Invisible night from Calijah Kancey.
Joe wrote many times this spring that Tampa Bay should have an elite defense if it can find an edge rush.
It hasn’t happened consistently.
Last night against Buffalow, the pass rush deficiencies were glaring.
Up the gut of the defense, rookie defensive tackle Calijah Kancey largely was invisible for the first time in his NFL career. Manbeast DT Vita Vea was on the bench and the Bucs got little off the edge.
Head coach/defensive playcaller Todd Bowles didn’t hold back this morning.
“We didn’t get much pressure at all,” Bowles said. “I thought across the board we struggled a little bit and we gotta have better from all the way around, from outside to inside.”
Through seven games, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka has three sacks (one was Justin Fields holding the ball for an eternity, and another was JTS nearest to a QB running out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage). Anthony Nelson logged his second sacks of the season last night while rookie YaYa Diaby got his first. Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett has two sacks off the edge this season and little-used backup Cam Gil has one.
The edge rush is letting the Bucs down. The edge rushers are on pace for a combined 20 sacks this season. That’s nowhere near enough, especially with Devin White on a 14-game sackless streak.

After the Joe(s) were so incredibly giddy about Clancy and his “sack” — hailing football’s next superstar……kid has a ways to go……and defensive line was sure missing Vita Vea

One play in the first half the Bucs rushed 4 – two players fell down and were rolling around like babies in a crib – Josh Allen had all the time he wanted and completed a long pass down inside the Bucs 5 yard line.
Outside of a few plays it was like that all evening.

Logan Hall and JTS were busts. Why shouldn’t Kancey also be a bust? Seems par fo the course.

That position group was the biggest disappointment IMO. Their offense basically had their way with us early on outside of the red zone. There were some plays where Allen had an insane amount of time to throw and I was losing my mind.
The whole field goal delay of game thing at the end of the 1st half though just ruined the “i think he’s changing” vibe of Bowles and key decision making / killer instincts.
Vita Vea is such a huge impact player. Without him the run defense and pass rush looked so much worse.

Speaking of Devin White…he did nothing all game. I keyed on him almost the entire 2nd half. I saw him walking at one point during a play that got passed him. He did have the stop on 4th down. Okay. Thanks Devin for one play. The dude ran right at Devin so it wasn’t much effort needed and he almost broke Devin’s tackle because Devin tackled him at the shoulder pads. He was close to being run flat over by the RB. He’s the invisible man.

Yeah Tom, the absence of Vita Vea did hurt, I hope he can get healthy in the next 10 days before the Texans game but with Vea it is kind of like a foot one week, a groin the next, kind of curious to see what will make him questionable for the next game. JTS is a bust but Bowles seems intent on playing the guy.
BTW, why all the soft zone? Kind of like just inviting the QB to pick the secondary apart since there is no pass rush. I just hope they add some wrinkles and bring their A game to Houston otherwise CJ Stroud will probably be offensive player of the week if he has all the time in the world to exploit this soft zone, especially if Ryan Neil is still starting.

I was on a group text throughout the game, and I even asked them, was Kancey even active this game? The first time I hear his name is the neutral zone infraction…this f-ing team. Just sloppy football, just seems like we’ve seen this team so many times over the years, self-inflicting and just a lack of discipline, is it that we just draft bone-head players that just can’t get it? The Vikings game was such a rare game, such a tease of the potential we were capable of, it was like watching a unicorn, no offensive false start penalties!? It was absurd. Ever since the losing streak started we’ve been killing ourselves, working behind on 3rd and longs.

After a while I started focusing on JTS and what a downer that was. That guy looks like he should be a Greek statue …of a baseball player. He looks dwarfed by a big lineman. On that play with about 1 1/2 minutes in first half, Bill’s QB had ALL DAY to pass- -no one near him. Where was JTS when pass was thrown? On his hands and knees where the OL was standing over him way away from the play.
Interesting our sack was from Nelson subbing for JTS.
I cannot understand why he is starting or even playing edge rusher. He should be on kickoffs and punts only. The guy is a HUGE bust and Licht is responsible for his draft.

ZERO PRESSURE. EVEN ON BLITZES. This team has been playing absolutely pathetic since the bye week. PATHETIC.
Can someone also explain why the Bills were allowed to repeatedly jump offsides last night without being flagged? I saw at least 4 plays where one of their defenders was over the LOS before the ball was snapped.
Probably the same reason they were allowed to have about 4 different players commit pass interference on the final play without it being called too…

I’m sure Nelson also has shortcomings, but I am nonplussed as to why he isn’t above JTS on the depth chart

Beej, I think the fact that JTS was a first rounder, albeit late, is why they keep trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Ditto for Logan Hall. Time for Licht and the coaching staff to cut bait and run. Nelson is kind of like a journeyman, nothing spectacular but he seems light years ahead of that bust JTS on the playing curve. BTW, the absence of Vea might be why Kancey kind of disappeared.

Kancey: I watched him take on an OG in a run play. He held his position and penetrated. He just needs snaps.
JTS: OMG! I saw him halfass a one-armed tackle attempt on Allen. He was afraid to get hurt. Looks like Tarzan. Plays like Jane. Move on.
Shaq: Great skillset and instincts but he’s lost a step.
Gholston: Old reliable. Still making plays.

Pretty pathetic that any semblance of pressure evaporates when our nose tackle is out of the game. Maybe Licht should learn from past draft failures and quit selecting undersized linemen in both the defensive and offensive sides of the ball. It doesn’t take a savant to figure out that when all of our linemen are 20 LBs lighter or 5 inches shorter than the competition, they’re likely to get bullied.

Devin White is a waste. He’s a lot worse than JTS. If he doesn’t get off his lazy azz, and help LVD out more, cut him next year.

No Vita Vea was the difference. But in the first couple seasons, Vita’s nickname was Velcro because he couldn’t get off the blocks to make a play and he developed. Give the kid some time.

Shaq is a great guy, and I feel sorry for his injury and what happened to his family. But truth be told, his contract is an albatross and taking up a monster share of our cap room on defense. The production certainly does not match the cap hit. If he wasn’t Shaq, he’d be long cut

Our failures on both offense and defense are very simply explained.
We do the exact same thing, week in and week out.
Any given game situation, our opposition knows the one two or three plays we will call.
We are the most predictable team in the league.
And it shows.
