“I Think Todd Bowles Makes It”
November 18th, 2023So let it be written; so let it be done.
Peter King has spoken. The long-time NFL scribe and NBC Sports insider thinks Todd Bowles’ job is safe for 2024.
After returning from Frankfurt where he rubbed elbows with NFL elite during the second of two games the NFL played in the German city, King stopped in for his weekly appearance with Chris “Mad Dog” Russo of SiriusXM Radio fame.
Russo coaxed King into giving his take on the job security of several NFL coaches, including Bowles.
“Todd Bowles? That’s a good question,” King began. “But I think Todd Bowles makes it.”
King did not elaborate.
Of course, Since Team Glazer purchased the Bucs in the 1990s, only one coach has been retained after back-to-back losing seasons. That was Chucky in 2005, and had gave them the franchise’s first Super Bowl during the 2002 season.
How much does Bowles’ leading the Bucs to an NFC South division title last year with a losing record factor in? Joe is not sure. But playoff game did make Team Glazer a nice little stack of loot.
If the Bucs (4-5) finish with a losing record, that will make five straight losing seasons for Bowles dating back to his days leading the Jets.
Very, very few coaches in the Super Bowl era have gotten a chance to extend such a streak to six consecutive seasons.
King actually offered his two cents on all the coaches in the NFC South. The only coach he believes is on thin ice is Frank Reich with the Stinking Panthers.
It’s not that King thinks Reich is doing a terrible job, but King thinks the unpredictable nature of meddlesome Carolina owner David Tepper puts Reich in a dangerous position.
“The owner in Carolina, you can never tell,” King said. “He is a knee-jerk guy who doesn’t care about money. So if he decides that Frank Reich is not the guy, I wouldn’t be surprised.
“Now I don’t think that’s going to happen.”
* On Artie Smith with the Dixie Chicks: “I doubt Arthur Smith goes anywhere in Atlanta.”
* On Dennis Allen with the slimy Saints: “I think Dennis Allen makes it.“
Joe would be very surprised if King’s predictions all come true after a sad season for the NFC South.

Setting the bar pretty low. If Bowles is unsuccessful running this awful low-scoring and boring offense, Buc fans can see no entertainment value in watching or going to their games.
Unless he adapts to modern NFL strategies, I don’t see him being retained. The Glazers aren’t going to try and sell this team as excitement if they continue to score 17-18 points a game and only produce 300 yards of total offense when the rest of the leagues has teams moving the ball and making explosive plays every week, giving fans something to cheer about.
Unless Bowles defense can play lights out and stop good offenses to keep the opponents under 20 points a game, I can’t imagine another year of fans being content with a team that can barely score 2 touchdowns a game.
No other team would want Bowles as their head coach. If they love his defense so much, bring in an offensive minded head coach and keep Bowles as coordinator at his current head coach salary, but he can’t manage games as seen by not knowing when to stop the clock, not knowing when to let the clock run, not adjusting to other coordinators picking apart his weak-ass cover 3 outdated zone garbage with corners playing 12 yards off WR.
New coach is for certain unless his defense can be dominant enough to overcome his game-planning ineptitude and his lack of getting players prepared to play hard every week.

Consider the source.

King has no clue, neither do we. The Glazers will decide after the season is over. If Todd gets the Bucs to the playoffs he has a good chance of staying, if not the Glazers may decide to burn it to the ground.

If Todd Bowles can fix the run blocking and stop running that weak as Cover 2 defense I want him to stay as our head football coach because he finally broke free of his stubborn “we’re gonna run the ball whether we’re good at it or not” attitude and accepted us becoming a pass first football team. It would be nice to see Todd Bowles take more calculated risks and resurrect our super bowl winning no risk it no biscuit approach to winning games instead of calling “safe” plays like a scaredy cat.

Would really like to see an offensive minded coach like eric bienimy next year.

I tend to agree, if you figure in the financial situation the Bucs find themselves in ,prospective coaches would take a look at that and see they would have very little maneuver room to make changes in player personnel or coaching staff, and with their reputations and future coaching employment opportunities on the line if they fail , IMHO , I think we are going to have to let this play out with pretty much what We got until the financial clouds clear a bit.

We’re very fortunate to have mayfield for so cheep this year. About the only qb going at that rate would be ole crableggs himself. Or jacoby brisset.

