Jordan Whitehead Returns To Bucs

March 13th, 2024

Back home.

There were rumblings on social media from Bucs players/defenders over the weekend this may happen. And it did.

Former hard-hitting Bucs safety Jordan Whitehead has signed back with the team that drafted him in 2018, Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report reported.

Jenna Laine of ESPN says it is a two-year deal where Whitehead could pocket up to $10.5 million.

Whitehead had a career year with picks and and pass breakups with the Jets last season.

This is great news the Bucs got one of their own back. Joe wonders if Whitehead and his ex-Bucs cheerleader girlfriend are still a thing? She even went to his contract signing ceremony wearing green when Whitehead was picked up by the Jets.

So yeah, this is exciting news that the Bucs have another quality starting safety. Now, will ya’ go get a friggin’ pass rusher? Pretty please???

Yes!!! Great job Jason!!! Now bring back Mike Edwards to complete our safety room!

  2. Weebs10 Says:

Love it! This makes Winfield happy too I bet

  3. Usedtocould Says:

    Yes! LFG

  4. Dew Says:

Now trade for Bosa with new contract. Maybe they throw in Mack. Lol

  5. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

Yes, a pass rusher is priority #1 and will always be on defense. We’ve been trying to replace him since he left and I’m glad he’s back. Sure tackling in today’s game isn’t easy to find and Whitehead brings that. Especially with the weapons and big play ability of the falcons, chiefs, etc on our schedule. We need this hitter and familiarity in our secondary.

  6. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Thank you Jason Licht!

  7. K2 Says:

    Awesome!

Edge, OG or Center, TE…we need a couple more piece to give us max draft flexibility. Would love to pick up a solid Edge…because our draft selections haven’t been great, at that position. Getting a guard or center and still drafting one makes sense as well.

  8. BucFanDMV Says:

    Outstanding signing here!

  9. Tbbucs3 Says:

I heard Ryan Neal is signing a 3 year $7.25 an hour deal with Subway

  10. JimBobBuc Says:

Welcome home Jordan! LFG! I wonder if the Bowles effect helped bring him back?

Way to go Licht! You’ve got an A from me so far this FA period, let’s make it an A+ with an edge rusher!

  11. Zoocomics Says:

At this point in free agency, we’re looking for a Nassib. A high motor guy with potential that can set the edge. JTS will be eaten alive if we roll him out there week 1.

  12. Joseph C Simmons Says:

He’s a small guy who hits hard, so even at his age I’d consider him kind of “high mileage”. Hope he still has it through this contract. If so, this is a very good get.

I imagine Izien stays as a third safety that could back up at corner as well. Dean and Zyon McCollum start at safety, and we’ll HAVE to find a nickel corner. OR, Izien becomes the nickel, and Delaney is the third safety.

Regardless, we have to find another corner before next season.

  13. Beeej Says:

The difference between Whitehead and Ryan Neal was probably 11 wins versus 9 wins

  14. Joseph C Simmons Says:

CORRECTION: Dean and McCollum start at corner, of course.

  15. Cobraboy Says:

Mack, come chase a ring in Tampa…

  16. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Dew

Bosa has had 11 documented injuries already including 3 grade 1 concussions.

He has a durability score of 2.78 out of 5.

% chance of injury in 2024 is 89% based on historical data…

Unless he signs for the league minimum plus incentives I will pass.

  17. Beeej Says:

ARE there any good edges we could trade up for?

  18. Truth be Told Says:

Nice signing to stabilize the Safety position. Let’s get a Pass Rusher or 2 and a interior lineman on O and we are close.Go Bucs!

  19. T. Says:

    Nice !

  20. A Bucs Fan Says:

Whitehead is the perfect complement to AW31. Now they need to trade for an EDGE rusher and sign a vet guard on the cheap (maybe risner)? Then draft the rest.

  21. First Name Greatest Says:

Meh, he got those INT’s playing behind a great rush. Our pass defensive scheme and edge rush is baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaddddddddddddddddddddddd

  22. Tbbucs3 Says:

I would technically want Mike Edwards back also but thats a pipedream since he wouldnt want to be a backup after winning a superbowl as a starting safety on the NFLs #1 defense

  23. Boge Says:

I’d draft a CB in round one and trade one of our day 2 picks for a DE. Then address the oline with our other day 2 picks.

  24. bucsfan951 Says:

the pass rush or lack of is scary to think about. imagine if the bucs can swing a trade for reddick. from there, the bucs draft board just opens up (except for a glaring need at cb imo)

  25. Joe in Wisconsin Says:

    2nd the Khalil Mack pursuit

  26. Statguy Says:

Edwards would rather play nba2k that’s why he is no longer here.

