Rich Eisen Believes Baker Mayfield Returns To Bucs
February 22nd, 2024The voice of NFL Network has spoken.
Rich Eisen, who has been the voice (and the face — until Kay Adams arrived) of NFL Network since its inception, has encouraging words for Bucs fans.
On his weekday talk show, “The Rich Eisen Show,” Eisen decided to have an offseason top-10 quarterback list. This list was made up of the top-10 quarterbacks who will shape the NFL this season, and for years if not decades to come.
At No. 8 on his list is Baker Mayfield.
“I think he is going to stay put,” Eisen said. “I think the Bucs saw what they could get out of my boy. And I think my boy has shown what they can get out of him.
“And I think my boy stays.”
Eisen’s “boy” is Mayfield.
However, Eisen said there is a potential fly in the ointment. He thinks the Raiders might try to swoop in and grab him.
Eisen said that if Mike Evans doesn’t return, all bets on Mayfield’s return are off.
“Unless, Mike Evans goes,” Eisen said of Mayfield’s return to the Bucs. “And he’s sitting there going, ‘What the hell?'”
While Eisen makes a whole bunch of sense, Joe thinks the Bucs really tipped their hands by asking Mayfield for input in choosing Liam Coen to replace Dave Canales at offensive coordinator.
If the Bucs weren’t planning on keeping Mayfield or didn’t think they had enough Team Glazer loot, why go through the effort of consulting with Mayfield on hiring Coen?
Eisen’s next quarterback on his most influential list is J.J. McCarthy of Michigan. Eisen went to school there, so of course he crowed about how McCarthy is such a winner and as a result is a top-10 pick.
Yeah? Well, guess who else were winners in college? Try Jay Barker and Craig Krenzel. How’d those guys do in the NFL? Hell, if winning in college is all it took, Tim Tebow and Chris Weinke would be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame by now.

Joe … ‘This list was made up of the top-10 quarterbacks who will shape the NFL this season, and for years if not decades to come.’
Rich Eisen listed the following QBs in his Top-10:
[Ssshhh. Don’t give it away man. 🙂 — Joe]
His list included 5 free agent QBs and 5 rookies. His list obviously assumes that those were the top QBs available this year. Can’t figure out though why Eisen has Baker listed at #8 QB available, yet QBs like McCarthy, Fields & Wilson listed above him.

Why did Tom Brady win a Super Bowl for us in 2020?
Because he had all day to pass the ball.
We had the best offensive in Bucs history. Easily.
Donovan Smith.
Marpet.
Jensen.
Cappa.
Wirfs.
One of the best offensive lines in NFL history.
No joke.
Brady felt safe on every snap. He was scared on every snap in 2022.
We have had one of the worst offensive lines and rushing attacks in NFL history the last two years.
If we give Mayfield and White a great offensive line, we can compete for the NFC.
Another season with Hainsey? We are screwed.
1st round- generational center
2nd round- generational left guard
Period!

I am hoping Eisen is correct.

Well said, Teacherman777.
Plus, Brady also tried to play by the seconds rules as previously under Belichick in passing the ball.

IMHO, Mayfield is back whether ME is or not.
Mayfield may want ME back but he’ll sign here even if Mike goes.
They are NOT a package deal.

teacherman777 is on point ^^^
secure the OL…baker was getting knocked around pretty good back there last season…
think how long tommy b would have held up to all those hits baker took…
now that baker is going to be the guy, protect him so he can be productive – don’t let him be a human pinball

“if winning in college is all it took, Tim Tebow and Chris Weinke would be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame by now.” Well said Joe!

i’m hearing a lot of teams about me13, but no talk about the jets or cowboys…
i think either of them can slink in…
if rodgers wants mike, they will make a push for him in new york…
if jerry wants him in dallas, they will dump gallop and toss mike the bag, and pair him up with cd lamb…
imagine mike with the star on his helmet…somehow i can see it…
bengals might want to swap him into tee higgins spot…
i don’t see him going to houston…
now that there’s heavy film on stroud, he could instantly take that 2nd year step back type thing, that often happens in the nfl

There are people who comment on this site that think almost beating Alabama one time puts you in the HOF.

