“He’s Not Good”
October 23rd, 2023A former Bucs right guard doesn’t like what he’s seeing from the current Bucs right guard.
Tampa Bay’s starter at the position is rookie Cody Mauch, the second-round pick out of North Dakota State.
The league has caught up to Mauch in a hurry, says ex-Bucs right guard Ian Beckles (1990-1996). Beckles was barking about Mauch on his In The Trenches podcast after the soul-sucking loss to the Falcons on Sunday.
“He’s not good. Fighting, but he’s not good,” Beckles said of Mauch.
Beckles said Mauch has been exposed the past three games after being solid Weeks 1 and 2.
“Now there’s film on you and you’re showing what you can do well and what you can’t do well — seeing you can’t pick up a stunt. They’re exposing him. They’re seeing he can’t stop a bull rush. They’re bullrushing the sh*t out of Cody Muach. And I’m talking about he’s reeling. It’s tough in there, Yo.”
Joe sees Mauch’s struggles. They’re somewhat like Luke Goedeke’s issues last season at left guard, minus Tom Brady creating all kinds of urgency to demand a better pass blocker on the field.
Joe’s not worried about Mauch after six games and a bye week. But he should be showing marked improvement come November.
Beckles isn’t worried about Mauch, either, though Beckles seems to think the Bucs can’t count on getting much more from him through this season.
October 23rd, 2023 at 4:11 pm
Beckles down on a Buc. That’s a surprise. He’s generally such an upbeat fellow.
October 23rd, 2023 at 4:12 pm
Yep
I think he will improve in the next few years after NFL offseason diet and weight training.
Godecke is much thicker and stronger than this time last year.
Hainsey has maxed out on diet and weight training and he is simply not big and strong enough for center
October 23rd, 2023 at 4:16 pm
Our o-line is strongest at the edges (tackles) and gets weaker as you move in, with center clearly being the weakest link.
That’s not a great recipe for running the football, especially when you have so many runs called behind the C / G…
October 23rd, 2023 at 4:16 pm
Next year may be what this year should of been.
October 23rd, 2023 at 4:16 pm
He basically said that most rookies aren’t good. It wasn’t necessarily a knock on Mauch but obviously there’s room for improvement for a rookie as teams get more tape on you.
October 23rd, 2023 at 4:20 pm
The amount of rookie linemen on either side of the ball that are great out of the box is only a couple of handfuls.
Many of them grow into their bodies in a year or two. The is also the rookie wall coming, when they have to play in a half dozen more games than ever before.
The experience might be wonderful but it might be good to pull him and chuck Stinnie in before Mauch hurts himself and starts to over think himself.
October 23rd, 2023 at 4:23 pm
just because he has red hair doe not make him jensen……..
the teeth thing might look cool for the draft…but it does not make him tuff.
he does not have the size plain and simple.
put Marpet, Jensen and Cappa on a stage
now Put Hainsey, Mauch and Feiler on the same stage.
You can look at them and tell the difference! no need to even get in a stance
mauch is small, feiler is old and not enough beef and hainsey…well he’s a back up. none of these guys will EVER instill fear or impose their will.
they are serviceable provided you do not play the game in a way that demands them to impose their will….
but this coach is just too damn stupid.
hell forest gump even changed his saying….
stupid is as toilet bowl does as mama used to say
October 23rd, 2023 at 4:24 pm

Sounds like his struggles are coming from him having to learn how to play a different position than he did in college! Totally Jason Licht’s fault thinking you can just plug and play college tackles into NFL guards. All of the problems Beckles stated about Mauch can be fixed through better blocking assignment recognition coaching and strength training. Guards have to deal with more, stronger, brute force bull rushers and crazy line stunts and gap assignment protections than tackles normally do. I blame Mauch’s bad performance on bad coaching (i.e. Dave Canales) and bad management (i.e. Jason Licht)
October 23rd, 2023 at 4:41 pm
Jack Clark., I agree 100%
October 23rd, 2023 at 4:43 pm
Mauch is a rookie 6 games in. Mayfield’s a seasoned vet and White has at least 20 games under his belt, Beckles critique those two 😊. I remember when Beckles started he wasn’t a hell of a OT either he grew into who he became
October 23rd, 2023 at 4:43 pm
let this guy have one offseason of NFL weight training before we call him a bust… geez
October 23rd, 2023 at 4:43 pm
Not Concerned about Mauch.
