Eye-Opening Speed From Cody Mauch
November 14th, 2023So who is the fastest Buccaneers offensive lineman?
A data reveal from Tristan Wirfs makes it sound like rookie right guard Cody Mauch is the one.
Wirfs was on the Buccaneers Radio Network last night talking about how Mauch clocked 17.8 miles per hour at one point during Rachaad White’s screen pass catch-and-run touchdown Sunday against the Titans.
Wirfs called that a huge number for an in-game situation, a rare opportunity for an offensive lineman to use his straight-line speed, though fans can see in the highlight video below that Mauch didn’t have a ton of room or time to pick up steam.
For perspective, Wirfs shared that he and Donovan Smith had a 50-yard sprint race last season in practice and he clocked 18 miles per hour while Smith hit 17. But that was straight running, minus fatigue, with time to hit max velocity.
Baker dishes it to Rachaad White and he does the rest for a 43-yard TD!

It’s going to be fun watching this guy grow.

Still think he should be our center. he is very athletic and can get to the second level. wont have as many guys lined up straight on him so brute strength wont be as much of an issue.
November 14th, 2023 at 9:57 am
It’s his NFL strength that is lacking, it took Cappa until his 3 season to fill out
November 14th, 2023 at 9:58 am
He already looks stronger than Hainsey.
November 14th, 2023 at 9:59 am
yes joeski… i’ve been mentioning this occasionally as i watch our running game…
now you’re supporting my theory with facts…
he should be a pulling guard literally like 5 times a game to add additional blocking on the left side with wirfs and stinnie…
that should create more opps for rb1 as they create more space…
rachaad just needs room to breathe out there

He can be the fullback when they handoff to Wirfs.

What was #67 doing ?

“Still think he should be our center.”
Once he adds muscle.

What was #67 doing ? Whiffing…Bosa is going to have his way with him.

If I was the HC I would occasionally be using Wirfs and Vea as RB’s in short yardage situations.

yeah also that’s how you get the team in the national spotlight…
they should do a power backfield a few times a game…
our version of the tush push…
wirfs and vita
or bowles lineman of choice with vita…
how fun would that be…
and the national coverage on it would be guaranteed

^^^^^^
Licht said as much, too.

Agree with Adam NY. Insert the old Green Bay Packer Power Sweep into the play book with Mauch as the Jerry Kramer pulling guard. When Canales draws it up and presents to the offense he’ll say “we get a seal here and a seal here…”

I love seeing the linemen get down field to block and give that extra effort. That fired me up during the game when I saw it.

To be fair to Goedeke, who is admittedly not my favorite, on a screen you kind of want the DL to get past you on a screen so he has less of a chance of tracking down the receiver. Boy he sure walked a fine line though between that and letting the play blow up…
And great, the rookie guard is fast. But can he do the 99 other more important tasks of his job? The growing pains better be worth it and likely won’t be until another off-season conditioning program under his belt.

He should get better all year, hopefully.

Who’d Mauch hit on the play? No one. Who sprung White – Hainsey. Who gets the love – Mauch. SMH.
This is a story about speed, not blocking. –Joe

He’ll get it done.

Love to see the “experts” give their analysis here. Dudes that have no muscle proclaiming how a 24 year old just needs to add muscle, dudes that don’t understand how a screen works wondering why a lineman let a pass rusher through, or on another post, how another proven NFL player is soft, it’s crazy how little some of you truly understood but still want to give your valued opinion.

You people need to remember that Goedeke is playing his first year at right tackle his college position. It’s almost like he’s a rookie again because he was at left guard last season. He is also leaps and bounds better at right tackle, he is going to make mistakes it’s his first year. He is already better than most right tackles in this league and he is only going to improve.

True he did not hit anybody. But he positioned himself between White and defenders as a screen. This was sufficient for White going the distance untouched. If he had chosen to block a defender instead, he would have taken only that one defender out of the play (there were three in pursuit) and risked a penalty. Mauch played it smart.

Not hating on the kid, he’s a rookie from a small school, but he needs to bulk up quite a bit. He generally does a good job of getting on his guy, but just lacks the strength to move guys — in general. Again, not a criticism at all – ideally rookies from small schools, and D2 and certainly D3 schools, should sit for a year for this exact reason, as they’re rarely strong enough to deal with NFL talent right away. Marpet is the rare exception – which is also why he rocketed up draft boards – he was such a psychical freak. But for Cody, I think next year he’ll look different and we’ll start to see why he’s going to be a good player.

Between Koetter, BA, and Bowles, Licht has been drafting some first class Olinemen and a few on the D. That screen was a thing of beauty. Canales is getting to know his players and vice versa. Bucs have a good chance to look decent next Sunday.

Mauch will get better as time progress. Luv the guy. He’s got that old wrestlers ..Hacksaw Reynolds looks.
November 14th, 2023 at 8:12 pm
Sole Mauch highlight so far…Licht looking for his next Magic Marpet but may have drafted the red headed stepchild instead. Time will tell…
November 14th, 2023 at 8:25 pm
Hainsey was close to illegal man downfield.
November 14th, 2023 at 8:35 pm
Fast OL that is weak and needs to hit the weight room IS as impressive as Mike Clayton CAN block …..

I noticed Mauch on that play and I’m sure it will be noted this week at One Buc meeting rooms. That outta be fun! He has got that high motor for sure!
BTW for all the hate that Hainsey gets from some of us, he did throw the key block, pulling outside on that play.
Go Bucs!
