The Todd Bowles Effect
March 20th, 2024There is something going on with the Bucs that can only be labeled a good thing.
Remember when the only way the Bucs could sign talented players would be to grossly overpay or lure selfish sleaze other teams didn’t want (DeSean Jackson, Eric Wright, Anthony Collins, etc.)?
Fun times!
Well, the fact Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht was able to keep all his valued free agents is a sign of bigger success than what it appears on face value, per Albert Breer of SI.com.
Breer believes all these re-signings and bringing another starter who had previously left, Jordan Whitehead, shows that Todd Bowles has developed an organization where players want to play for him.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers did well to get Baker Mayfield and Mike Evans signed before the legal tampering window opened, which is a good sign for the environment that Todd Bowles has created in Tampa after Bruce Arians. Simply put, guys like that aren’t forfeiting a chance to hit the market if they’re not going back to a good place to work.
This makes sense. Remember how Jordan Whitehead went on and on about how much he loved playing for the Bucs and is stoked to be back?
It’s far better to have players who want to be with a team and want to play for its coach, ownership and organization, rather than dudes just looking to cash checks and have their heads in the DR the moment training camp begins.

Give this man his flowers. He is building a culture and, much to the chagrin of the residents MAGAs, that culture is one of bonding.
March 20th, 2024 at 9:11 am
Don’t disagree, Bowles is a player’s coach. Players respect Licht. But who is Albert Breer and why should we care what these national guys say?
March 20th, 2024 at 9:23 am
So how does this explain Bowles getting a 26th in the league ranking from his players on that recent anonymous players poll?
March 20th, 2024 at 9:25 am
Why is there no mention of an edge rusher in this article?
March 20th, 2024 at 9:28 am
Trey was that for the coach or the facilities?
March 20th, 2024 at 9:32 am
I think devin white will come back one day as a better player once he sees reality
March 20th, 2024 at 9:33 am
Good point @Trey. From the player’s perspective, what are the pros and cons of Bowles? Maybe defensive players love him and offensive guys don’t? He could be graded high in interpersonal talks but not in his clock management? I’d love for Joe to have some off the record talks with current and former players.

ChanEpic,
What do so called MAGA’s have to do with Coach Bowles? You are interjecting a political theme into a coaching decision? Most see Bowles for what he is; a patient, trustworthy, and competent coach who the players seem to like. This is a football website. Please keep your politics out of it.

I just looked at the NFLPA survey, Bowles’ grade is B- and ranked 28th:
90% of players feel that head coach Todd Bowles is efficient with their time (18th overall)
The players feel that Todd Bowles is somewhat willing to listen to the locker room (25th overall)

johnny lanyard and jimmy nunya once told me “be careful what ya fish for”…
and to this day i have no idea what it freakin’ means
March 20th, 2024 at 10:15 am
@Joe, I’d be careful with headlines and stories such as this. You’re going to trigger all the Bowles haters!

JimBobBuc Says:

IMO, it’s really not as important as to how the offensive guys feel about him as they’re mostly dealing with the offensive coaches.
If they love their new OC, position coach, and teammates they’ll be happy on the team even if they’re not a big fan of Bowles. But I suspect the great majority (if not all) of the players on offense ARE ok with him.
At the end of every season the coaches are evaluated just as the players are. Any weaknesses Bowles has as headcoach should be addressed. He did seem to make some positive changes by the end of last season.
He seems to have some clock management issues but I feel he did a great job last season at helping a first-time OC/playcaller get settled in and then not crash and burn during the mid-season losing streak. Had Canales not been handled right it could have killed his confidence.

ChanEpic got his libtard feelings hurt, and we’re not even talking politics. Amazing how sensitive all these facists have become.

I think that ranking 26 in the league is about the organization and things like training facilities, media attention and so on not the HC. Just think about how the Glazers do things, they don’t broadcast much of their transactions. When Brady or Mayfield signed, it wasn’t broadcasted. These are just my thoughts on why the Bucs end up 26th
March 20th, 2024 at 11:45 am
In the middle of the season the JBF poll showed that 9 out of 10 had either little or no confidence in Bowles. If the Bucs were in any other division in the NFL, they would not have won a wildcard, much less the division. Signing our own free agents would have been much different, and our draft needs and opportunities would have been totally different. Hopefully 2024 will show great improvement, but I remember the clock management and scheme mistakes that good coaches would never have made. Please prove me wrong. Beat the good teams this year.

MAGAs whining again.. Shocking.

Why does MAGA come into the conversation? Doesn’t take much to trigger the libtards anymore. Maybe bc TB will be casting a vote for the MAGA king and that kills the imbeciles who only see color and the oppressed as a virtue.
March 20th, 2024 at 1:31 pm
Chan I think you meant to say MAGA’s winning again. I know it hurts but you’ll feel better once you move to Canada
March 20th, 2024 at 1:34 pm
What does MAGA have to do with anything? Is there some connection I’m not seeing?
March 20th, 2024 at 1:56 pm
I despise Trump, but why are we bringing up anything MAGA? Has no place in football. Make Football Politic Free Again!

Boy did we show the world how America was great again on Jan 6th!! 🤦♀️
March 20th, 2024 at 2:06 pm
The Bucs are winning the off season so far…they’ll do the same in the draft. Bowles keeps nurturing this culture of accountability and responsibility (ie #45, see ya!) I’m looking forward to this draft…Bigley!!
March 20th, 2024 at 4:00 pm
So this means if Bucs lose south this year, we all should go after the league and claim a fraud season?
March 20th, 2024 at 4:42 pm
Again perhaps it was the result of such low expectations but this team entertained me last year. I loved Baker’s style and watching ME13 have yet another HOF level season with the growth of young players…it was fun…and winning yet ANOTHER Division title didn’t hurt.
This upcoming team looks to have some real “entertainment” as well a winning ability.
Yes another edge rusher is essential and another powerful OL and a power RB…3 positions that should be filled in the draft or FA or a combo.
This team has the ability to be top ten on both sides of the ball and one important aspect that’s not mentioned as much…SPECIAL TEAMS. The Bucs now have the best kicking pair in the league. The kicking game is a genuine asset that could pay some nice dividends next year.

Most players stay put if the money is right.
This weird “top free agent class” spin for Licht and now Bowles befuddles me.

Hey Joe, time to toss the Chinese trolls and their election year mischief.
