Dave Canales Names His Most Improved Player

December 28th, 2023

Bucs playcaller Dave Canales.

They’re gushing at One Buc Palace.

On Sunday before the Bucs-Jaguars game it was general manager Jason Licht. After the game it was offensive coordinator Dave Canales.

Following a film review of the Bucs’ blowout win, Canales was on the Buccaneers Radio Network praising his offensive line, and he put a litte extra mustard on rookie right guard Cody Mauch.

“Cody has just developed, his details, his fundamentals, really like the most improved player that we have on our offense is Cody Mauch,” Canales said. “And it wasn’t lack of talent, it was just a matter of familiarity [and] technique.”

Unlike then-rookie left guard Luke Goedeke last season, Mauch hasn’t had many struggles. He’s found a level of consistency while he learns the pro game and transitioning from the guard position in college. It’s a beautiful thing.

Joe loves the youth across the Bucs offensive line. That kind of young-man energy could be a key in the playoffs.

This paragraph is confusing. Who is transitioning from guard? None, I thought.

  2. Weebs10 Says:

    He meant tackle

  3. Weebs10 Says:

Joe meant Mauch was a tackle in college. Can’t remember if it was left or right, but he wasn’t a guard.

  4. Fansince76 Says:

Looks like the Mauch pick was a homerun!

  5. Delusional Intelligence Says:

Might I be so bold as to suggest, he has developed even better than Cappa at this point. Practicing against Vita and Kancey will do that. Too bad it hasn’t rubbed off on Hainsey. I’m not knocking Hainsey, I just miss Ryan “Man, I love football” Jensen.

  6. Mark A Swygert Says:

He was a left tackle at South Dakota State.

  7. kaimaru Says:

    @Weebs10
    LT Cody Mauch #70 Senior 6-6 303

  8. Saskbucs Says:

Man, I don’t care to be looking ahead much yet, but if we can snag a 1st round edge, 2nd round C/G in this upcoming draft… that’s a lot of young juice in the trenches! Exactly as it should be built. Kancey, Diaby, Hall, Vea, Wirfs, Mauch, Goedeke and 2 more impact players… wooo!

  9. PbnJ Says:

Thanks weebs. I was doubly confused because I didn’t remember Mauch making a switch but I did recall Goedeke. I tried to decipher it on my own but needed help!

  10. kaimaru Says:

    @Saskbucs

I would be happy with this:

    Chris Braswell, 3-4OLB, Alabama
    Sedrick Van Pran, C Georgia

  11. Senor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

@Saskbucs: I am with you on that. 1st round is hopefully dedicated for an Edge, if one is there. And I think I agree with you on the 2nd round for a C/G. That would really build up the Oline.

  12. Bucs Guy Says:

You can get a C in the 3rd – looking at Wilson from WV, JPJ from Oregon and Van Pran from UGA. all look good, but my preference is Van Pran. DE/OLB in the 1st rd.

I would like to see the Bucs go BPA from TE from TX or FSU, S from the U or Minn or LB from Clem, KSU or IU in the 2nd and 4th. Bucs don’t have a 5th and I don’t know if they’ll get any compensatory picks. 6th and 7th round CB, WR and power RB.

Assuming we re-sign our FAs: Evans, LVD, McLaughlin, Winfield Jr and Baker. Long term deal for Wirfs. Probably need to look at G (unless they decide Stinnie is a starter), TE, S and LB positions in FA also. The good news is none of these should be big $ hits to the cap.

  13. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Pretty impressed with the way the Rookies have stepped up. They’re showing out at the end of the year, tribute to good coaching. 10-7 finish, gonna be a tough out in the playoffs or the big bowl. This team has heart and a whole lotta dawg in them. Good stuff

  14. Fred Says:

Joe, can you find another way to get more advertisements on your site?
    Didn’t think so.

  15. kaimaru Says:

    @Bucs Guy

I would like his as well, but he is projected to go late 2nd early third

  16. Duane in Sanford Says:

Another Licht special. He may be better than Kappa was at this point. Really would have loved to see these young guys play alongside Jensen on the line.

  17. Capt.Tim Says:

    Watch’em.
Cody Mauch is our best O-linemen right now. He regularly is blocking on the second level
Licht has a real talent for drafting OLinemen.
Hes gotta find 2 more this draft. A left guard and a Center.
Cant let Hainsey and Stennie handicap our offense another year.

And yes, I think Wirfs will probably be our best O-linemen next year.
    But hes not this year.

  18. Buccos Says:

Everyone on our line played tackle in college except for Stinnie. I don’t know what he played

  19. 1#bucsfan Says:

Our GM is a stud at finding Olineman. Everyone was crying about geodke or how ever you spell his name. Mauch is balling. People like to rag on D.smith but he played great during the SB season did some loafing from time to time. Marpet cappa mauch goedke hainsey has bin solid. Dude hasn’t missed a game in 2 season. Then there’s the great wirfs. Jason might not be great at getting Dlineman besides vea kancey the jury is still out even tho he looks like the real deal and yaya too. Keep picking em Jason

  20. Buccos Says:

Stinnie played left tackle in college.

  21. garro Says:

Didn’t he say basicly the same thing last week regarding Mauch?

Not that I disagree but I would put Goedeke and R White in that conversation as well.

    Go Bucs!

  22. Lakeland Steve Says:

A young offensive line and a young good defensive line mean a bright future for the Bucs. Don’t look now but Jason Licht has been hitting it out of the park the last few drafts. He may be one of the top three General Managers in the league. Obviously when you look at San Francisco and what Lynch has done and I really like what Brad Holmes has done with the Detroit Lions. All are young talented teams.

  23. Tony Marks Says:

Licht being on some people’s hate list never made much sense to me

you can’t hit on everything but he has hit in spots that made the most out of low picks and signings.

  24. orlbucfan Says:

I’m a Rich McKay punter cos of Bucs history, but Jason Licht is the best GM this team has ever had. He has always had a very good relationship with the coaches and Glazer Gang. He learned a lot about competent offense building from Dirk Koetter. Say what you want about his HC skills, but Cotter was a very good OC. Canales is filling some big shoes. Not surprised that Licht is right in the middle rebuilding the Bucs OLine. He’s learned from some of the very best. Go Bucs!!

  25. orlbucfan Says:

    *Koetter* I really hate auto-edit!

  26. Kate Says:

NORTH Dakota State!!! Go Bison! Go Cody!

  27. Crickett Baker Says:

The ads are getting very annoying to me as well. Especially those full-page ones that cover the whole screen…

  28. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Yes I am sick of dodging those GD ads don’t those ,monkeys know I wud never buy anything they clog my screen with constantly I thought we paid to have internet service I didn’t agree to put up with this BS

  29. Ed Says:

As YaYa is fastly turning into a good edge rusher with power and speed who can make plays for losses it is truly the time for Shaq Barrett to step up and improve the pass rush for the game vs the Saints.

He has been a non-factor most of the season in getting to the QB. Now is his chance to help the Bucs move up the ladder and into the tournament

Pass rush from the defensive line has been missing. David, Diaby, Winfield have been getting sacks but not Barrett. I’m rooting for him to make some impact as
the season ends and hopefully if the Bucs win the South. They need him to help out with pressure when they are not blitzing. Devin White is a lousy middle linebacker. Maybe flip things around and put him on the outside with
KJ Britt in the middle. White cannot stop the run.

  30. Grandma says Says:

Cody is a workhorse. Learned young hard work and respect. He will continue to give his best and stay humble. Love him.