Insane to invest hundreds of millions in a QB and them let him get mauled because O line is substandard. Jared Goff had time enough to have soup and sandwich in Detroit pocket. Brady became the GOAT because he always had a solid line. Sign Mayfiled and solidify the line. Those things are the most important priorities.
February 22nd, 2024 at 7:49 am
You guys forget Brady went through his progressions quickly and got rid of the ball. Mayfield holds on to it making it seem like the line is worse than it actually is. Brady’s numbers were very close to Mayfield’s only 600 more yards for Brady and he was not nearly as mobile as Mayfield. Leftwich was considered atrocious and out the league and Canales was promoted to a HC position. That’s with 6 hundred less yards funny how the glass is viewed.

It would kill me to see Mike wearing the star but he might be what it takes for them to finally get over…..Nah, Dak still sucks in the playoffs. Come home ME13,come home. Go Bucs!!!
February 22nd, 2024 at 9:17 am
@Since76 – if you watch the All-22, you can actually see Mayfield going through his progressions WHEN there is not a D-lineman in his face in under 2 seconds. Unfortunately, that wasn’t very often. Most visible culprit was Hainsey, who literally looked like he was on roller skates, getting pushed back into Mayfield’s face. Sometimes an edge rusher, though he ducked under a lot of those and made a play anyway.
But the few times he DID NOT have a guy in his face, he’s definitely following the progressions… you can see him look left, then center, then right.
Did he hold the ball too long – yes, on occasion. The difference between him and Brady was 2 things… 1) he thought he could escape and make a play (and sometimes he did) and 2) he would not throw the ball away when there was no one open. Brady dumped the ball in the dirt after 2.7 seconds, always.
February 22nd, 2024 at 9:19 am
Since76,
Wow…Progressions? You really sound like you know what you are talking about. Here is the truth. Brady threw the ball 200 more times in 2022 than Mayfield in 2023. Most of Brady’s passes were of the 10 yard variety or less. He wasn’t going through “progressions”, he was always going to throw short because that is what 45 year old QB’s do. Not faulting Brady but you aren’t making a valid comparison. Mayfield always looking for deeper seam or deeper out pass which always involves a safety over the top. Those passes by definition require more time. Mayfield outstanding shifting from one receiver to the next. He may be guilty of relying too much on his very strong arm which sometimes leads to holding the ball longer than he should. There were times last year where he should have just thrown the ball away instead of taking the sack.

“Hey you! Yeah you, the dead horse! Get over here. It’s time for your beating!”
February 22nd, 2024 at 11:21 am
Funny though, Mayfield would be a perfect fit for the Raiders of my youth. I personally believe they asked for Baker’s input, not wholly because they value his opinion, but at least in part to flatter him. That’s good business practice right there.
February 22nd, 2024 at 12:13 pm
So now all we need is to luck into GENERATIONAL TALENT in the 1st 2 rounds IF we keep Baker and Mike.
Don’t you think if it was that easy, said players would both go in the Top 10?
I agree with needing a C and LG, but Generational?
This is a stretch!!!!
February 22nd, 2024 at 1:23 pm
McCarthy is a hybrid of Trask and Glennon.
February 22nd, 2024 at 1:57 pm
So there you have it, Baker will be coming back. Let’s move on to some draft articles?
February 22nd, 2024 at 2:58 pm
The combine and free agency come first. Combine is next week and yes, Joe will be there. Joe will have plenty of repetitive articles about the draft once free agency dies down in late March (and around that time, OTAs begin!).
Draft coverage is getting really close to romance novels and college recruiting stories. Exact same thing over and over and over, only the names, dates and locations change.
February 22nd, 2024 at 3:12 pm
Joe should put a tail on Licht at the combine, and find out what other GM’s and agents he’s meeting with! Maybe Licht will trade one of our CB’s like the rumors say?

I used to believe in Santa Claus until I found out there is no jolly old fellow giving away loads of things for free, and no matter what “ wants” you put on the wish list , you’re going to have to pay for ,and if you don’t have the money you’re not going to get it , so , if your money is limited , you better stick to “needs “ or you’ll really end up in a fix.
February 22nd, 2024 at 4:56 pm
Just mix it up a bit Joe.
