“Too Hyped Up And Overhyped”
January 3rd, 2024Odd take from Todd Bowles yesterday.
Obviously, Sunday’s performance against the slimy Saints was a huge disappointment for a Bucs team coming home on a four-game winning streak — against a division rival with the postseason on the line.
The Bucs laid a rotten egg.
Bowles was asked on the Buccaneers Radio Network what surprised him about the showing.
“I think the start of the game surprised me,” Bowles said. “I thought we were maybe too hyped up and overhyped — other than that we didn’t play well. You know, bottom line, we didn’t play well. No excuses needed for a game to clinch the division.”
Um, “too hyped?” That didn’t show up on the field that Joe could see. The Bucs lost too often in the trenches and surely didn’t like an overhyped team playing smashmouth football. Joe believes the Bucs looked more like they were coasting. Bowles even added that he thought his defense played faster in the second half.
The bad start, per Bowles, came after the Bucs had a “great week of practice” with “great focus.”
Joe gets that teams in any sport — at any level — can be hard to read. But Joe almost feels like Bowles is misreading his team after the fact, which is somewhat troubling.

I have had enough of him.

I say hire the OC as HC next year. Dave could not be any worse and the coaching would get younger with the team
January 3rd, 2024 at 11:38 am
There’s more to worry about than if Bowles is reading the team correctly… plus he is not going to be candid in his responses. So you have to take whatever a coach says 95% b.s.
January 3rd, 2024 at 11:38 am
Bowles is now 42 wins and 58 losses for his career. He is what he is, A below average Coach. Its time to move on.
January 3rd, 2024 at 11:55 am
Saints did a good job covering Evans and Godwin through 3/4 of the game- Mayfield and Palmer need to work on their chemistry and trust factor because Palmer is open deep when the other 2 are double covered.
Otton did not have a good game and Mayfield hesitated too much on his reads.
Barrett being out hurt the DLine pressure and Kancey had his worst game.
January 3rd, 2024 at 12:02 pm
The man is in over his head. He is not qualified for the position. Observe Todd Bowles and compare him to a person running a small business with 53 employees. I tried to rationalize and justify his qualifications as a head coach based on his experience in the game of football. That is not the correct analyzation. He lacks communication skills. He lacks personnel management skills. He avoids taking responsibility. He told us all everything we need to know when he said his coaches needed to have better game plans. To use parlance he would understand; DUDE, YOU ARE THE BOSS IN CHARGE. You ain’t doin’ the job and don’t appear as though you can.
January 3rd, 2024 at 12:06 pm
The defense let the Saints Drive 80 yards and take up 8 minutes of the first quarter. It was all down hill after that. Even when the D did stop the Saints it wasn’t until they had several first downs and were able to pin the Bucs back field position wise. Now the offense didn’t do any better! You shouldn’t win any games turning the ball over 4 times.
January 3rd, 2024 at 12:06 pm
Dude is talking gibberish.
January 3rd, 2024 at 12:12 pm
I am not a smart man Jenny but I know the difference between dazed and hyped up.
January 3rd, 2024 at 12:18 pm
I just watched his press conference. First, why can’t they get the reporters mic’d up so we can hear the questions? Second, some of the questions asked are so ambiguous…and hard to answer. Maybe it is just me.
January 3rd, 2024 at 12:19 pm
If the Bucs fired Dungy who rebuilt the roster into a winner…..Bowles is certainly on the hot seat even with a playoff spot. He’s got to produce a win at home….thats the bar for him. Another one & done blowout and he’ll be out. Glaziers notice attendance is off, season ticket waiting list are declining, etc….Bowles does nothing to generate interest, his record is mediocre, the style of football is mostly boring/frustrating to watch, his interviews will put you to sleep….We had a home game in the playoffs and this team looked unprepared. Fast forward to last Sunday, big game to win the division and we get slapped around by another avg team in our own stadium. Bowles teams regularly fold when it counts the most. He’s just not the guy.
January 3rd, 2024 at 12:23 pm
I think Bowles meant that the team bought into the media hype that the Bucs were surging, thereby failing to bring intensity and focus.
January 3rd, 2024 at 12:27 pm
Anyone holding on to hope that the Bowel Movement will say something that make sense is headed toward insanity.
January 3rd, 2024 at 12:28 pm
Quite frankly and in retrospect the Glazers made a mistake in choosing Bowles over Lefty. Don’t freak out ! Those who have read my posts know how I feel about the former OC and the Kangol Hat. It’s becoming even more clear to me that the temper tantrum and sabotage was real and a result of that decision. BA’s abrupt retirement was by design. In no way am I justifying the actions of either man. I won’t belabor in this post but the impending decision the Glazers face is a big one and I have no confidence in them to make the correct one.

