Hot Seat Chatter Hits Home For Dave Canales
November 30th, 2023Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales spent his previous 13 seasons with Seattle, where head coach Pete Carroll is a king-like figure and the peasants don’t want a revolution.
In Tampa, however, the Bucs-fan masses want a new head coach and feel a change is warranted. Hey, don’t throw daggers at Joe the messenger. Fans are watching the Bucs and are not seeing well-coached team.
Canales was asked today how it’s been for his family enduring the buzz of frustrated Bucs fans during their first season in Tampa.
The first-year playcaller said his wife and kids mingle with lots of Bucs fans and hear the chatter.
“Usually people are pretty gracious, but kids can be brutal,” Canales said. “So we’re learning about that. And we really just take an honest approach to it. You know, like my daughter, she’s 13 but she really knows football pretty well, and she knows when we’re playing good or not. So we’ve had these honest conversations.”
Canales also referenced a conversation, presumably with one of his kids, ‘Dad, this boy says you suck,’ Canales said.
Man, Joe sure hopes the Bucs beat the Panthers on Sunday. That might not change the futures for Bucs coaches. But it would send tens of thousands of Bucs fans home happy, and it might make Monday easier for Canales’ kids.

Dave Canales has been somewhat of a bright spot amidst a depressing coaching output this season
November 30th, 2023 at 3:05 pm
I hope Canales has not close in on his house yet in Tampa…. đ
November 30th, 2023 at 3:07 pm
last year CAR beat us with an interim HC and PJ Walker…we’ve already lost to a rookie qb in Stroud….idk about this sunday honestly….
but i do know if we dont address of OG&C issue on offense and pass rush issues on defense we’ll be in the same position with the new HC…. attack the offseason with the mindset of fixing the trenches….focus on getting 2 G’s and a C for offense and a DE and OLB for defense…shouldve traded DW when we had the chance…bears got a 2nd for roquan smith…imo, DW is worth at least the same…
GO BUCS!!!!!

Unfortunately kids hear from the parents, then repeat what they hear. Kids can be really brutal. I feel bad for Dave because he is kinda handcuffed by Todd Bowles.. You know he has to be thinking what did I get myself into?
November 30th, 2023 at 3:22 pm
Canales is only renting, right?
November 30th, 2023 at 3:25 pm
Actually I’m fine with Canales. Systems are overrated in my opinion. It’s more about the players and playcaller. I mean you can put any play you see another team run into your system if you want to. Unless you are a complete hardhead. It’s also about what you do at practice. So I think Canales would be fine with better run blocking, better running and better overall decision making. So I guess we’re real close.
November 30th, 2023 at 3:25 pm
I hope he stays at least another year. His attitude is so refreshing considering what Leftwich was like and what Bowles still is. I feel he needs more of a chance to acclimate.
November 30th, 2023 at 3:48 pm
His kids go to school and the other kids tell them their dad sucks as an OC? I’m just imagining this being awesome!!! …
LITTLE BILLY’S 6th GRADE PRESENTATION
“For my presentation today, I’m going to discuss running up the middle on every 1st down for an average of .3 yards a carry. I’ll also discuss being incapable of creating plays to free up a HOF WR. We’ll compare Tampa’s play design to the 49ers … who were able to free up all their best players play after play. The title of my presentation is Canales Completely and Totally Sucks as an OC … but He’s a Nice Guy.”
November 30th, 2023 at 3:51 pm
Code Gator! That’s outstanding. Joe, I bet you made yourself laugh when thought of that.
November 30th, 2023 at 3:54 pm
2 years, 2 different OCs, and itâs the same lousy offense. The common thread is Todd Bowles defensive approach and handcuffing these guys in what and how they call. We canât run the âno risk it, no biscuitâ approach because those poor defenders may get tired. So letâs keep them fresh while weâre racking up the losses
November 30th, 2023 at 4:00 pm
I would for Canales to run his offense, and not Todd Bowles offense. A running offense should have at least 1 back that can run.

