Raheem Morris Talks Baker Mayfield
February 25th, 2024Joe sat in the beer-stained recliner today at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters and fired up the introductory news conference of former Bucs head coach Raheem Morris (2009-2011) being named head coach of the Atlanta Falcons a few weeks ago.
Raheem was all smiles and looking and sounding way more polished than he was 15 years ago when he took over the Bucs job.
Joe remembers Morris’ introductory news conference in Tampa. Multiple times he said the Bucs would “stay the course.” Meanwhile, it made no sense. The team was in the process of gutting the roster, including its starting quarterback and iconic veterans, while Team Glazer was committed to not investing in players.
Unfortunately for Raheem, Team Glazer started spending immediately after he got fired and never stopped.
Raheem, of course, talked all things Falcons with Atlanta media and the subject of his new offensive coordinator came up. That would be former Rams quarterbacks coach Zac Robinson, a guy who coached Baker Mayfield in Los Angeles late in the 2022 season.
Raheem said those two were such a sweet duo that the Rams posted “Ws” as legitimate underdogs.
“We add Baker Mayfield midway. He gets it going. We won some games that we probably shouldn’t have even won because of the ability of those guys to be able to connect,” Raheem said of Mayfield and Robinson.
Mayfield officially was 1-3 as a Rams starter, but he was really 2-3. He didn’t start his first Rams game but was under center from the second series early in the first quarter.
Is that a tipoff that the Falcons are interested in Mayfield if the Bucs allow him to hit the market in 2 1/2 weeks?
Many times in the news conference Falcons officials were asked about the quarterback position (the Falcons don’t have one) and their vague answers were a whole lot of tap dancing.
February 25th, 2024 at 4:14 pm
Of course it is. It’s legal tampering.
Hey if Mayfield wants to go play for that loser, have at it. He was ridiculously unprepared to be a HC.
“Ridiculously unprepared” coaches don’t have 10-win seasons in strong divisions with a ton of young players. Call him an immature head coach, sure. But the guy was prepared. It wasn’t luck what happened in 2010–Joe One of the worst decisions the Glazers ever made. He may be a little older, but he still can’t coach.
February 25th, 2024 at 4:17 pm
Agreed ^^^
February 25th, 2024 at 4:21 pm
They are absolutely after Mayfield. I hope he doesn’t want to go there and the Bucs can sign him. It would suck playing him twice a year with Kyle Trask or some rookie Qb as our starting Qb
February 25th, 2024 at 4:46 pm
“We add Baker Mayfield midway. He gets it going. We won some games that we probably shouldn’t have even won because of the ability of those guys to be able to connect,” Raheem said of Mayfield and Robinson.”
Jiminy. I got to admit I always thought the Rams were good for Baker . I knew they liked him and it worked out alright . I had no idea they were that in love
Yikes. Atlanta sure sounds like a competitor for Baker’s skills. at number 8 the top three Qbs will be gone so being able to get a guy you really like and use the #8 for something else would be good for them.
February 25th, 2024 at 4:55 pm
Hey Joe…… 1-3 is 1-3 no matter how much you think or look at it
February 25th, 2024 at 5:01 pm
Rams won 5 the entire year—TWO of those were Baker playing nearly all of both games
February 25th, 2024 at 5:03 pm
There was tons of luck in involved in that 10 win season. There is luck in involved in any successful season. They had their fair share. Raheem is a super bright guy and always has been but he wasn’t ready for that opportunity. I imagine he is now though and that’s bad for us.

