“This One Really Hurt The Most”

November 7th, 2023

Rookie edge rusher YaYa Diaby talks pain.

Joe loves some of the optimism pulsating through a sect of Bucs fans, not the typical war mongers prone to comment on this site.

The Bucs easily could be 5-3, the optimists will say. The offense is improving quickly with quality quarterback play, and QB performance normally drives the bus in the NFL. They’ll also tell you the NFC South stinks and the Bucs easily could win out in the division (4 wins) and beat the Titans and Colts to finish with 9 wins and a division title.

The upside lovers also will bark about how the Bucs have so many young players — 13 rookies, plus a rookie playcaller — so it’s logical that the team will look better later this season.

Joe can’t buy all that, but Joe can’t argue too much with it, either.

When your quarterback is doing good things and protecting the football like Baker Mayfield is, and your team is not ravaged by injuries, you have a chance.

Joe hopes the Houston Horror on Sunday was a teamwide wakeup call. The twisted loss to the Falcons should have been it, but it wasn’t.

Rookie edge rusher YaYa Diaby referenced the pain in the Bucs locker room during his visit to the Buccaneers Radio Network.

“This one, this one really hurt the most,” Diaby said. “Like other losses we felt like we should have one, But this one we know we should have one. So that’s when it hurt the most. All the guys who was giving it our all, it just, it wasn’t enough. So that’s why it hurt the most.”

Pain can be a great motivator. So can confidence. Perhaps the Bucs’ offensive explosion combined with team-wide humiliation will be a winning combination for Sunday against the Titans.

I buy what I see, and I see a largely unmotivated, sloppy, poorly coached team of underachievers.

Let’s see how actually angry they are on Sunday. One more egg and this team is done.

    I see a six-win ceiling, if that.

  2. K_bassuka Says:

The only thing Barker is doing is missing wide open receivers. That pos is destroying the team!

  3. Upstate NY BUC Says:

No emotion on the field!! no high fiving, no gang tackling…back 7 looked totally clueless out there Sunday. Must win Sunday, I like that Michael Penix kid, next Tua…

  4. NJbucs23 Says:

Screw this team. Nothing but a bunch of overpaid fat bums. I can’t wait to come back down Dec 3 for game. Said no one ever !

  5. Jack Clark Says:

Todd Bowles let a rookie quarterback get 70 yards and a touchdown with only 40 seconds left in the 4th quarter 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

  7. Paratrooper Buc Says:

    Joe,

As a former infantry officer, I saw great soldiers busting their ass to “be all that you can be” but let down by their leaders. This is what I’m seeing here with the players being let down by the coaches. Bowles is stubborn. He never adjusted and stuck to his guns on his defense approach with holes being abused by a rookie cutting the zone up for chunks that lost us the game. The run game was better but the stats show it’s still average at best but we still rely on it way too much for way too little while shamefully under utilizing Godwin or Evans. The old adage of “The best defense is a good offense” is definitely what the NFL wants and until Bucs get a good offensive coach again, the team will not succeed. So maybe the players will fight and play hard but a bad leader (coach) will squander their effort.

  8. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

IF the offense truly has their act together AND the crap against Texans was out of the norm its far from over. They’re riding a losing streak….guess what, the Niners are too, 3 stinkers. Plus the Aints and Pigeons haven’t played each other, and the Bucs are in the easy part of the schedule. We will see

  9. realistic-optimistic Says:

Doesn’t matter how hard the players work if the coach tells them to march off a cliff.

  10. Bee Says:

This team probably won’t win another game

  11. John Sinclear Says:

3-5. Two games out of first place. Two games out of Buccaneer Cove. Who ya gonna call, the flag stand or the harbormaster?

  12. Beej Says:

If our defense could stop the opposing team from traveling the length of the field in the final 45 seconds, we would be five and three

  13. power sweep Says:

“QB performance normally drives the bus in the NFL.”

    That’s why we’re 3-5.

  14. realistic-optimistic Says:

If our defense could stop the opposing team from traveling the length of the field in the final 45 seconds, we would be five and three

    alas…

  15. FortMyersDave Says:

Cobraboy, 6 wins might be optimistic but if you are right it will be just like a few of the other bad seasons where the Bucs were putrid but just won enough games to miss out on the top tier talent in the coming draft like 1988: Perkins’ boys won the last game vs Detroit, slipped to #6 in the draft from #3 and landing Broderick Thomas but missing out on Deion Sanders, Derrick Thomas and Barry Sanders who went in the 3 previous picks. 2006: beating the Browns late to go 4-12 and fall behind them and the Lions in the draft who got Joe Thomas and Megatron while the Bucs got Gaines Adams. This happened again in 2017 with an upset over the Saints which cost the Bucs Quenton Nelson.

