Baker Mayfield To The Falcons?
January 23rd, 2024Joe has talked about Baker Mayfield being recruited to the Falcons this offseason many, many times over the past two months on the Ira Kaufman Podcast.
Now, an esteemed NFL insider is going there.
Nearly extinguished Sports Illustrated has a longtime NFL insider named Albert Breer. Lots of big names take his calls, even though Joe’s not sure a ton of folks are reading Breer’s work.
The former Patriots beat writer hopped on The Rich Eisen Show today and suggested that if the Falcons sign free agent Bill Belicheat to be their head coach, Baker Mayfield could be the quarterback they target in free agency.
It’s assumed the Belicheat, at 71 years old, isn’t interested in a rookie QB. He needs wins in a hurry to break Don Shula’s all-time wins record as a head coach.
Breer said with confidence that Belicheat really liked Mayfield coming out of college in the 2018 NFL Draft.
“Bill Belichick put Josh McDaniels on a plane the week of the draft to go work out Baker Mayfield in Norman, OK, ” Breer added.
“If the Falcons land Belichick, does Tampa have to franchise Baker to keep him way from Atlanta?” Breer asked rhetorically.
None of this surprises Joe, so Joe has little to add and will wait for Falcons owner Arthur Blank to make his next move. Atlanta has cap room, big time weapons and a running game — and possibly a Hall of Fame coach with job security. Those might entice Mayfield.
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:10 pm
I believe Baker will be signed before free agency begins, as will Evans.
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:13 pm
We have to remember that players are human too and most probably don’t like picking up and moving every damn year…which Baker has done the last few years. He has organization and player comfortability to add to that (continuity factor)! He’s not leaving Tampa unless we don’t try to retain him…which we will!
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:17 pm
If baker demands more than 25 million a year then let him go to the falcons or whoever for that matter.
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:18 pm
Brady and Kraft got Garapollo out of New England and Bill was not Happy. Jimmy G is set to make under 12 million in 2024 and Bill would bring him too Atlanta long before Mayfield.
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:25 pm
@conner50, baker is for sure going to be priced higher than 25 mil. heck just a franchise tag gets him 10 mil more than that. Hes gonna get himself closer to that 40 million range. Baker played better this season than any Buc quarterback not named Tom Brady has EVER. It would be incredibly foolish to let the youngest most talented qb in franchise history walk out because we dont want to pay absolute bottom tier qb money to him. Im fine giving him up to 43 million a year, beyond that it gets dicey. but 25 is wayyyyy too low.
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:26 pm
Imagine being left with Toilet and Trask argh.
Doom and Gloom, catastrophizing.
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:28 pm
It’s very possible Baker could follow Canales wherever he goes.
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:29 pm
I Baker going wherever Canales goes especially if that team does not have a qb
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:31 pm
This is going to be a really exciting run to the next season. Much better than last year.
Bowles will be back but most everything else is up in the air. Bucs made it through this year and but for dropsies by the D backfield would still be going.
Canalas would not be such a great loss. We could find someone else.
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:35 pm
Trask is waiting in the wings if Bakefield leaves.
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:36 pm
Baker will go to whoever has the biggest bank truck with his name stenciled on it.
He might draw a line at domed stadiums or in the Sun Belt, because his game doesn’t work as well in snow.
He does realize that it might be now or never, so he is going to grab the money and run.
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:41 pm
BB was nothing without Brady. He is still unemployed. Atlanta is in no rush to hire him it seems. He has no other interviews we know of and only rumors of others maybe looking at him. One with an opening. I am not to worried about where he goes or what he does. I don’t think Baker would follow him.
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:41 pm
No way Bake is leaving with a newborn on the way and both sides wanting him in Tampa.
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:41 pm
ME13 may follow Mayfield were he to leave. ME is not banking on Trash and the Toilet keeping his 1000 yard streak alive.
Could be a domino effect with Canales, Mayfield and Evans.
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:43 pm
Advantage: Licht.
Evans and Baker want to play together over the next few years. As long as Licht gives fair offers, they will. Sign one first, and have Franchise Tag in back pocket.
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:44 pm
Bill and Josh McDaniels would be a good combo for the Falcons. No matter what NFL fans claim, Bill has it in him to succeed.
A Head Coach cannot reliably succeed without a quality QB…so once Tom left New England, that was that.
Give him a good QB now, and a good Oline, and he’ll turn the defense into something good.
I DO think Bill and Josh could succeed in Tampa…but I would rather have Harbaugh.
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:45 pm
Baker isn’t walking. He knows his market value. If there are teams lined up to pay him big money on a long term deal, we can franchise him and work out a trade.
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:45 pm
We are getting way, way ahead of ourselves here…..first, let’s see who is Atlanta’s coach……..second, we have the franchise hammer.
I will say this….the Falcons are a coach & a QB away from being a very good football team.
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:47 pm
If Bucs don’t have the stomach to pay big money for QB, they have Trask. Everyone says Trask can do the job, so maybe Baker should move on to the Falcons. Would be some high drama for those 2 games. I think this would make a lot of Buc fans happy to get rid of a QB that can never satisfy them. Bet Atlanta will be happy with it.
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:52 pm
We’ll be fine either way.
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:54 pm
Until Todd is replaced with a respectable/quality Hc, every other moves are just lateral…
Sucks to be ‘stuck with Bowles at HC!’
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:56 pm
Falcons have a top 10 draft order pick. Sign Tannehill, draft the successor. If he flourishes in training camp, start him. That roster just needs a game manager.
January 23rd, 2024 at 4:56 pm
Baker’s not going to grab the money and run. He’s already said that he’d like to return to the Bucs. Not exactly the kind of negotiating strategy you use if you’re only looking for a big payday.
25M per year is way too low, but I think he’d take something in the mid to high 30’s for 4 years plus incentives to make Tampa his home. Which is about 5M per year less than other teams would be willing to pay him. And the good news is that it would be a bargain for both parties.

