, 2024Tampa Bay’s fascination with University of Washington players continues.
With pick No. 251 overall (Round 7) in the 2024 NFL Draft today, the Bucs picked tight end Devin Culp out of Washington. But don’t think of him as a blocking tight end, he’s small for the position, measuring 6-3 and just 231 pounds.
Like any seventh-rounder, Culp is a flawed player, but unlike many seventh-round picks, Culp is a heck of an athlete. Culp had some highlight-reel grabs and he was the fastest tight end at the NFL Scouting Combine. If he can put that speed to work on special teams, he might find himself on the roster
At Washington, Culp wasn’t a focal point of the offense. He played in 54 games and had 66 catches.

Almost like him more as a big bodied WR.
April 27th, 2024 at 7:02 pm
I like our draft. Licht checked all the boxes with solid players.
April 27th, 2024 at 7:04 pm
Culp looks like a high ceiling player. 4.4 speed at TE is rare. When he catches the ball, he’s looking to run someone over. That’s a steal for a 7th round pick. Production isn’t amazing but he has a ton of competition for the football at Washington. He looks like he could also play full back on power.
April 27th, 2024 at 7:05 pm
The only position of need we didn’t address was ILB. I suspect that we will bring in a bunch of undrafted guys and see if one sticks.
April 27th, 2024 at 7:07 pm
Could pose a mismatch in a 2 TE set……..that speed for his size is rare.
April 27th, 2024 at 7:07 pm
Faster than the Oregon running back
April 27th, 2024 at 7:09 pm
Kind of a Tim Wright role, big receiver-smallish TE?
April 27th, 2024 at 7:09 pm
This draft is lookin good….Solid beef.
April 27th, 2024 at 7:10 pm
He’s Marques Colston. Colston was drafted as a WR but played TE in college as well.
April 27th, 2024 at 7:16 pm
6-3 231 … runs a 4.4 … just have him lose a few pounds and move him to WR and learn under Evans.
April 27th, 2024 at 7:16 pm
Nice pick up for Coen’s offense. Taula and Wells really dropped the ball last year as Durham passed both of them on the depth chart. And Kieft seems to have regressed. So the door is wide open for Culp if he improves his blocking and pass catching.
April 27th, 2024 at 7:18 pm
Seems like nothing but a blocker who never really produced in the passing game, but apparently there is a lot of potential according to some-
“Culp is an athletic anomaly who was one the best testers ever among tight ends at the NFL Combine. Teams may view his upside as worth a selection in the latter half of the third round.”
April 27th, 2024 at 7:21 pm
Would have liked Curtis Jacobs at this pick but maybe they will give him a call as a FA.
April 27th, 2024 at 7:21 pm
Culp made an amazing TD catch against USC this season.
Dude is under-sized for a TE but ran a 4.4 – 40 yard dash…
Seems like an excellent H-Back and special teams guy – maybe more if he develops properly.
April 27th, 2024 at 7:22 pm
… inconsistent hands and too often misjudges catch timing (15.4 percent drop
rate in his career) …
Ouch
April 27th, 2024 at 7:26 pm
In the NFL this guy could be a slot receiver. Fast enough to get open on crossing patterns and big enough to mix it up with LBs. I like this pick. Can’t wait to see what the offense is going to look like this season.
April 27th, 2024 at 7:28 pm
He’s a 7th round pick, of course he is going to have some major flaws to address but he has one hell of an upside if we can develop him a bit.
April 27th, 2024 at 7:30 pm
I’m with you Rod convert him to receiver and put him at the bottom of the depth chart so he can be a learning project. Who knows he might turn into a down field weapon depending on how smart he is and how hard he works.
April 27th, 2024 at 7:31 pm
Why do we continue to draft mediocre tight ends. 4 tight ends drafted in last three drafts. He’s another OJ Howard, speed only. Let’s just put him at wr n make him another version of Calvin Johnson, without the Megatron label.
April 27th, 2024 at 7:44 pm
I like at his size, him being a big WR who can run block.
This and the 6th rounder OG both sound like projects, but that’s what you get in the 6th and 7th rounds, so nothing wrong with that. If they even make the team, it’s generally a win.
Also at his size and speed, he seems like a guy who will be a natural special teams ace.
April 27th, 2024 at 7:53 pm
Lose weight WTF he runs a 4.4 why lose weight what DB wants to cover this guy at 6’3” 231 lbs.

