Surprising Baker Mayfield Stat

February 13th, 2024

More clutch than NFL MVP.

Yes, Joe understands there is a sect of football fans that counts wins for or against a quarterback.

Some quarterbacks have insanely good numbers but play on teams with trash defenses or without great weapons. So in the end, the losing drags down the quarterback stats.

That is if you believe in quarterback wins.

Pro-Football-Reference.com records quarterback wins as a stat, even though Joe doesn’t pay it much mind. A bad roster or a terrible offensive coordinator can drag down the very best. Just look at Tom Brady’s final year in New England and his final year in Tampa Bay.

But here is something that Joe finds cool. Lamar Jackson is one of the best quarterbacks in the league. He’s fun as hell to watch. And he arguably quarterbacked the best (regular season) team in the NFL this past season.

Hell, Jackson is the 2023 MVP for a reason.

But, the soon-to-be repeat Super Bowl champs, the Chiefs, punked Jackson and the Crows in the playoffs.

Joe understands people rail about Jackson’s p!ss poor postseason record. It’s bad. Still, folks widely consider Jackson to be one of the best signal-callers in the game. Deservedly so.

So Joe did a wee bit of research this morning. Would you believe Bucs free agent quarterback Baker Mayfield has a better postseason record than Jackson?

Mayfield, in four starts in the playoffs, is 2-2. Jackson? He is 2-5 in the playoffs. That’s a .286 winning percentage in the postseason.

No one with a sober mind would suggest Mayfield is a better quarterback. But when the chips are down in the playoffs, Mayfield is more clutch than his more famous AFC counterpart.

Uh, no. 2-5 is a .286 winning percentage.

    vs

    112/195 57.4% 6.8 YPA 6 TD 6 INT

But Lamar has 500 rushing yards to 45 for Baker. Still – only 3 rushing TD’s so even including those he has less TD’s in Baker in 2 more games played.

    I’m a Baker believer lol

How many Super Bowl both “won”… never mind wins doesn’t matter. If you’re good, then your skills will over shadow your weakness. Brady did lose with both Bowles and Leftwich. Yet, Brady won the Superbowl withered same two guys on the staff. Baker is no where near Brady’s level. Please stop comparing the two. It’s embarrassing.

  8. BakerFan Says:

Being able to just watch a couple of games of the Ravens, I came away thinking he does not have much touch on his passes, especially on the long throws. Just my opinion I am sure that people who watch him week in and week out can give a better assessment.

I can’t believe people just pretend like Mayfield didn’t choke at the end of the Lions games. The coaches got him in a position, with the game on the line, to have the ball in his hands with 2 minutes left – and he literally threw a BAD interception 2 plays later.

How in the world are people ever mentioning clutch and Mayfield in the same sentence, unless it’s to talk about how he isn’t clutch.

You Baker Bois all year compared him to Brady and Mahomes. But when it mattered most, Baker was Vinny Testaverde.

Ravens had the best running game in the league last year. Bucs had the worst.

Does anyone on this blog think that has any determination on how well a QB can perform?

BUT – he had the ball in his hands with 1:45 left in the 4th QTR – he drops back – gets pressure from the middle – throws a horrible pass – interception – game over.

How does Pat Mahomes do in this situation? Tom Brady? A. Rodgers?

This is really how fans judge NFL QBs…

Again – Baker is an OK NFL QB. But he had a chance to be a hero and he sh!t the bed.

I would like to see what the film room says on that pass. Did Otten run the correct route, should of he stopped a few yards short of where he stopped, did he drift away from the pass? These are things that the average fan is not exposed too. Neither Mayfield or Otten will throw the other one under the bus, so we are left with bad throw. Which if it was, it is what it is.

i guess you missed the “bad” interceptions that mahomes, rodgers, brady, etc. have thrown with the game on the line. it happens to the best of them. baker’s td:interception ratio was 3:1 in the playoffs. he had as many tds in two games as mahomes did in 4.

in the lions game baker had 3 tds and 343 yards. he literally set an nfl record.

  19. BakerFan Says:

Marine Buc…. I just went and watched that interception again. There is definitely something wrong with the pass routes on that play. Otton and Godwin were 2 yards from each other. I would also say Mayfield should of not thrown it. He was under pressure on that play, but if he held it any longer for Godwin and Otton to clear each other it would of been a sack.

