Our first-place Buccaneers aren’t ready for primetime.
The offense is stuck in 2022 and the defense isn’t good enough to overcome it against a powerful team. That’s the Lions, the club that smacked around Tampa Bay today — with maybe 20,000 blue-clad Lions fans invading The Licht House.
Detroit had more big catches, precision throws and too much power in their defensive front for the Bucs. By contrast, the Bucs had no edge rush, slippery hands in the receiving game, their trademark anemic run game and a too-often porous secondary.
After three quarters, Lions QB Jared Goff was 21-of-32 with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Nobody knew it then, but the game was over.
The Tampa Bay offense had no response, flatline.
Before this game, the Bucs had relied on turnovers. Those didn’t come today and the Bucs offense had no answers.
A big Mike Evans drop on third down hurt, as did Baker Mayfield overthrowing Trey Palmer on a deep shot and having a wide open deep shot to Evans batted down at the line of scrimmage. There were other shoddy connections between Palmer and Mayfield and some odd playcalls for Deven Thompkins in key moments. The young receivers had a forgettable day.
It’s said that football is a game of inches and big plays. Well, the Bucs just weren’t up for the big moments.
Maybe it was rust off the bye week. Whatever it was, it was inexcusable.
Joe’s hat is tipped to Lavonte David for playing like he was 10 years younger, and rookie defensive tackle Calijah Kancey looked like a real impact player in his return to the lineup after 11 snaps on opening day. Kancey got his first career sack in the fourth quarter.
The good news? NFC South rival New Orleans lost to the Texans and Atlanta lost at home to the Commanders. Both are 3-3 as the Bucs sit at 3-2, good for first place in the division.
The Bucs host the Falcons next Sunday.

No one gets a pass. The Lions had the ball about twice the time of procession, The D couldn’t get off the field, and the O couldn’t do much of anything, A losing effort all together. And yeah, our team has three wins against teams cumulatively with a record of 6-12. Pretenders.

The Bucs oline has improved, but still sucks. Cant run the ball and protection is a mess. The defense gas improved, but still gets gashed for big plays at big moments. You cant see in without a oline, and you cant win with a defense that continuously gives up big plays! Period.

Because, down by 14, with 11 mins left, we need to run the ball twice for 3 yards, then throw quick out to the RB for no yards. The defense would EXPECT you to throw to your expensive WRs in that scenario, and Bowles knows that, so he ordered Canales to use reverse psychology. Just like everyone would expect you to go for it on 4th and 2, down by 14, with 10 mins left, knowing your defense is spent. Bowles was outsmarting the Lions by punting there, but the players failed him.

We were beat by the lions WITHOUT David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs.. let that sink in. We faced them at 80% and still got absolutely man handled. At home. The Seahawks put up 37 against this Lions team and we can’t even score a touchdown. #99 the big fella – well I’ve never been on the Mayfield bandwagon, but you’re right, it is laughable. But it is fair to say he played awful today. Hopefully next week, vs a bad team, we get the good Baker who plays well vs bad teams.
If not, the team is going to very quickly be 3-4 considering they have no chance of beating Buffalo in Buffalo on a short week. Then they play a hot Houston team…

1 – Lions offense controlled the game.
o TOP … 36:29 to 21:31.
o 3rd downs … Lions 9-for-16 to Bucs 2-for-12.
o Lions 69 plays (22 rushes for 40 yds – 44 passes; 30 complete for 353 yds – 3 sacks).
o Bucs 54 plays (15 rushes for 46 yds – 38 passes; 20 complete for 211 yds – 1 sack).
2 – Both defenses played well. Bucs defense was going up against a much better offense, yet they still only allowed 17 pts (plus holding the Lions to a FG after the INT deep in Bucs’ territory).

The offense struggles primarily because they cannot run the football. They cannot run the football primarily because the oline gets embarrassed on nearly every rush down. It all starts up front and there is a persistent narrative around here to try and blame the, admittedly dismal, backs instead of addressing what is plain to see that the oline cannot hold up in the trenches.
Cue the excuses for the oline and the GM responsible for fielding that starting lineup incompetence.

They didnt answer the call today, and the offense was flat. Another game where they were physically outplayed by a good team. Its good that this Oline doesnt give up a lot of sacks, but its equally just as bad and getting push on the line. I may have been for nothing anyways considering who is running the football on this team. Not going to fault the defense for holding Detroit to 20. Lets get back to work and make the Falcons a get right game next week. Rest of the division is just as bad.

When some Bucs fans are saying to pump the breaks and not over react and overestimate the team after every win we are bad fans.
A win is a win yes but you must see, analyze the performance and not mask everything because of a win.
Its true that the Offense has not be good. The only really good game bu the Offense was the Saints game.
We have played against 2 good teams in our home and we have scored 11 and 6 points. In these 2 games the Offense is unwatchable. In both these 2 games against quality opponents we were not competitive if we want to be honest. Yes the score was 10-6 late in the 3rd but we cant say that we looked like we can win.
The Defense although has not most of the blame for today is not a top level Defense as some of us fans say, and we are not bad fans but we just try to be honest. The Defense gives up to many 3rd and longs. Defense is not responsible for the loss today but they can be better.
We are not competitive vs the good teams and it is the truth.