Year 1 for new OL is tough (see Goedeke). He’ll put in the work this offseason. If they don’t cut it year 2, then it’s time for a change (see Hainsey). The right side is locked in for 2024, but we’ll likely have a new Center and Left Guard next year.
October 23rd, 2023 at 4:46 pm
Alex Cappa sucked his first year too. Turned out to be pretty good.
October 23rd, 2023 at 4:48 pm
Also not having Jenson this year really hurts the interior because he was the leader of the Oline. Told everybody what to do and showed them how to do it. Hainsey is not that rock.
October 23rd, 2023 at 4:52 pm
And he is not the only one. Pay attention. This is why Baker has people in his face right away. RB’s are not good but tell me how they get hit in shotgun as soon as the ball is handed off for a Loss. This is the Oline. Baker is the one avoiding sacks. Can Trask do that ? I don’t know. I do know he is a pocket passer not a runner. Only time would tell.
October 23rd, 2023 at 4:59 pm
No kidding, the guy shouldn’t be in the NFL. He should not be starting and at best should be on the practice squad. Sad because there are undrafted players from major conferences that didn’t even get drafted that are better than Mauch. Along with JTS he is another bust that should not be on the field.
October 23rd, 2023 at 5:01 pm
Some of you may not like what Beckles has to say but it does not make it any less true. I paid close attention to the OL and Mauch and Hainsey were getting beat regularly by ATL. Yesterday was an old fashion woodshed kinda day.
October 23rd, 2023 at 5:10 pm
I always felt Cody Muach was a lightweight. Doesn’t seem like he has the frame to add a needed 15-20 lbs. I think he would be better suited at center than guard.
October 23rd, 2023 at 5:13 pm
The entire interior line stinks. Its what we expected. We can get other RB’s that wont solve the issue that the interior LG,C,RG cant get push. They are scheming up the pass pro and Baker has the ability to scramble a bit which is helping the low sack numbers but if you watch close our guys are routinely getting blown up in the middle.
October 23rd, 2023 at 5:23 pm
I thought this was intriguing:
NFC South Teams in the 2023 NFL Offensive Line Rankings Through Week 6
Atlanta Falcons (Rank: 5, Preseason Rank: 3)
Key Stats: Ninth-best pressure rate (22.3%).
Analysis: The Falcons have had a strong start to the season, especially in run-blocking. The rookie left guard Matthew Bergeron needs to improve, but overall, the team’s pressure rate is impressive.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Rank: 16, Preseason Rank: 28)
Key Stats: Fewest sacks allowed in 2023 (4).
Analysis: Tristan Wirfs has been a standout, especially after switching from right to left tackle. Luke Goedeke has also been solid at right tackle. The interior needs some work, but the tackles are doing a great job in pass protection.
Carolina Panthers (Rank: 27, Preseason Rank: 17)
Key Stats: Blitzed the seventh most in 2023 (58).
Analysis: The Panthers have a young line that hasn’t quite lived up to expectations. They have allowed a considerable amount of pressures and have been targeted frequently by blitzes.
New Orleans Saints (Rank: 23, Preseason Rank: 21)
Key Stats: Fifth-most sacks allowed in 2023 (17).
Analysis: The Saints’ offensive line has struggled, particularly at the left tackle position. Erik McCoy has been the bright spot, but overall, the team has allowed too many sacks.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Deep Dive
Rank: 16
Preseason Rank: 28
Key Players:
Tristan Wirfs has been excellent, especially in pass protection, allowing just three pressures on 192 pass-blocking snaps. His PFF grade is 82.1 for tackles and has the best pass-blocking grade (89.9) of any tackle.
Luke Goedeke at right tackle has allowed just one sack and eight pressures this season.
Areas of Concern:
The interior of the offensive line could use some improvement. While the tackles have been strong, tightening up the interior could provide a more balanced line.
Stat to Know:
Tampa Bay has allowed the fewest sacks in 2023, with just 4. This is a strong indicator that the pass protection, especially at the tackle positions, is highly effective.
Considering Tampa Bay was ranked 28th in the preseason and has climbed to 16th through Week 6, they’ve shown significant improvement. The tackles are a particular strength, and if they can shore up the interior, they will have a very formidable offensive line as the season progresses.
October 23rd, 2023 at 5:26 pm
Look at the bright side, at least we found a LT.
