Bucs Interview Three Potential Special Teams Coaches
February 6th, 2024Well, this isn’t so special.
It seems the Bucs interviewed coaches to replace retired special teams chief Keith Armstrong. Former Titans special teams coach Craig Aukerman and ex-Giants special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey, and Armstrong’s assistant, former Bucs safety Keith Tandy, the Bucs announced yesterday.
Just based on 2023 special teams rankings, Aukerman and McGaughey don’t exactly knock it out of the park.
The Titans and Giants ranked Nos. 21 and 23, respectively, per respected veteran NFL scribe Rich Gosselin.
Aukerman, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, found his way on the unemployment line in an interesting manner.
His dismissal came after a game that saw the Colts block a pair of punts, which led to a touchdown and a season-ending injury to punter Ryan Stonehouse that contributed to a missed extra point that helped cost the Titans the game.
Yeah, that’s all the Bucs need. Hire a dude responsible for setting up blocking coverage on the punt team that would get stud punter Jake Camarda maimed.
McGaughey had been with the Giants since 2018.
Say what you want about Armstrong but the Bucs, per Gosselin, were ranked No. 19 in special teams. Joe is guessing the strong punting and kicking raised the Bucs’ ranking, up from No. 30 last year.

Also interviewed the Tandy man and assistant STC from the Saints Galiano.

Not real excited about recycling average ST coaches. Find some eager, talented young coach with energy who can light a fire under some butts. Maybe Galiano is that, maybe it’s Tandy, maybe someone else we haven’t heard of.

Tandy.

Can’t remember which coach said it. But Tandy was recognized during his playing days and as a smart player with good coaching potential.

Tandy.

Agree, Tandy.

Well this could bring Tandy man out of hiding on JBF.

Go with Tandy

Bowles is a terrible head coach this is a one-year gig. The smartest thing the team could do is s*** can of right now. I know that’s not going to happen right now but it will happen.
February 6th, 2024 at 7:25 am
Yup, I’m for going with Tandy, those other guys suck.
February 6th, 2024 at 7:56 am
Give Tandy the job! I remember interviews with him saying he was gonna be a coach when he retired so you know he’s dedicated to it..

So much musical chairs with failed coaches in this league. It’s the same thing with failed QBs. Just try new blood. Stop with the retreads.

Bowles will hire Aukerman . He needs coaches he can blame his failures on.

Gruden is looking for a toehold!

@ Joe
“Joe is guessing the strong punting and kicking raised the Bucs’ ranking, up from No. 30 last year.”
I believe the special teams improved also due to the roster being filed with rookies and UDFAs…
When your roster is filled with old overpaid veterans special team units suffer.

Tandy, it’s a No Brainer! Players already know him and would run through a wall to meet his expectations. Master Motivator and you’re really getting 2 for 1. He hasn’t forgotten the Secondary Techniques he used during his 7 years as a Safety with the Bucs which I promise you will give tips to those guys. Honestly, I think we have a talented group back there. Bowles make yourself look good and hire The TandyMan!!!

Licht and posse need to look into drafting/UDFAing a kick returner as well as a HC.
February 6th, 2024 at 4:10 pm
HC/ST.
February 6th, 2024 at 5:11 pm
I’d prob go with Tandy out of that uninspiring group
