Inside The Calijah Kancey Sack

October 17th, 2023

Rookie defensive tackle Calijah Kancey has caught the eye of a former Buccaneer.

A couple of takes here on the sack by defensive tackle Calijah Kancey in his first full NFL game on Sunday.

Obviously, it was a great play by a rookie shocking the NFL data world. However, Joe will be the bad guy and note that it came against a backup making his first start of the season at left guard.

Third-year player Kayode Awosika was substituting for regular Lions left guard Jonah Jackson. It was also late in the fourth quarter and Awosike might have been worn down in his first major action of the season.

On the upside, former Bucs guard Ali Marpet was gushing about the play on the Buccaneers Radio Network.

Marpet noted that Awosika was in perfect position to pick up Kancey as the Bucs had an “overload look” on the opposite side of the center.

“The left guard knows that someone’s going to come back to him and Kalijah still, like full extension rolls his hips, is able to play with so much power and just walks this guard back. It was awesome,” Marpet said.

Marpet, a big fan of Kancey’s mix of speed, strength and good leverage, said it’s always stunning when an offensive lineman knows what’s coming but still gets beat.

Joe can’t wait to see more of Kancey, and Joe will give some love to defensive tackle Logan Hall eating up the double team to set up Kancey. (Video below.)

Kancey can really play and Hall has developed nicely into his role

  2. BucsFanSince76 Says:

Bucs have allowed the 2nd fewest points in the NFL at 88. Defense is not our problem. Kancey looks like who the Bucs thought he was when they took him with the 1st rounder at 19. falcons game is a MUST WIN and I definitely see Bucs covering the 2.5.

  3. Jack Clark Says:

Our DTs have to do all the work stopping the run and the pass because our edge rushers are softer than a snowflake

  4. DS Says:

Agreed with @Jack Clark we have zero edge rush

  5. A Bucs Fan Says:

He looked the part Sunday! Best part is he admitted he’s rusty. Can’t wait to see what he’s like at full speed. Didn’t he also have a TFL on a run beating Penai Sewell one on one? That was cool too.

  6. Zoocomics Says:

It’s almost a waste how good this defense is. Damn if we just had a little more juice on offense, no one would want to face us down the stretch, similar to last years Lions team.

  7. Eric Says:

So we going to dock him for playing against the guy in front of him smh, part of his job is to rush the qb no matter what or who is in front of him great job Kancey! You think John Randle Warren Sapp or Aaron Donald got all their sacks against non back ups? Bet the farm, you would be wrong!

    ^^^^^^^
Ah, Jack “Charmin” Clark calling an NFL player soft…Okay. 🙄

I could have missed it but is this the very firs “Inside the Sack” article on JBF….

    Kancey deserves it…..

And….lost in the loss is another fantastic day of punting from Carmarda.

  10. DS Says:

The defense is doing well without edge rushers it’s kind of a miracle when you think about it

  11. Buccos Says:

Shaq Barrett was sick but played anyways. We will see how the edge rushers play against Atlanta. I’m thinking that we put it all together. I’m just glad we stayed healthy. It’s time for us to take care of business in our division

  12. Mike Johnson Says:

Need more from Tryon. We did not get there against Goff. And if you give
that rook from ATL enough time, he will burn us. Defense needs to step it up bigtime. I mean, after all, that is suppose to be Bowles strong suite right?

    COOL ARTICLE
We all respect Ali Marpet. It says a lot when a Pro Bowl OL is impressed with a DL.

    Here’s the other thing …
Vea has up’ed his game this year. (Joe, time to give the big man a shout out.) He’s on a mission to get +10 sacks. Teams have to double Vea. Kancey will feast as long as Vea is playing like that.

  14. DJB Says:

That is one big sumagun “Fancey” is taking on there.

  15. Drunkinybor Says:

How about Kancey was tired also

  16. gotbbucs Says:

Yes, more of that. Play coverage and let the defensive line have some space to work some games and moves. If anything, blitz off the edge to compress the pocket in towards Kancey and Vea. When you have a 3-tech like Kancey you don’t jumble up the middle.

  17. G-Buc Says:

    Been impressed with Hall.

JTS actually had a decent game.

Cancey…. Well he looked nice. Love the stat line.
    Give him reps.

  18. Weebs10 Says:

    The Kancey Man Kan!!!

  19. PewterStiffArm Says:

It was also Kancey’s first full game as a pro. Backup or third stringer, Kancey held his own. And with Logan Hall coming on strong along side him more quarterbacks are going to be eating Bermuda grass on Sunday’s.

  20. SOEbuc Says:

YaYa only going to get better.

  21. Proudbucsfan Says:

I think Watts should get in more. I believe he is the OLB that is going to blow up for us. Have a feeling about that kid.

  22. BoricuaBucfan Says:

Pretty sure he also hit the QB 3 times. Dude is gonna be a stud, I’m excited for this D

  23. garro Says:

    Congrats to Kancey!

Funny thing Joe but that one was one of those I really love because if Kancey didn’t get it, there was JTS, Hall, or Shaq that definitely would have. They doubled Hall? Hmm…

    Go Bucs!

  24. garro Says:

I maybe should not even say this but he kinda reminded me of Warren at one point Sunday.

    Go Bucs!

  25. adam from ny Says:

kancey is who we thought he was !!!

  26. BucU Says:

If we could just dump Ryan Neal and our 2 highly paid corners we might have a special D.

  27. TOM EDRINGTON Says:

ONE SACK rates all this attention???

  28. fred Says:

Joe stop hating that man balled out Sunday
