Todd Bowles Labeled As The NFL Coach Of The Year
December 20th, 2023Yes, that was Joe’s car stuck in a West Bradenton ditch this morning.
It was 9:54 a.m.
On SiriusXM NFL Radio, The33rdTeam.com website has a one-hour show usually co-hosted by former Jets and Dolphins general manager/big boss Mike Tannenbaum, who now works for ESPN.
Tannenbaum was asked to name his current NFL Coach of the Year. No hesitation … “Todd Bowles.”
That’s when Joe safely drove off the road and spent alone time in the weeds.
Tannenbaum went on to talk about how Bowles has done so much with less this season, referencing the Bucs’ $70 million in unavailable salary cap entering this season because of debt racked up during the Tom Brady era. He also talked about how Bowles and playcaller Dave Canales took Baker Mayfield from barely beating out Kyle Trask in August to his status as a quality starter peaking at the right time.
Tannenbaum isn’t saying Bowles will win the award and should, only that he’s the top dog right now.
Wow. The Bucs are 7-7 and Bowles was likely a failed fourth-down run in Atlanta from getting fired. And now he’s Coach of the Year. Joe thinks Tannenbaum has lost his mind.
However, Joe would make Bowles one of the favorites for the award if the Bucs can win out and finish 10-7. That would be a stunner of an accomplishment.
To agree with Tannenbaum is to backhandedly agree with the premise that Bucs general manager Jason Licht didn’t craft a talented roster. Joe can’t go there. The Bucs have talent.
Tannenbaum is from the tree of Hall of Fame head coach, and so is Bowles. So keep that in mind when assessing today’s stunning take. Those guys stick together. Remember, Parcells called Bowles “one of my homeboys” in 2022.
December 20th, 2023 at 12:14 pm
Yep and the media folks and the fair weathered fans wanted him gone LMAO
December 20th, 2023 at 12:18 pm
I do give Jason Licht some credit for some shopping he did at the Dollar Store along with the most recent draft and I will give the coaches credit for the development of many of the young players.
But Bowles has done nothing to deserve Coach of the Year honors. For Tannenbaum to say such a thing I suspect that Bowles has some incriminating pictures of the man.

Joe,
The higher quality crack is in Palmghetto.
😀
December 20th, 2023 at 12:23 pm
If they win out and go 10-7 He should get it as no team in NFL hIstory with 70mill in dead cap as ever won more than 5games.
December 20th, 2023 at 12:27 pm
What The f@…
December 20th, 2023 at 12:28 pm
Joe, now you’re just Fing with us. Spit up my water when I read the headline. Good one!!!
December 20th, 2023 at 12:30 pm
I can see it happening…depending on the rest of the season.
I don’t think they include post season, so if he even goes 9-7, they might do it.
To me, he doesn’t deserve it unless he gets us to the nfc championship game.
December 20th, 2023 at 12:32 pm
8-9 last year w Brady.
This year, cap strapped, no Brady, and the expectation is that he’d better win more games.
Always thought that was an unrealistic expectation.
Go Bucs!!!
December 20th, 2023 at 12:33 pm
Fellow West Bradentuckian here soooo my opinion matters…
If and only IF we hit 10-7.
80+ mil in dead cap space is no joke. plus a new QB and OC, losing Jensen again…
Curious how the players truly feel about playing for Bowles
December 20th, 2023 at 12:34 pm
Weekly reminder that Bowles is playing with 79 million in deadcap and 20m in players injured out of training camp.
He’s competitive with 2/3 of the resources and first time OC and new QB.
December 20th, 2023 at 12:36 pm
Nothing backhanded about Tannenbaum’s view of whats going on in Tampa Joe, IT’S FACTS!! The REAL reason so many rookies and UDFAs are getting so much playing time on this team is because the team was and still is void of top level talent in SEVERAL AREAS! Bowles & Canales has this team playing at the peak of their abilities and Tannenbaum is SPOT ON with his comments of Bowles deserves Coach of the Year consideration if this team wins the division. IF THE BUCS IN A PLAYOFF GAME BOWLES SHOULD BE A LOCK FOR THE AWARD!!!
December 20th, 2023 at 12:37 pm
“Thats when Joe safely drove off the road and spent alone time in the weeds.” LMAO!!! That is one of the funniest openings to an article on here I’ve read. Who wrote that Lee, I bet that’s him who wrote that. To pyle on that, waiter, I will have whatever Mike T is dinking. There must be some strong spirits in Mike T’s beverages. Was he drunk while doing this particular episode of the 33rd. Coach of The Year!!?
Bowles is lucky he isn’t like Craig getting fired on his day off 3 Friday’s ago.
December 20th, 2023 at 12:37 pm
win a playoff game
December 20th, 2023 at 12:39 pm
That is a bunch of bull jive. This team succeeds in spite of Bowles meddling. We have a defense that is stocked with young regressing players. An aggressive Bowles scheme wins when paired with an even more aggressive offensive scheme. For the last two years its been aggressive defense, and conservative mistake free football on offense. If the context is that Bowles has seen the light and embraced taking chances equally on both sides of the ball, then yes maybe he is coach of the year.