Love that idea. Only thing better is Baker to Pittsburgh and Browns 2x/year. Baker to Falcons, can already hear the blog hate crew. “I never said that about Baker. I really wanted him to stay.”
Arthur Blank is an old billionaire with unlimited resources. He doesn’t want to wait around for a winner. Makes sense. He will dangle $45M/year for 5 and Baker will take it. The Trask patrol will finally get their dreams fulfilled.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:04 pm
Craig: Baker’s game “doesn’t work well in the snow?” What an absurd comment! Baker played 4 years in the snow in Cleveland. For God’s sake, in his Rookie season he threw for 27 TDs and almost 3800 yards in just 13 games. Give it a break already. It’s obvious that you know very little about Baker.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:04 pm
Baker should check in with ex patriot players to test the waters. Belichek’s
needs a good o coordinator that is going to buy in to building an offense for Baker.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:05 pm
Sounds like talk to try to puff up the price on Baker, or force the Bucs to franchise him. Now we will see how the Bucs respond.

lol at the meltdown in here about the domino effect
I TOLD YOU LADIES TO GET YOUR BROWN BAGS OUT!!!!!!!!!!!
the same ladies who approve of bowles and ME dropping balls.
baker leaving would not break my heart. The cold hard truth is this team got lucky this year. They know it, anyone with a brain knows it. They damn well better cash in and get as far from lovie as possible.
yall asked for it LOL

I am hoping Mayfield gets signed. Don’t pull a Hugh Culverhouse. Anyone around that can remember that fiasco.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:16 pm
ALso does want to Baker want to leave a supportive coaching staff for one that
may be looking for your replacement at first opportunity.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:16 pm
Oh my Trask it is a miracle. In Kyle we trust. Fact is anything can and will happen. How crazy and unpredictable was this year?
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:17 pm
It doesn’t really matter if Baker stays or goes we’re not winning a Championship until Todd Bowels is not our coach anymore….It takes a coach like Bruce with a risk It for the bizcuit mentality. I knew we were losing the Lions game as soon as Todd wouldn’t go for it on 4th and 1 and then went for 2 when it wasn’t needed…He makes stupid calls way to often……
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:22 pm
If you lose Evans and Mayfield and keep Bowls, you’re screwed.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:29 pm
you guys and your numbers…
3 years 100 mil should be okay
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:30 pm
We’d probably be better off with Kyle Trask. He’s much cheaper and we can spend that extra money on elite pass rushers and interior offensive linemen who can run block
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:30 pm
Our Bucs are not that far away guys. Sign Mayfield and Evans. And Get Us A pass Rush next season.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:31 pm
Most ever thing will remain with a cleaning out of inconsistent talent, such as: DW45, RN23, JTS9, and MF71. The owner’s like what they saw, especially the home playoff game!
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:32 pm
Wanna see Baker fail? Send him to ateam with a mediocre OC and less than stellar receiver group. Baker’ll be back if Canales returns. And icing on the cake if Evans returns. I suspect he isnt stupid. You run with the horse that brung ya.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:36 pm
Can you imagine we franchise Baker and he sits out?
Ity’s a Buc life.
Baker>>>>>>evans
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:46 pm
He’s not going anywhere. Target him all they want. If they don’t get a deal they will franchise him. Pretty confident they want a deal.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:52 pm
The Bucs brass saw everything we did. I’m pretty optimistic that Baker and Evans aren’t leaving. Pretty optimistic that Lavonte, McLaughlin and Winfield aren’t leaving either. Spend whatever is left on Hunter or Allen and a competent C.
January 23rd, 2024 at 5:55 pm
Joe – u are going to give me a heart attack! Baker will be a Buc. We took a low dollar gamble on Mayfield and it paid off. To let him walk after this season knowing we now have no chance of a first round QB, us Buc fans would all be left scratching our heads why and would be angry. We gambled, it paid off. We know now know our starting QB for the near future. We use our draft picks and free agency to improve other positions. Canales and Evans stay too.
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:00 pm
Let the average and inconsistent QB walk. This team can take another free agent to the playoffs next year. Keep your talent at the expense of losing an inconsistent QB. Next man up. Any free agent QB would love to come here and resurrect their career. Do it Jason.

Bonzai
“No matter what NFL fans claim, Bill has it in him to succeed.”
It’s not what NFL fans “claim”…it’s simply the reality of his results.
He has YET to win without Brady. He has a win % in the ten years without Brady of .420 for two different franchises spread out over three decades.
That allows for coaching the horrible Browns although somehow Baker managed to do what BB NEVER did…got the Browns to the playoffs and even won a first round game.
After the departure of Brady BB sucked in N.E. and he got to PICK HIS OWN QB.
It’s not that I “THINK” BB sucks without Brady. It’s a freaking fact that without Brady BB is a failure. As Lovie used to say..”that’s just the way it is.”
Do I think Bill is a morose dhead in need of a personality transplant. Absolutely . I concede I PERSONALLY loathe him more than anyone else in the entire NFL!
That OPINION though is totally separate from the FACT that BB has been a LOSER without Brady. He took a NE team 3 years removed from a SB and posted a losing record. And THEN…Brady.
Are ten years and two different franchises of failure not enough to at least ask why? IF BB gets ten years of failure why is Bowles revivled for posting the same record a .420 win %?
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:02 pm
Tye … ‘Until Todd is replaced with a respectable/quality Hc, every other moves are just lateral…’.
Best 2 DCs Bucs have had are Monte Kiffin & Todd Bowles. Monte coached here for 13 years, and his defenses averaged under a #7 ranking in Points Allowed over that period (take away the 2006 defense that ranked #21 & his defenses for the other 12 years would rank in the Top-10 at #5 average).
Todd has been DC here now for 5 years, and his defenses have averaged a tad over #12 in Points Allowed (take away his 1st-year 2019 defense that ranked #29 & his defenses for the other 4 years would rank in the Top-10 at #8 average).
What Todd’s done here in resurrecting our defense has been no small feat. From the time Monte left after 2008 until Todd arrived in 2019, the Bucs defense averaged slightly over a #23 ranking in Points Allowed. Our record for those 10 years? A miserable 55-105 from 2009 thru 2018. Our offenses sucked, but so did our defenses.
We had 3 different GMs & 4 different coaches in that 10 year period. The one constant during that entire 2009 – 2018 period? Our owners. They got to pick the GMs & they obviously have the final say on the coaches. Be careful what you wish for, lest we end up back where we started.

