Mike Evans Signs Two-Year Deal

March 4th, 2024

He’s back!

The greatest wide receiver in Bucs history and a future Hall of Famer, Mike Evans will remain with the Bucs.

That’s the word from Adam Schefter of BSPN. Evans signed a $52 million contract that will keep him in Tampa Bay for the next two seasons.

Now that this is out of the way, the Bucs can now focus on signing their other big-name free agents. Joe is looking for quarterback Baker Mayfield to sign shortly.

Tomorrow is the final day Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht can slap a free agent with the franchise tag.

Deal is done. Not announced yet as the Mayfield deal is close as well. Not sure if they are waiting for a dual announcement or what.

    YES, YES, YES!!!

  5. doolnutts Says:

How do people still complain about JL? It’s not even just about draft picks, salary cap etc. He’s built a culture that makes people want to stay period end of story. Culture starts at the top and the bucs culture has transformed from a dumpster fire to a place that people actually want to be.

  6. bucnjim Says:

Excellent work done by everyone involved!

  7. St.louis Bucs Fan Says:

What kind of cap space does this leave us with?
Hope we have enough to lock up others and maybe bring in O-line depth and an edge rusher. Great day to be a Bucs fan, and on a Monday no less! LFG!!

    GO BUCS

  9. Nicholas Carlson Says:

FANTASTIC! We have a great GM, folks.

  10. David Says:

Baker will sign within the week.

  11. DungyDance Says:

Very, very good news. A bit surprising that he’d go for only a 2 yr deal, with “only” $35M guaranteed. But who cares now. Go Bucs!

  12. Dewey Selmon Says:

There is a chance we can sign Baker and Winfield and not have to use the franchise tag.

  13. Oddball Says:

Wow! Didn’t see that coming. I guess Beckles didn’t either…

  14. Tony Marks Says:

Fair deal. 35 mill guaranteed and consideration for age with a two year deal. This sure is an in your face to the haters talking about Mike not considering Baker in his agent’s comments about elite.

Wouldn’t be surprised to hear a Baker deal announced within 24 hours.

  15. Lt. Dan Says:

@ St. Louis: Look no further than the Saints model for cap manipulation. There is always a way to create more cap space. “Cap” tip to you JL.

  16. FortMyersDave Says:

Awesome. Looks like he also took a bit of a home town discount.

St Louis: Mike’s deal could be stacked in a way where the Bucs will still have plenty of this year’s cap to spend on their other targets they wish to keep on the roster. That Greenberg dude seems to be one of the best capologists in the league.

  17. Rover Says:

    LFG !!! Go Bucs!!!

Jason Licht for the win! All you Baker fanatics should be happy now if he comes back to Tampa, now he will have someone to make him look like a legit qb again

  21. Bobby M. Says:

Thought he would get $60 million, $35 guaranteed seems like a bargain.

  22. SlyPirate Says:

WHAT 2 YEARS TELLS US ABOUT MIKE EVANS …

    1. THE RECORD. Rice holds the record for 1K seasons at 11. Mike has 10. Mike wants the record at 12.

    2. LEGENDARY. Mike can retire after 2 years as the only WR in history to never have less than 1k.

  23. Cobraboy Says:

    Mayfield signs, Winfield gets tagged.

  34. teacherman777 Says:

    I hope it’s fully guaranteed.

    He deserves it.

  35. Kalind Says:

Gotta mean Bakes deal is essentially done. Mike wanted a quality QB

  36. SteveK Says:

    This sparks joy!

  37. Marine Buc Says:

    Cool.

I’m glad he is back and the Bucs didn’t overpay him. I’m a little surprised it is only a two year deal.

  38. DBS Says:

So he gone right? So much for all our experts and those with crystal balls that know what the team and players will and will not do. Now go eat some crow.

  39. FactoBlaq Says:

Tag winfield now, and get him and Wirfs done long term. Move on from Baker, draft a QB and let him fight it out with trask. pick up Austin ekler or Saquon to complement Rashad white and dominate the nfc south into the playoffs and beyond.

  40. Steven007 Says:

Surprised at the two-year deal too, but it seems to make sense. For the Bucs in particular. Thought Mike would want a 4-year or at least 3-year deal. Nice surprise this morning.

  41. David Says:

    Baker within the week

I do not believe they franchise Winfield. I think it’s cheaper to do a long-term deal and spread it out, especially with another big jump in the salary cap next year.

I think they do the same with Wirfs, but that’s not as critical yet.

The kicker will be signed within a week as well.

And I think LVD has a two-year deal, to retire as a Buccaneer also

Carlton Davis is probably traded before the draft. I would prefer if they traded Dean, because healthy Davis is a stud, but they can’t afford both corners at those salaries to be hurt so often, so one has to go. Davis makes the most sense financially and draft returns.

