Todd Bowles Gives A Shoutout To Logan Hall

When one man can’t get on the field, it’s an opportunity for another man to shine.
In football terms, this is called “next man up.” You hear it a lot. Especially when you see a team ravaged by injuries.
Thus far, Bucs first-round pick Calijah Kancey has, aside from 11 snaps, been unable to get on an NFL field. He injured his calf in the first week of training camp and has been pretty much sidelined since. When Kancey did play in the season-opener against the Vikings, he was a total blur and sure impressed Joe.
Yesterday, however, Kancey fully practiced. So that’s a good sign and just as general manager Jason Licht projected.
Bucs coach Todd Bowles was asked about Kancey’s availability for Sunday and, if he can play, what kind of an impact he could make.
Bowles’ answer dovetailed into a shoutout for second-year defensive lineman Logan Hall.
“Well, he gives us another option as a pass rusher inside where we didn’t have viable options before,” Bowles said of Kancey. “I think Logan [Hall] is getting a lot better and we really like what he is doing, but with [Kancey’s] quickness and his savvy as a pass rusher, hopefully that helps us.”
Great to know Hall is making headway. Joe noticed Hall in the win over the Bears. Thus far, Joe is of the belief that Hall is Will Gholston II. He may not be flashy but he plugs rushing lanes really well and can periodically get after the quarterback. And he’s progressing slowly.
Kancey can get after the quarterback. Joe’s seen it and hopes to see it a lot Sunday in those creamsicles.

I know we’re all up on Kancey because I know I sure am but… I finally picked up nfl+ because I couldn’t stand it anymore, and I watched the Vicks game where Kancey had a few reps. Maybe I’m over anticipating but I didn’t see that much from him. He did get through initially but he was stopped cold there after. I did see him double teamed on a play as well. So there’s something. I just wasn’t blown away. I’m gonna watch it again later today and maybe lower my expectations a bit. I’m just dreaming of him owning every round. High hopes and all…

If Kancey can play on Sunday I think we will dominate the Lions. Well, I think we will dominate them without Kancey but with him I think we will beat them more soundly, like keeping them out of the end zone.

Logan Hall can be an above average 5-tech DE. That’s his glove fit in this defense. He has been close to multiple sacks this season. He also has shown great hustle. He’s another pick that has made great strides over his rookie year. If he is ever able to get his pad level down he could be even better.

A lurker on here, PbnJ, penned a well-written, excellent rebuttal to all the ridicule directed towards the original team colors, and the smiling, winking (no, he was NO gay boy!) pirate helmet logo. I’m getting tired of it myself. I have quite a stash of Bucs merch in that design. I consider it Floridian. I also have a lot of pewter and red stuff, too. Back to Logan Hall. He’s been very busy and quite effective in his play on the field. I hope this Kancey kid can start so I can get a feel as to why Licht and Bowles made him the first pick. Go Tampa Bay!!

Hall has 6 tackles and 1/2 a sack. If this is what you think is good for a 33rd pick in the draft after 5 games into his second year , you are certainly never going to be my GM. His combine grade from the NFL was 6.29 which says he will EVENTUALLY be an AVERAGE starter. 33rd pick??????? Kancey gets healthy and Logans’ snap count decreases markedly which is a good thing. Licht saw something that nobody else did in this kid.

Some guys don’t know ball if you think Hall is supposed to be a 10 sack guy you are sick. His game is about stopping the run and TFLs and freeing up the LB’s

Sometimes it isn’t until the 3rd year that defensive linemen figure it out. JTS has already shown flashes of making a leap this year, although the hurt is still out. For Logan Hall he is definitely still “just a guy”, but it was always going to be harder for him as a “tweener”. Hopefully he makes progress throughout the year and then can be an impact guy next year.

@Bucsfansince76 – the draft is a crap shoot. A meta analysis of the past 15 years on second round picks showed that there was only a 15% chance of success the player would start always or consistently. The mark has seen a modest jump from 15-25 in the last five years but that could be due to recency bias and not enough time to see if players will fully develop or regress. All in all it makes Logan’s development look to be right on track and in line with his grade you mentioned. Especially given 75%-85% of second round picks in the last 15 years rarely make it off the bench to become regular starters.
Interestingly enough the most successful 2nd round pick by position is TE with a 45% hit rate…. Hopefully the Bucs draft one of those in the 2024 draft.

There’s actually a good video on YouTube breaking down the impact he had on his 11 or so snaps. He’s lightning quick but because of his short arms if he gets stood up and it’s over for him. He’s got a decent bull rush though. I was expecting Aaron Donald and that breakdown video gave me a realistic expectation. Loads of potential.

Defensive line techniques are important in the overall structure and scheme of the defense. The defensive line includes the defensive tackle and defensive end positions.
In order to stop the run, it’s important the defense has gap responsibility or man control.
Two common ways teams control the line of scrimmage:
Gap Control
Man control
Gap control is the most common, as players are put into different alignments and must maintain their “Gaps.”
Gap Control
Gaps are the areas between two players that create “holes” for running backs to run through. The bigger the gap, the easier it is for a running back to run full speed through it.
The defense refers to these as gaps; the offense refers to these spaces as “holes.”
The smaller the gap – it forces running backs to slow down or bounce it to the outside. This is what the defense ultimately strives to do – slow the offense and make them work laterally.
Typically, the offense will displace the defensive lineman from their position to try to create these holes. This is more common in power schemes.
In zone schemes, offensive players will try to get the defensive player running and use their speed and leverage to create holes rather than overpower the defender.
This is more common in today’s spread game as teams use the different outside and inside zone schemes to naturally displace defenders.The gaps are broken down into A-Gap, B-Gap, C-Gap, and D-Gap. The gaps are as follows:
A-Gap – The area between the Center and Guard (on both sides of the line). Protecting the A gaps is most important, as the A gaps are the shortest path to the end zone
B-Gap – The area between the Guard and Tackle (on both sides of the line).
C- Gap – The area between the Tackle and Tight End ( on both sides of the line).
D-Gap – The area outside of the Tight End
Man Control
Now that we know what gaps are let’s look at man control.
Man control is when teams have defensive linemen play through certain linemen to control more than one gap. This is also known as “Two-Gapping.”
Two-gapping requires a defensive lineman to control the opposing offensive lineman, rip off the block and make the tackle. This defensive technique is common in 3-4 Defenses and 4-3 defenses that play an even front.
The defensive techniques & alignments that are often played when playing man control are 0, 2, 4, and 6 techniques.
When the defensive line ( also known as d line), plays two gaps, they are often responsible for stopping the offense’s running game.