Bowles will probably find just enough wins to stick it to the Licht and the new coach with having to mortgage the farm to move up and get a premier QB like the Panthers did this past April and look at how messed up that franchise is now, as bad as the Bucs……

  16. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

LOL this team just lost 4 in a row and 5 of 6.

Wake up and smell the coffee Joe.

    The offense is objectively terrible.

The defense is now arguably the worst in the league.

The Titans are going to take this team out behind the woodshed.

There is no rallying the troops on this season. This team has already lost multiple games in humiliating fashion.

How do you lose at home after getting 3 fumbles on the goal line before the opponent was about to score?

251 total yards in a game?

How do you lose to a rookie with 46 seconds on the clock?

    470 yard? 5 TDs?

    Bucs are a punchline.

  17. Buc4evr Says:

Poor coaching and lousy play calling will keep this team from winning 9 games. Bowles and Canales are history at the end of the season. This team has a lot of holes talent wise and the coaching just adds to the problem. There is absolutely no defense for the bottom feeder coaches on this team. Quit making excuses, the record speaks for itself.

  18. kgh4life Says:

    @K_bassuka

Did you even watch the game? The only reason the Bucs scored 37 pts was because of Baker and that should be enough to win games. Baker wasn’t the problem on Sunday.

  19. WyomingJoe Says:

Same losers commenting. You girls would be whining if our record was 8-0. You’re pathetic. Wouldn’t want to be in a bar fight with most of you except for the Army Vet (thanks for your service) and Buckeye. Still have 9 games left so keep fighting!

  20. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

For the love of all that is holy stop trying to prop up Baker Mayfield.

He’s garbage. One game against a team that just lost to the freaking Panthers does not suddenly absolve a career of underperforming and getting coaches fired.

Why does this fanbase insist, nay DEMAND, mediocrity?

Why in God’s name would you want to bring back Baker when 2024 has the deepest QB class since 1983? WHY?

    ARE YOU ALL STUPID?

Why hamstring this team with yet another bloated contract when there are 10 QBs likely to go in the first round?

Go into 2024 season with 2 young cost controlled QBs then stack on positions of need.

    This isn’t rocket science folks.

  21. matthew a veal Says:

I have been somewhat optimistic, but my flaw is i dont watch or read enough of other teams, which means that other teams have reason to be optimistic that i am blind to.
I get really impressed by stroud, for example, but it could be we are just bad, he isnt what i think he is.
maybe I give too much weight to cap room issues, and maybe bowles is a great coordinator that will never be a top tier head coach. Maybe the glazers arent as good as i think or the new owners for other teams are even better. and maybe licht is a decent gm that the stars aligned for with brady, never to repeat.
if we are having these conversations 2 years from now, its no doubt time for wholesale change. until then i will be mostly optimistic

  22. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

    Earth to WyomingJoe:

    THIS TEAM IS NOT 8-0

This team is 3-5 on a 4 game slide.

What’s it going to take for you to accept this reality?

  23. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

    2 years from now Matthew?

    2 YEARS?

2 games is going to be rough, nevermind 2 years.

  24. Mike Johnson Says:

When we lost to the Falcons, right then and there..I knew. Since then they have replaced their QB. We have been beat by 2 rookies thus far. And we face another rookie QB this week. So you..Pick’em. I’m, already knowing………

  25. Jeff Says:

JBF’s new ads are just awful. Some don’t even give the option to close even after waiting. I hope you gents are making a ton of money off these. Worried they will hurt your brand.

  26. Bucfan37 Says:

Still not convinced that Bowles won’t be around next season. He fits the overall nonplan for reviving this franchise. Bucs fans know how this this scenario plays out. We won our SB recently, this team is only a shell of that SB team. Hurry up and wait.

  27. Bucnjim Says:

Wrong! The Falcons game hurt the most because it was a sign of things to come. Division loss to a one dimensional team means very few wins in your future.

