Baker Mayfield Sits Out Early In Practice

Not practicing.
So the Bucs hit the practice fields outside of One Buc Palace today and there was a notable player who wasn’t between the white lines.
That would be Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield.
The Bucs’ starting signal-caller has been beat to hell the past two weeks suffering hurt ribs and an injured ankle. He could barely walk off the field last Sunday in Carolina.
The way Mayfield threw on Sunday, one could argue he had no business being on the field, risking himself for the playoffs. But here we are.
Joe’s good friend Rock Riley decided to hit up One Buc Palace this morning to shoot video during the 30-minute warmup session that the pen and mic club is allowed to view. Riley noticed no Mayfield throwing passes.
Of course, none of this would have mattered if the Bucs took the slimy Saints game seriously two Sundays ago. That’s what happens when a team shows up unfocused or unmotivated. If the Bucs took care of business that day, an injured quarterback like Mayfield could have had a full two weeks to heal up for the playoffs.

Nobody is trying to tackle him in practice. He “practiced” last week and look what he did on gameday. Bowles and crew absolutely knew during the week that he couldn’t make the throws, but it didn’t matter. If Baker tells Bowles he’s starting, Bowles will say OK.

It’s a Monday game, he can afford the extra rest day and still in get some practice time later. He absolutely needs to practice though. He’s not the kind of QB who can sit out the weak and then go be accurate and have good timing during a game. If they go that route and sit him all week before starting him against the Eagles – they’ll lose and the offense won’t be remotely competitive. Which sucks because the morons here will blame Bowles for not starting the Trash can man.

We’re in a weird place right now. We really have nothing to lose, come on, no way we think that there is any reason we will make a deep run in the playoffs and even a beat up Eagles team will give us everything we can handle.
I’ve been itching to see the big arm 6’5″ Trask in this offense, but perhaps Wolford and his game experience and someone more familiar with this offense might give us the best chance to compete if Baker can’t go. Preseason is such a ruse, but Wolford looked really good when he took snaps during the preseason games. I dunno, Brady, Rodgers, Mahomes, these are guys that at 75% are better than most at 100%, Baker is not one of those guys in my opinion. I don’t care if he wants to be a hero. Baker is a one trick pony, and when his arm goes, or his accuracy and push go because he’s too banged up, his legs will not make up the difference. Again, we have nothing to lose here, might be a surprise to the Eagles who don’t have a lot of game film on either of these QBs.

This is terrifying news for Bowles, Joe, Ira, and the Bucs media hype machine that sold us on Baker. They’re terrified of Trask playing, lighting it up, and exposing them for their gross incompetence at quarterback evaluation – if not their outright fraud in concealing the starting job promise that was made to Baker when he signed.

He is going to play. It was always going to come down to if he plays well or not. He has many financial reasons to play hurt and well on Monday. We werent supposed to be in this position, and we have no business beating the Eagles, but here we are playing with house money. Baker fans just project all day man. He didn’t play well vs the Panthers. Honestly, what part of that game inspired confidence in the offense? Even Tristian Wirfs called out the offenses performance over the last two games post Panthers. Baker was awful and handicapped the offense. Are we really going to sit here and act like Trask or Wolford couldn’t score 9 points and get the W when the team pitched a shutout? Baker with his injuries might be the worst QB on the roster right now. If he was healthy it would be different. Other than the Texans, Titans, Packers, and Jaguars game, can anyone point to me where he played like a franchise QB post bye week? Why is there such an arrogant defense over somone that played well in just 4 of his last 13 games? And why is there such a hatred towards a player that only played a couple snaps with the starters in his whole career? No one knows what Trask is. He’s likely a backup sure but there is no real film with the starters to judge him off of. They are all Bucs, and if Baker plays I’m pulling for him, but it’s looking like he isn’t going to be the best option this week. Eagles got a weak pass defense and its a home game. Its set up for the QB to play well and get the ball to one of the best WR duos in the league. And if it is another QB playing we should all pull for the him to help get the team the W.