October 23rd, 2023 at 5:29 pm
O’Cyrus Torrence was widely considered the best Guard prospect in this past draft. He’s 6’5 and 350lbs. Bills fans are over the moon with how he’s been playing at RG.
Licht had the chance to draft him but selected Mauch instead. Now I think Mauch will eventually turn into a solid player, but this is just another example of Licht getting cute and proving he’s the smartest guy in the room. We had a shot at an elite plug-n-play player that has size, Div I experience and actually played the position he was drafted to play. He didn’t require 2-3 years of development like most of Licht’s project linemen.
October 23rd, 2023 at 5:35 pm
Cody Mauch is the scapegoat this week. Sparing the rest of the team of their inadequacies.
October 23rd, 2023 at 5:41 pm
i though we had stinnie in the mix…
where is stinnie?…didn’t we sign him
he was always a decent fit
October 23rd, 2023 at 5:43 pm
swap mauch out for stinnie if it’s such a freakin’ issue…
his play has dropped off a bit since the first couple of games, and teams are studying his film, but bench a rook if necessary – and get big stinnie up in there !
October 23rd, 2023 at 5:45 pm
didn’t we lose cappa for a stint with a broken arm or something a few years back and stinnie came in straight beasting – and the team didn’t miss a beat…during the superbowl run he was phenominal…
da fugg is going on around here…
where is big stinnie ???
October 23rd, 2023 at 5:46 pm
I think Ian Beckles is just getting grumpy. He’s getting older, and the fish probably ain’t biting.
October 23rd, 2023 at 5:47 pm
also mauch looks kinda weak…
obviously he’s a big strong dude, don’t get me wrong…
but when you see the linemen lining up and going into and out of the huddle, he just still looks like he has a college guys physique, compared to an nfl lineman’s body…
he needs to bulk and strengthen up a bit over the next couple of off seasons
October 23rd, 2023 at 5:52 pm
Cody Mauch’s current PFF grade is 43.4.
That is abysmal.
Robert Hainsey grade is 52.5
Matt Feiler’s grade is 54.3
The entire middle of this line is below mediocre and Cody Mauch is struggling the most.
Replace him with Stinnie of Nick Leverett and see if things improve at all.
I’m not calling Mauch a bust at all. It takes several years to develop an offensive lineman. He will be OK if he adds about 15 pounds and maintains his RAS.
I believe Mauch will be moving to Center within the next season or so.
October 23rd, 2023 at 5:54 pm
Hi Bucs fans change of subject for 20 seconds. I here Michigan football may be in a little of trouble Do you think Harbaugh will bolt or be run out of town? If so do you think Tampa is a good fit. Hope Bowles can right the ship I don’t think continuous change its not good for the team but, I am just saying
October 23rd, 2023 at 6:06 pm
also can’t we swap out leverrett at center…doesn’t he have center experience if i’m correct…i recall him being in there at times with the issues…
swap out leverrett and stinnie at center and right guard…
and maybe leave feiler for the moment
October 23rd, 2023 at 6:07 pm
with the jensen issues*
October 23rd, 2023 at 6:14 pm
Maybe hire a Sumo Wrestler
October 23rd, 2023 at 6:16 pm
I think it’s time to hire a coach for the long haul. This organization got it right with Arians but it was temporary. The coaching search needs to begin now. This up/down BS isn’t going to cut it. Licht is only as good as the coach that’s working with him to make good decisions.
October 23rd, 2023 at 6:17 pm
i want king kong bundy as my center,
and the samoans to bookend him as the guards…
of course with bigs wirfs and the glass eater at tackle…
that’s my dream OL 🙂
October 23rd, 2023 at 6:50 pm
He needs an offseason training strength and adding more bulk. Probably won’t see much improvement this season as far as being bullrushed goes.
October 23rd, 2023 at 7:11 pm
Popcorn Mike, Beckles was a guard not a tackle.
October 23rd, 2023 at 7:29 pm
We need to understand how this is Baker’s fault
October 23rd, 2023 at 7:30 pm
I hate it when people pick on rookies.
October 23rd, 2023 at 7:33 pm
Exactly. An offseason in an NFL weightroom and he will be fine.