Only to haters. Everyone else livng in a rational world realizes the QB that Played just a few minutes into a game to the game winning drive
is the one who won the game.
February 25th, 2024 at 5:19 pm
I agree that he was unprepared to be a head coach. You can’t say “but buy but 10-6” without also including10 straight losses. Being prepared includes pulling out of a nosedive. He didn’t do that. Also, the stories of the lack of discipline with his players indicated he wasn’t prepared to be tough when needed. He’s obviously a talented coach, but he was extremely green when he got to the HC position in Tampa. I mean, he had just been named DC for the first time before Gruden was canned. In over his head and his 2 coordinators flamed out before they got through the first season.
He’s undoubtedly prepared this time around.
February 25th, 2024 at 5:20 pm
Youngry.
February 25th, 2024 at 5:22 pm
Like you Joe, I think that Atlanta will probably make a play for Baker Mayfield because QB is their biggest need. They actually have less salary CAP space ($42 mil) than we do, however, unlike us, they’ve only got 1 or 2 UFAs that they really need to re-sign this year. I could see them (1) signing Baker; (2) trading for someone like Justin Fields; or (3) moving up to draft one of the Top-3 QBs (they currently draft #8).
February 25th, 2024 at 5:24 pm
CBS Sports is reporting that the Bucs will now throw a Brinks truck at Mike Evans to re-sign him.
February 25th, 2024 at 5:26 pm
“Mike Evans has long said that he wants to finish his career in Tampa, and it looks like he might get his wish. The Buccaneers are working to retain Evans, who is slated to enter free agency next month, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.”
February 25th, 2024 at 5:27 pm
Take away that horrible OPI call on K2 and the Bucs go 11-5, make the playoffs, and then….who knows what happens ? That said, I would like to know exactly what happened in London that caused Morris to lose the team and for them to do a complete 180 in an instant.
February 25th, 2024 at 5:28 pm
If rah is still youngry he needs to hire a Baker!!!!
February 25th, 2024 at 5:34 pm
Really liked Raheem. Management pretty much threw him to the wolves and the threw him out. My guess is he’d love to trash the Bucs. At least drive his price up to soak up as much of our cap as he can.
February 25th, 2024 at 5:56 pm
I think there’s a chance JJ McCarthy continues to rise up draft boards and could be in play for Atl at 8
February 25th, 2024 at 6:09 pm
Hey Marks….. Don’t try to label me a hater. I’m just a realist. Not one time has BM had two complete seasons as a “so called good QB”. I’ve already stated in another thread, that I’d be happy to eat crow if I’m wrong. But 1-3 is exactly 1-3 no matter how many times you look at it. I see you talking smack about the ME fans and them being delusional and such. You sir are the same about your mancrush BM. If BM is the QB this coming season, I will pull for him as I did many, and I mean many QBs before him. I just don’t see BM as the future as he has Only put together two good seasons out of six. You can talk all you want, but he has to prove it this year if he is on “OUR” team
February 25th, 2024 at 6:09 pm
so he`s going to screw up the remaining nfc south teams go figure
February 25th, 2024 at 6:12 pm
@FrontFour,
This is not smoke and mirrors, the Falcons would jump on Mayfield if we allowed it. They saw his production the whole year and Raheem and Zac have experience with him. This is not a ploy to drive up his salary. Baker wants to stay and he understands that we need to play within the numbers to retain our veterans and lock up some FAs and draft picks.
The last thing Baker, and indirectly his wife, want is to go to another city and be labelled a journeyman QB with no roots. We also have better talent around him than Atlanta does if we get some of our pieces back.
February 25th, 2024 at 6:14 pm
@NCBuc,
1-3 as a STARTER. Who cares? He still won the game he didn’t start and that was a game he took over in the second series of the 1st Quarter.
What are you babbling about? He literally jumped on a team and played the same week.
February 25th, 2024 at 6:16 pm
@NCBuc,
And he didn’t even have his star WR in Cooper Kupp. I think the guy did well given those circumstances and helped take our team to the playoffs. If he was that bad, he alone could have wrecked this season.
February 25th, 2024 at 6:20 pm
They can’t lose… they buy a QB or drive the price up for the team ahead of them
February 25th, 2024 at 6:46 pm
Atlanta can take a QB in this years draft and pay him under his rookie deal for 5 years. The QB salaries are crazy right now with a D Jones making 40 million. Mayfield may get an offer of 33 million a year from another team. If he doesn’t sign before the draft his market goes way down. I think the Bucs can sign him for 3 years 100 million. If not they should look at the draft or trade for Justin Fields and let Mayfield walk. The Bucs have too many holes to tie a lot of the teams salary cap on QB who had one good year and a if they didn’t sneak a a win against the Panthers. Mayfield would be lucky to get 15 million a year.
February 25th, 2024 at 6:46 pm
Atlanta is not the mayfield problem. The problem is Sean peyton with all that Denver Walmart money. The Bucs may get pushed into having to franchise mayfield this year just to get that highly impatient Sean Peyton off mayfield for a year and force him to poach elsewhere. Thats the problem as I see it.
Few here realize mayfield is a Drew Bree’s clone. Sean Peyton however sees it all to clearly. I believe licht understands all of this too.
February 25th, 2024 at 6:49 pm
Atlanta is in a great position. O Line that put Falcons @ 7 th in Rushing and only QB mistakes took them out of contention. Doubt they will spend big on a QB but will bring a proven back up a little better than Heineke. Atlanta will go big on defense this off season. Way too early for Morris to inform the press that Ridder could be their guy in 2024.
Bucs don’t get better up front and move up in the rushing department they could be looking at 3rd in the Division even if they sign all their FA’s to fat deals.