December 20th, 2023 at 12:41 pm
If he wins 2 playoff games, then yea he’s COY. If we lose in the first round…gotta launch him. I know that’s tough. But does anyone trust this guy to get us over the hump? Or is he a poor man’s Dungy?
December 20th, 2023 at 12:44 pm
the dead cap stat is misleading. We back loaded a bunch of restructured contracts to avoid truly taking the hit. Perhaps on the offensive side of the ball we have done more with less but on the defensive side, we have lot of money allocated to players who have really underperformed. We’ve also seen a lot of defensive breakdowns which feels like a coaching issue.
December 20th, 2023 at 12:45 pm
I wouldn´t go so far as making him the coach of the year but for sure he is better than what everybody says he is…..
Once more, he can get the Bucs to playoffs when most of Football media and Bucs fans had none expectations.
There is some football to be played don´t get ahead of ouselves and see how the season ends…..
WE ARE NOT AS BAD AS EVERYBODY THINKS,AND WE ARE NOT AS GOOD AS MANY SAY NOW.
December 20th, 2023 at 12:49 pm
Bucs to the superbowl, Todd Bowels redemption tour incoming!
December 20th, 2023 at 12:51 pm
Go 10-7 Joe and win his first playoff game he would earn my vote for sure!
December 20th, 2023 at 12:51 pm
Our Hero. He will win out for 10-7 and clean up the playoffs….on to the Super Bowl Win. Bakefield will be NFL Player of the year. Who would of expected this. Worst to First. It was an amazing turn around.
December 20th, 2023 at 12:52 pm
Please give me some of what Tannenbaum is smoking. If the Bucs DO go 10-7 and win a playoff game then…. Sure. I would be simultaneously astonished and delighted and the ONLY way that happens is if he has truly learned some profound lessons and empowered some pretty amazing course corrections with his team.
That WOULD be worthy of Coach of the Year. Most people his age (and mine) are flat out unable to learn big lessons AND implement those changes in an impactful way.
December 20th, 2023 at 12:54 pm
Supreme Court ruled against affirmative action.
December 20th, 2023 at 12:56 pm
If we can win a playoff game for sure. Need to make up for the 1-6 stretch lol
December 20th, 2023 at 12:56 pm
The Maracle Bucs will be more famous than the Maracle Mets. This will go down in NFL history.
December 20th, 2023 at 1:06 pm
During the Packers game Bowles might have looked at the scoreboard to confirm he was not down two scores. 70% of the time Packers were playing a soft zone.
That played right into the Bucs wheelhouse. That’s when they go down the field and look like the best offense in the league.
Doubt Jax will play it anywhere close to how the Packers did and Bucs will have to work for the yards. Upside is Lawrence will probably not play and their backup only completes 62% of his passes.
A win puts the Bucs @ 84% chance to make playoff up from 73%. A loss drops it to 59%.
Rams win goes to 73% or drops to 15%
Saints win goes to 70% or drops to 24%
Although with 2 minutes left in the game Eagles had a 90% Chance of beating the Seahawks until their Back Up starter drove it 92 yards for a score.
Timing is everything. Bucs get Jax without a QB Sunday and Thursday Night Game will make Winning the Division or Wild Card a little bit easier.
December 20th, 2023 at 1:07 pm
Is the man on Dope or dog food ?
December 20th, 2023 at 1:08 pm
Considering that the big brain boys had the Bucs winning 2 games, 6 max….yeah, he has a point. Considering 20% of the roster is rookies, whether drafted or undrafted. Yep, point taken. And your star LB has a burr up his behind and won’t play. Another point. Yep, he has made some boneheaded gameday decisions, but the team has overcome a $hit ton of adversity. If you had proclaimed a very possible playoff spot/division win back in August you would be heavily medicated and restrained right now
December 20th, 2023 at 1:13 pm
If the Bucs make the playoffs and they host Eagles or Cowboys in 1st round- if they somehow manage to pull off an upset, they’ll likely have to play the 49ers –
and that’ll be that- but a good season considering the circumstances
December 20th, 2023 at 1:32 pm
Let’s see how the rest of the season goes before we crown anyone. If they play like they did against the packers for the next 3 games and we even win a playoff game then I’ll jump on that bandwagon but right now I’m still not liking Bowles coaching ways. Change my mind Bowles
December 20th, 2023 at 1:32 pm
7-7
December 20th, 2023 at 1:33 pm
During training camp when I predicted that Baker might become our Drew Brees when paired with Canales, to my best recollection I had 2 fellow commenters agree with me. When I stated that we had an excellent head coach, an excellent General Manager, and an up and coming Offensive Coordinator with true coaching ability, an excellent pedigree and connections to the Bucs thru Brad Idzik, and emplored the Glazers to not blow it up but strive for stability……CRICKETS.