  28. Beej Says:

Baker averages 233 a game, the best in the league is 290. Baker threw for 252 the other day, only 9 quarterbacks in the league do more than that. Are you saying that is our problem?

  29. TexasBuc 1976 Says:

My 2 cents. The offense had a good game, Baker is a good, not great QB. Offensive play calling is weak, Chris Godwin could have sat on the bench for the little he was used. R White had his best game. Special teams, our kickers are top-drawer.
Defense, Ryan Neal should be benched along with JTS. No edge rush. C Davis had his worst game and J Dean is brittle.
Coaching is horrible. Blitz first half it works, abandon it in the second half.
First half 47 secs left, second down Texans in their half, we have 3 TOs and we let the clock expire. Then the killer last series.

  30. Hodad Says:

    Could be 5-3? Yeah I could be 6ft 3″, but I’m not. I’m 5ft 11″, and the Bucs are 3-5. I also could’ve been a doctor.

  31. toddbowlessucks Says:

    FIRE TODD BOWLES

  32. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Jeff

    Agreed.

I came to an ad site, and a tiny bit of Buc football trickled in…

  33. DFW Buc Says:

Just as defenses know our snap count, even rookie QB easily know our defensive scheme. We are easy to read because that is the way this team is coached. Stubborn should be the team motto, just like their head coach. He will never understand that a great coach adjusts on the fly and assurs his team for success. That’s why the failure coming out of halftime. The players are being set up to fail by this coaching staff.

  34. Jvato24 Says:

You guys see doom and gloom, I see a team with the 8th overall pick in the draft

  35. Texasbucsfan Says:

Now you know why Tom Brady walked away from the Bucs. I can’t imagine what he had to go thru with this pathetic team last year.

  36. Davenport Says:

YaYa should start the rest of the way. I think we’ve all seen enough of JTS. He’s an affordable ST player and thats it.

  37. Nicholas Carlson Says:

A couple more wake-up calls and we’re going to want to put this season to sleep for good

  38. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Jvato

It could be the #1 pick..

You know like Jameis or Baker or Jamarcus Russell.

Mahomes wasn’t even top 10. Montana , third round. Brady .. sixth.

Way too much credence given to high draft picks.

Where do the Steelers pick every year?

  39. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

This last game was very strange. All season the offense was averaging about 17 points until this past Sunday where they scored 37. And the defense was holding opposing teams to 18.3 points (tied for #6 in the NFL) and then shat all over itself on Sunday.

I don’t really know what to expect going forward. It appears that the sky is falling but if the offense REALLY took a step forward and can continue to play better and the defense can go back to limiting teams to 18.3 points/per game then maybe the BUCs can still win the division.

I hope I’m wrong but it certainly doesn’t feel that that is what’s going to happen. They just lost two consecutive games they should have won.
Bowles correctly characterized the loss to the Texans as “devastating”.
Another devastating loss like that and the Glazers may send Bowles packing, something they’ve never done mid-season.

  40. Scott Says:

Our defense sucks. Plain and simple. Signs are pointing to the scheme being too hard. It’s always so and so messed up.

  41. Fred McNeil Says:

I’ve tried to stay optimistic but my patience has reached its limit. Bowlzo must go even if we manage to win a few more games. He is not the future.
Baker is pretty good, but he’s not the future.could Trask be the future? Maybe, but I doubt it.
The saddest thing of all: Do I see us beating the Titans? No, I do not.

  42. HC Grover Says:

Irrational optimism….Bowlzo is not up to it.They will not win the division. A blunder here, a blunder there. No chance with this guy as HC

  43. K_bassuka Says:

    @kgh4life

Not many teams score over 35 points while the alleged QB throws for under 275 yrds and claim that said QB was the reason for the team success, just saying!

  44. Joe Says:

Mahomes wasn’t even top 10. Montana , third round. Brady .. sixth.

Way too much credence given to high draft picks.

And you give way too much credence to accidents.

How many Hall of Fame quarterbacks have been selected in the third round or worse since Montana was drafted? Off the top of Joe’s head, there are three: Joe Montana, Kurt Warner (undrafted free agent) and Tom Brady.

So three guys (off the top of Joe’s head) since 1979. The Bucs should bank on complete accidents to get their franchise quarterback? Every other year there is at least one decent (or better) quarterback selected in the first round. Not every year, but just about every other year. Sometimes more than one.