  27. Upstate NY BUC Says:

    Reddick please!! Go Bucs

  28. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Cobra

Mack is staying with LA and just revised his contract in order to do so…

  29. Dew Says:

Could Jason use the 3rd round pick to trade down for an Edge?

  30. Duane in Sanford Says:

This is a great player to pick up. He is stout against the run, is a tone setter, and I cant wait to see him paired up with Winfield. When people ask about where the pass rush is coming from, here is your answer. Coach Bowles is going to blitz with Lavonte, Winfield, Zyon, and Whitehead. We do have young pass rushers on the dline, but they wont get to see the field until they round out their game. I will not knock on this approach, as someone has pointed out that this defense consistently blitzes and averages about 46-48 sacks a season. Let Bowles cook this season.

  31. Aceofaerospace Says:

    Welcome back Jack-Hammer.

  32. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

    YESSSSSSSS

  33. heyjude Says:

Yes! This is great news! Now Mack.
Bosa has way too many injuries.

  34. SlyPirate Says:

    HUGE WIN!

Great player. Knows the system. Knows Winfield. Good contract.

    Next up: Pass Rush?

    (Dare to dream)

  35. ModHairKen Says:

Fantastic news. Big mistake letting him leave in the first instance. Figure out what the Jets did to maximize his play and emulate.

  36. IrishTony Says:

Great news. I was hoping this happened

  37. Allbuccedup Says:

    YEAH perfect complement for Winfield.

  38. Boss Says:

    The Boss approves.

  39. Conner50 Says:

Dang it’s great to be a Buc fan! Jason Licht hats off to you sir I was hoping he’d sign Whitehead back but didn’t think he could. Heck yea fire the cannons get the party boats ready!

  40. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Welcome home son

  41. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Statguy

Mike Edwards has 3 career pick 6s and 2 superbowl wins. Could care less what video games he likes, surprised that players have lives outside of football?

  42. St.louis Bucs Fan Says:

Can we please trade the 2nd rounder for Reddick and sign him??
Not sure what a rework contract would look like but I know Reddick would great in Pewter and Red!! Love this signing!!
    LFG!!!!

  43. Usfbucs Says:

    Awesome signing

  44. J Says:

    Thank god

  45. Conner50 Says:

This now makes us the best safety duo in the league no matter what lousy sports writer posts. Now let’s get that interior line and some pass rushers in the draft and win the Super Bowl by god

  46. ATLBuc Says:

I can’t wait to see how Watts develops this spring. He was a beast when he was able to get on the field.

  47. Curse of Gruden Says:

I heard Ryan Neal is holding out for a 3-year contract at $8.00 an hour from Jersey Mikes.

  48. Usfbucs Says:

I have this feeling that we are going to wind up picking twice in the first round, having dreams of another Sapp and Brooks type first round for us this year.

  49. Usfbucs Says:

Or do we trade future picks for Mack and figure out a way to fit his contract and draft a IOL in the first

  50. Conner50 Says:

    @Curs of Gruden
Best comment of the day lmao

  51. Vancouver Buc Says:

Should’ve never have let go in the first place

  52. PbnJ Says:

    Pitt U South

Panthers on all 3 levels now.

    Kacey-Dennis-Whitehead

  53. PbnJ Says:

    Kancey

    Seriously spellchecker?

  54. Buc1987 Says:

    Awesome news!

  55. Keimosabe Says:

LFG!!!! Best safety duo in the league imo

  56. Keimosabe Says:

@usbucs how u figure that with where we’re picking???

  57. sweti_yeti Says:

I can’t believe we got him for that price.

  58. BucsFan81 Says:

We now have the best safety tandem in the league. Hell yes love this signing

  59. Usfbucs Says:

@Keimoaabe- easy we trade up into the first from the second round using future picks

  60. Bucs Guy Says:

Great! Hated to see him leave 2 years ago. Cross S off the draft list.

  61. NJbucs23 Says:

    My boy is back !!

  62. BUCman Says:

Josh Sweat is best option as a trade for an edge rusher. He is turning 27 and has a manageable cap hit for 2024 of 9 million. Riddick is turning 30 and has a cap hit of nearly 22 million. Bosa is too injury riddled. Mack just reworked his contract to stay in LA.

  63. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

Yes! This was one of the two free agents that I thought we might be able to afford.

Now go out and get the other one–Jon Runyan.

  64. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

Never mind on Jon Runyan Jr. The Giants already signed him.