Todd Bowles has been hammered mercilessly by the clueless ones. I confess to having been critical of him myself at first. I thought his poor judgement in the Rams game last year and somewhat timid actions in a couple of games showed a lack of leadership qualities. I think his lack of success in NY was probably not due to his ability but to circumstances surrounding him. Bowles has a quiet nature and was shadowed by the big personality of BA. Bowles was thrust into the HC job under terrible circumstances. BA hanged him out to dry and lets not forget the Leftnut debacle. He had the Tom Brady hangover to deal with, a GM with his hands tied by the salary cap, and the constant reminder of his failure as a previous head coach in NY.
Todd Bowles has succeeded under stress and constant fire from the fans and media. That is what I want to see in a head coach.
I WOULD SAY TODD BOWLES HAS DONE VERY WELL AND DESERVES ACCOLADES.
December 20th, 2023 at 1:43 pm
If Bowles can get his team into, and win at least 1 playoff game, then maybe a discussion is warranted.
What about Ryans? Started with a rookie QB, and what everyone thought was a lousy team in Houston…Ryans has done more with even less than Bowles. Also throw Campbell’s name in there.
Just trying to be objective.

PS: Turned off the radio this am right about 9:45 or so, and I missed this convo. Did Jade agree with him? Her takes are usually well-reasoned.

Good for them. I didn’t anoint Todd Bowles as the coach of the year. I said he deserves accolades for the job he has done here.
December 20th, 2023 at 1:52 pm
I haven’t done the research but I wonder how many years in a row Detroit has picked in the top 10 of the draft before showcasing a quality team??
December 20th, 2023 at 2:01 pm
1 playoff game win, that’s fans idea of success? Welp not mine, SB or bust. That should be the mindset and expectations. If not then why are circling the drain of mediocrity.
December 20th, 2023 at 2:06 pm
LET US NOT FORGET THE DAMAGE BYRON LEFTWICH DID TO TODD BOWLES.
The weight of that despicable, horrible situation, was borne by Mr. Coach Bowles. He survived. Licht and the Glazers handled it well in the long run.
December 20th, 2023 at 2:19 pm
We won’t be 10-7 because of Bowles, we will be 10-7 inspite of Bowles.
December 20th, 2023 at 2:27 pm
Win out, and get a playoff victory – which would be the first statement win of his coaching career, then you can put him in that conversation.
It’s up to him at this point, he’s got 3 more W’s on the table and 10-7 would be an impressive season.
December 20th, 2023 at 2:37 pm
If the Bucs finish 10-7, literally half of their wins would come from the division. It equates to being declared the world’s tallest midget. Six losses out of the NFCS, and some here are fired up for the playoffs. We’ve had exactly one impressive win so far this season, and that was against a team that lost to the Giants the week before. I’m not impressed, and I still want Bowles gone when time runs out on our final loss of the season.
December 20th, 2023 at 3:26 pm
Coach of the year???
GEEZ!!!!!!
I just wanna see Bowles utilize time-outs in the first half of games and not always take them to the locker room 🤷🏻♂️!!!
Is that asking a lot?
He gets an F in my book for time management skills in a game…
December 20th, 2023 at 4:28 pm
I spat beer all over the bar, guffawing, as I read the headline. ROTFLMAO.
December 20th, 2023 at 4:49 pm
Comedy Central here. Spewed beer. That is funny right there.
December 20th, 2023 at 6:47 pm
Toss up Bowles or Belichick. Ever hear of a guy called Dan Campbell or Shane Steichen?
December 20th, 2023 at 8:47 pm
Coach of the year can’t get enough men on the field .. two weeks in a row.
No accountability in America these days.
December 20th, 2023 at 9:30 pm
Even if Bowles had an 11-3 record and went on to 13-4, he still wouldn’t get COTY. Why? Cos it’s the Tampa Bay Bucs. I know he’s gonna get at least 9-8, but 10-7 would be mah-va-less.
December 20th, 2023 at 11:32 pm
OK…We have all seen or heard the talking heads write and say some ridiculous things this season. This is perhaps the biggest sensationalist click bait BS of all of them.
Geez!
December 21st, 2023 at 12:04 pm
Detroit’s coach has done a very good job and if they go deep into the playoffs, I would take him over Bowles anytime. Jarred Goff is playing the best he ever has and their defense is good.
Harbaugh is getting alot out of a Raven’s team.
Todd Bowles has had 3 games this year where the Bucs looked well prepared and as fans made you hope for success. All away games, at Minn, NOLA and at GB.
At home the Bucs have been pretty horrid offensively. 2 more home games left, Jacksonville and NOLA. If they play really well and are focused for these games, only then would I say Bowles has done a good job.
Losing to Atlanta at home and to Houston deflating and Bowles’ defense was part of those losses. The Phila and Lions home losses weren’t embarrassing but the Bucs just were not in those games and it wasn’t like the Eagles and Lions were playing that well. The Bucs just made a lot of bad plays.