Speed vs quickness, drop to like 220 and gain some agility. But depends on his build, if he’s a guy who can put on weight or lose weight. In any case, he’s a 7th rounder, so it’s a pure lottery pick, and a home run if he even makes the team.
April 27th, 2024 at 8:00 pm
Come on. It’s a 7th round pick and you expected the return of Gronk?
April 27th, 2024 at 8:00 pm
6’3, 240, 4.4 speed. He’s a WR.
April 27th, 2024 at 8:57 pm
Bye Ko Kieft. Nothing against him at all, and I know this guy is a very different player but he should be a good special teamer. With that speed if he can develop his blocking and catching a bit. Good final pick.
April 27th, 2024 at 9:00 pm
He will be a returner under the new rule kickoff rules – big and fast. Special teamer guy for 1st year.
April 27th, 2024 at 9:04 pm
Isn’t Evans around 225? Think he could play WR at 231, sounds like he has good speed for his size!
April 27th, 2024 at 9:12 pm
Hes a TE that has speed and can catch.
We needed that. Our TEs hd the worst production in the league.
Worth a 7th rounder.
April 27th, 2024 at 9:21 pm
I see this guy more more as a WR hybrid
April 27th, 2024 at 9:23 pm
Just saw Devin Culp run the 40. Damn he is fast. As for a comparison with Mike Evan, Culp looks like a workout beast has more of body type with a TE than a WR. Definitely has some muscle mass.
April 27th, 2024 at 9:36 pm
For those saying move him to receiver… The guy played in the 240s range not 230 and is known as a very good blocker. Hopefully he comes along as a receiver, but not counting on it for a year or 2.
Personally, I expect big jump from Otten with Durham as the number two.
I am more intrigued by the guard in the round 6 from UTEP. I saw two different sites that said he’s ready to start now as a nasty run blocker, but he needs work at past protection.
April 27th, 2024 at 9:45 pm
Love this pick.
April 27th, 2024 at 11:25 pm
Basically a WR to line up against LBs?
April 28th, 2024 at 12:08 am
Would have preferred a big body tight end like Cade Stover. Bucs need a tight end who can block to help running game. Maybe as some have suggested that this guy is really a WR in disguise?
April 28th, 2024 at 2:53 am
For 7th round he sounds intriguing.
April 28th, 2024 at 6:55 am
Ummm- a good blocker?
Not even close. Hes a pass catching TE. His blocking technique is high school level.
But
Let him play special teams. Stick him in the weight room and on the Juggs machine. .
Teach the kid how tipobuse his hands, and blok
Let him go catch a few passes over the middle. You never know- he might be useful
Pennix made his life hard, lacked touch on alot of throws.
Mayfield has a stronger arm, but knows how to put touch on the ball. These two should like each other.

I want to know who our scout is for the northwest.
Tell me…and I’ll show you a man who pounds the table for his suggested picks versus all the other scouts combined!
April 28th, 2024 at 7:43 am
Most scouting reports state he is a decent blocker and PFF graded him as a decent blocker too. It is his hands that need work and I think he will be developed as TE because of that reason. But if he improves his hands dramatically then there is a chance he makes the transition to WR or sticks as a TE.
April 28th, 2024 at 7:52 am
Licht picked from the west in this draft because with late pacific start times most gm,s dont see those games on tv. Players there fly under the radar. Good value picks at the end of each round.
April 28th, 2024 at 7:58 am
Not a lot of production in college from a predominantly passing team makes me question the pick. Maybe the scouting team seen something they like. I hope so. Would have like Curtis Jacobs at this pick to learn from David. I guess the Chiefs signed him.
April 28th, 2024 at 10:48 am
I wanted Tatum Bethune LB from FSU who was available.
April 29th, 2024 at 10:44 am
This is the only pick that I went Huh? on.
Suspect hands and can’t hold a block in the run game but he has some speed? 4.4 speed is only good if you can catch folks.
Jason knows more than this fan. This one mystifies me. I don’t see hm being a TE for this team. Beating out any of the guys on the roster is a tall order unless they have some hybrid player stuff in mind but with bad hands…
Go Bucs