———
I’m not a Baker Boi, but he’ll definitely get more than that. While I don’t think the market is quite as strong for Baker as many think (most teams that need QBs are going to draft them), it only takes one team to want him to drive up the price.
I think he’ll likely get something like $35m, hopefully with a way for the Bucs to get out of the deal after one year – or keep him for around $40m beyond that. It’s ridiculous that he’d make more than twice what Brady made, but Brady wanted to win championships and would literally take less money to do so – and it’s nothing against Baker that he’s not making that deal, since he’s not Brady, and there’s literally no other QB in football that has done that as far as I know.
In any case, if the Falcons want to bid him up, the Bucs should do all they can to get Baker as much money as possible, and stick them with that contract. The rate of QBs who were busts, coming off career years, then getting a big deal – well, the odds are that Baker won’t repeat. That’s just history, it doesn’t mean Baker will bust, but to pretend like it’s not a risky bet is nonsense.

Silly season has officially begun. So far i’ve read insiders take that Mayfield will be in Vegas, Pittsburgh, New England now Atlanta. They just started on Mike E, forget where he was going
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:20 pm
Or going to the Panthers along with Canales to play with old friend at GM.
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:26 pm
Pointless discussion. What is NE gonna do, offer mayfield like 10mil a year more than Licht would? Baker wants to be here, he likes the teammates and coaches, and the success of making it past round 1 of the playoffs. He’s getting an offer by us and it’s not likely to be some insulting low ball over. He’s not going to NE to play Bills and Miami twice a year with no weapons unless NE offered him Joe Burrow money
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:30 pm
Baker is going nowhere. There’s a higher probability they don’t sign Evans than BM.
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:33 pm
This is simple. Franchise Mayfield. Sign Evans, David, Winfield. Then go back to Matfield and get a multi-year deal done. Everybody wins.
Sorry to go off topic, but I want to get back to Bowles’ time out malfeasance. An internet search led me to a Barstool Sports (I don’t know anything about this publication article that includes a theory on “the truth.” It reads as follows:
“The Bucs called their 3rd timeout at some point earlier in the quarter. As I understand it, they were given that timeout back due to a penalty. I don’t think Todd Bowles realized that. I don’t think he had any idea that they had 1 timeout left, and he’s trying to cover his a__ at the press conference.”
I earlier posted what I believed to be the truth:
“He didn’t realize 36 seconds remained. He just assumed the Lions used their fully allotted play clock between snaps which would have left about 12 seconds.”
I suppose either could be true. But either way, Bowles is an insubordinate liar and needs to go.
#Fire the LIAR!!!
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:34 pm
They will just give him the franchise tag if they want him and can’t get a deal done before free agency.
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:44 pm
Lol, just read the Spotrac ranks DW at $80mil for 4 years
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:53 pm
Bakers pocket escapability is among the best in the NFL…he truly is an escape artist…..only 28 years and he played like a former 1st overall pick this.
Also, he has matured into a fantastic leader cause he definitely did have some immaturity issues coming out of college and early with the Browns but thats way behind him now.
Im telling you the Bucs may have stolen a franchise QB off the streets.
I could care less about Oklahoma or wherever else he went…but after years of watching Freeman, Glennon, McCown, Winstons interceptions, 2022 Brady, I know good QB play when I see it.
Pay the man.
January 23rd, 2024 at 6:58 pm
Folks, for the love of G*d, please stop comparing Brady after 40(and $400 million in career earnings) to Baker Mayfield. Brady plus Gisele were worth close to a BILLION dollars. Yeah, a billion. Brady had the luxury of taking less money. SMDH.
People, please educate yourselves before spewing non-sense.
Thanks.

there was a lot of over achieving here this year…
minus the 6 of 7 skid…
so a lot of guys stock has risen…
so, more the reason to bail out…
if one major player bounces elsewhere, it can cause a domino effect for high stock guys to bounce the f outta here…
if canales leaves, does baker stay…?
if baker leave does mike want to stay with yet another new qb…?
if mike leaves, is everyone shellshocked and the cards start falling,…?
interesting offseason ahead for all us diehard bucs foos

IMHO I do not believe BB would be interested in Mayfield, if you look at his History of QB selections ,( Bledsoe, Brady, Garofalo), he likes tall, pocket passers , who can move around in the pocket but he doesn’t like scramblers , ( can’t blame him , too many of those multi million dollar types end too many seasons as multi-million dollar invalids watching from the sidelines), I think Kyle Trask is the perfect type of QB , Bill Belichick would be interested in, and he would have no qualms about taking a second round Quarterback with “no experience”, ( remember Brady was a sixth round pick, with ,“no experience” , that sat and learned behind Brady for two years , (someone that is already familiar with the Brady /Belichick system) , and as a bonus , the Falcons already have Kyle Pitts ,(who Kyle Trask had some pretty good years with), I’m sure Belichick could find a backup QB to trade for Trask on the cheap, then Mayfield’s old pal Bowles could slap the franchise tag on him and might even still be able to pay Evans enough money to keep him here , and you would have one big happy sycophantic family for , maybe another year, of dreaming about the SuperBowl, ( until the reality of Cap Hell once again sinks in). Sounds like it would be a good deal for everyone all around.