Baker healthy is a better scrambler than Trask. Baker can’t scramble then go with Trask or Wolford. I liked Trask at UF but I think Baker was better at scrambling considering our Oline in the beginning of the season. The Oline is better and if Baker can’t move or will go down in a single hit then have Trask or Wolford start. Yes Baker is tough but his advantage is gone if he can’t move and it’s dangerous if he can easily be hurt. Trask or Wolford need more practice and if Baker starts, I don’t think he can last the whole game.

SteveK: If you really are on this site often (I’m doubtful of that), then you must have read my MANY comments about Baker’s stats since he came into the League in 2018. And also take a look at highlights of him playing and tell me that he’s only average. What a joke! Don’t be rediculous.
The thing I do know is that Baker beat Trask in Training camp and that the Bucs would never had signed Baker if they thought that Trask was their guy. Trask was a reach in the 2nd round. Heck, he didn’t even suit up for games his first few years. So who are we kidding?

I see deficiencies, inconsistencies, & batted balls in Captain Average’s skillset every game. Bucs have no consistency in moving the football. Too many 3 & outs this year…
Yeah, Baker plays with guts & moxie, and he has some mobility, but he doesn’t pass the eye test to me. I wanted him to succeed this year, but having consistency is vital..
Mayfield would be a TOP back-up QB….
I wanna see what Trask looks like and if he passes the eye-test and can move the offense. If he can’t then it sure as hell helps Licht & Bucs management out with looking at drafting a QB next year. It helps to answer questions…..

He’s what we got for now, and if he can win a home playoff game on Sunday I’d be interested for next year. Not long term. If another team wants him bad and wants to pay him, then so be it.

The issue is you could say that about may of his starts this season.
Hopefully we get to the good Baker that will occasionally show up, in particular when you play very bad pass defenses, since the Eagles are a very bad pass defense.
If Baker can do that, have the game of his life and beat the Eagles in a home playoff game, then he’ll finally start to turn around the national image of him being a bust and a failure. Go out and prove it on the big stage, in the playoffs, and he can rehab his image, make some huge money, and most importantly win the Bucs the game.

The defense finished 7th in points allowed.
If the offense had a much more consistent QB that gave you ‘good’ games more than 30% of his starts, the offense would look a lot better.
I think Bowles is back for sure next year, short of the Bucs getting someone like Harbaugh.
As for Baker, I think his future here is pretty much all dependant on this game. You can’t finish the season with three duds in a row with everything on the line. But if he can play well, then he’ll come back.
Not sure why that triggers the Baker Bois. If they think he’s a franchise QB that they compare to Brady, Brees and Mahomes, they should have total faith in him performing well on the big stage, with everything on the line.

He’ll be fine. I’ve been screaming for them to draft Daniels most of the year, but I am all in with Mayfield now. The more I thought about it, the more I realize he has not reached a ceiling, not even close. The guy has had new offenses, new OCs, new head coaches every single year. Some better line play and let him actually stay in the system for a while, I am on board.

I’m a Noles fan that just wants to see what Trask can do with the ones. From what I can tell most that are “Traskies” or “cult members” feel the same way. They just want to see what he can do with the ones. He was drafted in the 2nd round for a reason.
No one has been saying bench Baker all season. NO ONE. Surely if there was an actual “cult” this would be happening all season on theses boards and it just hasn’t. There is no cult….just a few peeps that want to see Trask get a shot.

The injury thing is being pumped up by the Traskidiots. Baker looked good throwing the ball. Palmer and Evans dropped easy catches. Bryce was healthy and his stats were worse.The issue was familiarity. Both defenses have lots of tape. They won, we have a good kicker. Stop complaining.

Kidflo, yes I think it’s realistic to think the Trask could throw for more the 130 yards in a football game. Throwing to two elite receivers, Mayfield struggles to complete passes beyond ten yards. That’s not good football, easy to have a good QBR dumping the ball off on easier short dink and dunk throws.

How’s he going to be in sync with his receivers? His regular season NFL stats in 2 years is 3-10 23 yards. Coaches watch him every day and they decided a very banged up Baker was better than Trask playing last Sunday.