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

“How does Pat Mahomes do in this situation? Tom Brady? A. Rodgers?“

do you think that those three have never thrown a bad interception that ended what would have been a game winning drive? and no im not saying baker is better than mahomes or brady. mahomes is the #1 qb in the nfl, brady was #1 for close to 20 years. but even the #1 qb makes mistakes. mahomes had 3 interceptions in one game just last season.

  23. Defense Rules Says:

Anyone who wants a lesson in how to build a team in today’s restrictive salary CAP environment should take a look at the 2023 Chiefs and how they built their team. Very different from how the Bucs (and most other teams) are dealing with the salary CAP.

The 2023 Chiefs had an Adjusted Salary CAP of $220.4 mil. They paid salaries of $194.8 mil; most of that went to 6 players who each had a CAP Hit of over $10 mil (Mahomes – $37.1 mil; Jones – $26.8 mil; Kelce – $14.7 mil; Thuney – $13.4 mil; Reid – $12.7 mil; Valdez-Scantling – $11.0 mil). Those 6 total to $115.7 mil, or 52% of their CAP. Everyone else made $5 mil or less.

What’s particularly interesting though is that they DIDN’T MORTGAGE THE FUTURE to compete for the Super Bowl. Chiefs only have ONE VOID YEAR contract (Chris Jones) on their books for 2024, 2025 & 2026. That’s it … ONE. What they do have is a bunch of FAs each of those years. Chiefs are obviously counting on Mahomes to bring in UFAs willing to ‘play cheap’ to compete for a title. Seems to be working (just like it worked for Brady?).

  24. Pops Malone Says:

I was at that Lions game. Could not hear myself think when the Bucs had the ball all game long. No excuses there for Baker. That was a bad pick late. We needed to be better on offense earlier in the game. Hoping that Coen’s experience calling plays will help and that he tries to put the ball in the hands of his best playmakers more than Canales did, (especially in crunch time). Was still a bad choice by Baker…

But the pick ended the game.

Baker will probably be back next season and I will continue to cheer for him… Hopefully the Bucs are smart and decide to upgrade their interior O-line and running back group. Fixing these two areas will help Baker be a better QB.

Who knows – if our IOL wasn’t so horrible maybe that pressure doesn’t come from the middle. Maybe he gets another split second to decide or is able to scramble…

    —-

They have all thrown ints silly and in playoff games.

Before that game Baker had thrown ONE Int in the playoffs (and we all know Evans butter fingered the first int in the Detroit game. It was right in his hands)

With under 2 minutes to go , one time out and deep in his own territory trying to make something happen he bet on fitting a tight one in and lost. That doesn’t mean intelligent non hater Buc fans must ignore his three TDs and the way he had the team always coming back until that point.

Besides Joe’s point was not on ints thrown but record of games. Now all of a sudden to suit yourselves – win loss doesn’t matter because it makes Lamar look worse than Baker in the playoffs …. smh.

This is how you know haters. No honest consistency. There’s not a person here reading this that doesn’t KNOW without a shadow of a doubt that if that was baker’s playoff win loss record you’d use it to roast him alive.

  33. heyjude Says:

Yes there was some talk about someone running the wrong route or too deep but that was one that Baker shouldn’t have thrown regardless which leaves it on him.

I tend to think its just a bad decision not a matter of feeling pressured but geesh that pass protection was total garbage almost the entire game so maybe he heard footsteps. Its been a loooooong time since I have seen a team where so many times defenders came in untouched.

    Canales totally sucked at adjusting.

  35. Marine Buc Says:

Yes – Pat Mahomes threw one INT in the Super Bowl – BUT – what did he do in OT when his team needed a few clutch plays?

This is why TB12 and Mahomes are the GOATS and Baker Mayfield is just a JAG.

    Mediocre.

  37. geno711 Says:

Baker had his best season ever last season.

I tend to think that next year, he will come back to his mean.

    Hope not.

I won’t hit Baker on his one horrible interception at the end of the game. But I will not over rate a guy who has been in the league for 6 seasons and just had his best season.

Now his average season is 24 TDs and 13 interceptions. Maybe he can be slightly better than that for the Bucs if we sign him for three years. But really does anyone expect him to be better than 28 TD and 10 interceptions with 4000 yards of last year. His career record is still under .500.