MarkV Says:

^^^^^
I totally remember when he said that to Joe last year. They were on a losing streak much like this one. Drove me nuts! He was here. He won a Super Bowl. Why would you mess with a formula that works!!!
November 30th, 2023 at 4:03 pm
Well kids often speak the truth. In this case it is brutally honest. Canales wonât survive beyond the last game of the season. Like Bowles, dead man walking.
November 30th, 2023 at 4:09 pm
I will say this, there always seem to be plays to be made. Guys open not thrown to or seen, Protection breakdown, dropped pass, over/underthrown receiver, OL failing to get a push. You can see there are yards out there, collectively the guys have not gotten it done and you have to evaluate your personnel.
Not all the losses are because of the offense, the defense has been much worse.
Canales has come up with good plans and good plays. Execution has been lacking. This isn’t the pass happy offense though. It might be if the run game was a real threat. To be fair, the run game is starting to show signs of improvement, still could use some upgrades in the offseason.
I hope Canales continues as OC going forward, for the Bucs or somewhere else. I think he has earned the shot and shown some promise.
November 30th, 2023 at 4:12 pm
Unfair to both Bowles and Canales. These guys are generally fielding a competitive team. Have a feeling the season will end on an upswing and next year Tampa Bay will be dominant. Expect year end 9-8 record. If that happens, both coaches will be back.

Gipper
I’m supposed to be the blog pollyanna you’re stealing my spot. lol
Just be ready for the incoming. You’re about to be insulted and perhaps in CAPS!
I like the way you think. Let me help you stir the pot…so how would guys on JBF feel if the Bucs fired Bowles and moved Canales into the HC spot contingent on a super NFL DC joining his staff? He clearly has the young guys playing for him and without Bowles looking over his shoulder he might not feel as constrained or he might go out and get somebody like Blake Corum and another big back to join White in the backfield.
Corum received attention for completing a 4.4 40-yard sprint and maintaining a 4.0-grade point average during his first semester at Michigan.

The Bucs really missed a great opportunity after this last loss. Bowels should have been fired and Canales moved to “interim” Head Coach!
Then we could see how Canales calls plays without Bowles banging the drums for more of our non-existent run game. Fire Bowles and let’s truly see what Canales is made up of. He may be the next Head Coach Mike McDaniel. McDaniel slipped through the grasp of some teams. I’d hate to “can” Canales without really knowing what he can do.
Look we have had the same offensive production as last year. As much as I thought Leftwich was a piece of junk, it can’t be a coincidence that two offensive coordinators in a row are producing the same way. The one common denominator is Todd Bowles! Leftwich did fine with Arians. I think both Leftwich and Canales were/are puppets of Bowles. They do what he wants and they say what he wants.
I can’t help but believe that Bowles is actually the “We do what we do” mouthpiece.
Fire Bowles, move Canales to interim Head Coach. We have nothing to lose at this point. If Bowles backs us into the playoffs somehow, we are finished in the first round anyhow. This season is toast, let’s see what Canales is made of before we make any decisions on his future going into next year.