  65. Commander Says:

Jordan + Zyon > Carlton and our last SS.

  66. D-Rok Says:

Whitehead is a light Ronnie Lott. Love this signing, and let the fear creep in from WR’s we face!

He’s gonna light up SOMEBODY this year. Who will it be?

  67. Why Not Says:

This signing should improve our run defense.

  68. gotbbucs Says:

Was hoping this would happen. Great signing. Already knows the system, should seamlessly slide right back in.

  69. Bucsalltheway Says:

Our defense just got nasty again lfg bucs…I might have to get licht a gift myself…

  70. Noclu4u Says:

Jackson Powers Johnson or Graham Barton. Going after a D-lineman at 26th is risky . Odds are you have a better chance at hitting on an O-linman than a D-lineman at that spot . Not saying it doesn’t happen but your more likely to get a JTS than a Wirfs .Diaby is gonna have around 13 sacks this year if he stays healthy. Would be amazing if they got Reddick and drafted Jackson Powers Johnson. If Bucs can average 130-150 a game the offense could be scary good.
    As always GO BUCS

  71. brooks Says:

    Good sign

  72. Brian in St Pete Says:

Guys, all this “Get a pass rusher! Get a pass rusher!”. These are the ramblings of Madden gamers. You don’t think that Licht and Bowles would love to snap their fingers and do a “create-a-player” that will get them 15 sacks a year? Even if a premier edge was available (one isn’t), we have less than $3.5M to spend as it stands currently. That’s just about enough to sign our draft picks. Surely there will be some restructures ahead to help free up space, but at best that will be used to maybe grab a hidden gem with potential like we did with Shaq in 2019. We were NEVER going to be in the market for a big name edge (or any other position) this off season. It was always about resigning our guys. The edge play this year will have to come from the development of our young OLB room (YaYa, watts, Rodriguez, etc) and potentially the draft. And all of you hoping to draft a nameless faceless stud pass rusher, this will not be a draft that you like. It’s a weak edge class. This is just the reality of it.

  73. b4l Says:

    GO BUCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  74. ThatAintRight! Says:

That’s great news. Good signing he was good defender. He works well in our system. Had experience and has done well in the past. Fans were pleased with him prior to leaving. I still see (4) needed starters on defense and at least two on offense.

Hopefully DE, ILB , OLB are very high on the board come draft day. I don’t see a clear cut star C available in the draft which kinda sucks. Maybe we can groom one or find a hidden gem similar to Ali Marpet.
    I personally hope we score

Missouri DL Darius Robinson. He’s a monster. He would be amazing next to Vita Vea and Calijah Kancey. Would be a very disruptive physical aggressive DL. LVD is back so that’s always great news to hear. Winfield is back and we got YaYa so all is well. Maybe score an ILB/OLB for rd 2. Then two 3rd round picks 89 + 92. Good opportunities to find BPA. Maybe C or CB.

  75. ThatAintRight! Says:

Jackson Powers Johnson is a very important position C for our needs. As is Graham Barton LG, however that being said and all I wouldn’t be so sure about going C this year. Nobody really stands out to me as pro bowl caliber C. Thats what I worry about. Drafting someone to be the guy and they need to get it right. The other thing is very few skilled athletic 3-4 DEs are available in the draft with physical and athletic abilities, as well as that elite football mentality like Darius Robinson. You could go C this year and then skip on Robinson, but then now what happens when next two years we can’t find a skilled DE. Logan hall isn’t cutting it and Will Gholston is about done. We could score both maybe. If we trade up from round 3 both picks and the rd 2 pick to get into the first. That would be an interesting move. 🤔

  76. Tampa2ATL Says:

Yes, sir! Looking forward to watching Whitehead THUMP THUMP party on Buccaneer opponents again. Giddy-up…

  77. TampabayDJ Says:

J.L. is killing it in free agency ! Anyone who says otherwise obviously doesn’t know anything about football, real football, not your Madden video games. And its not even the end of the first week ! So everyone chill out and let them do their jobs. Notice that nobody is climbing over each other for Devin White’s services ? If he isn’t signed, then JL should sign him on the cheap and let him rush the passer . He would probably be good at that. Jordan takes a lot of pressure off A.W.jr to do everything. And Zion is ready to take over for Davis. Davis was just not played to his strengths, he’s a press corner, not a zone CB . Now give Godwin and Wirfs an extension, free up some more cap and our Bucs will be in great shape.

  78. Debbie⁴ Says:

Welcome back home. Tad bit cold up there wasn’t it?