the potential domino effect on the offensive side is real…
canales and baker have one year of tenure here…
they’ve already told mike “no” to his contract demands before the season – he can’t be too thrilled with that – that’s why he was YACing the f outta sheet this year…instead of doing the usual and protecting the body…
wirfs will remain even if all 3 above said dudes bounce…
but if any of those 3 leave it can cause the others to be out as well…
something to be concerned with because that trio is our offense right there…outside of rb1
January 23rd, 2024 at 7:15 pm
I’m ok with Baker leaving if he needs $40m
He’s a top 30 QB in the league, maybe top 20.
But it’s a roster construction problem. The NFL cheat code are QBs on rookie deals. If you can get a QB that plays top 20 on a rookie deal you are a very good team. If they play top 10, you can win a SB.
But paying massive $ to a mid to lower QB1? You won’t have the dollars to fill out the roster with the talent you need.
If he wants to walk I’d draft a couple QBs and see what we can do. Use the savings on a few FAs and resign our other guys

———–
I think you’re right, but if he goes elsewhere he might get that $40m. Again, it only takes one team to drive up the price, and Atlanta is desperate enough at QB to take a huge risk like that – and giving Baker any sort of real multi-year deal at that price would be extremely risky based on the history of players who bust coming off big career years like this. Doesn’t mean Baker will bust, but to bet your job giving Baker a huge big money deal, well that will get you fired if it doesn’t go well. If that looks like it’s going to happen, the Bucs should bid up his price as much as possible before handing him off to the Falcons, and hope they stick Atlanta with a terrible contract.
With that said, I still assume the Bucs will resign him before he gets to FA. Have to get Winfield and Evans done first, but using void years and performance bonuses, etc, the Bucs can spread out salaries just about any way they want. I mean that’s how the Saints go into every offseason like $100-million over the cap, and somehow sign a guy like Derek Carr to a huge big money deal (which was stupid, to be clear).

See, this idiocy is why people point and laugh at the Baker Bois.
Here’s an idea, kiddo — stop comparing Baker to the all-time greats. Stop saying he’s better than Brady, Mahomes, Brees, etc. Seriously, that doesn’t help you in any way.
If you like Baker, and we know you’re in love with him and he’s all you think about, then do him a favor and stop setting the bar impossibly high (and no, that wasn’t a short joke).
But you can’t, because members of a cult can never not go too far. If they could control themselves, they’d have never joined the cult in the first place.

the defense wasn’t all that good this year, so i’m thinking that’s the side of the ball where we will cut our loses heavier…
we will lose a few long time bucs who you hate to see go, and some underachievers as well…
we’ve gotta cut salaries on the defensive side of the ball mostly and lock down our offensive studs across the board…
also sign winfield for sure…
also resign david moore – i like his role – and it should increase a bit…
i hate to make a list of guys to dump so i won’t…but theres clearly about 8-10 in total on both sides that you need to let go for salary relief and so you can continue to build properly…
build the trenches on both sides…
especially the defensive side if you include linebackers as the trenches in a 3-4 defense…also gotta add in an ILB

Nice prediction Rod Munch, keep those great takes coming

Negotiate a long term deal with Baker.
If it doesn’t work out then franchise him for $35 million.
Let Baker’s wife give birth and see how happy she is to uproot her newborn’s life and routine to move which is the most stressful life experience next to divorce and a job change, which means Baker would be subjecting his wife who might be dealing with post partum depression to even more stress.
Baker isn’t going anywhere.
Anyone with a brain knows this.
Give Baker a good deal and he’ll keep baking for the Bucs.
January 23rd, 2024 at 7:41 pm
@Rod Munch
They also only bring up 2022 Brady. They are comparing their idol to the GOAT’s last year of his career at 45. What about 2020 or 2021 Baker Bois? He doesn’t even compared to Brady’s first two years. I’m not trying to slight Baker but if you are trying to compare him to the GOAT he’s going to pale in comparison.
Baker had a solid year and closed it out strong. I’ll give him a mulligan for the Panthers game because he was clearly playing hurt. Thought he finished the season playing well in 9 of his 18 games. I don’t see teams shelling out 40-45 like some are suggesting after that. Especially not a five year deal. Teams aren’t going to just look at this year. He had two down years before this one. That’s not enough consistency for teams to throw that type of money and long term commitment Maybe I’ll be proven wrong and a team gets desperate but I really don’t see it

Mayfield’s final passer rating for the 2023 playoffs is 106.3, based on a 62.3% completion rate, 8.9 yards per attempt and 6-2 TD-INT ratio. That’s the highest passer rating by any quarterback with at least 25 attempts in Bucs postseason history. His yards per attempt (8.9) and touchdown percentage (7.8%) are also new team postseason records.
Baker Mayfield: 106.3 Tom Brady: 89.8 Brad Johnson: 66.5 Jeff Garcia: 60.5 Chris Simms: 56.7
Mayfield also started two playoff games for the Cleveland Browns after the 2020 season and he now owns an overall career postseason passer rating of 100.4. That ranks fourth among all active NFL quarterbacks who have started at least three playoff games.

