Lavonte David Looking Forward To Calijah Kancey Taking The Field
October 13th, 2023Interesting words from veteran linebacker Lavonte David on whether rookie defensive tackle Calijah Kancey can get on the field and play Sunday, Creamsicle Day against the Lions.
Joe has heard plenty over the years about Vita Vea eating up so many blocks that he keeps offensive linemen occupied and out of the second level, specifically away from backers like Devin White and David.
Yesterday, David was saying the same thing about Kancey.
“It’s wonderful, man, when you got a guy like that who can move and occupy the O-linemen and gives you a chance to react quicker and use your instincts more – especially when you’re playing behind him and you know what he’s going to do and make a quick move,” David said. “So it frees up stuff for you because he’s disruptive, and it gives guys like me and Devin [White] a kind of flow over the top and kind of run through gaps and stuff like that. We’ve seen glimpses of it.
“Obviously, the first time against Minnesota he had a couple QB hits and stuff like that for 11 snaps. So it’s definitely dope to have him back. I know he’s excited to get back. You know, that’s hometown (Kancey is from David’s homewon) so I’m glad to have him back myself.”
Joe doesn’t hear this often from linebackers about tackles known for their speed, which Kancey is. Joe can only guess Kancey is so damn quick that he occupies two or more blocks just like Vea does with brute strength.
Kancey was a full participant in Wednesday and Thursday practices. So it looks as if he might be good to go on Sunday.

LFG, Go Bucs!
October 13th, 2023 at 9:10 am
I hope he’s correct…and I hope Kancey stays healthy. So far, 11 plays aside, he’s smoke & mirrors.
He is of no use in the tub.

Kancey’s injury timeline is really no different than Vita Vea’s calf his rookie season. The only reason it’s taken two weeks longer to heal up is because he pushed too soon to get on the field Week 1. He should have been put on IR and kept out until this game from the beginning but hindsight is 20/20.
Hopefully he balls out! I keep envisioning him splitting lineman and being in the backfield Sunday. But I probably have my hopes to high on that one.
October 13th, 2023 at 9:21 am
Exactly. Yet there are people commenting on this site he ought to be cut because he doesn’t have the balls to go back on the field and blow out his leg for the season because… hell, Joe doesn’t know why.
October 13th, 2023 at 9:38 am
If Vea can take two and Kancey can take two, that leaves or LB’s room to roam. I sure would love to clober the Lions 28-0
October 13th, 2023 at 9:39 am
I feel good to call it, I think if Kancey plays at least 40% of the plays Sunday, he gets a sack. He’s going to get the 1 on 1 opportunities as the rookie coming off of an injury early and Goff is no Lamar Jackson. Can’t wait to see how he impacts the defense for a whole game!
October 13th, 2023 at 9:40 am
Yes buc U was all over kancey for not playing hurt. That’s why I told him to go buc himself. I cant wait to see kancey and doubleV disrupt things.
October 13th, 2023 at 9:40 am
LVD has been voted Defensive Captain for how many seasons, joes? He’s a future HOFamer. He talks, we listen. He’s my favorite Buc. Looking forward to listening for Kancey and JTS. Bowles better call the right plays for the (D). Sounds like LVD, DW, and VV are ready. Lions better be careful.
October 13th, 2023 at 9:43 am
He’s the X factor for this defense. Expecting an immediate impact. Perfect timing. He’ll remind many of #99 in creamsicle Sunday.
October 13th, 2023 at 9:44 am
waiting anxiously…really wanna see more of him
October 13th, 2023 at 9:46 am
Yep, I know Joe’s read about the soft players we have here that needed to e cut during training camp. Those players that needed to be cut were Goedeke, McCollum, Dean, Davis, White, JTS because they were hurt or suck while Kancey, Mauch, and Palmer were busts. Our fan base is full of low IQ drama queens.
October 13th, 2023 at 9:49 am
Four games in it looks like Jason Licht absolutely killed the draft, college free agency and pro free agency.
October 13th, 2023 at 10:02 am
Brandon, every fan base is full of low IQ drama queens….. they are made up of the general population so…… you know.
October 13th, 2023 at 10:05 am
There has to be something extra special about Kancey. Just eleven snaps played and not only fans and pundits, but players too are gushing about the guy. Go Calijah!
October 13th, 2023 at 10:15 am
he must be something to get David excited, because David has seen it all. Very high praise from an iconic vet for a rookie DT.
October 13th, 2023 at 10:21 am
I hope this is the aspect that blows the top off this defense. Especially in run defense. That’s exactly what we need blow up the Lions running game, some one to penetrate the Oline and blow up running plays before they can get started.
October 13th, 2023 at 10:32 am
Kancey has that killer instinct. He jumps, he pushes, he slams, n has a drive for getting after the qb. He n LDavid are not only from the same hometown, they attended the same high school. Am I the only one to notice that Ya Ya is playing better than JTS. When will JTS be benched? I believe UDFA Markee Watts is a better player than JTS. Would u believe that at 6’5 n in the league for 3 years, JTS does not have a PD stat,0. That’s a sign of a lazy n lost wanna be nfl player. Let’s admit he was a bad draft pick. Cut ur losses n live to see another draft.

