Todd Bowles Details Joe Tryon-Shoyinka As A Versatile Weapon
March 26th, 2024Joe got the state of the Joe Tryon-Shoyinka address today from head coach Todd Bowles.
And it was impressive and passionate.
Bowles answered this question from Joe with a little extra juice in his voice.
Tryon-Shoyinka, of course, is entering his fourth season after being the Bucs’ first-round pick of an edge rusher in 2021. He’s hasn’t been the player the Bucs hoped for, but he also is far from an empty roster spot.
JoeBucsFan.com: Coach, a year ago at this time you were talking about how Joe Tryon-Shoyinka kind of left some sacks on the field, wasn’t closing them out. Where did he stand last season with that? Did he leave a lot on the field or was he not really getting there as much as you wanted?
Todd Bowles: He got back there. The ball was out some. Joe’s a very unique player. He’s not going to be the go-around-the-corner Shaq [Barrett] type of guy. Joe can move all across the line of scrimmage and help us with a lot of things. He’s out linebacker. He’s our defensive end. He’s our 3-tech. He’s our part-time nickel. He’s our part-time inside linebacker. He can come from a lot of areas so he has a lot of jobs. And he’s one of those chess pieces that I talked about. So he’s a different type of rusher. He’s very athletic. He can stunt and do a lot of things. He’s not just going to come and bull you and go around the corner. Do we think he can rush the passer? Yes. Has he left some sacks out there? Yes. But he’s made some great plays for us, or set up great plays for other people. And that goes unnoticed because you don’t see him at the finality of the play. So we look for Joe just to come back and do those things for us and do better and better at what he was doing.
So there you go. Bowles passionately explained that Tryon-Shoyinka is a uniquely valuable guy whose contributions often go “unnoticed.”
Listening to Bowles reminded Joe of when Tryon-Shoyinka was drafted. Then-head coach Bucco Bruce Arians was crowing playfully about Tryon-Shoyinka being able to play safety and many other positions. Joe asked Arians if he was joking. Arians said he was dead ass serious.
Despite Bowles’ comments about his current No. 2 edge rusher, Joe is confident the Bucs plan to use a premium draft pick on that position next month.

Id love to hear what D Brooks thinks about the hip drop rule. One of the best open field tacklers ever… what does he think?
March 26th, 2024 at 11:06 am
Lol. Lying>>>
March 26th, 2024 at 11:12 am
Hahaha..Coach Bowles reminds me of Herm Edwards the way he asks a question so he can answer it himself. “Do we think he can rush the passer? Yes. Has he left some sacks out there? Yes.”
March 26th, 2024 at 11:15 am
It’s easy to forget he’s still only 24. The clock is definitely ticking but he was super young and raw coming out. I don’t think the way Bowles has used him necessarily gets the most out of him either. When you’re as inexperienced as Joe was coming out you’d ideally like him to focus on doing one thing really well. I think there’s still upside to his game but he absolutely has to change some games this year if he doesn’t want his ceiling to be quality 1st guy off the bench.
March 26th, 2024 at 11:22 am
There you go what I been saying this whole time. Plan 9 JTS is the answer not getting another edge rusher in free agency.
March 26th, 2024 at 11:27 am
We need true DE’s…
having DE’s in coverage is not good
having LB’s trying to be DE is not good.
March 26th, 2024 at 11:27 am
Coach speak, is what these guys give to the news media, its great for the team aspect and maybe motivates the player, but I’d imagine within the building Bowels has lit a fire under JTS’s arse. This guy very well may be out of the league after this year
March 26th, 2024 at 11:37 am
JTS has 114 Total Tackles in his career-13 Sacks in his career-1 Forced Fumble in his career-0 INT’s in his career. You are what your stats say you are and JTS stats say he is way below average and these are the facts.
March 26th, 2024 at 11:37 am
JTS is a slightly larger and slower version of Isaiah Simmons.
He’s an athletic freak but lacks identity as a football player.
Hope he figures it out. For him and the teams sake.
March 26th, 2024 at 11:42 am
The tell will be if he gets re-signed this year
March 26th, 2024 at 11:43 am
People still need to consider that he came out after covid year and only had very limited college experience.
