Dan Campbell A Big Fan Of Baker Mayfield

January 18th, 2024

Cool story about Baker Mayfield.

Lions coach Dan Campbell never coached Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield. That doesn’t mean he hasn’t met him or hasn’t been impressed by him.

In fact, Campbell, speaking to the Detroit pen and mic club yesterday, told a story about how he first met Mayfield and came away impressed with how much of a team guy Mayfield is.

Back when Mayfield was coming out of Oklahoma in 2018, so too was Mayfield’s fellow Sooners teammate tight end Mark Andrews. Currently, Andrews plays for the Baltimore Crows.

At the time, Campbell was a tight ends coach for the slimy Saints. And he went to Norman to work out Andrews before the draft.

Of course, Campbell had to find someone to throw passes to Andrews. That’s when Campbell first met Mayfield. Campbell asked Mayfield if he could throw and Mayfield didn’t blink an eye to help out his teammate.

“Look, I have always been a Baker fan from afar,” Campbell began. “I loved him when he was coming out. This to me says a lot about him:

“I worked Mark Andrews out when he was coming out of OU, the same year [as Mayfield] in 2018. So I went out there, it’s cold, and his quarterback, he had like flipflops on — Baker. Baker is going to throw for him.

“Well, Baker threw for every one of his guys coming out that year. And I think he already had two private workouts the two days prior and he had one that afternoon and I think one the next day.

“So, that just says a lot about the guy. There is no wonder why people rally around him and follow him. Because he is that type of teammate.

“There’s a lot of guys that wouldn’t do that. ‘Well, I’ve got to save my arm, so-and-so club is coming in.’ Well, that wasn’t him. You can respect stuff like that now.”

Campbell said there are a lot of similarities between Mayfield and his quarterback, Jared Goff. Both started hot this season, hit a rough patch and fought their way through it and are now showing why they were drafted when they were drafted.

Like Mayfield, Goff was a first-overall pick in 2016 two years before Mayfield was drafted.

“With the way he is playing right now, he’s an issue,” Campbell said of Mayfield. “He gets rid of the ball fast and he’s accurate.”

Campbell also said the Bucs are one of the hottest teams in the playoffs. He thought the Bucs are a better team now than they were when the Lions beat them in Week 6.

Of course, Campbell said his Lions are better now, too.

Yea O’l Dan is out there doing damage control to make up for his safety’s comments earlier.

David is having a meltdown right about now. His pants are wet.

It’s hard for me to warm to anybody with the stench of N.O., “Bountygate” and Chris Godwin’s knee in any way associated with them.

I realize my vitriol should be directed at the turd responsible…Sean Payton…watching him get humiliated to start the year in Denver was incredibly enjoyable.

I give Campbell credit. He did the class thing. I just hope his DB’s don’t go all cheap shot on our WR’s or his DL are not going to get “too cheap” in their shots on Baker. NO late hits!!!

  4. Show Me the TDs Says:

Don’t listen to him Baker! Dan Campbell thinks you stink!! Lol

  5. Popcorn Mike Says:

For the Bucs I think Mayfield is doing good. I think if Mayfield can put together a 3 or 4 game streak where he plays well or consistent there will stop being doubt. I really want to see what kind of a contract the Bucs offer him

  6. TheRamdog Says:

Nah Dan is a straight shooter he isn’t doing damage control. Unfortunately, safeties or anyone can say whatever they want a lot of people I think underestimate Baker you can see it on the sports talk shows everywhere. I remember before the season I was arguing with a buddy of mine who is a Rams fan.

I said man Baker had some good years in Cleveland and I remembered that game where he went up to KC and gave them all they could handle and that was the year KC won their first Superbowl. If not for a few bad calls they could’ve won the game.

Of course, everyone talks about the rest of the team and how great they are when they look back to Cleveland and they name all the QBs better than Baker. Well, I tell you what for his first year in an offense he is doing pretty darn good and I would say he is a top 15 QB and has that clutch gene where when the game is on the line he plays better and can make all the throws. Just look at the Texans game and a few other games when he made some crucial completions to lock up the game.

Also he is a rare QB that pressure and getting hit have no impact on him. He was sacked 4 times by the Eagles and 5 times by the Packers and those were some of his best games.

I think hitting him actually pisses him off more their strategy should be to leave him alone maybe – LOL.

Regardless no matter what happens this year. We need to sign him, Evans, Wirfs, and Winfield Jr. maybe draft a developmental QB but try to build up the O-Line, and D-Line and get a superfast LB like Derrick Brooks. I don’t know if people realize old DB ran a 4.35 at the combine. That is sick. Speed kills you know would be nice to find an LB with instincts and coverage skills that can run like the wind. Oh and we need some more DBs too but Licht and Bowles and doing a good job I think and I trust them.

At least we have a kicker, knock on wood, that is like Licht’s cryptonite you know he seems to like to waste draft picks on them – LOL.

Baker has been incredibly consistent, as most QBs with his TD-INT ratio have been. He only had one game with an INT and no TD. It was Detroit, but I’ll bet he does much better this time.

If they win again, Baker is the story of the year in the NFL, pretty much. Why some folks, even fans of the Bucs, can’t stand him is a psychological mystery.

Can’t wait until he starts back up on the TV commercials. Then we can watch him no matter who’s playing, LOL.