Gotta hunch at least one of the top six quarterbacks in the 2024 draft will pan out. But yeah, the Bucs should wait until the third day of the draft to find their next Desmond Ridder or Colt McCoy or Mason Rudolph.

    This is crazytalk.

  45. K_bassuka Says:

Can’t wait for this team to get rid of Barker Maybefield and his OU garbage fans!

  46. Buc king Says:

    Fire todd…
See what you have in trask..
I will say this I think baker like most nfl qbs need the complimentary help of a effective run game.
    We’re weak in the trenches..offense n defense..
I think it’s time to cut n run on some high payed players.

Starting with Shaq Barrett.. to much money not enough pressure.
Carlton Davis- is not worth his money..I would try to shop him for picks..
White Is more suited to be the back up rb and play slot wr..
Godwin is not being utilized correctly simple and plain- i blame play call
    Jensen is probably done
    Te room is basically trash..
Oline is make shift and takes a massive nose dive after wirf..
D lime I see vita and the rest are trash..
David is still David like to see him finish as a buc..
White has like always looked lost on coverage and sub par at finishing the blitz… comes in untouched multiple times and wifs..
I guess them qbs got better foot work then his horses.
Jts back up role at best if that..
    Rookies im hold judgment on..
    Dean injury prone …
Mike evans is the best buc player we have ..hope he retires a buc..
Kicker is 2nd best player we have..then vea wire and Winfield jr..

I’m seeing a lot of fat on this roster we can trim..
I could actually go further but my current analysis is that baker can’t pre read defenses..does feed his best players and telegraphs the run.

    The o coordinator is overwhelmed..
Todd is a joke and has no ability to adjust in game..be was met to be a d cord at best or college come..I call him love Smith all the time..its like his twin..

Honestly this may be the time to shop players and stock up on picks..
This season will be a wash..
It’s ugly football and I feel bad for the pros I named being surrounded by lovers and bad coaches.
If Jason doesn’t make the move to cut Todd im lose respect for his iq.

I knew this season would be ups and downs but I expected a better defense and decent passing game..I see hot garbage..I already gave my tickets away i can think of better things to do then watch other fans celebrate at our house.

  47. Buc king Says:

  49. adam from ny Says:

    baker’s a decent quarterback…

yes in recent weeks, his feet have become much happier – that’s blatantly obvious – the o-line never creates a nice pocket around him like they did for tom…it always quickly collapses on him…

if baker becomes a back up qb in the future, he is probably the best back up in the league

  51. Pewter Power Says:

If you’re not good it doesn’t matter. Winfield can’t cover the entire field. We feel hurt you have no pass rush moves and no one can’t get close enough for the quarterback to feel a breeze 90% of the time. We’re upset Rashad white is getting more targets than our best receivers. We’ll see how much it hurt the next game. Can’t beat the titans then pack it in

For starters, he built a team that made Tom Brady want to come here in the first place.

  54. John Sinclear Says:

Joe – There’s no such thing as an “accident”! I investigate these things for a living. They’re always the fault of somebody. Somebody does something stupid. Somebody then gets hurt – or killed! You may not like it, but that’s just the way it is!

  55. D1 Says:

    Jmark,

I understand your overall point but it’s not too much credence it’s high value that drives the QB market. The market is driven by demand. Demand for a franchise QB. Obviously, like any commodity there’s a supply and demand equation. In the NFL, the demand is high and the supply is low.

Teams have to take advantage of the market that allows for more risk taking than ever before. Meaning, a mistake at the QB position used to set back a franchise for years. Today, it doesn’t even set a team back a year. That is predicated upon a team not trading away lots of future draft picks to get said player.

Yes there’s exceptions to the rule, you named them. But it is the exceptions. They don’t drive decisions or shouldn’t.

Personally, I’d rather get a team and coaching staff assembled then find my franchise QB. Like KC.

  56. 1sparkybuc Says:

37 points against a crap defense is not impressive. 39 points allowed by a rookie QB is atrocious. We can’t compete with good teams, and any team in our division is capable of beating us. We have a few players to build a team around. They’re not enough right now, and this coaching staff is overmatched. We need new leadership and a QB who can see over the LOS. Forget about the playoffs. The Bucs can’t beat any team with a winning record. Like last year with Brady, the Bucs are one and done even if they get there. Fire Bowles and let Licht find a new HC. After 47 years, I’m losing interest.
