Only a quick look at the gamebook of last night’s loss to Buffalo told the story.
Josh Allen had time to throw. Baker Mayfield did not.
The Bucs, despite entering the game allowing the second-fewest sacks in the league, found out what it is like to block against a team with Super Bowl aspirations.
While Baker Mayfield was only sacked three times, he got hit 10 times.
Allen? The Bucs only hit him three times and put him on the turf twice.
Want to know why the Bucs were playing catch-up all night? Allen had time to move the Bills down the field. Mayfield didn’t have that luxury.

But Joe- you’ve been telling us how amazing our o-line is. How could this be?
i thought they were infallible. Article after article about how little Mayfield has been sacked… even when it’s been pointed out to you that half the reason for the low sack numbers is because Mayfield has been mobile and getting himself out of would-be sacks week after week because the o-line actually isn’t really that good.
As for our defense:WE HAVE NO PASS RUSH. NONE. ZERO. ZILCH. NADA.

Probably because the Bucs defense couldn’t get a sack, couldn’t stop a run, and couldn’t stop a pass until the Bills went into play it safe mode in the 4th quarter?

Baker held onto the ball all night. He was not decisive.

FFS we can see him pitter pattering his feet like a ballerina in the pocket. We see it Joe.
One of the things the Brady preached was having a quiet lower half and it was one of the things that Trask took to heart and adopted from the GOAT.
I know Trask won’t see the field barring injury because Bowles is hard headed, but don’t throw salt in the wound by making excuses for him.
This season is going to be trash enough as it is without us all having to pretend the emperor has clothes.

@Mike S. Baker has always been Nervous Nelly in the pocket. He’s not a pocket QB. His pocket presence is awful. I would also question his football IQ. I know Brady had God level IQ, but Baker can’t read defenses pre or post snap. He doesn’t process well.

Thats nonsense. Its apparent you guys will see and say anything to indict Baker because of Trask. Anyone could see Allen had a clean pocket and time to throw not that he was beating the fast collapse of the pocket with his quick release.
Without Baker pulling Houdini’s every single game this O line EASILY has ten plus more sacks added to its ranking.

I disagree that Baker didn’t have time. I saw Baker dancing around a lot. I also saw several times where he held the ball forever. Pass protection was good.
Your other point, our pressure being terrible, totally agreed. CK was non-existent. I saw the WORST attempt I’ve ever seen at a QB tackle by JTS. Hall did okay collapsing the pocket on a few plays. Yaya had a good game. We really missed VV.

Baker pitter pattered his feet all night. He wasn’t on time and held the ball.
Better than him throwing picks like he historically has done. I guess his game has evolved. Now he eats the ball and tries to scramble for a first down. Not so coincidentally he’s landed on the recent injury report.

why are you trying to sell Baker to the fans ? So the OL was protecting him in pass plays in his three losses at home but not against the Bills ? Then why he sucked in all the four losses with low completions and QBR’s ? He had another batted ball that thanks god it didn’t get intercepted.

I should would like a pocket passer back in there. Something tells me the line would naturally have different dynamics. They (the O line) seems to back up on every play as if by design.

Make a logical Point . Simply saying someone should feel bad about being wrong isn’t one so they can easily disregard you. Of course Baker held the ball and the commentators told you why A) because no one was available B) because the Bills were taking away Godwin and Evans. Think thats a coincidence when your own coach said just this week how he was still looking for a designated third WR?
Look its simple Even in the first five minute of games that we go on to win its the same group whining for Baker to be replaced . Thats why you have no credibility except among the same Traskites. All this outbreak after the game is NOT because we lost but because we were in the game to the end and it was not the 40+ to 3 outcome the traskites were all hoping it would be. You are not whining because it hurt the team to lose a game but as we all KNOW because it hurt Trask’s prospect of starting for Baker to be in the game right to the end.
P.S. Baker has ALWAYS liked to move around and bounce . he is not a stand flat footed in the pocket passer. Don’t like that style Too bad. If you watched him he uses that springing to get away from the rush because running from flat footedness is harder to get acceleration. He also uses it to rock forward to deliver the ball. Claiming his style he has always had is panic is just ignorance of the player. You can see him bouncing in highlights with no one around him and up on the scoreboard even back to college.
It s all there on youtube for your education. He also thrives on rollouts and Canales is beginning to use him like the panthers did with no rollouts and

Tony, yes there were times he was rushed but man he held that ball forever for quite a few plays. Covering Evan’s and Godwin is every DC’s strategy no different than Diggs & David for the Bill’s. The difference is they found open space. Baker has happy feet in the pocket, he is NOT good.

Mayfield can’t see the field or he’s not progressing through his options. He holds onto the ball too long. Seems like he thinks he can have a great stiff arm run to save the day. Not the online. I watched wirfs block a guy all the way around him before got him. But wirfs will be tagged with a bad play in the stat book. Mayfield is not good. But he is our best chance for the #1 pick.