His wife is reported to love Tampa.
Happy wife, happy life.
Take from a guy who’s been married to his queen for 30 some odd years and kids and grandkids later.
Baker isn’t going anywhere.
Baker is baking a cake for Tampa only.
January 23rd, 2024 at 7:46 pm
The only place Canales would go is Carolina and they just spent a #1 pick on Bryce Young so Baker wouldn’t go there. However, if Canales goes to Carolina and the Bucs have to hire a new OC, Baker (and Evans) would probably have more interest in leaving Tampa. If Canales stays here, I think they will both stay here.
January 23rd, 2024 at 7:52 pm
@Rod Munch
They also only bring up 2022 Brady. They are comparing their golden child to the GOAT’s last year of his career at 45 with an incompetent OC that is still jobless. What about 2020 or 2021? He doesn’t even compared to Brady’s first two years here. I’m not trying to slight Baker but if you are trying to compare him to the GOAT he’s going to pale in comparison.
Baker had a solid year and closed it out strong. I’ll give him a mulligan for the Panthers game because he was clearly playing hurt. Thought he finished the season playing well in 9 of his 18 starts. Would like to see if he can build on that next yea.
I don’t see teams shelling out 40-45 like some are suggesting after just a solid year. Especially not a five year deal. Teams aren’t going to just look at this year. He had two down years before this one. That’s not enough consistency for teams to throw that type of money and long term commitment. They might’ve gotten Baker at 3 years 100 million after Green Bay..but that ship has sailed. I wondered if they tried to extend him earlier this year, and he said no….
January 23rd, 2024 at 8:01 pm
I am sure Breer would pick up if Baker’s agent called, too. Belichick is very particular about his QBs, excepting his failed experiment with Cam Newton. Baker seems like the opposite type to what he prefers.
Baker isn’t a steal anymore if the Bucs win a bidding war to pay him big money. I am a fan but Trask looked good last preseason, too. Chase Young would be a good addition.
January 23rd, 2024 at 8:02 pm
Bucs are not letting Mayfield go to Falcons, enticed or not.
And if the Bucs had a better Center, Mayfield wouldn’t have been rushed into throwing that last interception.
January 23rd, 2024 at 8:05 pm
His contract is void Feb 19. Which means well know sooner,, I believe..
a) Baker doesn’t sign until after free agency begins..
b) Fields offers from Pats, Raiders, Steelers, Possibly Broncos and Falcons
c) Those offers are made public by his agent
d) Baker leverages for a longer term, more cap friendly deal
e) 4-6 years 210 Million ( nice signing bonus )
f) Comes off magnanimous, leaves money on table from other teams
g) I could be wrong, But I had these guys to win the divison at 9 to 1 $$$$ 🙂
January 23rd, 2024 at 8:15 pm
What happened was this:
On the FIRST INTERCEPTION they brought a ball in from the outside after they rolled it around in the snow & then it was wet & THAT’S WHY IT WENT THROUGH MIKE’S HANDS. Then on the SECOND INTERCEPTION what happened was for the last two minutes Ford Field became a retractable dome & the roof opened & the wind blew the ball into the arms of Derrick Barnes. Plus supposedly Eminem poisoned the Bucs pregame meal, too! When they walked in THEY WALKED IN WITH VOMIT ON THEIR SWEATERS & IT WAS MOM’S SPAGHETTI! Eminem paid the refs, too!

Look up Tom Bradys 2022 stats and compare those vs Baker this year and see who was better…..
Thanks for playing
———–
See, this idiocy is why people point and laugh at the Baker Bois.
Here’s an idea, kiddo — stop comparing Baker to the all-time greats. Stop saying he’s better than Brady, Mahomes, Brees, etc. Seriously, that doesn’t help you in any way.
________
Hey Thickhead Munch,
Nobody said Baker was better than those QB’s. What he said was Mayfield had a better STATISTICAL season in 2023 than Brady did in 2022. What is unclear about that? I have also said that Mayfield first full 6 years in NFL are STATISTICALLY similar to Brady and Brees first 6 years. Not sure why you find that so complicated? An honest person would just go the Pro Football Reference and see the data. You are heavily invested in the Mayfield Sucks Brigade and refuse to even look at the data. That’s OK most on this blog know you to be all hat and no cattle.
January 23rd, 2024 at 8:23 pm
Please Falcons, overpay Baker, get in cap hell…. I don’t see an Evans or Godwin up there. 7-10.
January 23rd, 2024 at 8:27 pm
After watching Bowels soil the bed in the 4th Q of Lions game, I’d expect them all to leave.
January 23rd, 2024 at 8:41 pm
Alanbucs. Please stop making excuses for Baker he threw a pick with a 1 48 seconds left and he had time to drive the field and score but he choked just admit it. That’s not hate that’s calling it what your eyes see on the field!! He choked!!!!!
January 23rd, 2024 at 8:43 pm
Rod Munch,
I got sent to the penalty box for responding apparently inappropriately to your response to Tbbubcs3. above.
He didn’t say that Mayfield was better than anyone. He said, clearly, that Mayfield 2023 season including playoffs was better STATISTICALLY than Brady STATISTICALLY 2022 season including playoffs. That is easy enough to confirm by checking the data for each player on Pro Football Reference. I have said that Mayfield first 6 years in the NFL concluded this season looks STATISTICALLY similar to Brady and Brees FIRST SIX YEARS. Again, not hard to check for anyone who really wants to know the facts. This has nothing to do with W-L records during those time periods. Just look at the first six years for each player. The relevant data is Comp%, TD’s, INT, YDS/A. The key here is you have to want to know.
January 23rd, 2024 at 8:44 pm
I dont see it. Falcons have $25mm in cap space. They have 3 $20mm players under contract.
January 23rd, 2024 at 8:53 pm
Derek says u have the rite answer he a will work out a deal here he is a man of his word he wud have liked a better deal last year but he knew the odds he already new bowles he is all in here he is happy at his new address TAMPA BAY
January 23rd, 2024 at 9:04 pm
If Canales stays here and they re-sign Evans, I don’t see Mayfield going anywhere.
And I am not scared of Bill coaching in the division one single bit. He’s never done anything without Brady and it seems the game is passing him by lately.
January 23rd, 2024 at 9:16 pm
While baker did throw a pick in 2 minute drill has no real affect on the playoff performance he has had in his playoff history that’s like rub it in evens face for the assists in the 1st INT & then dropping several passes I am not not picking anyone shit happens & shit did happen it’s just the beginning of a new era in Tampa enjoy the new show it is going to be really good just like this year was really exciting good times ahead for bucs fans
January 23rd, 2024 at 9:19 pm
hay if Canales leaves here after 1 iffy year here he ended the season a good note he is no HC as of rite now most of these guys today have a a hefty resume under there belt Canales is still in training he is still in diaper stage

No problem with Mayfield exploring his options especially being this may be his last big pay day so I do not think it’s a guarantee the Bucs can keep him.
January 23rd, 2024 at 9:39 pm
stpetebucfan, I guess I’m less biased.
All I know is that for 20 years, the Patriots were the team nearly every free agent wanted to be one, and that was not all Brady.
And there is a big argument that BBs defense played as big a role as Tom Brady.
BB is a jerk in press conferences from what glimpses I have seen, but just because the Pats struggled after Brady left, that doesn’t mean BB sucked. It means a great QB makes a huge difference.
January 23rd, 2024 at 9:43 pm
Very Simple. Franchise Baker, thats 30+ million. And then draft the best prospect you can from where they pick from in Rds 1-3. Hopefully Baker will continue to get better. But still you draft the best QB prospect you can.