No shame loosing to a better team butttttt, Baker had a lousy day. Lions pressured him very well and Baker over threw or under threw all game long. Once again the Bucs run game was non existet. Bucs defense kept the game close for a long time. The Bucs offense sucked. The Bucs defense kept the game close but the offense was pretty dam bad. Evans has been dropping too many balls this season. He was worried about getting hit that’s why he dropped it. Lions coached their players up for this game to focus on batting balls down at the line of scrimmage from Mayfield. That was good film review and study on Mayfield. It worked. It’s just unacceptable for Mayfield to overthrow open receivers.Kudos to the OL for protecting Mayfield. JTS batted a ball down today, that was his first batted pass since being drafted. Our coaches should be coaching him to use more than just his speed. He’s still a bust. CJ n JDean are not top tier cb. They got schooled today. Wow, I wished we still had JWhitehead n not Ryan Neal. Our coaches got out coached today. Was Leftwich in the house calling plays today? Bowles, as usual, will not play to win. He was pleased with us just scoring 6 points, he’s still coaching 70’s football. As usual when behind, he’ll wait until last 4 minutes then try making a comeback.

Holding Lions to 20 points is no great feet as Joe wrote in a previous post, Goff is not great on the road. DR, the TOP is extended when you give up 9 first downs 56%.

Next year forget having a quarterback, receivers, offense coaches and most of the offense players. Draft a miracle kicker, who can kick 3 points from the 25 yard line on every first down. Add more defensive players and special teamers, to stop the other team scoring. This should be Bowles plan for 2024. Good for the salary cap!

To do more than contend for the division the O will have to produce. It didn’t today but did against a very good Saints D 2 weeks ago.

The run game can’t get established because the defenses we face don’t fear the pass. They don’t fear the passing game because our passing game is non existent. Then our defense gets demoralized. It steadily goes down hill from there. See lions game for reference.

The biggest losers surrounding this team are their fans. Week after week the visiting team’s fans take over Ray Jay. Mayfield was tough and underwhelming today. Mike Evans is a good not great receiver. He is not a HOFer. He drops too many. Neal struggled. I thought Luke and Tristan had very good games. But our offence didn’t give our defence a chance. The Lions had 30 more plays on offence. That can’t happen. Having said that there has been improvement. We as fans need to be patient with process. That Evans penalty was the turning point of the game. He can’t make mistakes like that. The stats may not show it but the game was close. The opportunities were there, we just didn’t execute. We will get better. Have faith.

No edge rush. Gee what a shock. Earth calling Mr. Bowles…might wanna give Gill and Watts a chance off the edge and stop having your corners give the WRS a first down cushion on every play, run or pass. 3rd and 1, Goff in shotgun takes snap, looks left, hits WR on a 5 yard out…with big money Dean running in 8 yards away to make the stop. 13 yards off the LOS on 3rd and 1. You just can’t make it up. Forget beating the legit teams, Bowles and Canales will keep the worst teams in the game. Mark it, they will be Carolina’s first win of the season.

There was close to 11 minutes left. They were on their own 33 yard line and two yards needed to get a first down. This team had not been moving the ball all day. Down by two scores and failing to get that first down puts the Lions in FG territory. Which would have made it a three score deficit.
The obvious call was not to punt. Which they did. It was an excellent punt that forced Detroit to start at their own 15 yard line.
Bottom line. It was the right call.

Soft zone coverage killed us today. We have two 6 foot plus CBs who never jam at the line. Goff picked up on it early and abused us. They ran 5 yard button hook routes and would gain 7 or 8 yards a pop. Shame on Bowles for not making adjustments.

Joe the defense kept it close more than half the game but what do you expect when they are out there the whole game and the offense not only couldn’t sustain drives but put points the board. The defense isn’t that if the 2002 hall of fame defense but they are good. It’s a team sport if the defense had an offense to compliment them it’s a diff outcome.

Two players who haven’t got it done this year – Deven Thompkins and Ryan Neal. Cade Otton is a #2 TE — not a #1. Need a C and G also. Hainsey is a good back up at G or C.
FA and draft are starting to take shape as the season goes (assuming Bucs don’t draft a QB)
G in FA (Pay the $ and get a very good established player)
C in the draft (Van Pran from UGA in 1st or 2nd rd)
S in the draft (Catalon from Ark, Nubin from Minn in the 4th)
TE in FA or the draft (Bell from TX, Bell from FSU, Castles from TN in the 3rd)
RB in FA or the draft (Braelon Allen from Wisc, Audric Estime from ND in late rd/big back only)
WR/Return Specialist in the draft (Johnny Wilson Outside WR from FSU in 1st, Anaias Smith Slot WR from TXA&M in 2nd, Chris Tyree RB/WR from ND in late rd)
Bucs do NOT have a 5th rd pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

This D is too good to give up 350 plus yards passing.
I didn’t notice any adjustments being made to even try to win today.
Still love the Bucs but I’m really disappointed today.

Bucs are only a good team — win against lesser teams, may win one they shouldn’t..
Lions and Miami are very good.
Eagles, 49ers, Chiefs are the elite.
Bucs have fixed most of the D (still need a S). The problem is still the O. Need a C, G, RB, WR and TE. Assuming we don’t go QB in the draft in 2024.

we are a good team…and should slide to 4-2 next week…
detroit is a great team…top 5 for sure, maybe top 3…
if things go well, we might pull off my max number of wins this season and finish 10-7…

a little surprised we put up zero offense today tho…
we just couldn’t connect on any plays that would have made a game of it…
that happens sometimes…in some games…
but there was no room for it against a terrific detroit team…
the d fought and fought and slowly as the game progressed they just wore down…we’ve got a pretty darn good defense…and they had a lot of fight in them…

Brady wasn’t his best last year, but I do believe he would’ve won this game. The pass protection was awesome today! That was missing last year. Brady definitely wouldn’t have batted passes at the line. He also can see over the line

Watching the game I didn’t feel the Bucs were over matched like he Eagles game. Some miss opps was really the difference. The defense played VERY well considering they didn’t get any offense to help.
So the Bucs are a step below the top teams in the NFC in week 6. That’s OK, I think they’re capable of improving & competing against these teams that have been together a lil longer.
