Joe can barely believe the stats concerning how Todd Bowles’ defense ole’ed so badly playing matador defense to allow Houston rookie C.J. Stroud to win the game yesterday.
These facts are absolutely horrific to Joe and if Joe didn’t know any better, the Ghosts of Bucs Nightmares Past came back to haunt the franchise — defensive coordinator Mike Smith, cornerbacks Alterraun Verner and Vernon Hargreaves and safeties Sabby the Goat and Chris Conte.
Get a load of what Mike Sando of The Athletic dug up about how Stroud’s 75-yards, 40-seconds touchdown drive to beat the Bucs yesterday.
… Teams in similar situations — needing a touchdown to tie or win, having at least 75 yards to go, having 30-60 seconds left in regulation — lose almost every time. The Texans were in better shape than most, having preserved two timeouts. Still, the odds against them were steep.
Since 2000, teams facing that situation had been 0-74 with fewer than two timeouts and 2-20 otherwise, per TruMedia. Stroud helped Houston claim the third victory from those dire circumstances (teams with less than 30 seconds were 0-130).
That game yesterday wasn’t just about coaching, it wasn’t just players playing poorly. That was a complete and total fundamental breakdown — starting with Bowles and going down to the bottom of the roster.
You cannot tell Joe that the Bucs defense collapsed like a game of Jenga in a Dunedin dive bar because Jamel Dean had a concussion. When did he turn into Mel Blount?
Remember yesterday when Joe wondered if yesterday’s embarrassment was Bowles’ Tennessee-Ready moment or his Capitol Collapse/”You Like That!” game? After reading Sando’s intel, yesterday’s loss was likely closer to Capitol Collapse/”You Like That!” than Tennessee-Ready.
What a gutless defensive effort!

Silver linings, Joe
– There can be no doubt that coaching is the most significant contributor to the Bucs problem. No matter what happens during the result of the season, this is on Bowles’ record forever, just like the collapse vs. the Rams. No one can be fooled into thinking he will ever coach this team (or any other) to the Super Bowl.
– There is plenty of time to try out young and untested players during this lost season, and accumulate tape for the next coaching staff.
– The Panthers messed up and did not pick CJ Stroud (can you imagine having to deal with that guy 2x a year?).

I think the team has quit. Multiple guys not happy with their contracts, and Bowles not being able to relate to the players and being a stingy SOB.

Boss you’re right, the team quit on Bowles which means he has lost the locker room. 1 post today on this site said 3 of the top receivers Sunday on the Texans team. Then I remember checking the stats for the game and the Texans had 3 receivers over a 100 yards yesterday. The team just didn’t have no energy. It’s just sad and depressing to have to watch another 9 games of this when you’re a true Bucs fan

It should have been 36 seconds instead of 46 as well. Todd Bowles abysmal clock management when he used a timeout instead of allowing the 10 second runoff increased the Texans’ chances significantly.
What if Baker Mayfield had taken a sack? That would have taken more than 10s off the clock. There is no excuse for Bowles to make that mistake.
Plus what is Harold Goodwin being paid for? His running game is bad and as the assistant head coach it is his job to help the HC with clock management.
Just a poor coaching job all around and that is not making excuses for individual poor play in the secondary,

If a team hasn’t done X for a really long time, or they’ve been horrible at Y for a while, guaranteed they’ll fix it against Bowles.
It feels like Bowles doesn’t even watch film on his opponents. If he did, his defenders might jump a rout once in a while. Imagine defenders diagnosing a play and beating the receiver to the spot! Instead Bowles’ defenders are 10 yards off, always allow the catch, then HOPE to tackle for a minimal gain. Never anticipating the offense…

Derek I am not sure it’s much about contract it’s more of players just tied of losing. You saw what players were saying about the Raiders. They were just tied of losing and tied of the BS from the HC.

So starting with the abysmal play calling in the playoffs against the Rams… where even Bruce Arians was furious…Todd Bolwes has now lost 4 games, including the recent one against the Falcons and last one against the Texans by the worst DC calling possible. Why oh why is he head coach and DC … he can’t do either!!!! 4 games where we have 45 seconds left and all he does is blitz… when, when is he going to learn it doesn’t work. Play zone, give up short yardage stop them getting into field goal range, eat up the time. Last weekend was worse ever… blitzed us into giving up a touchdown when all he had to do was stop them going 75yds in 45 secs…

In terms of firing Bowels midseason, Harold Godwin has experience as interm head coach when Arians was out for covid in 2021 so I’m assuming thats who you go to …..
Then Kacy Rogers and Larry Foote will manage the defense.
I really believe theres a good chance Bowles is out the door in 7 days if Will Levis lights you up and a home loss to the Titans. So Bowles better be “Tennessee Ready”

I still think that the Bucs have it in them to overcome this stretch of bad luck. Yes, Bowles is not a good HC. He proved that last year, this year, and with the NYJ. There is a lot of skepticism as to why it didn’t work last year with Brady. Brady didn’t say much publicly after the season was over and he would never cast blame on anyone but himself. Baker can win, but the defense is uninspired. The team needs the HC to be a leader not a best friend who makes excuses for them when they don’t play well. Anyway, I still think the Bucs will turn it around and show what they really can do. Keep the faith and keeping it real in Ireland.