  8. Jack Sparrow Says:

The LIONS says Bucs are lucky to defeat a struggling Eagles team and they say they’ll show them what a real football team looks like……. Take that BUCS!!!

  9. Onetrickpony Says:

Why are there remarks about possibly drafting a quarterback this year? Is it possible they will get rid of Trask , for these comments?

  10. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Somebody needs to flatten Kerby Joseph. He likes hitting TE’s in the knees. Be a shame if he caught a knee to the chin and got his bell rang

  11. Marky Mark Says:

Smart coach. Dont diss a guy to motivate them.

  12. Jack Clark Says:

I’m sure any head coach would be a fan of Baker Mayfield if they were playing against him 😂

  13. Popcorn Mike Says:

All I want to see is consistency for Mayfield and the defense up in Detroit, play like they played against Jacksonville and Philly and we’re sure to be in the title game. I’ve watched several of Detroit games this year and the are beatable

    Go Bucs

Campbell tells it like it is ‘Man’ and the team has bought in and you can tell it by the way the end a sentence in an interview ‘Man’

He’d tell the Safety ‘you took the sh@t go clean it up or back up your words’

  16. RustyRhinos Says:

I agree with you Stpete! “I just hope his DB’s don’t go all cheap shot on our WR’s or his DL are not going to get “too cheap” in their shots on Baker.” If this happens, and no flag(s), we instantly fight fire with fire. Make them regret their foolishness.

We need to come out of the tunnel and hit the Lions right in the mouth, again and again and again. They want to do the same thing to us, I am sure. Going to be a good game!

    GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!

  17. RustyRhinos Says:

Hey Jack Clark, “I’m sure any head coach would be a fan of Baker Mayfield if they were playing against him”

How much do you think Nick Sirianni is a fan of Mayfield? We just played them right? Do you still think Nick is a fan of Mayfield?

What a pathetic person you are, The Bucs are in the 2nd round of the playoffs, we are 1-0 heading to Detroit. You just have to say something bitter, degrading, or like this post above just plain bitter BS!!

    GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!

  18. infomeplease Says:

Detroit will be a tough team Sunday. The Bucs have been getting tough too. If the Bucs on both sides of the line bring their A game, like they did on Monday and at Green Bay, they will be in this game and can come away with a W! LFG!!!!

  19. BakerFan Says:

Baker Haters Hate and they don’t even know why.

Team mates love him, every where he goes. Just win baby and let the haters stew in their own $hit

  20. Buc4evr Says:

Baloney, stupid coach speak. Nobody is buying what he is saying.

  21. orlbucfan Says:

I agree RustyRhinos, stpete, and Ramdog. Watch out for the cheap shots and da## refs. With all the NOLA clowns Campbell brought to Detroit, the cheap shots will start. Go get them, Bucs!!!

  22. Tbbucs3 Says:

“ Baker Haters Hate and they don’t even know why”

Its all because of gator nation. If Trask didnt wear an orange and bowl helmet in college nobody would care this much about a 3 year backup soon to be a career backup once baker is resigned.

  23. Lakeland Steve Says:

I like Dan Campbell as a coach, not sure if he is truly sincere in what he is saying or is just trying to do damage control after what CJ Gardner Johnson said. If I am not mistaken he is the one who cheap shotted Godwin and tore up Godwins knee a couple of years ago when the Bucs were playing the Saints. Hopefully Godwin gets some payback and can knock his ass out.

  24. nick houllis Says:

Big reminder for me of a Bucs/Lions game long long ago that must be retold. The year is 1981 and the lions up until week 16 had not lost at home all year. Bit of a lie there because Lions beat the Cowboys at home with winning FG w./12 men on the field (no review back then). Bucs got hot at right time but lost a home week 15 game to Dan Fouts and Company, setting up a winner take all game Bucs at Lions for the division, loser goes home. Big play of the game, lions up 7-3 ready to score again, in red zone, lions throw an interception in the end zone, Touchback. First play from 20 Doug Williams hits Kevin House on a long Bomb TD that made a scary 14-3 deficit into a 10-7 lead! later in game (RIP) David Logan recovered a fumble caused by Lee Roy Salmon, and ran it back for a score; Bucs were crowned NFC Central Champs, 2nd in 3 years, and only 5 years after 0-26. Go Bucs, repeat history!

  25. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

MCDC is a good coach. Lions are screwed because they just played their Super Bowl. They’re gonna come out flatter than yesterdays beer

  26. dbbuc711 Says:

I’m waiting for the Progressive commercial where Baker wakes up in the pirate ship then goes out on the deck and looks around 😁

  27. Florida Rocks 77 Says:

Right now I think there are a lot of big fans of Baker Mayfield. Like the Steelers front office, the Jets front office, the Giants front office, the Patriots front office, yeah lots and lots of fans. Remember it is not up to the Bucs if Baker comes back it’s up to Baker. I would love to see him in that pirate ship commercial next year.

  28. Gipper Says:

Dan Campbell doesn’t know what he is talking about, just another Mayfield “fan bois.” Good thing we have Rod Munch, David, NEFan and DavidBigBuc99 and the rest around to straighten Campbell out about how lousy our “journeyman”, QB Mayfield really is.

Save the nonsense that “Campbell has to say this…..” Unbelievable as we enter the shadow of the Detroit game we still have this contingent of nobodies taking shots at our QB Mayfield.