Mayfield threw the interception, the Bucs lost and Hainsey is a weak revolving door at Centet
January 23rd, 2024 at 9:53 pm
Baker Mayfield.
Here is the simple, undeniable truth: the Bucs cannot afford him without having to sabotage him.
By that, I mean say we sign or franchise him … Add in Evans for $25m + dead cap, Winfield, and several free agents, and we’re hurting.
That’s not even counting free agents we need to pick up and the draft picks.
To do it, we would have to make a bunch of sacrifices…and Mayfield would suffer for them.
And, to top it off, what if Mayfield regresses next year? Yikes.
January 23rd, 2024 at 10:05 pm
Baker is what Tampa is about. Toughness, heart, and willing to put the W for the team before his own body

“He might draw a line at domed stadiums or in the Sun Belt, because his game doesn’t work as well in snow.“
lol clearly you haven’t followed baker at all. oklahoma weather is not exactly warm during late fall/early winter. in november temps go from 10 degrees one day to 70 the next, and back to 20 the day after that. he played here for 4 years, and then went to cleveland and played for four years. in fact, other than a couple of games for the panthers and rams last season, this is the first time he’s played somewhere warm.

Man, some of yall are cold blooded sports fans. Gaming Baker’s family situation with upcoming newborn to try to reduce his paycheck. And acting like $10 million free agent QBs that are capable of leading a team all year are just sitting around. You just don’t find Top 15 QBs with winning playoff experience at the Home Depot parking lot.
And don’t say Joe Flacco. His QB rating was below Top 20 with a plethora of interceptions. Flacco does not hold up leading a team beyond 10+ regular season games. Defensives would eventually find his weaknesses in the offensive scheme and wipe him out. Last year he started a handful of games for the Jets and he eventually got benched for all the interceptions.
I think Baker would ask and get about $35-40M for 3 years. A discount for the sun, no state tax and goodwill. He already did his rookie contract. He broke the rookie TD record on a crappy team and lead two teams to playoff victories. Todd Bowles’ only playoff victory. Baker deserves to bank a little on his real second contract. A little more than Franchise Tag. With a healthy team option pay raise for 4th year opt out.
Something like $100M guaranteed for 3 years with maybe $150M total for 4 total years. Gives the team room to negotiate more years, more money and shifting cap after year 3 if he does well. On paper it also puts him in the category of Top 7-12 QBs pay at $37M+ average annually. He may only make $33.3M per year guaranteed for 3 years but that would show some team appreciation by designating him with top 10 QB money on average annual basis.
Still lots of cap room for Evans and Winfield. Draft or trade for some Edge rush and upgrade one guard to help the run game. If they don’t sign Baker, then they might as well let Evans walk, trade Godwin who would be on a contract year and just ride Trask. You would basically be quitting on 2024 when we were close in 2023. Praying on Trask and the young WR core to send us to a top 5 draft pick position we thought we were getting this year. Yall want to bet on a QB rookie contract – Shedeur Sanders, Jalen Milroe and Quinn Ewers look like they could lead this team into sniffing the playoff in 2028 with great older pieces we get in 2024 and 2025 with all that money we save on Baker.
January 23rd, 2024 at 10:49 pm
BUCS fans are the only football fans I’ve ever seen who have a QB that is loved by the coaches and the team, who elevated the teams level above what it SHOULD have been, took them to a title, a playoff win,one win against their most hated rival, and almost the Championship, all with a supporting cast that often wasn’t playing their best, who was positive the entire year, who beat both Green Bay with a perfect qbr, and the NFC champ from last year IN THE PLAYOFFS, who has been a class-act, and who LOVES it here and embracing the community, who is in the top four in qbr in the postseason (it means top four in actual playoff production, you know, yards and TDs!) And y’all either don’t want to pay him, think an untested QB might be better, weren’t satisfied with his performance, or think you’ll just easily draft someone that’ll magically replace him?! I don’t know of any other fans that are quite THAT delusional. To the BUCS fans that enjoyed AND appreciated this season, courtesy of Mayfield, Bowles, Canales, Evans, and the rest of the players, hats off to you! This was a great stretch to watch with all of the hard to get wins, what a year! Go Baker, Go BUCS!
January 23rd, 2024 at 11:01 pm
What Baker did this season certainly exceeded my expectations. He’s earned back the role of starter in the NFL.
We never got to see Trask though. We don’t know if he can be a special player in this league.
Make no mistake Baker was a top 10 QB this year.
Keep in mind though this was his 7th year in the league. Trask gave him a run for his money despite being earmarked day one on a fake QB competition. Trask has no experience outside a dozen snaps. To me that shows you something.
Trask could have been the guy with Canales having a very good year. Instead it was Baker because Bowles liked him. It just rolls that way. Bad luck for Trask. Great for Baker.
We’ll see what happens next.
January 23rd, 2024 at 11:05 pm
Bucs can give Evans a payday and defer much of it. Obviously we’re trying to avoid making that a habit, but I believe Evans can be an exception
January 23rd, 2024 at 11:06 pm
I LOVE how triggered many of you get when you even dare to mention Baker Mayfields name in the same sentence as Brady.
Yes, geniuses Tom Brady is the greatest QB whos ever played……whos even arguing that?
But Brady was average at best in his final year and lead a bottom 5 offense and the Bucs were able to find a much better option at QB from a washed Tom Brady.
January 23rd, 2024 at 11:07 pm
“job security”?
LOL – Belkicheat is 71 years old….
He’s got 3 years tops as HC if Atlanta hires him.
Which is the same amount of time BB will need to get those 15 wins if he takes the Atlanta job….