That said it is NOW time to step up or accept that you are just a average NFL edge player
March 26th, 2024 at 11:43 am
Not good enough for a 1st round. pick…….don’t call me racist but I think we are getting much more value out of Anthony Nelson (4th round)
March 26th, 2024 at 11:45 am
BUST
March 26th, 2024 at 11:59 am
Todd never, ever criticizes his players in the press
March 26th, 2024 at 12:00 pm
Boss –We run a 34 front so our “DE’s” are more like DT’s with their size to hold up on double teams to allow our linebackers to make the plays. We have Hall and Kancey in those roles so we are fine at DE. When JTS is in a DE type role this means we are rushing him with 4 down lineman or in a pass rush scenario in which we take our big meats off the field and put in a line full of fast pass rushing guys.
March 26th, 2024 at 12:01 pm
How is that racist?
March 26th, 2024 at 12:01 pm
Bust by bad coaching.
Very raw and inexperienced out of college, didn’t
play covid year. I wonder if he would have been there in
the 2nd round.
Ole Todd needs to find out what ONE thing he can do well and
maybe he can develop from there.
March 26th, 2024 at 12:03 pm
He really needs to improve his overall strength, football-IQ and ‘instincts’ (upstairs). We’ll get to see this season how hungry he is, and just how much he LOVES the game of football… It’s all of HIM.
March 26th, 2024 at 12:05 pm
This is not surprising to me.
I remember hearing from a buddy who is also friends with Bowles and a lot of the staff that they were raving about JTS in this way and consistently call him a “Freak”.
Now, this was as a rookie, keep in mind.. Wonder if the sentiment has changed or stayed the same?
March 26th, 2024 at 12:07 pm
@doolnutts
Love Kancey and Hall……but are we really fine?
Sack stats say otherwise. Kancey is sick good for a DT….but we have DE’s playing DT as you admit…..and LB’s tring to play DE
I know todd is looking for mismatches, but the only mismatches so far are our LB’s trying to got against OT’s. and they aint winning.
not trying to be a critical dooshe……just stating the obvious. todd is sacrificing true DE’s in his attempt to get mismatches and blitzes.
March 26th, 2024 at 12:12 pm
JTS has enough speed but no power. I was hoping he would have gained some strength in the off-season but does sound like he is able to carry additional muscle weight.
I rooting for Licht to draft a true DE next month.
March 26th, 2024 at 12:13 pm
Jack of all positions , master of none, stats prove it’s better to be a master of one, better to be a Bowie knife than a Swiss Army knife , especially if you’re being used for defense, enough of the metaphors , you get the idea.
March 26th, 2024 at 12:14 pm
He has shown a tendency to miss tackles and bite on PAs just like DW. Not very good.
March 26th, 2024 at 12:17 pm
Jack of All Trades.
Master of None.
March 26th, 2024 at 12:22 pm
What JD and Jason says!!! Trade him for a 7th round pick.
March 26th, 2024 at 12:23 pm
Just further indication that Coach Bowles has a different idea of what the DE position does than we do. He wants guys with more than a pass rushing trait. Many of us could point to the championship run with JPP and Shaq coming off the edges as evidence to the need of a pass rush. I guess he feels that is a luxury, as he still blitzed and counted on his guys in the secondary to make plays. I dont like it, but there is a track record, and it is his calling card. I appreciate his aggressive style, but not how he gets there. Is this the season he proves he is playing higher dimensional chess? Can Todd Bowles lead a team to its third divisional title, and still not have a clue?
March 26th, 2024 at 12:39 pm
Oh, he’s special, allright.
“Hes great- but you cant see it!”
Riiiiight
March 26th, 2024 at 12:50 pm
I must be watching the wrong guy cause every time I see JTS he’s a shadow, a will o’ wisp, a puff of wind.
March 26th, 2024 at 12:55 pm
Bowles is a helluva comedian.
JTS won’t be re-signed at the end of his contract.
March 26th, 2024 at 1:18 pm
It’s clear JTS can’t rush the passer, which is why Bowles moves him all over the dline. A consistent pass- rusher doesn’t have to be moved. He stays on the edges and rush.