October 23rd, 2023 at 7:45 pm
We have 13 rookies on this team and several are starters or playing serious time. This was going to be a year of growing pains. And you have a brand new and VERY different offense and philosophy AND a new quarterback…. it’s a recipe for exactly what you’re seeing on offense. Time and experience (and an offseason afterwards) will pay dividends next year. Yep – it sucks. But you gotta stick with it in the belief that it’ll pay off next year. There is every reason to believe that.
October 23rd, 2023 at 7:46 pm
Some of you women in here acting super emotional like he was talking about your family and spinning the very direct and specific message in to a figment of your brains going wild in fight or flight mode.
1. No one is calling him a bust yet. No one, and not what ian said
2. The fact that he needs an offseason is more spin, and literally IS NOT THE POINT. We arent talking about the offseason, we arent talking about next yr, we arent talking about 3 yrs from now.
Let me impart a succinct message for some of you: he is not, in any way good. He is not, in any way average. He is bad RIGHT NOW and he is a liability right now period point blank. There is no other way around it. Save your “yea buts” for someone that cares. Stay on the point of what Beckles was saying.
October 23rd, 2023 at 8:12 pm
Doesn’t help when the C is soft and LG is trash
October 23rd, 2023 at 8:17 pm
Pete and Mort make good points.
Yeah, I get it, it’s frustrating after starting 3-1 but we were supposed to be god awful and we’ve exceeded expectations.
Baker probably isn’t the long term solution at QB but let the rest of the team learn on the job and get better long term.
We’re 3-3
I think most of us would have been happy with that 7-8 weeks ago.
The sky is not falling……… it’s maybe just cloudy as f#%k.
Go Bucs!
October 23rd, 2023 at 8:25 pm
Not Mauch’s fault he should have never been put on the field as a starter. The guy needs to be on the practice squad. He is getting beat four ways to hell and doesn’t know how to stop D linemen and LB’s on bull rushes. Overmatched and the coaches are doing nothing to help him. Need at least two TE sets. Overall the Oline is getting exposed and I don’t think the coaches are addressing the situation.
October 23rd, 2023 at 8:27 pm
Richard, doesn’t matter he played OL and wasn’t a hell of a OL man when he first started
October 23rd, 2023 at 8:39 pm
That plucky Licht…thinking he can find another Marpet ( small school ) and Jensen ( flaming red lid ) by trading up for this goof? The Simply Red Offense just needs a Trask to hit rock bottom.
October 23rd, 2023 at 8:46 pm
I think we all are a little frustrated with the Bucs play over the past few games. But let’s just hope Bowles get that B A syndrome and tell the players to theirs faces you ain’t playing worth a s… so s… or get off the pot. It worked well with Fornette and others. We see what Fornette did and we went to a Super Bowl. Not saying this will work for Bowles but it’s worth a try
October 23rd, 2023 at 8:57 pm
I ain’t gonna sh!t on a rookie. He’s getting valuable experience and will hit the weights in the off season.
October 23rd, 2023 at 9:02 pm
I’d forgotten Super Bowl winning Aaron Stinnie was even on the team. It would seem likely he is CURRENTLY superior to Mauch. Bucs braintrust HAS to feel Mauch will be an all-pro with enough experience, which feeds my suspicion this is a throwaway season to burn cap money and train up newbies
October 23rd, 2023 at 9:12 pm
Ian wouldn’t be Ian unless he’s ripping someone.
Mauch’s strength is mobility and athleticism – so bull rush makes sense.
Makes me wonder though.
This line is mobile and that is a strength, why aren’t they firing out and pulling more on run plays? Seems they run north and south behind their guards mostly. See many defenders slipping blocks and hitting backs at the LOS.
I’m going to look at the replay of this game and come back and tell you what I see.
October 23rd, 2023 at 9:12 pm
I hope it’s as simple as ‘just needs an off-season to add weight and strength.” That hasn’t really worked for Hainsey, JTS or Hall the last few years. Let’s also remember, he’s an old rookie – 24.
October 23rd, 2023 at 9:15 pm
Before you know nothing fans chime in saying he needs another year in the weight room… you realize this is a 24-25 year old rookie, right? He’s not getting any stronger. The difference between 21 and 24 isn’t just three. It’s a ton of time in the weight room and you don’t just put on mass and strength at 25 like you do at 21.
October 23rd, 2023 at 10:00 pm
He is a rookie, same guy who is down on him has also said that all rookies suck.