@Joe I don’t know either. People making comments like that do not make sense. It can only be explained as poorly managed frustration or a lack of understanding the situation. Probably both.
October 13th, 2023 at 10:36 am
In CD3’s rookie season, I assumed his job was to chase opposing players into the end zone, shows what I know
October 13th, 2023 at 10:46 am
With everyone healthy, it will be interesting to see who the healthy roster scratches are…….
October 13th, 2023 at 10:46 am
JTS gets into the backfield and disrupts it. He is also starting to get sacks. It sounds like he, VV and Kancey are healthy. They’re getting ready, and Bowles better call the right plays for this trio. If that happens, the D will be SCARY. We’ve got some nicked up BDs returning, too.

October 13th, 2023 at 11:12 am
Mike C… You’re probably right. That was the one thing I enjoyed about growing up in DC area as a Bucs fan, no low IQ fans I was associated with. There were plenty of Redskin, Cowboy, and Steeler fans to make their fellow fans look bad.
October 13th, 2023 at 11:13 am
Usually elite DT’a go in the top 10.
We got Vita Vea at #13 and Kancey at #19?
Brilliant drafting Licht.
And it proves the Bucs are blessed franchise because we draft men of character and integrity.
Licht is a good man. I’m not a Christian but I respect Licht as a man of God.
The Bucs franchise became a franchise with honor during the Dungy Years.
I am very happy to see the Bucs have a roster filled with men of honor.
Go Bucs!
I have loved the attempt to draft lineman.
Vita Vea
Logan Hall
Joe Tryon-Shoyinka
Mauch
Goedeke
Kancey
(Trask should have been a center or d-lineman. But wtv)
Overal, I commend Licht for at least attempting to draft in the trenches.
It’s a smart strategy!
(Only misses were Darden (too small and scared for the NFL)
Hainsey (not a miss but not a starter in the 3rd round)
Trask (we didn’t need a 4th string QB that year. We needed a backup guard/center for Marpet, Jensen and Cappa)

I’m with you! I don’t know what motivates him, perhaps as you suggest he actually practices his Christian faith, whatever I love high character players.
I’ll take Derrick Brooks over Warren Sapp any day of the week. At least unlike MEshawn Johnson Sapp was never a distraction on the field, or nothing I heard at least in the locker room. And again in fairness to Warren while he was with the Bucs he never got busted for groping an Uber driver drunk out of his mind at 3AM
I think the position that amazes me most is what the Bucs have done at WR.
Two non prima donnas at a position that usually has the typical AB’s, OBJ’s, AJ Browns and MEshawns.
October 13th, 2023 at 11:53 am
I agree about loving the MEN of character on the staff.
Bowles hiring Canales has changed the culture in additional ways as well.
I believe this team IS blessed and these guys see it and KNOW there is something special happening, from LVD and ME13 all the way down to Ryan Miller on the practice squad.
Can’t believe we still have David Moore on the practice squad. If for some reason Mike can’t go, I have the utmost confidence in Moore playing well. They only put him on the practice squad because they believed he would clear waivers. He is a good possession type receiver in a clutch.
If I were to think about what would put this team over the top next year, My draft would be: LG/C, RB, TE, SS, LB, D Line.
No specific order but we either gotta find a great TE/RB through the draft or trade for one which is expensive.
Just look at what a difference Laporta has made for Detroit. The TE coach said he is an equally good blocker as pass catcher.
We HAVE to get a quality TE.

Kancey might be the wild card that puts the Bucs over the top Sunday. Detroit has practically no tape on him, hard to gameplan against a team that just added another dimension to how they will attack you. Plus, when healthy he adds to the strength in the middle, and thats where the good teams live or die, not that picking around at the outside edges crap
October 13th, 2023 at 12:54 pm
Mike Evans is full go on Sunday! That’s a big help.
Seems the only question mark is Shaq with an illness. Hope he feels better soon.
October 13th, 2023 at 12:57 pm
With Kacey up. The defence will hold it’s own more than likely. So far the offense is 50/50. Two good games and two terrible games. Offense……LFG

I’m so glad you intellectual giants suffer us, the great unwashed. Thanks so much.
October 13th, 2023 at 2:35 pm
Fans are ridiculous for wanting to cut kancey and dean cause of injuries. Get yo heads right
October 13th, 2023 at 7:45 pm
Come on guys. Figure it out. The guys who come on here and make every post a negative comment or an attempt to get someone fired are not really Bucs fans. They are trolls. They are low-lifes trying to provoke us and drain our energy like psychic vampires. Most of these guys are probably really fans of one of the other teams in our division. Even in the rare case where their criticism is completely justified I will still pull for the Buc player , coach or exec and hope that he learns from his mistake(s) and improves. Humans are not static. What you get at the beginning can get a lot better by next week or near the end of the year. I’ve been watching football for over 40 years and I have seen it happen.

Ok..LVDs take rings true to me. If it allows him to react to plays and keeps he and White clean then expect a big day from our ILBs.
Go Bucs!