They do this because while they chide anybody who supports what Baker accomplished in Cleveland or this year in Tampa as a “bakerbois”. When one runs out of actual facts they have to resort to “clever’ nicknames.
The idea that comparing one QB in his prime for a single season against an over the hill, disinterested, and distracted GOAT is not the same as comparing an ENTIRE CAREER!!!
The ONLY QB I’ve ever read about being compared to Brady career wise as in SCOREBOARD the chance to win 8 SB’s is Mahomes. Even then I don’t believe very many make book on it but Mahomes is the only one!
January 23rd, 2024 at 11:17 pm
“What about 2020 or 2021 Baker Bois?”
Lol Dom, what kind of point is that? Theres not a single QB currently playing in the NFL that has had a better 2 year run than Brady his first 2 years with the Bucs.
January 23rd, 2024 at 11:19 pm
Baker is too inconsistent throughout his career and this past season. If he was Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson or even Jared Goff consistent yeah I’d say pay him but not more than $30 mill /3 years. We have a team to load up and I’m still willing to go with Trask and save the money to get a better center/guard/DE and resign our more important players.

I like that plan. Too risky next year to run it back with Baker, Evans and Godwin. Just wipe them all off our squad for Trask and some upcoming offensive weapons. We could be the Atlanta Falcons 2.0 or Tennessee Titans 2.0. Get our coach fired and put in an offensive minded coach in 2025 with more draft capital. Playoffs 2028 here we come.
January 23rd, 2024 at 11:36 pm
Love how triggered the fanbois get when anything not putting Baker in a basking glorious light of all mighty praise is typed by anyone and then the name calling and oh STASTICALLY is typed but the most important statistic of all is never posted by them…. his win/ loss record and that is what they want us pay him$120 mil for 5 years, a losing record after 6 seasons.
January 23rd, 2024 at 11:46 pm
GhostofBrady we pay him all that money and can’t resign Evans who was more than 25% of Baker’s production and he goes back to bad Baker what then? We’re stuck like Chuck. Trask showed a lot in the preseason and Baker needed a coaches vote to get the starting gig. Baker is no Mahomes and will never be able to take us further without a better team around him. Then like you said Playoffs 2028 once we cut bait after paying him all that money
January 23rd, 2024 at 11:56 pm
Nitpicking single season stats is not a very reliable indicator of future performance, it is much better to look at the entire body of a player or coaches work to get a much better picture of future performance or trends, you can see if they are trending up or declining and by how much, for example , We picked up Tom Brady , who was past his prime but still performing at a very high level and still turning in winning records and it paid off for us with a Super Bowl victory and some very good but declining years , while he had been a great quarterback , the greatest of all time , it would not have been advantageous for us to offer him another contract , especially at the price he would have commanded, but there are many indicators , no brainers, that make it much easier to predict future success or failure , for example , if , after a coach or quarterback has coached or played a majority of his projected career , and they have been sub .500 career performers , the chances of them leading a team to a Championship is slim to none , in fact , there has never been a coach or quarterback with a sub..500 career winning record that has ever led a team to a Super Bowl! So be careful who you spend your money on!

@DavidBigBucsFan99
I think this year we had like $35M in lost dead cap space that was borrowed on Brady’s previous contract. I see other clips saying it was $81M in dead cap for 2023. I think 2024 will be much better for having room to pay players. PFF is showing we have $35M in cap space going into 2024. Others are reporting $70-$80M in cap space going into 2024. No clue but it sounds it will be a lot better than 2023. I think it would be great we could keep all the players, pay Baker $30-35M to replace Brady’s dead cap bill and run it back. We were soo close. I don’t care what anyone say – holding the Lions to 17 points and tying them after 3 quarters in that environment was awesome team effort. We just wore down on defense.
I agree the Baker thing at least for next year needs Evans to see much of the value Baker brings. Or another 1200+ yards 10 TD #1 WR in the draft – good luck finding one of those at our draft position! I am hoping the extra cap space will allow us to keep Evans without sacrificing too many other pieces. I think they can probably drag Baker’s contract with voidable years to make 2024 and 2025 as low as $25M against the cap. It’s all voodoo economics with signing bonus, roster bonus and voidable years. Same way we got into $81M dead cap in 2023. But let’s pay that credit card bill in 2026 for maybe playoff runs in 2024 and 2025 with what we got now. Or just crash the party now and give up on Baker, Evans and Godwin. Give Trask a year. If Trask works, we got a diamond. If he don’t, we’ll get Bowles (who I like) fired and maybe high draft capital.
Franchising Baker now limits the ability to voodoo economics paying the other pieces. Just let him go to Atlanta and have Bellicheck mess up his career. LOL.

Letting Mayfield walk after last season would be such a Buc thing to do. Slim pickings – who do you bring in to start? Garopolo? Tyrod Taylor? Cousins?
If the answer is Trask, then the tank is on. Doubtful they keep Evans – he already went through the Jameis experience. Doubt he’d wanna repeat it with Trask.
The only good that would come out of starting Trask is a top 5 pick in 2025 and a new coaching staff.

Here we go again with QB W-L records as the most important measure of QB skill. Doesn’t matter to these brilliant blog analysts that QB’s don’ t make tackles , cover receivers or sack opposing QB’s. I am sure that most pro football GM’s get the point even if the anti Baker Brigade seems unwilling or incapable. Mostly they are unwilling because after you have invested a lot of your ego in running down Mayfield what else can you point to? Next thing the same Baker Haters turn too is weird derogatory name calling “fan bois” to those who on these pages have consistently defended Baker. Pretty obvious in the recently completed season which group was more correct about Baker. When he is departs in 2024 for greener pastures, the same core of Baker Haters will deny all and tell us what Tampa management should have done. Very glad for those on these pages who have consistently stood up for Baker against the playground bullies who from day one have tried to bury Baker and those of us who have stood by him.

