Bucs’ Identity Explained By Todd Bowles

If you’re not sure what kind of team the Bucs are, what their identity is, head coach Todd Bowles has a clear answer for you.
He deliverd it to Dangerous Dan Lucas, the sports chief at WFLA-TV during their weekly sitdown.
Per Bowles, the Bucs need to be more consistent about being themselves.
“I think when we play as who we are, which is a fast, physical, tough, smart, tackling ballclub, a running ballclub that has some play-action invovled, we do ok,” Bowles said.
Are the Bucs really all those things? Joe watches at least six NFL games per week and can’t call the Bucs a physical team. Devin White has lost a level of physicality and the Bucs’ starting corerbacks aren’t consistently willing tacklers. It’s not the most physical group of edge rushers, tight ends and running backs, either.
Bowles also called the Bucs “a running ballclub” and a smart one. Umm, ok, sure.
Joe thinks the Bucs should be forging a new identity. Perhaps their fight and hunger at the end of Thursday’s Bills game was a great start. The Bucs holding the Bills to four consecutive punts to close the game was super impressive.

They haven’t been physical since Suh, JPP & Jensen left. The more defined physical teams like Lions, Philly, Baltimore, Pittsburgh etc have their way with the Bucs.

Bucs are a quick strike passing team (with a dink and dunk square peg QB starting presently) with a bend but don’t break takeaway defense.

I still go back to the pre-season predictions by basically every league expert. The Bucs were not going to be a very good team. And they aren’t. We have to get out of this salary cap hell we are in. We have to make the best of it this season and hope that we can get some new players in here, especially at o-line. And also hope that Dave Canales improves greatly. I almost wish they would have started 1-3 so we would not be on this up-n-down roller coaster ride…..Go Bucs!

What they are is a mediocre ball club. Painful to watch at times (a lot of times recently). But they’re still my team and will always be. Some of the so called fans on this site, particularly those commenting to the open thread on game day, are ready to throw in the towel the first time White dives up the middle for no gain. I’ve endured every year of Bucs football since their inception. Call me a glutton for punishment. But they’re my team and that’s what true fans do. You think fans wearing paper bags over their heads at games enjoy watching their team being beat down? Hell no! But, they still go to games. Come on folks, it’s just a game.

Licht has to be dying inside. He went from being a perennial offensive juggernaut to a participation award under Bowles. He bought into and supported Bowles’ ideology and has been rewarded with historic ineptitude. Bowles has taken the Bucs from sold out games to empty bleachers in less than a 1.5 seasons.

Time to fire this “defensive genius” they’ve been the worst in the league running the ball for 2yrs now and he won’t embrace the pass. He refuses to play to his corners strength because “not everyone can play man” well who picked the defensive players we have? The team is boring and lifeless just as he is. Looking forward to an entire new regime next season including GM. Thanks for all you’ve done Licht but it’s time for you to go as well.

Yup. I have no doubt that’s how Todd WANTS this team to play, but they’re the exact opposite. I’ve never seen a Bucs’ team this slow (the word ‘lumbering’ comes to mind). They’re one of the least physical teams in the league, largely because they’re soft; they lack toughness. Tackling was quite good at the beginning of the year (lots of gang tackling), but it’s gone downhill rapidly since those first couple of wins.
I’m sure that Bowles WANTS to be a running team that used play-action, but this team lacks the talent & toughness to be what he wants. He’d be a lot better off if he had Canales tailor his offensive scheme to more effectively use what talent we actually do have. Same applies to him modifying the defensive scheme.

Don’ t think Dean is unwilling tackler with 35 solo tackles which is tied for fifth in the league. I kind of think playing on the same side as JTS has something to do with that. Where he has slipped a lot

The Bucs are none of the things he describes (or not successfully anyway), not properly equipped for them, and most importantly, not coached or led competently, much less on a Super Bowl level.
Furthermore, the locker room is as confused as his disjointed vision. Locker room was lost all of last season and still not unified and focused. Because there is no…leadership.

That is perhaps the biggest load of BS ever uttered by a Bucs HC at One Buc. Congrats Todd, you did indeed have some stiff competition for this award. Well done, considering the likes of Bennet, Perkins, Williamson, Morris, and Smith.