It isn’t like Mahomes did this to us, and that would be bad enough. It was a rookie QB on a below average team. Enough said. I think we need a new HC as soon as the season ends to really evaluate this talent and hopefully keep the right guys, ditch the deadwood, and we get a top 5 or 10 pick in every round to rebuild. Otherwise, it will be a long and painful trip back to the dark ages.

I feel like Bowles isn’t very good at the head coaching duties, but still loves being a defensive coordinator.
Rather than let someone else be the DC, he tries to do that, AND be head coach, and does neither one well.
I think he is way over-rated as a DC, and is not good with HC responsibilities either. But he’s particularly bad when he can’t focus on either exclusively.
He’s an over-elevated position coach, sadly.

Oh Doc, please spare us this BS. The team is in salary cap hell cuz they want all-in on the Brady years, and EVERYONE was behind those moves, which got us a Super Bowl win, and close to another one.
As for Bowles – he is the HEAD COACH. The buck stops with him.
When your team is lifeless for 4 weeks in a row, playing sloppy, soft, and undisciplined, it’s a reflection of the head coach. Canales can take a hike with him, they both need to go.

The ineptitude of the coaches is being magnified by the lack of player participation. The team is losing and creating a losing culture. A losing will drive fans away and then they’ll have to work to regain trust.
SENDING THE WRONG MESSAGE
The Raiders fired their HC to send a message to the fans that a brighter future is around the corner. The Bucs retaining Bowles are sending a message they will tolerate a horrible product.

The only thing saving Bowles is that nationally, nobody cares about the Bucs or Texans. If the Cowboys had shat the bed like that it would be trending on X. The Bucs dropping that deuce barely even registered as a blip on NFL media. CJ Stroud is the story, the Bucs ineptitude was expected and not surprising.

First, I put it 100% on coaching. Bowles plays safe at the end, is literally running clock – then the idiot takes a timeout to stop the clock when he just before that play was trying to run the clock. It’s on of the all-time stupid coaching moves. I wouldn’t say that if he wasn’t trying to run the clock before that – but that was Bowles plan, and then when presented with a mild brain teaser a 10-year old could solve, he panicked and made the wrong call. If that doesn’t happen – the Texans flat out do not win.
But, with that said, it is worth point out that Stroud was on fire and making some amazing throws. Give the kid some credit. Of course he might not have caught on fire had Bowles not just sat back in his soft zone with no pressure the entire second half – until the second to last series, only to go back to a prevent defense on that last series.
Mindbogglingly stupid decision by this incredibly stupid and inept coaching staff.
Devin White had an amazing first half – and this idiot Bowles gets a 7-point lead, and thinks it’s a 45-point lead and calls off the pressure. Why did this moron do that? Did anyone in the press ask him about it? Did anyone in the press drill him about why Davis continues to sit back in zone defense the entire day when it’s clearly not working? Of course not – not that it matters, because Bowles wouldn’t have any answer anyways.

Beej – Baker’s best game of the season was 250 yards and 2 TDs. That’s the problem.
Also, Mike had to make an incredible catch to come back and get that underthrown ball – which actually isn’t a problem since that’s what Mike is paid to do. But it’s not like it was some great throw.
On a day when it was clear the game would be a shootout, the Bucs had to settle for 3 FGs. That’s another huge issue.
In any case don’t pretend like Mayfield had some amazing day, he didn’t. He had 250 yards, 2 TDs and didn’t turn it over and the Bucs lost. He’s Mike Glennon. And I didn’t like Mike Glennon then, and I don’t like him now.

After watching for two years, the problem is Todd Bowles resorts to a four-man pass rush and zone every single time towards the end of a game and trying to maintain a lead.
This team sucks at zone (that’s coaching) and has no four-man pass rush. He’s a great DC but he has a couple major flaws.

bowles defense has a history of blowing games late… remember cooper kupp and the rams in the playoffs? the first thing i said after cades touchdown was they left too much time on the clock for that sad defense, they should have taken that ten second run off and run the ball once before scoring leave the texans with 17 seconds instead of 42… they seem close to turning these close losses into wins but they need leaders on defense to hold everyone accountable