October 23rd, 2023 at 10:08 pm
Hey Joe, you got a lot of milage off this very offensive headline and story. I agree with most that you are way over the top with this crap. Calling out a rookie that is trying his best and will improve put you in the smut column. You’re better than that Joe although you also said Brady is probably happy the Bucs are losing. Where do you get this stuff.
October 23rd, 2023 at 10:38 pm
Pretty sure we have way bigger problems than a first year rook trying to learn the offensive line position. You know like Ryan Neal and R. White who can only catch the ball but not run.
October 23rd, 2023 at 10:48 pm
Joe directly quoted a man who played right guard himself in the NFL. If this irritates you, you should email Ian Beckles (or listen to his podcast) to find out exactly why Beckles thinks Mauch is not playing well.
If Joe is going to shut out former NFL players who speak about the Bucs, then what’s the point of even having this site?
October 23rd, 2023 at 10:58 pm
I don’t normally agree with Beckles as his takes are normally awful – but I do agree on this one. Cody was fine in the pass game early on, but seems to be getting worse – or the level of opponents has just been getting better. In any case, I think his issue is just strength – he visually just doesn’t look that big compared to other guys. I think he’s just a classic small school guy who needs to get stronger, and I don’t have any doubt that will happen, but it will likely be next year before he gets there.
In the meantime, this team isn’t going anywhere, so let him keep playing and learning. I think he’ll be a good player in the long run, Licht’s record on offensive linemen tells you that’s the case, but it might take a little bit (like with Hainsey, Cappa, Luke).
October 23rd, 2023 at 11:10 pm
Purdy looked like Baker Mayfield in crunch time, just terrible.
October 23rd, 2023 at 11:15 pm
Dang this is like Field of Dreams, “If you build it they will come”.
Only it’s, say something bad about a guy and every infuriated Bucs fan will agree
Let’s just all follow each other off a cliff.
October 23rd, 2023 at 11:50 pm
I have an idea, let’s take Mauch out and put in the guy that started the Super Bowl for us at right guard,
October 23rd, 2023 at 11:50 pm
He was a LT now playing RG as a rookie in the NFL. Everyone hand wringing over All-pro Wirfs moving sides, this kid is doing that and positions. It’s nuts. I’m amazed it’s holding together this well tbh.
October 24th, 2023 at 12:29 am

———–
Why? It’s not like this team is going anywhere. He’s your long term starter, so let him learn to play, and he will get better, it’s not like he’s awful and missing his assignments and such, he’s just physically outmatched at the moment. So let him play, get stronger, and he will improve.
Plus he’s a rookie. I think people are spoiled at how good Ali Marpet was and think everyone should be him, but most small school guys take a little time to develop.
October 24th, 2023 at 3:40 am
maybe they should hire ali marpet to be the new OL coach…
he’s currently on the radio talking bucs at 5pm on mondays, and maybe other days too…
so he’s still involved with the bucs…
maybe get his azz in the building to show these young whippersnappers a few moves
October 24th, 2023 at 3:56 am
Beck is like most talking heads, ready to supply the requisite knee jerk reaction for the week of misery until next weeks misery or elation is provided. Kinda sad coming from a former player. I would imagine most players in the locker room need to be more even keeled and not ready to jump off the skyway from week to week. But also maybe after winning a few games they(Baker)won’t be so eager to go on a media parade of victory¿ I guess it goes both ways. Don’t get too high or too low.
October 24th, 2023 at 7:25 am
Don’t listen to Becky
Just tring to remain relevent. And grab some clicks.
Go Bucs!
October 24th, 2023 at 10:16 am
If Jensen were healthy, we would have one of the better lines in the league. The team is making the best of it with the players we have available. Currently, Hainsey is the best center we have on the roster. I think Hainsey is a starting caliber guard, but he is yet again taking one for the team and playing center. Its been a while, but this franchise struggled at the center position before we acquired Jensen. Marpet had problems there as well, and when he retired, the bottom fell out.
October 24th, 2023 at 11:04 am
“Purdy looked like Baker Mayfield in crunch time, just terrible.”…Rod Munch
Such BS. Purdy has the ball with ~50 seconds and no time outs and he throws a desperation pass with everyone knowing he has to throw. That interception was not on Purdy.
October 24th, 2023 at 5:50 pm
People were over the moon about Cody when he was drafted something I never understood. He was essentially handed the starting job. If leverette couldn’t beat this guy out. Is Cody the Luke of 2023. Sit him and let him learn
