Report: Front Office Suits In New England Like Baker Mayfield

March 1st, 2024

“I should have thought of this last year.”

OK, maybe Joe has found another team that has Bucs free agent quarterback Baker Mayfield on its radar.

Joe always suspected the Dixie Chicks would make a run at Mayfield. Given that their new offensive coordinator, Zac Robinson, was Mayfield’s quarterback coach in Los Angeles in 2022, the dots can be connected.

But it seems the team formerly known as the Belicheats is eyeing Mayfield. Yeah, Joe knows the Patriots front office is full of guys who were working in Cleveland when Mayfield was drafted.

But now a long-time Patriots beat guy has put his name to a story suggesting a link between Mayfield and New England. Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald says there may be some smoke that New England is kicking the tires on Mayfield.

Mayfield has supporters from within the Patriots’ organization, per sources, but there are some impediments to signing him. It’s not a surprise that Mayfield is liked by members of the staff. He was drafted by a front office that included current Patriots de facto general manager Eliot Wolf and coached by offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney with the Browns. Patriots senior personnel advisor Pat Stewart and senior offensive assistant Ben McAdoo spent time with Mayfield with the Panthers, as well.

One of those “impediments” is the Bucs want Mayfield back. Another is New England has the No. 3 pick in the draft. They are in prime position to get Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels.

If New England plans on drafting a quarterback at No. 3, why the hell would they then sign Mayfield unless New England wants to have the rookie sit a year or two?

And would Mayfield sign with a team where he knows he’s a placeholder if not a babysitter? At least with the Bucs if he plays OK, Mayfield knows he’s not going to lose his job for a couple of years.

Joe says:”If New England plans on drafting a quarterback at No. 3, why the hell would they then sign Mayfield unless New England wants to have the rookie sit a year or two?”

Because NE can get a boatload trading #3 for picks/ vets

  2. Dewey Selmon Says:

If they sign Baker and draft Harrison Jr they could be set for 7-10 years.

  3. Dave Pear Says:

Can’t be. Oneilgirl assures us all that Baker is trash, as she thought Tom Brady was. Girl knows quarterbacks, don’t argue with her.

  4. Nicholas Carlson Says:

Well too damn bad for them! QBs go from NE to TB, not the other way around 😉

  5. Dave Pear Says:

Can’t be. We are assured by JL’s private QB consultant that Baker is no good.

  6. Saskbucs Says:

No chance of losing Baker to NE. It’s TB or ATL with MIN and LV maybe lurking. MIN and LV domes with good WRs. No way Baker is going back to cold weather and taking a weapons downgrade. He has to be thinking about not just this contract but the next one as well at 32-33 years old. Best way to do that, stay where it’s warm and have continuity with coaches/WRs.

  7. Hodad Says:

If they pass on a QB sitting at #3 they should all be fired. Patriots don’t pay anyone. I take that back, hand jobs the owner is willing to pay, but I’d bet not more then 20 bucks.

  8. ^^mtn^^ Says:

“Dewey Selmon Says:If they sign Baker and draft Harrison Jr they could be set for 7-10 years”

    This too.

They could keep Mac on his rookie contract to ‘compete/ back up -win, win situation

  9. Bubby Says:

I’m a baker fan, but he wants to play this out then let him go. It would destroy his career if he joined another bad situation.

  10. DBS Says:

We will find out who is offering the most .Does Baker really want to stay with the Bucs or will he chase the money. Also how much does Evans play into this equation? Fun times ahead.

  11. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Slow day at Joe Bucs . Com??????

No way Baker goes to NE when NE has the #3 overall pick—-NO WAY.

  12. Shane Callahan Says:

Baker wants to win, and TB gives him the best opportunity if they get interior lineman and a consistent defense. I think the new playcaller is a significant upgrade. Go Bucs!

  13. Shane Callahan Says:

(NE lost their chance when they passed on him when HE elected to leave the terrible Panthers.)

  14. Tony Marks Says:

New regime passes on a top three in the draft Qb to Pay 30+ million?

Gm would have to have some big ones to take that career risk.

long shot. I’d more see Steelers making a play.

  15. Since76 Says:

I hope baker gets his money that he deserves in NE. Not here. Give players that consistently play well week in and week out.

  16. It's Corn Says:

    “sources” = Mayfield’s agent?

  17. Tye Says:

Never cared for rumor (lie) season weeks before free agency!

  18. Buc4evr Says:

Baker would be chewed up and spit out in NE. Way worse than Cleveland. If he goes there he better get a lot of guaranteed money.