Has he ever said that we practiced poorly during the week?
January 3rd, 2024 at 12:33 pm
Perhaps (not defending him at all here, just trying to understand) he was talking about the days leading up to the Playoff, Division Rival, Biggest game if the year (which it was) maybe too excited Saturday/Sunday morning. The Buccaneers have a TON of young players on this team, they need to mature quickly.

Good job Joes, a gigantic softball for the Bowles haters… let him have it boys!
January 3rd, 2024 at 12:44 pm
@Mik C…stop it, that’s not how these comments work….if you don’t have anything negative to say about Bowles, then wait for another article to drop.
January 3rd, 2024 at 12:47 pm
I don’t want to be viewed as a Bowles “hater”. I don’t hate anyone. I bent over backwards defending Bowles early in the year. I gave him every chance. I made no posts here for weeks during all the losing. He is not competent as a head coach. It is as simple as that.
January 3rd, 2024 at 12:48 pm
The Stinky Saints started with much more fire than the Bucs. Bowles couldn’t inspire an energizer bunny.
January 3rd, 2024 at 12:49 pm
The coach is overrated.
January 3rd, 2024 at 1:33 pm
Zoocomics … ‘Good job Joes, a gigantic softball for the Bowles haters… let him have it boys!’
Another instance of the media feeding the lions? The media (yes, including JoeBucsFan) have made Sunday’s loss too much about Bowles. Yes he’s the head coach, but all of those players who participated in the loss are highly-paid professionals. And quite frankly, most of them stunk up the joint.
And yes, for all the Mayfield lovers, that included Baker. A QB is supposed to be the offense’s field general. If a team is flat, it’s his job to give them a good kick in the arse & get them moving. We saw that constantly from the greats like Brady, Brees, etc.
Didn’t see it Sunday from Baker at all. Bucs had 12 drives on the day, and only 3 of them had more than 5 plays. We ran 50 plays in those 12 drives, barely 4 plays per drive average. Bucs were a lowly 2-for-8 on 3rd down conversions, and guess what, a 25% conversion rate when your team gives the ball away FOUR times won’t win many games. We only ran it once on 3rd down (failed to make the 1st down), and Baker was 2-for-7 on 3rd down passing attempts.
So our offense’s inability to sustain drives looks to be directly related to our inability to convert on 3rd downs by passing. A big part of that BTW had to do with having far too many 3rd-and-longs to convert (a continuing problem).

