Rooting For The Falcons

December 31st, 2023

Falcons owner Arthur Blank.

Joe will be one heck of a Falcons fan today when Atlanta kicks off against Chicago at 1 o’clock.

At 7-8 in the NFC South, Falcons head coach Arthur Smith probably needs a win today to keep his job, plus a win in Atlanta’s season finale at New Orleans. For now, the Falcons are alive in the Wild Card hunt, owning a tiebreaker edge with the Saints.

Simply stated, Joe wants Smith to keep his job — because he’s not very good at it.

Also, Joe doesn’t want Falcons owner Arthur Blank to start thinking his team could win a division title if it hires Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales has head coach and signs Baker Mayfield in free agency as a package deal.

The Falcons defense is very solid, and Canales is the kind of young coach that would have no problem taking a head coaching gig and being told it comes with a built-in defensive staff.

Joe can only imagine past discussions at Falcons headquarters surrounding the Bucs thriving with Mayfield while the Falcons paid more money for Taylor Heinicke to be dismal Desmond Ridder’s backup.

Win out, Coach Smith!

Can’t do it Joe. Here’s to hoping both Atlanta and New Orleans loose today. Your reasoning and logic seem pretty flimsy on this topic…nothing personal.

  2. Winny Testaverde Says:

Excellent point(s), Joe. We want Team Arthur to stay together. Lots of history with The McKay defection in ‘03. Keep
    The sub-par “leadership” in place.

    Good Grief!!

  4. Curse of Gruden Says:

    Joe’s working all the angles!

  5. Usedtocould Says:

I like it, but I’m wishing for best case scenario: they lose out and hire lovie.

  6. Alanbucsfan Says:

If Bucs want to keep Canales , they can upgrade his title and salary to where leaving to be a low paid 1st year head coach somewhere else is unattractive.

  7. Jason m Says:

Lol this is hilarious. If they fire smith then they must like promote their DC.

  8. Alanbucsfan Says:

Also, the Bucs hired Canales a month before they signed Mayfield-Canales is all in on Mayfield.

Nope. All NFC South teams should lose every week or tie if they play each other, excluding the Bucs of course, who should win every week!

  10. SB~LV Says:

    Grrrr…
I remember when Rich McKay quit the Bucs one week and the very next game he was Arthur Blanks guest in Blanks sky box as the Falcons beat the Bucs at home

  11. Buc1987 Says:

No Joe I can’t root for the Falcons.

  12. Defense Rules Says:

Kinda convoluted thinking isn’t it Joe? You want the Falcons to do good this year so that they’ll not fire their head coach, resulting in them doing poorly next year. Got it.

Surely a billionaire owner like Arthur Blank will unwittingly follow a logic trail like that after you break it down for him Joe. Or not.

  13. StickinUp4Centers Says:

Also, worse draft picks if they win.

  14. Jack Clark Says:

Rooting for the falcons to destabilize their team by firing their head coach

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

A Falcons loss would more assure the coach’s firing…….

    F the Falcons…..

Who cares, really? I like the way these last 2 games have gone with Canales’ offense FINALLY showing some life and Baker is playing good football but I’m not under any illusion that this team is some how close to competing for a Super Bowl and that the Baker and Canales combo are the “it” factor to get us there. We still have a long way to go.

They want to bolt, so be-it. Canales still has plenty to prove in this league. It is truly amazing what 2-freaking games has done to our psyche regarding the quality of these individuals.

We blow these last 2 games, miss out on the playoffs, which no one seems to think we’re capable of, I guarantee we will be talking about who are next head coach and offensive coordinator and/or QB will be next season.

Btw, I think Canales stays no matter what. I think this guy is a bit different and he knows his limitations and I think he appreciates the staff he has. The Glazers will make sure to take care of his extension as a coordinator. I think if he knows he’s good enough that his time will eventually come as a head coach. It would be irresponsible to think that because this guy is such a great orator at the podium that he’s ready to run a football team has head coach. It’s just crazy this conversation.

Nah hope the falcons lose, and canales isn’t ready for a head coaching job and wouldn’t be wise to take one. He will stay regardless so go bears

  19. WillieG Says:

I don’t think Canales would leave to be a head coach….yet. I think he’s smart enough to realize he isn’t ready…..yet. I see him as an OC for 3 years or a Super Bowl championship, whichever comes first.

  20. RagingBrisket Says:

    This is hilarious 🤣

  21. RagingBrisket Says:

Sure the Falcons are gonna take Baker and Canales from us!😂

  22. JOgobucs Says:

    makes no sense

Do you read your articles before posting ? Canales a HC is a joke right

  25. Earl S Says:

What is going on with this team??
They might make the playoffs next week, 🤔 but it ain’t going to be pretty, but a win is a win maybe!?

  26. Oddball Says:

Well guess you don’t have to worry about DC going to Falcons now… pfft.