If we have him the next three years, I hope he leads us to multiple playoff wins each year. I think the fair expectation is to be closer to .500 with him and never a serious contender.

There is a reason he has been and was so available. He did not become a top tier QB after last season. Silly to act otherwise.

  41. Marky Mark Says:

Evans is a bit like Jackson, he tends to choke in the playoffs. Eagles..drops a sure TD on his palms. Perfect throw by Bakes. Lions..Lets a ball go through both his hands that turns into an int. A TD on that drive makes the final drive irrelevant.

Jack Jones of the Raiders said before the game, “It’s Patrick Mahomes we’ve got to stop. You stop the magician, then the act is over,”

    @ Tony

Let’s try this one last time…

Well in the spirit of fairness though you flopped I will return the favor and try one last time to raise your IQ. I know. Its like the title of a very popular Tom Cruise movie series but here goes.

Mahomes has EIGHT ints in the playoffs any and every interception is an issue in playoff Football.

Brady had FORTY at a rate of about .83 per play off game

Baker has 3 at rate of about .75 per game

    got it? Understand BASIC maths?

Let me help you as you struggle….. on ints the lower number is better!!

Furthermore Brady has lost MULTIPLE games in the playoffs because of his INTs. You lose (as usual).

Is that a comparison of how much better Baker is than The GOAT? Only to nitwits. Its saying that ints are not the deciding factor for saying rightfully a QB is not clutch because he threw one to end a game – even the verifiable GOAT did. Which is why Joe’s article is not about ints but play off records.

Do you understand the words coming out of my keyboard? (channeling my inner Christ tucker) 🙂

As for using Brady and Mahomes as the comparison marker that makes Baker average? Strange reasoning. All I can think is you thought t real hard to say something you thought would get under my skin and flopped on that as well by saying something thats been said at least a hundred times before and is unoriginal for haters.

Instead claiming that a Qb is average because they are not Brady or Mahomes – just makes you look more the nitwit.

Win win for me all around.

    BakerfFan,

There is no doubt that Otton was supposed to “sit down” in front of the zone linebackers on that last interception. Godwin was the deeper receiver but they both almost ran into each other. Baker did not expect the linebacker to be in front of Otton because the pass to Otton was supposed to be in front of the zone. RodMunch and the rest of the Hate Brigade know this if they look at the replay but that play was their last chance at vindication for being on the wrong side of the Mayfield story all season. The coaches know what really happened as do Otton and Mayfield but Baker has too much class to hang it on a teammate. On Chiefs last drive last night Kielce routinely stayed under the zone and gained big chunks on the final drive.

  54. Jack Clark Says:

You really have to cherry pick stats to compare Mayfield favorably against any great quarterback. Like choosing to compare Tom Brady’s stats last year to Baker Mayfield’s stats this year then saying the Buccaneers are better without Tom Brady. Lamar Jackson is a two time NFL MVP, something Baker Mayfield will never be because just like his playoff record (2-2 .500 win %) Baker Mayfield is average at best.

Everyone calls him an MVP QUARTERBACK but he was 15th in passing yards, 12th in touchdowns, and crapped his pants in the playoffs. In 6 years he averages only 2,648 passing yards per season and 185 passing yards per games played. He threw .95 Ints a game. That is 16 Ints a season.

He ended up with a 29 and 30 record with Cleveland.

Rarely, does a 1OA fall into your lap like this.

He played for some bad teams. TWO playoff wins with the Browns and Bucs is impressive. Need a QB.

Hopefully JL can sign everyone but Baker isn’t going anywhere

  73. Dave Pear Says:

All the Baker haters are obviously all genius future football executives. Jason Licht needs you all now.

    Tony marks Says:

He passed for 236 yards per game. That comes out to 4000 yards in a season if playing all 17 games.
    ————

Thats darn tootin good since that includes a rookie season and one season playing injured

tell you imaginary friend he needs better friends – maybe one who can read stats on league leaders and see what company 4,000 yards puts you at even when injured and rookie stats included.

“He ended up with a 29 and 30 record with Cleveland.”

amzingly good stat!! You don’t know do you? The two seasons before Baker the browns were 1-32.