The difference between this years’ and last years’ team is Brady, and he only won 8 games.
I think Baker’s size behind this Oline without a running game, certainly works to his disadvantage. Canales hasn’t been able to adapt to that. I don’t see enough roll-outs for Baker (Bum Knee right now, I know), nor do I see Canales working in up-tempo when we can’t seem to get into a groove… the last 2 offensive coordinators we had in Tampa in almost every game used a no huddle up-tempo to find some rhythm, but not Canales.
Canales is a first year play caller and I have no doubt he’ll get better as we improve the pieces for him, but I don’t think we’re looking at the next Sean McVey either. Btw, unless we manage not to win another game this season, both coaches will return, we will sign Baker on a short-term deal, though we draft a QB. Lot of football left to play. Hang in there guys.

NO THAT’S NOT TRUE. We’ve been bragging about this team’s pass protection. Quarterbacks have pressure but isn’t handling it. I’m tired of seeing this guy throwing to double covered receivers even when he’s not facing pressure. I don’t want to see Trask (yet) but I’ll stop harassing you guys because I’m starting to not care if he’s benched

Yes, Allen has a super fast release but the bucks defensive backfield allowed far too many uncontested receptions. Of all of Allen’s throws, how many went for more than 10 yd in the air (not YAC)?

How long did it take to score on our 2nd touchdown drive in the 4th quarter? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team move that slow. Was that our hurry up offense? Baker didn’t turn it over last night, and that’s the only reason it was kind of close. The bills were just trying to eat up the clock for most of the 2nd half, and won the field position battle handily. Without Vita,we had “zero” pass rush, and Josh had all day to throw. This team has so many problems, its hard to know where to start. I can’t figure out what the defensive game plan was last night. We couldn’t get to the qb, and we couldn’t cover anyone. Guys seemed to be running wide open all night. I would have liked to see the bucs go into a hurry up offense at some point, because what I saw was anything but hurry up…I’ve never seen a team move that slow with so little time left in the game. Clearly we missed Vita, but the defense played lousy. It would be understandable if we were beaten on the back end because of the blitz, but that wasn’t the case. Josh had 4 plus seconds to throw it, and WIDE OPEN recievers all night. It’s just a bad combination. We’ve got problems on both sides of the ball. I don’t see any quick fixes. Let’s play the young guys the rest of the way, and make a trade or two to improve our draft position.

I’m fascinated that people want to throw Baker under the bus when the defensive backfield was awful and rarely played tight on an Bills receiver. The oline collapsed quickly most of the night. They still don’t have the effective running attack, and that forced more pass plays with the corners playing back because the run won’t get anywhere. Baker played a pretty clean game considering the pressure in his face all night.
It also doesn’t ever help if you start most of your drives inside your 10…

@mike S, you do realize the Baker Mayfield has more yards rushing each game than the RB’S and on top of that Baker Mayfield has produced more yards and more touchdowns to Mike Evans than Tom Brady threw at this same point last year? In fact if Evans gets only 1 more touchdown this year, he ties his total from the last year. Point being that Mayfield is the one truly leading this team and if Baker was named Tom Brady, we wouldn’t have this discussion as the GOAT got so many passes from everyone when he stunk last year. Yet just looking at numbers, the players are getting more yards, and more td’s than they did with the GOAT last year. Hell against the bills we would have won but someone, won’t mention his name, was in the endzone open, with no one in front of him, last play of the game and the ball literally hit him in the hands and he didn’t catch it. I see so many times Baker throws it, it hits the targets hands, even mike Evans and they don’t catch the ball, is that mayfields fault? I don’t think so. When all is said and done, Baker might be the best option our team has had for a couple years as Baker is definitely better than last years brady….

Where is this great canales offensive coaching?? From where I’m standing he brought nothing to this team. We have great receivers and no plays to get them any catches! Overall it was hard to watch as the entire game was horrible.

Anyone who thinks Trask will be successful behind this line is delusional. Baker isn’t great, but his ability to elude sacks is far greater than Trask. Trask would get sacked 8 to 10 times per game with this line.

Ehhh, the Bills coaching staff realizes that Allen can create while moving, the Bucs realize that Baker can escape so they don’t move him. I mean Baker hit the top of a blitzing DBs helmet while he was ducking to make a tackle. Get him outside the pocket, wasn’t that something Canales talked about in his preseason pressers

No that is because the Bucs played soft coverage most of the game and Allen knew where to go with the ball pre snap. At one point he was getting the ball out the fastest in his entire career. Once we tighted up our coverage in the redzone or the end of the game he didnt do as well. That is on BOWLES.
Mayfield looked lost again. A blitz is coming and no adjustments no check down. very few screens to slow down the bills blitzing. There is a reason brady always makes an Oline better then what they are and that is all pre snap work.