  42. Lt. Dan Says:

@Marine: Two year deal..it has to be Mike’s age. The Bucs brass said they wanted a deal that was good for both sides.

    @teacher: 35 million guaranteed.

  43. Capt.Tim Says:

    Fantastic News. Welcome back Mike!

  44. FairMinded Says:

Love this. This sends a message league wide we take care of our own! Welcome back Mike now break some more records!

  45. Saskbucs Says:

What a happy day! Wooo. Licht and co. What can you say? I can’t believe there was ever a doubt. Gotta assume the Baker and Winfield shoes drop in the next 36 hours before the tag deadline.

  46. Usfbucs Says:

Glad they got it done, and the price wasn’t as bad as some where saying

  47. CTBucs Says:

Hell yes. This was my biggest fear this off-season. I am confident now that we won’t be losing anyone major and will be able to build the team. I see some cap management to create some more room for some free agents on edge and IOL

  48. Conner50 Says:

  50. Chris K Says:

We need every donkey who said “bye” when it came to Mike Evans and said there’s no way he stays here because of his chances of winning to leave now and go be a donkey on whatever team site you really root for. You’ll probably change your screen names though instead as that is standard practice for the same guys who never know WTF they are talking about once they are proven wrong. Either way, the majority of us are glad that the donkeys were proven to be stupid yet again.

Sorry dufus. I have nothing to do with it. It was Evans agent that said he would only sign with a team with an elite QB and one he could win a ring with . So Its Evans schooling you.

Do I think baker is top five? no.

Does evans think he can win a ring with baker? yes he just signed and darn sure it wasn’t for Trask. You got enough egg on your face to not worry about breakfast for the week.

  54. Dom Says:

  56. SteveK Says:

Mike Wvans caught 12TDs one year from the likes of Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

I agree Mike is good enough at WR to be #1 and “win a ring” with that kind of guy.

No one cares what you say poor sap ( another David acount or regular hater account?). Evans through his agent said he wouldn’t play for a QB that was not a stud and then a business day later signs with the bucs who are trying to sign Baker as Qb1

Your spin will forever lose. Evans ha spoken and trumps a nobody opinion on Qbs.

  62. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    $35M guaranteed is excellent discount!

I’m guessing he knows the Bucs will rework his contract next year to save money on the cap, adding another year and bonus.

IF they must use the franchise tag, I hope they use it on our kicker. Cheaper.

But I suspect they will not need to use the tag.

  63. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Wondering if Mayfield will be a 2 year deal as well.

It is too bad they did not do this like last week, it would of saved something like 7M on the cap. Oh well, he is signed and hopefully retires as a Buc. I like loyalty driven both ways.

“I have nothing to do with it. It was Evans agent that said he would only sign with a team with an elite QB and one he could win a ring with . So Its Evans schooling you.”

What an agent says doesn’t really matter. Opinions don’t matter. Facts do.

And the facts place Mayfield at #16 in the NFL. That’s with all his stats averaged last year. Facts.

That’s why when Joe says he will likely regress…that doesn’t make me happy at all. In my mind, he should progress, not regress.

The good news is Baker convinced me it’s at least possible last year. Still a risk though.

  67. Conner50 Says:

    @Tony Marks
Evans is a class act and will not say that baker is average, he praised Winston for crying out loud. Of course you wasn’t around for those days cause your not a real Buc fan so I wouldn’t expect you to know that. I’m good tho I wanted Evans re signed first, then Winfield and David. Baker can hit the free agency market for all I care. We re sign him that’s ok too just won’t win a Super Bowl with him is all

  70. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

So far as Trask, it is what it is. He didn’t actually get a fair shake, but it is done with now.

  72. Aaron Says:

Nothing new with you. Same silliness. First, agents speak for their clients all the time. So what they express is a valued source no matter how it hurts your feeeelings. second your silly average stat is just that – silly. Qbs are valued based on passing yards and TDs

Fact Baker is number 8 in TDS
Fact baker is Number 9 in yardage

trying to add on thing like rushing yardage and other metrics in an average is just dumb. Many great Qbs don’t run.

Today I need go no further. You are a nobody compared to Mike Evans on QBs so your opinion is meaningless. today mike signed knowing full well Baker is being negotiated with to be Qb1. His vote of confidence trumps any nonsense you write.

35 million guaranteed and only two years is precisely that – good terms. Nowhere did I ever state Mike was definitely gone just that the bucs were willing to let him walk if the terms wer not right.. Try again.

  84. Chief Says:

Awesome news. Now when Baker signs we will be contenders again.

Baker is a top 10 QB. Mike is a top 5 WR. AWJ is the best at his position.

Anyone still mentioning Trask is delusional. Mike signed because he wants to play with Baker. He knows he’ll get his stats and have an opportunity at a Super Bowl with Baker. Any other opinion is ignorant. Evans made it known what he needed to resign. Saying anything negative about Baker is saying you think Evans is a liar. These are facts.