This just in. Browns make blockbuster trade with the Bucs, Watson for Mayfield. As a Browns fan, and because of Baker, I rooted for you guys all season long. If the Bucs get rid of him, I will root for the new team all day long, even if it’s against the Bucs, while secretly being satisfied if it were to be against the Browns.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:09 am
“Baker got screwed over by the Browns. There’s no other way around it,” Chris Simms told the New York Post on Friday, January 19. “He played with a hurt shoulder for a year [2021] and didn’t play great. They used that against him and then went out and tried to get Deshaun Watson without letting him know. He cancelled them out, then they realized, ‘Oh, we’ve upset him. Now we have no quarterback. We have to finally get Deshaun Watson.’”

Trask Brigayde give it a rest
January 24th, 2024 at 7:21 am
Referencing my post above. As Karma would have it by screwing Baker they screwed themse!ves. The Browns lost 2 years of a 230 m fully guaranteed guy due to suspension and injury. Thjs year was not playing over Bakers head but a natural progression. Just take out
the last 2 years with injuries and a Browns character assassination to cover for their coddling of a true criminal. Bowles is not perfect but he was brilliant in picking and sticking with Baker despite the cries of the Traskidiots. Strouds is the exception not the rule. All the other rookie QBs were bad or injured.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:58 am
Signing Mayfield will mean a fourth season of Trask not getting a single series with the starters – Mayfield won’t allow it – and nobody knowing what Trask can do. For a guy who beat out Mayfield in training camp, that’s unbelievable.
January 24th, 2024 at 8:32 am
The Bucs should find a way to loan out Trask to the UFL to get playing time.
January 24th, 2024 at 8:36 am
Wins is a QB stat. Just like an MLB pitcher the QB puts the ball in play for roughly half the game. Fumbles, ints, and sacks can lose a game in a hurry just as TD passez can win it.
January 24th, 2024 at 8:46 am
I like the Baker for Watson trade. Watson to Bucs would be great for many of these bloggers. The same crew would get behind Charles Manson if he could catch passes and had 4.30 speed.
January 24th, 2024 at 8:55 am
We’ve seen athletes make “the right decision for their family” by going after the biggest payday so often we’re cynical about the process. The Rays rescue a player off the scrap heap, he has a decent year,, and takes his rejuvenated career elsewhere. But there are exceptions to everything. After what Mayfield has been through, I believe he will accept a fair offer from the Bucs even if he gets offered more elsewhere. The special personal qualities that enabled him to accomplish what he did this year, not just athletically but as an inspiration that helped his team dramatically outperform expectations

Having a newborn baby and wife, won’t keep Baker in Tampa. An extra 10-15,000,000 somewhere else is a lot of college money. That extra money will pay a lot of state income tax, as well. Baker will go with the money… he could be an injury away from retiring and he knows it.
Fitzmagic played for 9 teams and had 7 kids in 7 different cities. Baker is the same journeyman QB, except he doesn’t throw for over 400 yds… and likely will not last 17 years in the NFL.

@elite bucs
25 million a year is not way too low. Brady played his first two seasons with Tampa earning 25 a year, and he’s the GOAT! Can say the market is this and that but baker isn’t good enough for 40 plus million a year your crazy to be ok paying him that much. 25 is very generous and dang good money still

Jason Licht needs to offer Baker a contract extension ASAP and keep him in Tampa for the next few, several years. Evans might be a bit tougher and he is on the other side of 30, so there could be some negotiating room there assuming that Evans best years are probably behind him. We need to use the cap room to keep key defensive players, too. Antoine Winfield deservers a big contract. Bowles needs to go and an offensive mind needs to take over Tampa Bay. Go Bucs.

Matthew Stafford was part of Detroit Lions futility for years. Certain his W-L record wasn’t much with Detroit. Again, QB’s can’t control who plays on their respective team O and D lines yet somehow the bloggers here believe they can. Stafford leaves after LA pays King’s ransom to get him. Same Stafford with a new coach, new group of players suddenly becomes a Super Bowl winning QB. What about that bad record at Detroit? Just more nonsense that has nothing to do with Stanford’s skill set.
When teams workout QB’s they are looking at their ability to make all the throws and arm strength. They don’t consider a QB’s grade school ,PeeWee, high school or even college W-L record very much. If they did virtually every QB, who ever played at Ohio State would be a can’t miss pro.

I’m not sure what makes some Bucs fans think they’re experts on QB’s or where they get their sense of entitlement from
They’ve only seen one good QB in their life time and didn’t get him until he was 40 yrs old
I guess they just hate it when players, coaches and FO like a player more than they do… I always look forward to the crying… as if any of the above give a rats azz…

Move on Baker, you did your best with a crappy line that could not block for a running game and also could not protect you in the pocket either. Move on to big money and a knowledgeable fan base that will appreciate you

@baker’sfart
You’re some type of a putts.
Let me guess, you think Mayfield is reading your garbage? You would. You’re a cancer.
Face it, you’re a gross scrub attempting to belittle what baker has accomplished. I don’t appreciate your cheap shots at my qb. He would sooner deal with a child’s dirty diaper rather than read your slimmy dribble, Benedict Arnold!
Why don’t you just go back to the brown’s site where you belong. Baker is far too classy for the likes of you.

Baker fan. You can go with him because he is a average to below average quarterback. Just like he threw a pick on a game winning drive that no one is surprised of him doing. That’s why it’s not talked about by no bucs media outlets even this one!! Lol 🤣🤣

“Just like he threw a pick on a game winning drive that no one is surprised of him doing.”
i guess lamar jackson sucks too and should be ran out of the nfl. you know.. since he also threw a pick on a game winning drive – into triple coverage no less…