IF Bowles makes it to 2024 I think the team will get better because our OC will have had a whole season of experience as a playcaller and will be better. Also, many of our 13 rookies will take a step forward. Kancey and Diaby are showing signs already that they can play an important role going forward during the rebuilding of the next Super Bowl team. Cody Mauch will spend the offseason in the weight room and should be able to take a big step forward on the o-line next season.

The better question to ask is : Has Team Glazer begun their due dilligence in identifying new coaching candidates? I believe Bowles only comes back if he wins the division AND Team Glazer cannot find a suitable candidate. It is of value right now to hear new ideas from potential coaches as to what they see the roster is capable of. There cannot be a wait and see approach this season.

Whoever doesn’t win the division gets run without a doubt
Todd Artie and Dennis are all very, very bad head coaches and all deserve to be canned truth be told

@Duane in Sanford,
While the Glazers may be looking at other possible candidates as their next HC I seriously doubt they’ve made a decision on what they’re going to do going forward. I’m sure they’ll paying VERY close attention to how the rest of the season plays out.
I have no doubt that the Glazers want to win another Super Bowl and they’ll keep Bowles IF they believe he can lead the team in that direction.
If Bowles just focuses on the defense and could leave the offense in the hands of a great OC then it could be a situation similar to when Tony Dungy was our HC with Monte Kiffen as our DC.
Obviously, the jury is still out on how good of an OC/playcaller Canales is. If I was the owner of the Bucs I would be interested in seeing what he could do in a second year to see if he could take a big step forward after a full year of experience under his belt.

If Dennis Allen doesn’t win the division he’s gone. Probably the same for Bowles. It’s a low bar for both to just win the division. I don’t think the Glazers expect a playoff win, but would be dissappointed not to at least get that home playoff game. We shall see.
November 18th, 2023 at 12:35 pm
Toilet Bowls and the trash (Baker) he brought with him will be gone next year. No doubt.
November 18th, 2023 at 12:37 pm
Bucs will win the division with whoever is coach or the qb but lose their ass getting blown away in first round of playoff.
November 18th, 2023 at 1:06 pm
Bowles is a dinosaur that deserves to go extinct.
November 18th, 2023 at 1:42 pm
Actually Joe a playoff game is not a huge windfall for the home team considering all the tv money gets put into the big bucket for equal sharing among all 32 teams. Other than parking and concessions it is not that great , and players really take it in the shorts as their salary only applies to regular season games and playoff games pay only 37500-75000 depending on who wins.

I think he’s correct –bowles survives no matter the record
November 18th, 2023 at 3:22 pm
Depends on how the Bucs end.
If they finish 9-8, for example, then sure, he’ll be back.
If, as I predicted before the year and still stand by, they finish 5-12 or 6-11, he’s gone. (and I said they’d be 4-5 right now on the way to 5-12, but perhaps they get the Indy win because AR15 is out).
The team is currently 2-5 in their last 7, and after tomorrow they’ll be 4-6. To get to 9-8, that would mean going 5-2 down the stretch — who in the world thinks Todd Bowles is capable of that type of run? Not me, for sure.
November 18th, 2023 at 3:43 pm
LOl of course he will be back.
November 18th, 2023 at 3:46 pm
If Bowles makes it, it better be because we win a Superbowl this year. Otherwise I am done.

————————————————————————————–
It seems unlikely, but this team did start the season 3-1. Both their offense and defense have shown signs of improvement in the past couple of weeks.
The defense has really been decent all season except for the game a couple of weeks ago where they completely shat the bed. And the offense has scored 20 or more points two weeks in a row now for the first time.
Nothing would surprise me with this team. I believe they have the talent to go 5 – 2 down the stretch if they come out with the same energy as they did last week against the Titans. But they’ve already lost two games earlier this season they could have won so who knows. A 2-5 finish wouldn’t shock me either.

Ed says u r another friggin know it all I guess u must be related to glazers or u r half owner guys like u kill me with u r stupid commentry as far as I can c it has been a pretty entertaining season so far & as I watch most all the teams r pretty much in the same score senerdio as the bucs that’s usually due to defense & other than the Texans game this defense has done some pretty remarkable things this season so stuff u r criticism where the sun don’t shine! Funny clickbait picture!
The Bucs young players must improve as the season progresses or he is gone, imo.

LOL who needs winning?
I’m sensing a pattern here.
Win a championship – then rest on those laurels for 10-20 years running goodwill campaigns on social responsibility for the NFL. It’s so nice to be the shining example of political correctness at 4-6, oops I mean 4-5.
