Baker Mayfield Named A Bucs Captain

October 11th, 2023

The votes are in.

NFL team captains traditionally are chosen on Labor Day, but head coach Todd Bowles stepped away from that this season. He didn’t really give a firm reason.

Joe could speculate all day, but it would be pointless. Captains were named today after the locker room voted.

Per the Bucs, there are eight captains, an unusually high number. Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Baker Mayfield and Tristan Wirfs are from the offense; and it’s Lavonte David, Vita Vea, Devin White and Antoine Winfield Jr from the defense. Nobody got the nod from special teams.

“It’s truly an honor because you’re voted by your peers,” Mayfield said.

Joe typed up those names and thought for a moment; how many NFL teams have eight players of that caliber?

I was hoping they would go the whole season without naming captains. I was digging the captainless vibe! Solid picks though by the team.

That has to be the absolute best 8-players that any team in the NFL could muster up.

With Mayfield the only exception (at this point in time), all of those players are HOF-caliber and should all make the HOF someday.

There’s no way that any other team could trot out 7 legitimate HOF’ers.

  3. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

    All great choices. Go bucs

  4. Marine Buc Says:

Good – Baker has EARNED it…

    Go Bucs!

  5. adam from ny Says:

i mean yeah, heck, it had to be done during the bye week…

    otherwise it’s a ship without a rudder…

    good choices…especially with baker…now he’s really part of this…

with all due respect to qb #2, he better start checking his azz for splinters…baker has seized the moment to this point, and captainship solidifies the deal – unless an injury occurs, he prolly rocks till the end of the season

  6. I might be crazy but Says:

Don’t kin yourself. Mayfield was going to be the starter from the day Bucs got him.

  7. adam from ny Says:

i think captainship across the team was on hold because of baker…

if they named him a captain early, then say he hypothetically flops out and in comes trask for the season – at say the bye week – like right around now…

then it would be kind of awkward to have a first pick in the draft, captain, riding the bench and picking splinters out his azz after the games rather than taking interviews

THERE’S ACTUALLY A SUPER COOL STORY HERE
The super cool story here is our favorite Buc: Wirfs. Wirfs said out loud and to the media one of his biggest goals was to be named team captain before the start of the season. It was important to him because he wanted to ensure a winning culture (post-TB12) became a mainstay at OneBuc. He saw what happened to the OL when former captain Jensen went down and he didn’t want that to happen to the team again. Wirfs dedicated his offseason to becoming a great LT (leading by example) and also coaching up Goedeke (leading by teaching). Love this guy. He is a captain to be proud of. Congrats!

  9. KC Buc Says:

I think it’s interesting the defensive names not picked – Shaq & Davis. Shaq is the veteran in the D Line room, but team keeps voting for VV over him. Odd to me considering Shaq’s contract and production/street-cred. Similar situation with Davis who seems to do most of the public barking but Winfield gets the nod. I’m sure a lot of it is just a popularity contest too though, Shaq seems reserved and I could see Davis being love/hate in the locker room.

Breaking out the creams and the Cs on Sunday, let’s get that W!

PS – Erik, I love those 8 guys but let’s pump the brakes on 7 HOFers. I could be convinced of 2, with 2 more on track, but 4 of them (CG, DW, BM, & VV) definitely have work to do to earn that distinction.

  10. Bojim Says:

    He’s earned it.

14 Rookies made the Roster for the Rams alone in 2023. somewhere down the line some guys that sucked got cut and some Hall of Famers retired for the second time.

Hall Inducts between 4 and 8 people each year. This year Linebackers Chuck Howley (retired 1973) and Zack Thomas (retired 2010). In some cases worthy players wait for 50 years and get inducted at 87 years old. Some like Thomas make it early. Guys like Greg Lloyd are still waiting.

Is Lavonte Davis a Good Football Player? Yes. Will he make the Hall? Maybe. Eventually. Problem with getting in the Hall is by time they will get around to LD the people doing the selecting will look at the list and ask ‘Who the F is Lavnte David’?

  12. PSL Bob Says:

Finally! Maybe that will give the team an added spark. At least the 8 players voted captains.

  13. Duane in Sanford Says:

I like how they waited. These are the guys that make the plays and motivate the team. Love the nod to Winfield.

  14. orlbucfan Says:

ST’s day is coming, but like the pics. White especially cos of his personal tragedy off-field as well as good play. This indicates a tight locker room without divas.

  15. Watch More ALL22 Before Commenting Says:

Wait, I was told Mayfield would be benched by week 4!

  16. Steve Burke Says:

    ” There’s a tear in my beer”

  17. stpetebucfan Says:

    @SlyPirate

Thanks for sharing that story about Wirfs. It is indeed a cool story!

  18. David Says:

Capitan Baker. We all know what happens when he was named early as one of their Captains last year by Panthers. Kicked out of town like dirtbag.

  19. Shane Callahan Says:

David. That was a terrible organization. As was the Browns. Cut the guy some slack. How would you like to be a super stud QB betting on two horrific teams in a row. Do your homework.

  20. Buchead Says:

Bowles told us during a recent press conference why he delayed voting for captains. He said with all the new players he wanted to give them time to discern who earned it instead of making it a popularity contest.

  21. garro Says:

    White over Shaq?
    What a joke!
    Geez!

    Go Bucs!

  22. Toad Bowels Says:

Giving the Bucs captains their monikers

Captain Crunch – Vita Vea (powerful tackles)
Captain Kangaroo – Tristan Wirfs (hops from swimming pool)
Captain Hook – Antoine Winfield (hooks the ball)
Captain Morgan – Mike Evans (Veteran Buccaneer)
Captain Jack Sparrow – Chris Godwin (Younger Buccaneer)
Captain Kirk – Baker Mayfield (calculated risk taker)
Captain Picard – LaVonte David (rock steady)
Captain America – Devin White (superhero)

  23. Oneilbuc Says:

Baker Mayfield is ranked 28th in passing yards and 10 in touchdowns with 7 . Baker Mayfield is Rayn Tannihill 2.0 . The Titans got to the AFC championship with Ryan Tanahill his first year. After that year Tanahill been trash every year once teams started to stop Henry. And now the Titans fan base wants him gone. It will be the same thing if the bucs resign him with a 3 year or 2 year contract. Baker Mayfield is playing ok because he’s not asked to do much we are a defense lead team and I’m loving it.
