Ian Beckles On Luke Goedeke: “I Was Ready To Light Him Up”
October 21st, 2023JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman believes the most improved Bucs player is right tackle Luke Goedeke.
A man who logged many a game on the Bucs’ offensive line wearing the creamsicles his entire Bucs, local sports personality Ian Beckles, would probably agree.
Still, Beckles said on his podcast “In the Trenches” this week that he was outraged listening to Goedeke poke the bear that is Lions star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, who Beckles believes is a top-four defensive end in the league. Beckles thought for sure Goedeke woke up a sleeping giant when Goedeke said last week that he’s played better defensive ends this season.
Instead of unloading on Goedeke, Beckles gave Goedeke major props for owning Hutchinson on Sunday.
“I was ready to light him up,” Beckles said. “That’s just not wise. Why do you want to get somebody riled up, a good football player riled up? I didn’t want to get John Randle riled up. I didn’t want to get Reggie White riled up or Chester McGlockton. None of them cats.
“Do NOT rile people up! So I was watching [Goedeke] all game long. … Goedeke played his ass off.”
Beckles’ analysis of Goedeke was one of many Bucs observations after their loss to the Lions.
* On the defense: “Defensively, especially with [our] offense that can’t move the ball like [Sunday], I don’t think we played poorly defensively. I really don’t. “
* On Baker Mayfield: “Baker Mayfield, he was a little bit off. He didn’t play well OK? But he didn’t play any worse than anyone else out there. But none of it was pretty. … Baker Mayfield is what he is. He’s going to have some games like [Sunday]. I would say the first four games three of them he played well and one he played poorly. Now he has two games where he played poorly and three good games. That is probably what you are going to get at the end of the year. … He may play well and we can still lose. That may happen. … Every ball that went 15 yards didn’t look good for Baker Mayfield. … I still like his fight. We still have to play better around Baker.”
* On Calijah Kancey: “I didn’t even know what number he was, to be honest with you. But every time he plays he makes noise. He can’t play a lot because he is not ready. He didn’t go through training camp so he can’t play 60 plays, obviously. The kid makes plays. Every time I see him in there, he makes plays.
* On return specialist Deven Thompkins: “I like the way he returns kicks. He’s got a little fearless to him. We need that. We’ve had too many poeple tippy-toeing. I don’t like that.”
* Beckles, of course, had special venom for his favorite rented mule Joe Tryon-Shoyinka. Beckles cannot understand why JTS suits up on gamedays. “If I block a pass, you know what that means if you are a defensive lineman? You are blocked and your feet are shut. I don’t know if Lawrence Taylor ever blocked a pass. Literally. Derrick Thomas, I don’t think he ever blocked a pass, he was going like a bat out of hell to the quarterback. If you stop and jump, then it means your pass rush is over. That’s something that Vita Vea does.” Beckles said, in so many words, JTS does not belong on an NFL field and the Bucs are better off putting in a dime that covers receivers rather than have JTS flailing while trying to get a pass rush or cover someone in pass coverage. “It’s sad to me. … Pull the plug. … He cannot play.”
* On punter Jake Camarda: “He may be our best player.”
* On tomorrow’s]game the Dixie Chicks: The game against the Falcons is crew-SHUL. You lose to the Falcons, it’s going straight downhill. … Lose to the Falcons and it’s going to get hairy real quick.
* On the offense: “We had too many third-and-longs. We aren’t built that way. No team is built that way. … Offense not yet consistently efficient.”
* Beckles knocked Todd Bowles for allowing a team to look sluggish after a bye week. Said that should not be tolerated. “That’s on coaching.”
* He thinks Bucs receivers are slightly overrated and is worried about Mike Evans’ dropsies. Said the Bucs are not physical offensively and lack speed.
* Starting to wonder about safety Ryan Neal but thought he was used as a scapegoat on Sunday. “He had perfect coverage on Jameson Williams.” Still, Beckles said he is not yet sold on Neal.
* Said Vita Vea does not look “flattering” wearing creamsicle. Still, Beckles wants the Bucs to continue to wear the creamsicles once a year and will not tolerate anyone who dogs the creamsicles.
* Beckles is beginning to think Shaq Barrett is a little too inconsistent. “Shaq Barrett has to be present. Shaq Barrett, I have love for Shaq Barrett, but we have to hear your name brother. We’ve got to get more from Shaq Barrett.”

We knew there would be growing pains this year. A totally revamped O-line, new QB, new OC. Last Sunday was ugly, but we have seen worse. The sky is not falling, the season isn’t over and it’s only a third of the way through the season. Cheer up, people. I will be very surprised if we lose to the Falcons.

Cannot keep rushing 3 into 6 and playing zone on 3rd and long. More man and heavy pressure on 3rd and long, have to learn to get off the field. Time of possession fatigues the D unnecessarily. Baker cannot keep missing wide open receivers that are behind everybody.