Canalas came here with so much energy, and passion. After 11 games with Bowles it looks like the life has been sucked out of him. The sparkle he first had in his eyes is now one of glazed over tread. Poor guy. That’s what happens when you hitch your wagon to the Bowles train. Maybe he can stay on as Monkin’s QB coach?
November 30th, 2023 at 5:08 pm
I don’t see to much from Canales where I go I want him gone . He has done a decent job in his first year of being an offensive coordinator. It’s the head coach who also serves as DC that I can’t stand ! Your defence and most players are regressing toilet bowels ! Old toad stool needs to go !
November 30th, 2023 at 5:19 pm
Maybe his 13 year old daughter could teach him some offense?
November 30th, 2023 at 5:21 pm
The only thing that is sucking the life out of Canals and the entire Bucs team is listening to our whining, loser fans. You guys have been crying since training camp. Time to shut up. The season will take care of itself.
November 30th, 2023 at 6:27 pm
Doesnât matter who we get we need a QB
November 30th, 2023 at 6:32 pm
A Chowd neighbor of mine said Bill Buckner’s kids got bullied at school after he let that grounder skip between his legs in the ’86 World Series. Kids can be brutal but totally honest without sugarcoating anything. If the Bucs were 6-5 instead of 4-7 and the Bucs O put up 23+ a game, the kids at school would think Coach Dave was awesome. Enjoy the fat paychecks you get for having the 22nd ranked O coach.
November 30th, 2023 at 6:37 pm
I like this Wyoming Joe fella
November 30th, 2023 at 6:51 pm
I look forward to the days Canales and Bowles are called former Bucs coaches. This team needs a no bullsh&t coach with no patience for soft players. Davis, Dean, D. White and JTS should have been benched long time ago. If theyâre going to lose then do it with effort and energy, not the crap weâre seeing every week.
November 30th, 2023 at 7:11 pm
Good organizations don’t chew through coaches. Look at Pitt or SEA. Bad organizations look like CLE and CAR, hitting the reset button every year or two. Thats how you end up with perennial suck, the new coach wants to run a 3-4 D but has 4-3 talent. Or they want ground and pound on O but have West Coast talent. By the time the talent is in place the coach is gone and a new vision comes in the door
November 30th, 2023 at 7:44 pm
Canales isn’t bad OC….but then again it’s easy to look like a genius following sponge-bob-flat-brim
November 30th, 2023 at 7:57 pm
Bowles ALWAYS Makes Sure that his OC pays the price for His Failures and makes them take the fall! Wasn’t that the trend with the jets? YEAR AFTER YEAR? Well yes it was. And what do you know? Another one bites the dust…
Zebras Do Not change stripes. Same offense, two TOTALLY DIFFERENT OC’s… It’s No coincidence. It called Toilet Bowles flushes another career to save SORRY ARSE!
That man better not be here next year.
A sour mood won’t even begin to describe the fan base…
November 30th, 2023 at 8:17 pm
By the time Bowles gets done ruining Canales will have the same attitude as Leftworst..
Sad really. Canales had a great personality and demeanor before Bowles wiped his dragging defeatism all over Canales and broke his mind with how Canales has to teach the players, a stinking toilet bowl style of offense. I’m sure to Canales that it’s akin to sacrilege. (deep dark side stuff) Dark Brown that is!
It’s GROSS what Bowl movement has smeared on poor Canales. Remember how clean he was? Not anymore. Not after the Toilet Bowl…..
November 30th, 2023 at 8:21 pm
The kid is right he does suck.
November 30th, 2023 at 10:35 pm
If the head coach sucks, everyone sucks. Thanks, Todd.
November 30th, 2023 at 11:22 pm
Holy Crap! Come on StPete, Canalas for head coach? Why? He might be a good OC in 4 or 5 years. Right now he canât figure out how to get Evans and Godwin the ball. Head Coach? He is a great guy, but needs a few years to figure out how to be an OC.

Every team seems to be looking for the next “whiz kid, genius young coach” and Canales may get there someday with more experience under his belt. So far he’s been all talk but the guy does seem smart and smart people learn from their mistakes and grow, so there’s some hope there. I’m not 100% convinced he’s gone just because Bowles probably gets fired. The guy knows how to sell himself so the Bucs brass may want to keep him on to see how he grows.
I seriously doubt we land a new HC who has the clout to insist on hiring all of his own ppl and, while I’m not sold on Canales, I think the potential is there (kind of like a draft pick…not exactly a bust in year one so you don’t cut a guy who shows potential). He may thrive under a new HC.
Look around the league at teams with sustained competitiveness. Their HCs are old-school for the most part. Some are offensive minded (Reed in KC) or defensive minded (Tomlin in Pitt). The young stud HCs mainly have come from a coaching “tree” that began with Bill Walsh in San Francisco. Then you have guys like Belichick who people “think” has a “tree” and all of his assistants have been failures as HCs. Vrabel is an outlier but he wasn’t a high-level, long term BB coach.
I fear we end up with a stinking college coach (only one I’d want is Harbaugh because he’s had success in the NFL). The prospects out there are very limited. Demand is much higher than the supply of good coaches. Flash back to the 80s and 90s and look at the coaches then compared to the no-name crew running teams now. (Just ignore our coaches from that era…lol)
