Carlos Brown “Has Looked Very, Very Good”

Pressed to name a positive surprise in training camp, veteran Bucs beat scribe Woody Cummings, of The Tampa Tribune, was quick to evoke the name of Carlos Brown during an interview on The King David Show on WQYK-AM today.
Who?
Brown is a rookie free agent out of Michigan who rushed for 22 yards on four carries against the Dolphins’ third and fourth teamers on Saturday. The Bucs picked him up last week.
“They liked him out of Michigan,” Cummings said. “This guy, in training camp at least, on the practice field, has looked very, very good. Now I don’t think this is a guy that’s going to take a roster spot. Maybe Derrick Ward has something to do with that. Maybe if Derrick Ward suddenly gets cut; I’m not saying that’s going to happen. Maybe something opens up.
“I think the Buccaneers are looking at this guy as a practice squad guy.”
It’s fun to root for these off-the-street guys, but Brown;s odds are so slim on this Bucs team. Heck, Kareem Huggins’ odds are slim, and he was the “driving force of our football team” last year.

Joe here – Huggins was out of football in 2008. Bucs practice squad for most of the year in 2009. He’s 24.

I disagree about Huggins being slim with his chances. If he keeps it up and Ward keeps whining and making excuses then the heck with what their salaries are: play the best men. That would mean Caddy & Huggins would be the 1-2 punch.
I agree that Brown is a practice squad guy at this point. See how he improves and maybe he makes it next year as Ward says bye-bye.

i know this is close to crossing the thin line of blasphemy, but the way kareem huggins moves and looks i cant help but to compare him to mjd. They both run like they are bigger than thery are, they both run like they have chips on their shoulder. I am strting to jump on the kareem huggins bandwAGON. SLEEPER ALERT FOR FANTASY

Nice to see that Brown is doing so well. But unless something dramatic happens, I don’t see him making a big impact on the Buc’s this season.

Joe are you high? Kareem’s chances are slim? He is as much of a lock on the roster as Caddy right now. Rah wants him to run with the first unit this week. There is buzz all around this guy, its not fabricated to only bucs fans. Go read rotoworld, or anyone on top of player updates.

Kareem’s chances are pretty slim as the No. 4 running back on a team that has issues at wide receiver. And will Kareem even be activated on gamedays with Ward, Caddy, Smith and Graham who might get some looks? He’s never run with the first team before. Please

Travis – Wake up, please. There was lots of buzz around Huggins’ play last preseason, then the Bucs cut him, then the entire NFL passed on him before he hit the BUcs practice squad. …Huggins is a great story, but you have to be realistic with his odds of making the team. It’ll be important to see what he does on special teams on Saturday. He’s got to be more valuable then a No. 3 running back to have great odds of making the roster.

The Bucs intend to give second-year RB Kareem Huggins work with the first-team offense in Saturday’s preseason tilt with the Chiefs.
In a matter of weeks, Huggins has leaped from worthwhile deep Dynasty stash to a serious re-draft sleeper. He had 55 yards on eight carries in the exhibition opener. Cadillac Williams is going to keep the starting job, but Huggins could make it a near-even timeshare with continued explosive play.

+The bucs have been shopping Peanut, and the Giants are very interested, since losing their return man Adam Jennings
That leaves us with 1 solid RB Caddy.

Joe here – Travis, this is all very nice, but Ward isn’t on the chopping block. And what team is realistically going to take Peanut before he proves he’s past the concussions? The Bucs are in no position to be shopping Pro Bowl caliber players anyway.
And this stuff from the Times is just a bunch of exaggerated blabber. Look for Huggins to get two carries maybe with the first team, and then run through the second half.

taking the age, contracts, and durability concerns into consideration regarding our current stable of running backs you had better beleive that they’re going to take a good look at huggins this year.

Sorry, but methinks you’re wrong about Ward. Why pay a guy multi-M$ when he has done nothing during the past season and the current pre-season (including camp). Ward has gotten too fat, happy and slow. Ward is Michael Clayton’s brother … separated at birth. But, unlike Clayton, he has been a whiner since he got here. Huggins is a much better “change of pace” back and the Bucs can always use Earnest Graham between the tackles just like they have in the past. I’m not saying Ward won’t make the roster because they may keep him as insurance behind C. Williams. Actually, I see Clifton Smith as the odd man out. But I would be willing to bet that as the season goes on … Huggins will get more carries than Ward.