March 26th, 2024 at 1:18 pm
How about guard and tackle?
Guard the water bucket and tackle anyone that gets close.
March 26th, 2024 at 1:30 pm
Coachspeak translated really means…. We took the bait 5 rounds too early!
March 26th, 2024 at 1:40 pm
JTS ?
Aaaaaaaahahaha
Liar , liar , pants on fire
March 26th, 2024 at 1:45 pm
In case you didn’t know we are within a month of the draft and therefore in the lying season. Don’t believe anything from a GM, coach or reporter citing “team sources”. They are all putting out false information to throw other teams off track of their actual intentions.
Bowles comments about JTS are just that. The good news is that means the Bucs are looking at DE/OLB.
March 26th, 2024 at 2:11 pm
Unless an edge rusher falls in their lap at 26 I’m not as confident as Joe they use a top pick on an edge. There will be other higher rated players at that pick, don’t reach. Besides, it’s only Joe who thinks edge is our biggest need. No edge picked at 26 will be any better then what we already have. Maybe Watts, and Remirez just need a chance to play. They are already light years ahead with the Bucs then let’s say Chop Robinson who has 6 sacks in three years at the college level.
March 26th, 2024 at 2:16 pm
Hmm? Play safety lol?
How about ILB? Just spitballing.
March 26th, 2024 at 2:27 pm
Boss Says:
“not trying to be a critical dooshe……”
Since when???
March 26th, 2024 at 2:49 pm
Tampabaybucfan must be a closet racist because nothing you said was racist so for you to point out your not racist it was kinda odd or you must be drinking already and it slipped out either way keep it off the site
March 26th, 2024 at 2:58 pm
Yea, ask him this same question when they don’t resign him. That sounded like a whole lot of excuses. You don’t draft a 1st rounder (a reach) so that he can set up other guys. I know he has done that, but that’s not what you draft a guy in the 1st round to do.
March 26th, 2024 at 4:14 pm
He probably got vaxxed four times. Maybe the boosters will wear off and he’ll turn into Ted Hendricks this year.
March 26th, 2024 at 4:59 pm
What JTS is not is a starter or premium Edge
March 26th, 2024 at 5:16 pm
I’m not getting bent outta shape on Bowles comments regarding JTS. Anyone who knows football can see JTS lacks physicality n the mental aspect of the game. He plays lost n confused, is weak n dumbfounded. BA would’ve cut him last year. I can’t take no more of watching this kid play another year in a Buc uniform.
March 26th, 2024 at 5:53 pm
Shoyinka is better suited to beach volleyball than tackle football.
March 26th, 2024 at 6:32 pm
For some reason. Bowles has always like Joe Tryon. But us fans cannot see why. Bucs have had entire games where this kid was not even mentioned. Its like he is the ghost on the field. If we are depending on him to give us our pass rush then, God have mercy on us.
March 26th, 2024 at 8:45 pm
Honestly this makes sense. I’ve seen him in coverage a bunch of times and he deff has bin moved all over the field. Bowles said he has many different jobs so that means he’s got the brains to learn it all. He missed a year of college cause he sat out for the sickness. Super raw. Prob would have bin better for him to just learn 1 position instead of 3 or 4 but Bowles like his players to be versatile.
March 26th, 2024 at 11:05 pm
JTS is a versatile weapon alright, for the other team. Bowles is just sticking up for him. JTS is total garbage and should not be in the NFL.
March 27th, 2024 at 3:17 am
Versatile? Sure ok, I’ll buy that.
Weapon? Um, NO. No opposing OC game-plans for this guy.

An excellent point.
March 27th, 2024 at 4:48 am
he should be sent to Philly to play with another loafer
March 27th, 2024 at 6:43 am
Hasnt lived up to 1st round ability…. if he had they would of renewed the contract..
March 29th, 2024 at 12:07 am
BA may have been serious Joe. But the old saying about Jack of all, Master of none comes to mind.
BTW you can’t buy into Bowles coach speak Joe. Remember Diva is his best player…If they are moving JTS around, it’s because they are trying to keep offensive coordinators from running or passing at him Joe!
LOL
Go Bucs!