I actually agree with everything he says…..except for Camarda……he’s a close second to Wirfs.

They’ve got three big, good cornerbacks. Why they don’t press more is a mystery. I thought that’s why they made Dean a priority. Too clever by half?

Camarda by far is the best athlete on the team. I thought Wirfs was, but it’s Camarda by a lot.

He is Right on. Probably the best commentary I have ever heard from him over the years. Thx JOE

Was just watching (“elsewhere”) an all-22 analysis on 13 running plays from last week, very enlightening. 4 of the 13 could be considered “effective” Every ineffective running play except ONE (Vaughn picked wrong gap) someone blew their blocking assignment, allowing an unblocked defender to blow up the play. 3 of the 8 failed blocks were Otten, 1 Goedeke, 2 Wirfs. The others were either Goedeke of Hainsey failing to get off the double-team of the nose guard to move up to the LB

Love Mr. Beckles analysis. I wish he and Lee could do a pod together. They are both impassioned about football and it’s truly beautiful and refreshing to hear Beckles keep it as real as he does. Great listen, doesn’t sugar coat anything, and flat out calls it like he sees it. Love his stories of playing against Reggie White and rooming w John Randle for a minute. This guys makes great pods and has truly honest takes. I appreciated the way he called out soft play on the defensive line during the post decade. Especially the soft ass mentality. Preach, Mr. Beckles, love your content, takes, and respect for the game.

Beckles you were sub average so you were afraid to rile up opponents !
This Goedeke kid, don’t know how he will pan out but he bad the guts to speak up and he talked the talk then walked the walk. Kudos to him .

Bucs gotta start passing morr on 1st downs to stay out of 3rd and longs.

I agree with Beckles on one major point: lose to the Falcons, and the season starts swirling down the toilet.
With 3 wins and a potential lurking tank, maybe the Caleb Williams watch is just warming up.
(Queue Mora’s playoff statement)
I’m still not at all a believer in Bowles.

JTS is JAG at best
October 21st, 2023 at 11:17 am
It’s the interior 3 that collapses
Beginning with Hainsey
October 21st, 2023 at 11:40 am
Say whatever you guys want but it doesn’t change the fact that JTS is currently our best EDGE player and it isn’t even close
October 21st, 2023 at 11:50 am
Hainsey is the weak link on the line. Center should be a priority for the draft along with running back.

Every lineman and (tight end) is responsible for a particular block, and if ANY of them fails, play goes nowhere. Practically EVERY running play one of them does just that, quite often the tight end, which is why I suspect Durham is being given a look. The fact he’s slow in the 40 isn’t such a big deal there. Otton is a HORRIBLE blocker
October 21st, 2023 at 12:54 pm
I have to agree with beej that Otton is just a JAG. Durham probably deserves a chance. Especially in the red zone.
October 21st, 2023 at 2:03 pm
Bring the Payne. Yes Please. Otton is a disaster.
JTS is NOT our beat edge rusher, that’s laughable.
Just because he has more sacks doesn’t mean he is BETTER.
Give YaYa those snaps and he has more.
Hell, one sack for JTS was running Goff out of bounds 1 yard short of the LOS.
A QB scrambles and he gets a sack every once in a while, but he hasn’t blown up a Tackle or rushed around the edge like Josh Allen or anything close.
He is taking up a spot and Licht needs to check his EGO.
It was a luxury pick MOVE ON.
I really don’t think these coaches are a good evaluator of talent.
Tucker should get 15-20 carries.
Otton should get 20-25 snaps maybe.
Neal should be replaced by Dee
Dean should be replaced by Zyon.
Please play Dime and remove JTS.
YaYa should play A LOT MORE
Rock Jarrett should never block for a WR screen again
White should never catch a WR screen again
Thompkins needs to run double move routes in the middle short like Kirk did on Thursday.
If Payne ends up making a difference, that’s another one.
And yes, throw in the possibility that with Trask, we might have the same record or better.
You don’t think he could have hit Palmer?
We might have more sacks, but I bet he would have more TD passes.
In the end, those are simply too many misses by a team who doesn’t even need to FIND more talent, they are on the freaking team.

Shaq has always been a bit inconsistent to be honest… but then he’ll have monster games too.
As for last Sunday, I assume he was still feeling ill as he did look a bit weaker overall. He’s the last of our OLBs that I’m worried about.
October 21st, 2023 at 8:00 pm
Cut JTS he’s horrible he’s not strong enough to push a tackle into a quarterback and he’s not skilled enough to beat one around the edge. It’s imperative for us to give YaYa more reps he will be that monster we need playing along side C. Kancy

Yada Yada Yada
What can I say to get some clicks…
Go Bucs!