Win and we get a playoff party, lose and we get a new coach. Win win
January 3rd, 2024 at 3:26 pm
I agree DR that when you only give your RB 11 carries you aren’t winning anything. Especially when he fumbles on one of the 11.
The announcers kept saying it has to come from Baker passing, but a long sustained drive in the 3rd was totally still doable.
Run the ball twice for 2 yards and that 3rd and 6 is still WAAAY better than the 3rd and 9 or 10 which we faced all day. You can’t pass the ball downfield against a 2 high shell, but don’t tell Tampa that.
Add in a hesitant QB because of pressure and you are gonna get what we watched.
For anyone who watched the 0-9 defeat against NO last year, it brought back memories. Same style of game and same result doing and trying the same thing.
If we only score 13 points against Carolina, we lose. Period.
January 3rd, 2024 at 3:34 pm
We average 331 yds a game and give up 372. If anyone thinks that is playoff football, raise your hand!!!!
This team will NEVER compete with Todd Bowels running it. Giving up an average of 3 more first downs a game is troubling. This isn’t anywhere close to a championship level defense and THAT is squatting on BOWLES.
This guy can’t even run a unit, much less a team!!!!
But please keep playing a soft zone Bowles.
I want a different HC anyway.
Coming at the expense of a young team is the problem.
He is ruining the attitude of this team long term.
Bowles can continue his staring contest with a rock somewhere else!!!!!!!
January 3rd, 2024 at 4:42 pm
Misreading his team. Misleading the fans. What a moron.
January 3rd, 2024 at 5:02 pm
BillyBucco … ‘This isn’t anywhere close to a championship level defense and THAT is squatting on BOWLES.’
THAT’S what’s bugged me all year. it was HIS CHOICE to wear 2 hats, and he’s not doing either of them particularly well IMO. To be fair though, I’ll cut him some slack for having so many new guys to develop this year, but the reality is that it’s not the new players who are letting us down.
Just looking at the defense, over half of the starters are having meh years (and I’m trying to be kind) …
1 – Ryan Neal (some of the worst safety play I can remember)
2 – Carlton Davis (only played in 11 of our 16 games & is allowing the highest completion percentage & yards/target in his 6-year career)
3 – Jamel Dean (only played in 12 games & is allowing the highest completion percentage & yards/target in his 5-year career)
4 – Shaq Barrett (4.5 sacks, 3 TFLs & 9 QB Hits in 15 games is very un-Shaq-like production)
5 – Vita Vea (started off nice with 3.5 sacks in first 4 games, but cooled off quickly with 2 sacks in next 11 games, plus his 61% availability is far too low for such a highly-paid DT)
6 – Joe Tryon-Shoyinka (also started off nice with 2 sacks in first 2 games, but then his production fell off a cliff with only 2 sacks in next 14 games, not to mention 6 QB Hits in 16 games)
7 – Greg Gaines (I had such high hopes for him replacing Hicks, but 1 sack in 16 games, plus 0 TFLs & only 5 QB Hits doesn’t show me much)
8 – Logan Hall (I can’t figure out what’s going on with him; 0.5 sacks in 15 games, 2 TFLs & 1 QB Hit … really?)
9 – Will Gholston (granted that Big Will has only played in a quarter of our def snaps in 15 games, but total goose-eggs … 0 sacks, 0 TFLs & 0 QB Hits … is mind boggling)
10 – Devin White (his year’s been so bad he’s actually played himself out of a starting role; 2.5 sacks in 13 games, with 4 TFL & 8 QB Hits is definitely underwhelming compared to his earlier years)
On the good news side, there’s Lavonte David & Antoine Winfield, both having awesome years. And most of our rookie defenders are at least holding their own IMO. Todd Bowles hasn’t helped his cause by trying to be both a HC & DC, but he’s still not the one out on the field playing the game. The veterans, exclusive of LVD & Winfield, have really let this defense down IMO.

Another “it’s inexplicable” from Bowles!
January 3rd, 2024 at 9:07 pm
“Too hyped”
“Overhyped”
“We came out flat”
“We didn’t get bullied”
“There was a good effort”
How does anyone put any stock into anything the Toilet Bowles says? He’s either clueless or full of s(p)it. Many times, it’s both.
January 3rd, 2024 at 10:15 pm
Let’s agree Bowles comes across as a straight shooter. He sees the team from a view we don’t see. I’ve been on teams where “ overhyped “ feel is real. It’s not fluid. It’s forced. Robotic. Wooden. Perhaps this is what he’s referring to. Over thinking the consequences of the result, and thus, affecting play. He could ve simply avoided the question, but chose to share his thoughts. Give the man a break.
January 4th, 2024 at 4:14 am
I think he is looking for any port in storm on this one….Yeah that sounds half way plausible…. lets give them that excuse.
Wow! That one is cringe worthy!
Go Bucs!

How can you call a walk through a great week of practice? What practice? They don’t line up, and hit, or nothing like the Saints did preparing for us. Your an idiot for saying you did something well all week when you really just got treatment, and watched film. Ending with a great walk trough. Just stop Todd.