February 25th, 2024 at 7:40 pm
Atlanta would be very attractive to Baker. Better o-line, better run game, better TE, then pick up Nabers or Odunze with the 8th pick and that would be a team take very seriously.
Don’t play around and low ball him, strike a fair deal and get it done.
February 25th, 2024 at 7:55 pm
Does Raheem Morris talk Raheem Morris? Maybe he should discuss how he was never much of a head coach.
February 25th, 2024 at 8:04 pm
One things wrong here: Baker don’t need to prove anything, especially to NC BUC! 🤣 Baker, Goff, Love all played great this year. Dak and Jackson(the folds in playoffs twins ) need to prove something. Baker’s about to get paid because anyone that breaks down film knows and is proclaiming that Baker’s SKILLED and because only Mahombs matched him with 6 touchdowns and he needed 2 more games to do it. Baker also threw for 300 plus yards in both playof games and has been in every playoff appearance playing great(4). Getting to the playoffs is hard enough, knowing your QB is going to play well when you get there is PRICELESS…or worth at least 35 mil/year! 😎

Thats why you ARE a hater. YOu just go off hate and not facts
2018 Good Qb and won rookie of the year
2020 near identical year to this year and good play off run.
2023 by all accounts good year 4,000 yards plus and low ints and a decent playoff run.
Thats THREE – learn to count?
How will you eat your crow? WHen you adjust for games played ( he played 14 his rookie season and the league was 16 games with the browns) this year was no fluke.
2019 he had the yardage but threw his record for ints. He’s never come close to that in his career since.
SO when healthy he in fact has had ONE season as not a good QB
I’ll probably have to save the numbers in a text and copy and past every few days for those of you who keep repeating the same nonsense every week.
February 25th, 2024 at 8:18 pm
The key to Baker is don,t try to change him and just let him be himself. The Rams in typical LA culture just let people be. Most NFL coaches are too controlling to do that.
February 25th, 2024 at 8:23 pm
Mayfield is a better runner than Drew Brees.
February 25th, 2024 at 8:32 pm
When all you haters look a Baker’s past performance you neglect to admit they all have been SH!T teams that he made better including Bucs 2023. All were projected to be losers or due to injuries turned out to be losers. So if he ever lands on a team that has stability he will win and win in playoff games also.
Bucs 2023 were projected to win maybe 5 games, so don’t come at me saying they were a playoff contender.
February 25th, 2024 at 8:49 pm
@BakerFan sh!t teams? You mean the Bucs who made the playoffs for the past 3 years, won their division in the last two years, and won a Super Bowl 3 years ago? And the rams were the defending Super Bowl champs when baker Mayfield’s sorry as played for them. The only garbage team baker mayfield made better was the browns and that was only because they had a great defense, best running game, and elite WR duo so all baker mayfield sorry as had to do was to not throw interceptions

Jack Clark Says: “The only garbage team baker mayfield made better was the browns and that was only because they had a great defense, best running game, and elite WR duo so all baker mayfield sorry as had to do was to not throw interceptions.”
Did that great D magically appear when Baker played? They weren’t world beaters the previous 2 seasons, winning exactly 1 game. They didn’t win either of there first two games his rookie season. They were trailing 10-0 when he made his debut late in Q2 of their 3rd game. Is that when the D became great?
It is also interesting that you knock Baker because the Browns had the ‘best running game’, yet you give him no credit for the fact that the Bucs finished DEAD LAST in rushing this past season! Why is that?
And yes, the Rams were SB champs, riddle with injuries, including Stafford and Cupp, with a record of 3-9 when Baker arrived. In the five games Baker played, they were 2-3. Yes I am counting the game VS LV as a Baker win given no other Rams QB threw a pass. And as long as we are being real here, in the 9 games Stafford played, they were 3-9. Mayfield had the best winning % of any QB for the Rams.
February 25th, 2024 at 9:10 pm
@TonyMarks even Joe had to step in to prove we were not a sh!t team before baker mayfield sorry as started playing for us 😆
February 25th, 2024 at 9:25 pm
@critmark the browns defense has always been good if not great for a long time, even before and after baker mayfield sorry as played for them. And if you’re only losing because the score is 10-0 then that means your defense is playing great. Baker Mayfield and Tom Brady do not deserve any credit or blame for our running game being the worst in the league for the second straight year because that’s our run blocking and offensive coordinators fault. And baker mayfield still had a losing record 2-3 when he played for the rams 😆 because baker mayfield is average at best

