Impressive pass protection.
Sometime after the first Bucs offensive possession today, if not before, Joe will just about guaran-f’ing-tee it someone will b!tch about the offensive line. It’s what people do.
It’s lazy. It’s dumb. And it’s so, so, so tired.
So the following will certainly trigger these same folks.
Per BSPN, the four sacks the Bucs have allowed this season (through four games) is the lowest through four games in the post-Chucky era.
That’s right, since 2008, Chucky’s last season as the Bucs head coach. That was also when fan favorite Jeremy Trueblood started at right tackle.
So since the Bucs are blocking so well on pass plays — and Baker Mayfield is scrambling so well — is this a game where the Bucs can negate Lions pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson?

The Lions pass defense is bad. We should pass to open up the run.

But Joe. We are averaging 3.0 YPC.
We lost Marpet, Cappa and Jensen. The baddest interior line ever!
We are getting better. But Hainsey gets zero push.
Center next year. Round 1.
Hainsey will provide us with a backup with experience.
But we need a center in round 1 or 2 next year!

I think its possible as long as there is balance, and Baker doesnt have to throw it 40 times.

Sacked 4 times because we run twice as much.
Hard to sack Baker when White runs it.
You back up to throw 50 times and sacks go up.
Really a numbers game more than anything.

Baker is mobile, we keep them honest with consistently running, and we have two elite wide receivers.

Excuse the what about this I’m about to what about this with my concern that 4 is probably 10 without Houdini Baker. He’s been in that medieval looking torture device where swords are thrust through at every imaginable angle but when Goff’s girlfriend spins the metal model around a few times and opens the cage, Baker’s jersey in unblemished.

Sacks don’t always tell the full story.
If you’re not allowing many sacks but also not putting up above average passing yards and/or above average rushing yards, then it’s not that valuable of a stat.

Do you actually watch the O line play Joe? Have you seen Baker escaping the grasp of linemen and LBs who want him in the ICU? Not saying they have been bad, but there is room for improvement.
If you just look at PFF stats you will be misled. Brady showed me that those stats were worthless last year. O line is better this year but a far cry from the kind of O line we had for the Super Bowl. Baker has made our dudes look alot better in the stats columns…by escaping and extending plays.

We do a lot of short/intermediate passes, and last I saw, Baker was getting the ball out in 2.7 seconds. Blitz that all you want and not many sacks will happen

Aidan Hutchinson is a 270lb monster with a 6’7″ frame and a huge wingspan. I doubt he gets past Wirfs but Luke Goedeke will be tested to see if the short arms really makes a difference against tall opponents.

So far, as Baker goes, so goes the Bucs offense. Run game is weak. Pass blocking just fair. Bucs have won three games on solid defense and Baker’s legs. As the D and Baker goes, so goes the Bucs. That is good enough to beat the bottom 2/3 of opposing teams but not likely to beat the top tier 1/3. Bucs are very likely to win their division but unlikely to win in the playoffs, much like last season. If the Bucs can somehow develop a good run game, they could be true contenders.

No not if their secondary is a weakness. I like the balance and he’s not throwing too much. Thanks to the defense keeping the scores low

As long as we don’t give up many sacks I don’t see any reason to write off our pass protection.Baker’s escapability is a contributing factor, but the overall pass blocking is still pretty good.

This is tired reporting. The offensive line has been decent in pass pro due to excellent tackle play. The interior of the line is inconsistent at best, gets zero push on running plays, and often gets our running backs hit in the back field. Goedeke has been a fantastic surprise, but Hainsey has been very disappointing, Mauch looks like a rookie, and I understand why Feiler was a cheap free agent. Hopefully in the bye week we figured out a way to mitigate the issues with the interior of the line. Perhaps more toss plays to the left??

The RBs, Otton, and Kieft can catch the ball. Someone wrote a comment on here about Kieft perhaps taking a fullback role. Try it. Canales needs to spread the ball out, and that will take some pressure off BM.

What’s lazy is when one writer always has an agenda like the people who are fanbois of a particular player and they down people who don’t agree with their agenda. Everybody out there knows it’s because of Baker’s abilities to escape and not the line which is the worst run blocking line in all of football. Refusing to see rushers in the backfield within 2 seconds hitting the rbs or chasing the qb out of the pocket is a bad look for a sports writer. From the looks of it this will never change
