Critique from Bucs locker room.
After the loss to the Lions, Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield said one way for the offense to improve is to start playing “p!ssed off.”
Mayfield’s take received vocal support yesterday from various people at One Buc Palace — from Bucs coach Todd Bowles down to All-Pro tackle Tristan Wirfs.
“Yeah! That’s totally fine,” Wirfs said of Mayfield’s suggestion. ” Playing with an edge. Playing with a chip on your shoulder. Not being the one to take the shove at the end of the play. Be the one giving the last shove or last push.
“But yeah, 100 percent.”
It sure seems like the Bucs miss the ornery edge that Pro Bowl center Ryan Jensen not just offered, but delivered. Do the Bucs have a guy that can pick up Jensen’s torch? Wirfs didn’t hesitate an instant with an answer.
“Luke,” Wirfs immediately replied about Bucs right tackle Luke Goedeke, not even taking a split-second to think of an answer. “He’s an asshole.”
Something must really click for Goedeke to pull a “Carrie” the moment he steps between the lines. He is one of the friendliest guys in the locker room. That personality does a total flip when he straps on a helmet.
It seems the entire line needs to start channeling Goedeke.
Joe is just guessing here, but Goedeke may be the biggest surprise player on offense. People were ready to run him out of town before the season started. That hollering has quickly vanished.

I tip my hat to the job Goedeke has done at RT and he has far exceeded my expectations. Next draft we need an early round center IMO.

Tackles are good. The interior…not so much.
The should hold a team meeting with the O line. Call em all around a garbage can, pull those plays from the playbokk that are runs up the gut.
And put a match you em, and all sing along to Green Day-Good Riddance.

You know I wonder if Licht was playing the long game when he drafted Goedeke. Smith was entering the last year of his contract. Maybe Licht had planned the whole time to move Wirfs over and he needed a (small school) RT in the draft. Perhaps Luke was put at LG last year only out of necessity. Could be.

Jack Burton Mercer … No way to know what Licht’s intentions were when he drafted Goedeke, but one thing is obvious: Luke was a rookie playing out of position last year on a bad OLine. Took him a year to get his NFL strength built up and for the Bucs to realize he wasn’t a LG, but he’s doing fine now.
I see 3 OLinemen who are long-term keepers: Wirfs, Goedeke & Mauch. Hainsey is an excellent backup, but unless he gets a lot stronger and meaner, he needs to be replaced. Feiler is a good stop-gap, but not the long-term answer.

Nice Carrie reference. That flick still scares me. Looks like the Bucs have themselves two high caliber 24 year old starting tackles. Goedeke shutting down Hutchinson like he did was my biggest take away from the Lions “debacle in the den.”

Perhaps that is why they refer to it a an A Gap. Might get confusing if a Back is asked to pound the A Hole.

MISSING THE POINT
When Mayfield said they need to “Get angry,” he wasn’t talking about the OL. He was talking about every player coming onto the field with greater purpose, a sense of urgency, and a conviction to score points. He was saying the entire offense needs to find that extra emotional component (passion) to put them over the top.
HIGHLIGHTING THE UNDERLYING PROBLEM
Bowles has no passion. He speaks about playing with precision. He’s anti-emotion. The team loses its passion because Todd preaches a Vulcan-like, approach to the game.

I think I recall listening to a recent Bucs podcast where they mentioned that Luke had some words regarding he’d played better talent than Hutchinson prior to Lions game, giving Hutchinson ammunition prior to the game, and yet Luke backed it up during the game. Would love to see this kid continue to trend like this.
It’s the give a F@ck factor that he has that I don’t feel we always got from Smith. Just felt like Smith’s measurables were built to play OT at a pro-level so that’s what he did to make a living, does he love football, or simply he likes the life football has provided… that’s huge mental swing imo. It’s the work-to-live vs lived-to-work mentality… which Goedeke certainly seems to be the latter, not to mention that GIGANTIC chip on his shoulder given the “experts” all saying that this kid is not a OT at the NFL level. Keep that fire burning Luke!

I think this kid is going to be great. I believe we already have the best tackles in football. I love the way Luke pancakes his opponents, we could start calling him pancake Goedeke or flap jack Goedeke

So we have the best Offensive Tackles in the league, we have one of the best receiver combination in the league, but we can’t score Touchdowns nor can we run da ball.
Sounds like we need some coaching help.
How does Cleveland, Chicago, Arizona run the ball with far less talent. I think its the Offensive line coach, in my opinion.

I never understood why you take a RIGHT Tackle and you move him to LEFT Guard… hearing all these guys, including Wirfs, explaining how difficult it is to change all your moves and processes because of the change of side, why would you do that to an inexperienced rookie?!?
Wouldn’t be better to move him last year to RIGHT Guard, easing up his adaptation that is already so difficult because he is moving to a new position and from a small school to the NFL?!?
Sometimes coach logic beats me, honestly….

I was mad they put him at LG last year.
But I’m so happy he’s at RT. He’s playing solid.
His kick out gets better every day with reps and games.
He’s noticeable thicker than Mauch.
I apologize for anything I said before.
He’s fine at RT.
It’s center where we have a huge problem.
He is a good man. And smart.
But he is not very strong or athletic.
We need a center next year.
Round 1 or 2. Preferably trade out of the first and pick up an extra 2nd and 3rd.
Imagine three 2nd round picks. Instead of a 1st and a 2nd.
I swear it’s smarter.
In the 2nd round, you can find one of the best centers, safeties and running backs in college football.
And safeties rarely go in round 1.
So we can get one of the best safeties coming out of college in the 2nd.

Mebbe Goedeke got fed up with all the BS about him on social media last year. He went to his coaches, and told Canales where he wanted to play. Canales listened. The Defense and Special Teams are getting into playoff shape. The Offense is the one with the most changes and will take longer. it always does in this game.

Ryan and Luke need to hold some after practice classes on assole techniques. Maybe invite some of the tight ends and running backs to attend?

Yea it really looks like we need to throw rookie seasons out of the window. We thought this guy was a waste of a pick after a few games.