Hold the phone!
I well remember that season, because it was the easiest season he’d had in a very long time…much like this past season was an easy schedule.
Raheem was a horrible head coach. HE was more concerned with being buddies with players than leading them. I ushered in a huge discipline issue with the team.

Unfortunately, at present, Baker Mayfield is not a great QB.
However, he did show potential this past season.
People need to stop acting like he’s already there. It’s simply not the case, and there is no guarantee he will ever get there.
So, honestly, I’m wanting to keep him at a reasonable cost…but I’m also willing to let him walk if he costs too much.
Russell Wilson is going to be released (if he isn’t already) and he is willing to play at league minimum to get his HoF career back on track.
That’s an amazing deal, and he is at minimum as good as Mayfield…and possibly much better…especially with a good team around him.

February 26th, 2024 at 12:01 am
I’m pretty sure the Rams were about all injured out as a team when Baker came on board. Just sit back and watch. Baker has NEVER played on a good team as a Mahomes. Baker kicked Mahomes butt twice in college. He had him beat in 2020 until the refs had the worst no call of all time. He has been running for his life his whole career, thus the injuries he’s suffered. If he is on just a decent team he will take them to a superbowl. It is inevitable. He played 4 games with a broken shoulder and a completely torn labrum. You can’t hold a guy like that back forever. Just remember Brady went 8-9. The next year Baker went 9-8. If he stays it will happen with the Bucs. If he doesn’t stay it will happen where ever he lands. Too much talent, you haters will be shut up, mark it down.
February 26th, 2024 at 12:04 am
Mark it down
February 26th, 2024 at 12:12 am
No Bonzai, he didn’t take a 0-16 team to 11-5. And to their first playoff in 20 years. Yeah you’re right that’s not a fact. Delusional at best. Son….
February 26th, 2024 at 12:16 am
The previous 3 years before Baker showed up Cleveland went 4-44. They SUCKED for years. Taking a team like that to 11-5 is a miracle. And who did that?? Oh yeah his name is Baker Mayfield. Lmao
February 26th, 2024 at 12:27 am
Jack Clark Says: “Baker Mayfield and Tom Brady do not deserve any credit or blame for our running game being the worst in the league for the second straight year because that’s our run blocking and offensive coordinators fault.”
First, nobody said the QB was to blame for a bad run game. That said, how about a little consistency here. You specifically discounted Baker’s efforts in Cleveland due to a great running game, yet two Bucs QBs who can overcome a lousy run game get no credit. Pick a lane.
And if the O-Line is so bad and the OC is similarly bad, why don’t the Buc’s QBs get credit for overcoming that?
And finally, yes he did have a losing record. But still better than Stafford when he had his WR1 Kupp, WR2 Robinson, and All World DL Arron Donald. Baker had NO WR1, NO WR2, and NO Donald. I think he did damn well given what he had to work with. So did Sean McVay by the way!
February 26th, 2024 at 12:30 am
Capitalizing “DID NOT” doesn’t really make it true, now does it??
February 26th, 2024 at 1:06 am
Be nice if they lock baker and Mike down this week. With the cap being raised, baker may get the 4 year “ he’s our guy” deal. I’d like to see dak reset the market first. If dak gets mid 50 mil, baker a shoe in for “ Daniel jones, plus” money.
February 26th, 2024 at 1:12 am
The problem with the post Gruden Raheehaw regime wasn’t really the head coach. It was a person who must be a nice guy, great guy for advice on how you should manage your personal lawn care, but absolutely the most disastrous overhyped General Manager in the history of Sport.
28-52.
Mork Dumbdadink.
February 26th, 2024 at 1:38 am
Yes it would, the second year with Evans & Baker together would be so much fun to watch. If the running game improved the Bucs could go deeper into the playoffs.
February 26th, 2024 at 1:59 am
Todd had a winning regular season in 2023, by the hair on his chinny chin chin.
Regression to the mean in 2024 especially without Evans, Baker and Toine.
February 26th, 2024 at 3:25 am
Yup, the Falcons are absolutely wanting Mayfield.
Im hoping that w sign Evans, then Mayfield will want badly to come back.
Especially if we promise to build an O-line that can run block.
As for the Haters. They started their stupidity in training camp.
Thru Mayfield winning the NFC south. Two rounds of the playoffs. All pro,
Their stupudity at this point is comical. I wont address them anymore.
Why waste time on the chronically ignorant and hateful.
I sorta feel bad for them. How bad must their lives be?
But Fortunately, I dont think it will be an issue much longer.
When the Bucs sign Mayfield for 6 years, 240 million,
Most of their Hearts will give out.
That huge Mayfield contract is just around the corner boys!
And all your hatred cant stop it!
Mayfield will be the Bucs QB for 4 years and Beyond.
Might as well move on to another team!
February 26th, 2024 at 7:35 am
Going out and partying with the players will likely be removed from Coach Morris’ weekly prep list.
February 26th, 2024 at 9:46 am
With the eighth pick, it’s hard to imagine the Falcons wouldn’t go for a quarterback there or even trade up for one.
Why pay a veteran 36M / year, when you can use that money to build up everything else on the team?
February 26th, 2024 at 10:35 am
I guess because he took you to two rounds of the playoffs when EVERYBODY said you would only win 4 games…
February 26th, 2024 at 10:58 am
They are thinking, if we went within 1 game of the superbowl with Baker in his first year what will happen in his second year? Especially if we give him a running game?? Curiosity, is why pay Baker good money.
February 26th, 2024 at 11:10 am
People on here have a big problem of reading comprehension, even the Joe. How many games were the Bucs projected to win in 2023? 4 or 5 I call that a Sh!t team even if the year before had a losing record and being destroyed in playoffs. Brady ran from the stench and retired. Rams were destroyed by injuries making what was being thrown out to play on any given Sunday a sh!t team. Panthers, is anyone going to debate that they are not one also. Then Cleveland, come on, are you serious thinking mayfield did not raise them out of the bottom of the toilet.
There you have it. Truth hurts, you haters and the ones who lack reading comprehension abilities
February 26th, 2024 at 11:49 am
They were 2-3 with Baker. 3-7 with Stafford. The o-line was a disaster due to injuries. I believe when they picked Mayfield up they had 2 street free agents starting, Cooper and Robinson on IR. So, he did a great job for them. Flip side, Raheem took a beat up defense and kept them in games they had no business to be competitive in. The “Mayfield Miracle” on Thursday night doesn’t happen if Raheem’s boys don’t get a crucial stop. He’s a damn good coach