  90. GhostofBrady Says:

All you Baker Bros out there – y’all are all getting tricked. Baker isn’t elite or a leader. Bucs won’t resign him for $35-45M a year. Mike only signed because he knows the Bucs will go after Cousins or Justin Fields. And they have a solid plan C in Kyle Trask. Mike has played for 10 years with the worst and best of them. He knows duds and studs from experience.

HAHA to the haters… I am posting in jest of course. Baker + Evans + Godwin + the young WRs we have now for next two years. And maybe spend a high draft pick on another WR to have 3 candidates to replace Evans in two years. Baker has got to love that. I’m still crossing my fingers to pair Joe Mixon with Rashaad White. What’s better than a 1200 yard RBs. Two 700-900 yard RBs. I am confident the line play will get better once they’ve had a second year in this offense and more experienced RBs to hit the right hole and consistently get 4-6 yards per carry.

Great news! Evans’ ability to create space combined with his catch radius is what makes him elite. Now, if he can just get used to Baker’s velocity and not make crucial drops like he did last season, the Bucs passing offense will be outstanding!

  95. Ken_from_Canada Says:

Maybe now joe can cool it with the Ian Beckles takes.

  97. GhostofBrady Says:

Mike Evans had 137 targets. Out of top 20 WRs in targets, he was tops in touchdowns and 2nd in 1st down %. He consistently scored and kept drives going.

We see the drops because we watch every snap. Many of the top 10 paid WRs have just as many or more drops. We just don’t see all the targets for these other receivers so we assume all the elite WRs have barely any drops. That’s not the case. True, we would like Evans to have nearly 0 drops, but that’s not realistic given the number of targets he gets and number of passes over 10-30 yards from line of scrimmage he sees.

  102. GhostofBrady Says:

    Rod Munch Says:
“Now get our other HOF players done, Winfield and David, then we can see what is left over for middling Baker.”

Agreed – Baker is currently middling until he shows otherwise in next two years. For those keeping salary scores – Top 12 through 18 QB Annual Average Pay for term of contract:
    12. Daniel Jones $40M
    13. Derek Carr $37.5M
    14. Aaron Rodgers $37.5M
    15. Kirk Cousins $35M
    16. Jared Goff $33.5M
    17. Geno Smith $25M
    18. Jimmy Garoppolo $24.3M
    Average = $33.25
Assuming contract which are for future years are escalate 5% each year for 4 years pay increase (which is below 7.9% increase last year and 14% year before) = $36M Annual Average.

The market for the middling Baker is $36M annual average for 4 year term. Players usually get that or fraction of that year 1 depending on signing bonus and voided years for salary cap play. And 1.5-2.0X of that guaranteed. $60-75M guaranteed.

I don’t think those dreaming of Baker going for $15-25M a year are being realistic. That maybe the cap hit as they string out the contract over voided years. But that 15-25M is not the real cash and overall cap hit.

Bye the way, Spotrac has him at 27.1 AAV. After more digging on how SpotTrac does their calculations, they treat players like they are houses or properties. Basically they guess what other players (homes in same neighborhood) the player aligns and then does an age, salary, % game played and other variables. Totally stupid. They don’t account for playoff victories or any of the more important stats. And their designation of neighborhood greatly skews the player base comparison. Pretty useless other than to be +/-50% range.

Mike was the priority. He and Chris are VERY ALLURING targets that can potentially make any quarterback be great and want to be a Buccaneer! I personally want Baker Mayfield to be our quarterback but if someone out pays him and Tampa can’t match, the pool of quarterback positions would be very attracted to the talent he would have to work with. Baker should be signed sometime this week somewhere hopefully here. Go Buccaneers! Lavonte, Twan Winfield and the kicker would be masterful achievements and the icing on the cake would be to extend Wirfs! Love Joe Bucs Fans!

After a long day of no phone access, I am completely overjoyed. Now Baler can sign a good deal or be tagged.

    Boom! Licht, well done!!!!

  109. Vanessa Anne Says:

OMG, I am so overjoyed!!! This is wonderful news! Thrilled that Mike will remain a Buc, and ideally retire as one. Yay!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

  110. TF Says:

Okay here goes, gonna catch heat…. I’m happy AF we got Evans signed. This will move him up the ladder to top 3 MINIMUM of All time Bucs. And that’s including LeRoy. I’ll review his story when it is completely written in 2 years. That being said… Mike HAS to hold onto the ball this year. His drops were WAY too many for a HOF WRs. Even he will admit that.

  111. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Sign Winfield to 3 year $55 mill deal and offer Bayfield a take it or leave it deal just to tick off all the fangoils.

  112. Go bucs Smokey Says:

I wish it would have been a 4 year deal but at least the Bucs kept him here for 2 more years no reason Mike shouldn’t retire a Buc he put the team on his shoulders for years!!!!!
