History Of Post-Bye Blues For Todd Bowles
October 15th, 2023Head coach Todd Bowles has been a head coach or a defensive coordinator for 11 NFL seasons, and Joe looked up Bowles’ record after a bye week in those seasons.
Last year, the Bucs had a meltdown to a bad Cleveland team following their November bye week and lost in overtime. Today it was a beatdown by the Lions at home after Week 5 bye. Multiple times after today’s game Bowles said his team was “sluggish” and looked liked it was coming off a bye.
So that’s two losses after a bye as Bucs head coach for Bowles. He was 1-3 after a bye as Jets head coach.
As a Bucs defensive coordinator under former head coach Bucco Bruce Arians, Tampa Bay with Bowles was 1-2 after a bye week. When Bowles held the same job under Arians in Arizona for two years, those teams were 1-1 following a bye, including the worst loss of the season for the 13-3 Cardinals of 2014.
Add it all up and Bowles teams are 3-8 after a bye week.
Most teams play better after a bye week.
Retired Bucs tight end Cameron Brate noted last week (when he picked the Lions as his best bet of this weekend) that he believes a bye week is more about “rust” versus “rest.” Joe guesses Brate was speaking from experience.

Problem is Mayfield is not accurate deep.

I’ll give you some history. Never let the Bucs put on that stinking orange uniform again and put it the dust bin of history. We never played good in it and never will. They look like a bunch of goofs in it and probably feel that way too.

I picked up direct tv red zone today. Every team seemed to be busting an
occasional 10-12 yard run..except Bucs. Can’t expect Bucs / mayfield to excel against top teams when defenses are pinning their ears and pressuring the pocket. Would love to get King Henry…..defense of the field too long today . Thank goodness the entire division lost today.

Terrible on 3rd and Long. Terrible after the bye. Maybe try something different?

I second what Sumosan says. Watching this game gave me the same feeling I had for so many years as a Bucs fan. Defense plays good and offense stinks it up. Of course in the second half the defense today wouldn’t been able to stop the school for the blind. Do you know what the common denominator is between the teams of old and this team today. Those damn creamsicle jerseys. Those things need to be burned.

It was crazy people kept saying they were totally confident or confident in Bowles so early in the season. If the offense stinks he chose the coordinator and elected to get someone with zero experience so he doesn’t get a pass, the talent licht have him since he came to town makes him look better than he is.
When you look good against bad teams and bad against good teams, that’s screams middle of the pack or no man’s land

It doesn’t have anything to do with the uniforms and everything to do with Todd Bowles practice schedule and preparation. He is to soft on theses guys and they don’t practice hard enough. I was raised to know that the hardest workers reap the best rewards.

I agree with Sumo and Lakeland. Those unis are cursed. At least we made a couple of field goals. I figured, while listening to the game, that we would never get points kicking. 🙂

Someone get up off their lazy rears and look up Bucs history. Look at ALL the losses after the Bye week. They way outnumber a lonely win. It’s a Bucs curse with or without Bowles.

Bye week extra week to prepare, big game on national TV, special game (creamsickle, ring of honor, etc) = recipe for disaster. Why does this team lay a stinker in games where they should be up and playing their best football?
