Aaron Stinnie Move Could Be Permanent

November 6th, 2023

GM Jason Licht talks about his versatile guard.

Interesting words yesterday from Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht.

(These interesting words did not include the colorful phrases Licht likely was uttering after the game.)

On the Buccaneers Radio Network pregame show, Licht talked about the team’s move to Aaron Stinnie at left guard. Starter Matt Feiler injured his knee against Atlanta two weeks ago and Stinnie got the call in the following game at Buffalo.

Stinnie, the 29-year-old veteran in his fifth Bucs season, played well against Buffalo. That was Joe’s impression and Licht said the same thing on-air.

“He looked a lot better this year than last year before he got hurt,” Licht said of Stinnie.

During the 2022 preseason, Stinnie was on the field with the future Amazon drivers and grad students late in the second half against the Colts. That was a bad look for a valued veteran and a Super Bowl contributor.

Stinnie might have been on the verge of getting cut after that preseason game but he instead blew out his knee with an ACL tear and never finished the game. Stinnie has made a tremendous post-surgery recovery and, per Licht, now looks more like his Super Bowl self.

A quiet hero of the Bucs’ 2020 Super Bowl season, Stinnie started three postseason games after right guard Alex Cappa got injured.

“And that’s when we ran the ball well, too,” Licht added.

Stinnie was a solid run blocker yesterday, and given the Bucs’ focus on the run, Joe is wondering if the Bucs will stick with Stinnie whether or not Feiler gets healthy.

Yes, the Bucs remain all-in on producing a quality running game.

“We have to be efficient in that area if we want to be in this at the end of the year,” Licht said.

My point all season. If a player is not performing well, sit him and plug in another and see what the results are. Don’t wait til someone gets hurt to made a change. This is what good coaches do. Look at Mcvay with the Rams the QB there was a top pick and had been there a while when Mcvay took the job. The QB underperformed so Mcvay not only benched him but showed him the door. We all see what happened afterwards Super Bowl and a top notch offense

Todd. Bowels is as good as gone: think it through logically. Debacle yesterday vs Texans. What’s the point of having a defensive minded head coach if your defense does that? well never forget the rams game 2021. The Bucs ownership likes flashing shiny things, and Bowels isn’t it. Will they make the mistake of hiring Canales like they did after firing Lovie Smith? it depends on the Bucs record. if we have top 7 pick it will be QB and new regime. If we go 8-9 and pick 17th Baker gets a few more years.

  3. Hodad Says:

Joe, the fact that you even have to ask the question will Stinnie keep starting shows what little faith we all have in this coaching staff.

  4. Popcorn Mike Says:

The hard part of this whole Bucs mess is, we have to watch this another 9 weeks

  5. I remember 21 Says:

I also will never forget the Rams game of 2021 and bowles’ disastrous, atrocious, borderline criminal playcalling. #FIREbowles

  6. Fansince76 Says:

Stinnie should start the rest of the way definitely, he is a better guard than Feiler.

  7. teacherman777 Says:

Mauch was a LT in college.

    Put Mauch at LG.

Stinnie used to be a RG.

    Put Stinnie at RG.

    Duh!!!

  8. MerryPlankster777 Says:

Rams game of ’21 season was the worst! How did they ever hire this coach.
    Replace Todd please.
Been here too long on the incorrect statement that he is a defensive expert. He keeps proving that not to be the case!

  9. Eric Says:

He should be if the organization stop handing out jobs he probably would have won the job!

  10. #99 the big fella Says:

Who wants to chip in on the FIRE BOWLES billboards?

  11. Popcorn Mike Says:

It’s obvious that Bowles has lost the locker room. Yesterday the defense played like they just didn’t give a damn. Although the offense scored 37 points and looked decent, it was still the same BS. Good field position a couple of times but only score 3 points. Overthrown receivers, big plays called back because of penalties, why aren’t they going to Evans and Godwin those two players are the franchise. What a mess

  12. BFFL Says:

No more Brady around to save Lichts butt. Time to find another GM.

  13. Jeff Says:

Fire Clueless Todd! Bucs’ don’t take advantage on the talent they have. Old Clueless likes to do it his way. Bowles is Dungy Stubborn and Lovie Stupid! That’s very bad combo.

  14. BucsFan81 Says:

Where is the article saying Bowles has been Fired. That’s all us fans want at this point.