I don’t want to hear Baker being pressured. He’s pressured no more than any other QB. He’s simply not a good QB. Every team that he has been on has figured it out. We are seeing it early on. He locks onto his original read and the opposing secondary jumps on it. He doesn’t go through progressions. Watch his footwork. He’s got happy feet and is never ready to throw. When moving around the pocket he doesn’t have the wherewithal to look up field and find a receiver like good QBs do. Instead, he always tucks and runs. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. You have 10 days to get Trask ready. We see what we have with Baker, you have got to see what you have in Trask.

@Tony Marks. I am not expecting Trask to be Brady but stop with the defense of Baker. It’s illogical. I already explained just some of his shortcomings. No pun intended. The people calling for Trask aren’t Traskites. They are simply asking to see what he has to offer. Then, without a shadow of a doubt, the team will know. Right now you are wasting away the talent of this team with an incompetent QB. We are going nowhere fast with Baker. They showed several plays with wide open receivers before Baker was under pressure. He’s also under pressure because he is clueless as to how to hit a hot read or a checkdown. The book is out on Baker and it’s one I’m sick of reading. there just simply is no debate here. It’s recklessly irresponsible if Bowles and Canary keep Baker in.

For all the football experts on this page claiming that Baker Mayfield is not a good quarterback and he must be benched etc…..so you mean to tell me that all of you “Baker haters” know more about football than all the head coaches and assistant coaches in college and in the NFL who evaluated Baker first hand and collectively said he was a good quarterback??? Give the guy a break…while at Cleveland, in 4 years, Baker had 3 head coaches and 4 different offensive coordinators, then two head coaches and one offensive coordinator at Carolina, and one head coach and one offensive coordinator at the Rams….now he comes to the Bucs, a new team, a new head coach, a new offensive coordinator!!! Name me one quarterback in NFL history who had that many changes in their first five years in the league!!! In less than 6 years, Baker played under 7 head coaches, 7 offensive coordinators, and 200+ teammates, 7 different play books, 7 different offensive lines, many wide receivers, tight ends, etc….and you (the Baker haters) sit there and think you can do a better job and none of of you lived Baker’s experience and what he went through to date….enough said!!!

There is no way you look at that game and say its Bakers fault. I watched too many dropped passes. Too many run attempts with only two, TWO that made significant gains and of course one of the two plays was called back for a penalty. Any QB put into this same situation wouldn’t do any better. Just admit your Baker biased. Lots of things went wrong that game but Baker wasn’t one of them.

Wow! When reading some of these posts I was amazed at the short memories some fans have.
Last season with no running game & a porous O-Line, a QB with 7 super bowl rings, who is regarded by many as “The Goat”, won a grand total of 8 games!
Why would you think Baker Mayfield would fare better? Or that the inexperienced Kyle Trask could do better than Brady or Mayfield?

Y’all can say what you want about Baker, I’m rooting for him as long as he’s QB1, whether I like him as a player or not.
What i want to say is, you can’t compare him to Allen last night, they had a graphic that he was getting the ball out in less than 3 seconds, or something quick, faster than any time in his career (IIRC). He was getting the ball out much faster than mayfield. What happened last night was not all on the line, they weren’t good but the two, QB and line, tangoed. One QB was helping his line and the other helped make the line look bad.

I’m 67 years old n I’ve been a Gator fan for probably 55 years with that being said I’d like to see Trask at qb but with the lack of protection Mayfields getting n he’s way more elusive than Trask so in turn Trask probably would of been sacked six times. We the Bucs need to protect the qb better.

Shaun King would have done better than Trent Dilfer. Then and now. Trask>Mayfield. I like Mayfield attitude and that he owns up to his faults, I think he can’t see over the lineman. He’s been swatted at the line quite a bit. He’s a good player, a good quarterback but they would need more time as a team for him to find their rhythm. Who remembers Brad Johnson before or after 03?That was a great hailmary it looked like Godwin got tripped up though.

You can see it plainly in the run game ….run up the middle..3 yards.
And as soon as one thing goes wrong or just doesn’t go our way you can see the body language plain as day….defeat.

Just finished watching the All-22. Yes, Allen was getting the ball out in 2.5 seconds. BECAUSE HIS RECEIVERS WERE OPEN. We were playing soft coverage at least 7 yards off the man. All night long.
Now, let’s watch Baker. Same 2.5 seconds – nobody open, tight man coverage. All game. at 4 seconds he’s still searching for open players. And he didn’t have 4 seconds most of the time – 10 QB hits in the game. No one can succeed like that.
And to think Trask is going to be better – boys, I want some of that weed you are smoking.