Yes, yes trade the all Pro qb that took you to one game from the superbowl!!! Yes he only beat all the other all Pro qbs in the “prescion” passing contest!!! They were only the best of the best qbs. He only had a better record 9-8 a year later than the best qb in history had with an 8-9 record!! That would be the greatest call of all time. Why aren’t the Bucs paying YOU to make all the important decisions for them??

Atlanta should trade for Justin Fields

Ugh, I’d hate that, I’d much rather they overpay for Baker and the Bucs trade for Fields.
Baker just had his ‘career year’ and it was very middling. He’s almost certainly going to regress, which would mean at best he’s Derek Carr, and likely will be worse that that.
If the Bucs can get Atlanta and New Orleans with terrible QB contracts, and the Panthers can’t get Young some WRs, then the Bucs will be in a great position to win the division again next year.

If you don’t care to go to another superbowl, then by all means push with all your might to get rid of Baker. But if you have a dream to go again, you better fight with all your might to keep him in Tampa Bay as a Buccaneer. Because Baker is destined to win a superbowl. He had Mahomes and Andy Reid, possibly the next Brady & Belichek, on the ropes in 2020 and if not for one of the worst no calls by the refs in the NFL’s history which cost Cleveland 7 points and the game it could have been Cleveland going to the superbowl that year. Don’t forget, it was KC who won the superbowl that year and it was Baker Mayfield that took the Browns who were 0-16 the year before he showed up to that playoff game which they really won, yeah. It is just a matter of time before a really good coach puts all the pieces together around Baker and the rest, WILL BE HISTORY!!! It is going to be a blast watching the haters and the “experts”, who were ALL saying Mayfield is done, he will NEVER be a starting quarterback in the NFL again, trying to dig their way out of the holes they dug when it does happen and oh it will happen.😉
