Let his wheels take over.
Yes, Joe understands the Bucs drafted a gifted receiver, Jalen McMillan, in the third round. Just based on that investment, one could guess he’ll get on the field a bunch this season.
Joe, however, is not giving up on second-year receiver Trey Palmer. No way.
Last year Palmer was used mainly to take the top off defenses. He had some successess and misses.
Joe has made a big deal of late of how Palmer was the quickest receiver to start his routes in the NFL. Yes, quicker than Cheetah Hill, per NextGen Stats, which uses GPS sensors embedded in players’ equipment.
Joe believes this sets up for Palmer to catch short passes since he potentially is open that quickly, and to let his wheels take over. His January touchdown against the Eagles (see below) in the playoffs is a perfect example.
If Palmer can get the ball early in his route, defenses will have to shade more coverage to him. That, of course, could loosen up coverage for Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.
Joe knows how that usually works out. 🙂

Ah ha, that’s how you turn a 6 yard catch into a 56 yard score. Looking forward to seeing Palmer in the preseason, I’ve heard tidbits of some really good developments as route runner and harnessing his speed.

I’ve heard Palmer has made “strides” in bettering himself as a route runner, and is coming around to harnessing his speed to get in/out of breaks. With his speed that sounds exciting to me, but necessary because JMac is on thee way.

Mike was there, but he did not need the block. That said they should design some of those plays where mike can either block or pick someone to open a lane.

He has the potential to be a game breaker, just needs some easy catches like that one to gain confidence. Also Mayfield and him should develop better chemistry.
There were some big plays they left out on the field last season because Mayfield didn’t spot the ball in the right place for him to catch or Palmer miffed on the catch. That is a confidence thing.
Coach him up, he is a kid that can be used the way Gruden used Joey Galloway
when he was here. Palmer isn’t in Galloway’s class by any means but he can be that kind of player with coaching.

I’m a big fan of Palmer. I expect him to contribute a great deal this season.

I like Palmer a lot. High points the football and had a few contested catches – mainly the one in preseason I’m remembering lol but still. Year 2 Palmer + Year 1 McMillan = best WR depth we’ve had in a while.
Both can get a lot of chances to make plays if Coen is going to run 3 WR sets the vast majority of the time.

I think the entire offense has a higher ceiling than we saw last year. Canales might have been a great communicator but he was pitiful at scheming players to their strengths as well as to the opposing teams weaknesses.

3 WR sets? how about 4 Wr sets. RPO and 5 WRs. lol. The Bucs have the WR talent to do it this year. Hope Coen gets serious about scoring points and utilizing the WRs more fully.

I agree with Joe, Trey has some great speed related numbers. Trey was a good contributor, especially as a 6th round pick. He has definite areas of improvement such as his drops (9% of catchable balls) and fumbles (6% of touches) which are the highest in the WR/RB group. With the exception of Godwin, all our WR’s need to block better in the run game.

I haven’t given up on him, either. There are 6 or 7 guys who COULD step it up for the Bucs on offense this year, hopefully all/most of them do.

“best WR depth we’ve had in a while”
It wasn’t too long ago that Antonio Brown was the Bucs WR3. Scotty Miller and Tyler Johnson were adequate WR4/5s.

This year’s offense may look similar to Miami’s in that we may see multiple players making big plays week in and week out! September should be fun 😊.

I think it’s safe to say his second year will be better than his first. That first year was pretty good, but inconsistent.

I think Palmer is going to be great and now he’s got to feed off of Mike, Chris, and even McMillan. You gotta just put him on the field with Trask and go deep. When we needed him the most in a few big games at the end of the season, he made the catch!!!

Palmer really lit the afterburners up on that play. I shake my head thinking about how Canales didn’t use him effectively enough. That and slamming the ball up in the middle of the line which was judged the weakest part of the line makes me wonder why everyone thinks he was such an offensive wiz.

All NFL teams believe they have their best WR depth. Checking out national publications best WR teams. One has the Bucs at #7 and others didn’t even mention the Bucs in their top 10 teams. I’d put the Bucs between 5-7. My point is that lately the drafts have been chalked full of great WRs so all the teams are improving at WR. The Bucs have a strong group but relatively probably not any better than they’ve had the last 5 years. Their depth 3-5 is better but so are others.

Palmer and McMillan will both get plenty of work outside opposite of Evans with Godwin playing mostly in the slot this season.

I can recall two drops that were headed to “ the house” by Trey last year. One in Indy, the other, ..saints? Hope his hands get better.

I may be wrong but didn’t they try the short pass thing with Palmer early last year? Preseason and early in the regular season. It was a fail.
Not sure why though, because the whole offense was so disjointed and out of sync. Maybe worth another look because if he gets loose in the secondary “He…May…Go…All…The…Way” Said in My best Chris Berman voice.