  19. BakerFan Says:

trying to remember what DICK on here told me there was NO WAY Mayfield would get $40M, which my prediction was 35 to 38 without competition and 40 to 45 with competition. I will have to see who that was once he is signed so I can rub his ignorant nose in it. Fess up now, it could of been Marine Buc or Boss Buc

Baker wants to win, and TB gives him the best opportunity

    ………………
Not really…. Atlanta, Minnesota, Raiders, Stealers are all poised to have a great team if Baker chooses them over the Bucs, especially if Evans is not around.

  21. Bojim Says:

Bucs will get Evans and Mayfield by tag or contract.

  22. BakerFan Says:

They will not tag Mayfield…..that is a 36M hit for this year. They will give him a contract that will hit about 2M the 1st year on cap money with the rest being bonus money. That way they can sign the other 4.

  23. Let em bake Says:

There’s nothing like being desired by many suitors. Licht has to overpay a bit to avoid a bidding war. The question is which team will gaurantee a 5 th year? Licht may have to sweeten the signing bonus to offset say, the raiders, offering a guaranteed 5 th year. It won’t happen, but I’d love to see the bidding war unfold.

  24. SlyPirate Says:

New England has $90M in cap space!

Baker and Evans. That would be a major play. Funny too after the Bucs landed TB12 and Gronk.

  25. heyjude Says:

SlyPirate could be onto something there. That would be ironic. I sure hope not. They both need to stay here. I also agree with Dewey and ^^mtn^^ too. More possibilities.

  26. Bojim Says:

In other news. Center Nick Gates has been released by Washington. Sounds a little like Jenson. Plays past the whistle.

  27. BakerBucs Says:

Since 76 says I wish u r posts were consistent enough to send u to another site to post stupid stuff that’s the only thing u do regularly good post stupid stuff u r obviously an old man with grandpa brain cells old & worn out like those jokers Wade& willis

  28. mark2001 Says:

Of course, if the Pat would sign Mayfield, they may be able to get a boatload of picks for that number 3 draft pick, and fill some other needs. I see nothing that would make me think that pick would stand in the way of a Mayfield deal.

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I like it. If the Pats sign him, another QB will slide further. Let them! Sign Russel Wilson as a bridge and draft one!

  30. Buccos Says:

Pats sign Mayfield and draft Marvin Harrison Jr. All of a sudden they are pretty good

  31. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Baker Fan

Sorry to disappoint you buddy but I have been saying 3 years @ $90M with $45M guaranteed with an additional 4th year option (non-guaranteed) at @ $40M.

Been saying the same thing for several months now and I’m still hoping for the same thing.

You got me mixed up because I made fun of you wearing Star Wars pajamas…

  32. Boss Says:

Let bake walk right to NE…

    Hope mike goes with him…..

    They can have lovie too…..

  33. Capt.Tim Says:

    Lol.
Now everybody was predicting 40 mil a year.
I was laughing 2 weeks ago, when everyone here was predicting 15, saying 20 mil was way to much.
Its always been 40 mil. If We’re lucky.

  34. ^^mtn^^ Says:

    “Marine Buc Says:Star Wars pajamas…”

Oh, thought BakerFan was in Whinnie The Pooh PJs. Thanks for the correction, will make a note.

Seriously tho, Bucs gave a 4th or 5th to NE for Gronk but yes, we’ll see if ME & BM go for the $ or the Bucs there SlyPirate

  35. BA's Red Pen Says:

Who’s that homeless looking slob om the thumbnail?

  36. Dreambig Says:

Not sure of the timing for that front office staff leaving Cleveland vs Mayfield leaving but if those are the same guys who bailed on Mayfiled in Cleveland, he is not signing up with those guys.

  37. mark2001 Says:

Bonzai… 10 teams wanting QB’s in the first round…most of them ahead of us. So don’t count on one team being out of that race to make a substantial impact, unless we find a golden nugget in a mound of clay. As I said last year…with the playoffs that ship sailed.

  38. Marine Buc Says:

    @ mark

Michael Pratt from Tulane in the 4th round would be OK with me.

But we have K. Trask for one more season as a back-up QB so I highly doubt it will happen.

Our GM doesn’t like to admit his mistakes…

  39. mg Says:

Baker seems like a smart man. He will avoid Mandarin Bob like the China flu.

  40. Tony Marks Says:

“and senior offensive assistant Ben McAdoo spent time with Mayfield with the Panthers, as well.”