Get a calculator and figure out how much better 29 -30 is than 1-31

  75. Brandon Says:

Brady is the GOAT. No way the GOAT throws THREE 2nd half INTs in the NFC Championship Game against the Packers… except he did. No way he forgets what down it was against the Bears … but he did. No way he audibled to smoke screens and checked down prematurely for the first three quarters every week in 2022 and went 8-10… but he did.

You got a lot of cavaets for him.
You don’t want to count his 2022 season.
You want to count other seasons that he did not even play in.
You apparently do not want to count his rookie season fully.
You apparently think that no other quarterback in the NFL is playing injured.

    What else.
Let’s get the full list of things that don’t count or count for less.

    All the seasons count.

    They count for Jameis Winston.
    They count for Baker Mayfield.
    They count for Joe Burrow
    They count for CJ Stroud.
    They count for Bryce Young.
    They count for Trevor Lawrence.
    They count for Zack Wilson.

We see which guys have it.
Baker Mayfields career is closer to Jameis Winston the Joe Burrow or CJ Stroud.

    What other excuses.
    Asking for a friend.

  78. Jack Clark Says:

@Tony Marks so by your own standards baker mayfield is trash because he can’t even make it to the AFC championship, win NFL MVP, or lead the best record in the NFL 😂

LOl….Your claims of Baker median have been thoroughly debunked because you didn’t do your homework. No need to feel bad most nitwits haters don’t.

Lie eI said 4,000 yards average is fine .It just gravy that it included his injured year and his rookie season.

Go learn some Nfl and try getting a real friend – imaginary ones don’t count.

I never stated a single one of those as my standard. Know nothing haters like yourself always join the rank of Roddy boy with the growing noses like Pinocchio.

Now go sit in the corner because nothing you say is going to stop baker from making around 30 million this year and most likely right there in tampa

You were wrong all season so whats new?

  81. big jim Says:

looks like big jim was the only one to call it correct. big jim before pre-season called 4000 plus yards, 30 td’s and 10 int’s, once again big jim was correct. but, hey it was easy, baker is the best faker,. I wouldn’t count him out

  82. bill Says:

You people are amazing in particular this JARHEAD GUY, You act like the analysts who tell us every season where each team will be. As far as i can tell Tampa was suppose to be the seller dweller in their division and you are quibbling over an interception in a play off game you weren’t even supposed to be in. Oh and according to the experts Baker Mayfield was one of the big reason you were supposed to be seller dwellers, because he wasn’t CLUTCH!

I guess when someone points out weaknesses in your arguments, you imply they are nitwits.

Baker Mayfields career is closer to Jameis Winston then Joe Burrow or CJ Stroud.

nah all it take is it to reason like one by not kowing basic facts and being so daft as to claim 4,000 average is a bad thing in the NFL

You’ll earn the name every time.

  87. Student of the Game Says:

Rod Munch, have you watched the last offensive play and said interception? The LB was out of position and frankly made a hell of a play diving for the ball. Give the Loins defense some credit for also being at the top of their game that day.

  88. Student of the Game Says:

Geno, how well do you through with a torn labrum? Or without blind side all-pro tackle protecting you? Your listed stats prove nothing. That was then, this is now. Mayfield will get 30-40 million a year multiple years either with the Bucs or somewhere else. Mic drop.

  89. Capt.Tim Says:

    Jackson is hugely overrated.
He is on a great team. If he was half as talented as some believe- he’d be wearing Superbowl rings.
Wont see me betting on him in Vegas.
He holds the Ravens back, not lifting them up.
He seems like a good guy, but I wouldnt trade for him, or want him leading the Bucs

  90. Mike Says:

Some are still trying to justify Mayfield as being better than what he is, comparing any thing they can to great QBS but the bottom line is Baker is a middle of the pack QB, accept it. I hope all you Baker believers one day will see that. Oh wait I heard baker statistically washes his car better than mahomes, quick sign him that makes him better than mahomes

  91. Davyboy Says:

We say Baker is good Mike because Baker led a team that wasnt supposed to do anything with a running game ranked 32nd to within a game and few plays of the superbowl. Obviously you think if your first year qb doesn’t take you to a superbowl his first year he’s not a good one. Wake up bro. Can you imagine if the running game just existed.

  92. Davyboy Says:

Tell us what YOUR qb would do better…