  15. Toad Bowels Says:

Teacherman. I prefer playing guys out of their natural position where they have a lot of experience because it amps up the degree of difficulty factor.

Of course Mauch should be on the left side where he played in college and Stinnie on the right side but I’m heard headed and inflexible.

Toad Blowes his Toad Bowels each and every game!

Cheers Toad! I’m going to dial up another stinker for a defense performance next week!!

  16. BucU Says:

“”””We have to be efficient in that area if we want to be in this at the end of the year,” Licht said.””””

Is that another playoff joke? Who do these people think we are morons? This product SUCKS and there will be no more supporting it. I’m here to vent and that’s it. No more Pewter Report. No more Ira podcasts. It’s all white noise at this point. Fire this incompetent coaching staff NOW or pay the price with the fandom, if there’s any of them left out there.

  17. Usfbuc Says:

Watch the next coach is going to come in and use players in their natural positions and play to their strengths and we will go from losers to a playoff team.

  18. Bobby M. Says:

Great! So our most effective starter was already on the team? Licht is about as inept as Bowles. JTS is a bust, White is avg at best, Davis and Dean are both #2 CBs being paid like #1s. You’ll be hard pressed to find a winning organization that ties up $30 million in their CBs….much less to play zone coverage. We spent a top 5 pick on a MLB that cant consistently stop the run and is piss poor in coverage. We got three draft picks in TEs, two of which barely see the field. Shaq Barrett is grossly overpaid…..dude hasn’t been remotely effective since we lost JPP and Suh.

If I’m a HC, what’s the appeal of this team?…Particularly if I’m forced to work with Licht. We’re not in position to snag a top tier QB….we’re going to have a slew of positions to fill….OL, RB, S, CB, DE, QB, MLB…..who’s signing up for that mess?

  19. Rican Says:

Is Todd Bowles fired yet ?

  20. confido75 Says:

Todd Bowles gets fired the second to the last game of the season. Licht and the Glazers won’t fire him now. Who are they going to replace him with, Canales? Let’s be serious. The entire coaching staff will be gone come year end. This is all part of a master plan anyways.

  21. DEEEMO Says:

With 46 seconds left you let a rookie QB drive the length of the field to score the winning TD. It is time to move on from Todd Bowels as Head Coach and master mind of this defense….Problem is…who you going to get????

  22. Jawain Slaughter Says:

Can we draft offensive lineman to play their natural position please can Mr.Levertt play center
We need more push up front sorry Mr.Hainsey is not a center he should be a tackle

  23. Joe Says:

Can we draft offensive lineman to play their natural position please can Mr.Levertt play center

So you enjoy watching center-quarterback fumbles?

No, you don’t want Leverett at center.

  24. bucsfaninOregon Says:

Hey Bobbie M., you forgot TE.

  25. SBucs Says:

    Fired Men Walking. Clean house.

  26. Buccos Says:

I like Stinnie a lot. Someone on here said that he used to be a wrestler. That would definitely help out in close quarters

  27. Buccos Says:

I wonder if Leverret to RG might not be an upgrade too

  28. Rod Munch Says:

Amazing how much better the run game looks when your guard isn’t missing his assignment on every 3rd block.

Now, if Cody can get stronger (which will happen over time), you might start to have something approaching average NFL blocking.

I said approaching, not actually getting there.

But that only matters if you still think it’s 1970 and you run the ball to win. Meanwhile in 2023, you pass the ball to win, and the Bucs have a good pass blocking line.

  29. orlbucfan Says:

Licht was the GM before Brady got here. Got some real imbeciles posting as usual. If Stinnie is 100% and playing well, let him. And can we go the rest of the week without all the fire-Bowles crap? How about it, joes? I want to hear how the coaches and players are going to outfox the refs?

  30. garro Says:

I’m pulling for the big guy but he and Leverett looked like crap in preseason.
Maybe it was the new offense or that they were trying him at center.

    Go Bucs!

  31. garro Says:

Alot of new geniuous armchair GMs on here today i noticed. Oops just fed the trolls…

I don’t think most where around during the what Joe calls the lost decade when we could not hire any coach or a GM who could figure out how to get home from work much less how to handle an NFL team.

You really so eager to go back to that folks?

    Go Bucs!