You have to know the history of Mayfield to know why those last two names tanks the whole idea.

it was Mcadoo’s offense that nearly ended Baker’s career. Mayfield wants no part of anything to do with the panthers.

  41. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    mark2001, you are probably right.

But I’ve been hearing how this draft is deep with QBs. To me, that means we could take one say, in the 3rd round, and have a slight chance to strike gold. I believe we have three 3rd rounds? (I think)

I do believe Mayfield earned a spot on the roster here…and I believe he absolutely earned more than he made last year.

But…there is still uncertainty with him. If $40m is really the number being discussed, I would rather franchise him or let him walk.

He is still a HUGE gamble.

  42. Beeej Says:

Baker thru a lot of picks in 2019, no way the Pats should sign him

  43. SlyPirate Says:

    A LICHT MUST SEE

An SI reporters tracked down Jason Licht at the Combine. Y’all remember EVERYONE picked the Bucs to finish last at the beginning of last year. Turns out Licht pays attention to exactly who says what.

    Check it out on X!

  44. Ramblin_Man Says:

Just read on PFR that Evans fully intends to hit free agency and listen to offers.

  45. 904 Bucfan Says:

In order of priority with resign money 1 Wirfs young elite player @ premium position 2 Winfield young elite player 3 ME older consistently elite player 4 LVD even older consistently elite player.5 No reason to reach for Mayfield. Use other $ to sign rush help, proven LG, and TE who blocks and receives. Sign or draft Bruiser RB. Draft a C, ILB, S and a flyer QB. Oh and resign our PK. Put a strong team out there and if Mayfield gets too expensive – let him go. With that solid of a team we can find a QB who can win the South.

  46. Beeej Says:

If I were him, I’d wanna know too

  47. Bucben61 Says:

If we can get Baker long term for around $40 million per year that would be a smart investment…this time next year the $$$ numbers will be higher and will be going up every off season…lock him up 5 years $200 million….if he continues to play at a competitive level the bucs have a great bargain at QB and can continue to build around him….of course he would have to agree

  48. heyjude Says:

Ramblin_Man said: “Just read on PFR that Evans fully intends to hit free agency and listen to offers.”

Oh no, here we are. I researched and saw it now. What a big loss it would be. Very sad if that happens.

  49. D-Rok Says:

That pic of Belichick is priceless. He does, indeed, look homeless in that pic.

  50. mark2001 Says:

Mike should go nowhere. Would have been nice if we could have extended him last year, before he had a great season. Or maybe Baker with a two year incentive laden deal last year. But again like the higher draft pick, all water under the bridge.

  51. mark2001 Says:

In spite of all the “lower tax” and “paid in sunshine” stuff, it is obvious these guys all want to be paid. And frankly, if I was in their shoes, the number of years to get a huge contract are limited. And I don’t blame them.

  52. Oneilbuc Says:

David Pear. Again you are one of the biggest cheerleader for Baker Mayfield. And to talk trash like you do on a key board shows you ain’t nothing but a coward. Again I’ve never said Baker was trash he’s average at best and you ain’t winning a superbowl with a one read quarterback or less you have the 02 bucs defense. Which we don’t have and I don’t ever remember you being on here until Baker Mayfield came.

  53. Crickett Baker Says:

There is little sense in discussing Mayfield and Evans. They both seem determined to hit FA and I don’t blame them one bit. Baker seems to have more than money to convince him to stay, but we don’t know how much his family stole from him. Mike has never tested free agency and he probably feels that he should do it this late in his career. I strongly believe that they will both wait out the contract signing.

  54. ^^mtn^^ Says:

I’m sure ME isn’t taking it personally.

And Bucs were wise not to commit to him at beginning of season due to absorbing so much cap, waiting to see how certain players panned out like Bake, Devin & ME too as he hit his 30s.

Just too many unknowns having so much cap hit in Brady, Shaq & Jensen.

Still, don’t count NE out (per Bake’s agent 😉 )

  55. Itzok Says:

Patriots will be a sub 500 team for the next 20 years. Nobody wants to play there. No coach no qb. . No receivers. Only way a free agent goes there is to cash in

  56. Bucblind Says:

Ol’ onei is a tough one, but I do agree with him saying Baker is one of the top 10 qbs today. It’s interesting that you say Baker is a one read qb but the superbowl winning coach Kyle Shanahan says the complete opposite about Baker. Mmm I wonder who knows what they are talking about?
