Devin White: The Subs Are Better
October 10th, 2023In his five seasons, Buccaneers savior linebacker Devin White has seen his share of rough play from guys off the bench. For Joe, the 2021 edition of Richard Sherman comes to mind.
White talked about success of the bench players yesterday and said it’s one reason the Bucs defense has hit another level this season.
“We had a lot of guys filling in and actually doing a great job and improving from last year when they had to fill in,” David said. “You know, one guy coming to mind, Zyon [McCollum], he played like a beast. And, I mean, he deserve to be on the field somewhere because he was making plays and he stepped in for us.”
Yes, cornerback Zyon McCollum is a sizzling hot name at One Buc Palace.
The 2022 fourth-round pick has elevated his game in a huge way and no longer looks like a raw rookie, and he entered the NFL with uniquely elite athletic ability.
White is right. The Bucs defense is proving to be a deep bunch with playmakers at every level.

According to the quote, Lavonte David is the one who comments on the bench stepping up.

@JamesrunningWilder – that is a mistake from whoever wrote the quote. I heard it come from Whites mouth in the video on Bucs YT channel.

How many thought Devin was either going to hold out or be troublesome this year? I’ll answer for you … practically all of us.
How great has White’s attitude and play been? Just awesome. He was killing dudes in Game 1. His coverage skills are better (not great but better). He’s been an emotional leader. Hard worker. Brings it in the games. Loving this guy, this year. He’s shocked everyone. I’d love to see him in a few blitz packages but I’m no complaining.
October 10th, 2023 at 2:44 pm
@Sly! I wanted him traded before he apologized and recognized his selfishness. Happy with his performance. Wish he was healthier.
October 10th, 2023 at 2:51 pm
White is one the best when blitzing but a liability on covering the pass. Not saying he can’t improve but if he asking for top 5 money, then he better produce in all areas.
October 10th, 2023 at 2:57 pm
i just cannot see how this team can fit white’s contract in next year. i think they let him walk.
what is everyone else’s opinion on this?
October 10th, 2023 at 2:59 pm
Zyon McCollum will be a starting CB for us, if not this year, soon. He didnt look like he belonged on the field last year. Impressive play from this kid this year, and he’s got great size and athletic ability. Jason Licht strikes again in the 4th rd!

Need this win Sunday. Everybody has to be on their A game. Can we for once stop another teams offense on their first possession of the game? Seems like we give up points every game on their first possession.
October 10th, 2023 at 3:30 pm
Unfortunately, one way to afford Devin White is to not resign LVD and go with SVD……I hope LVD has another year and we can afford both him and White….but perhaps not.
October 10th, 2023 at 3:32 pm
Can’t wait to see a little Calijah sprinkled in on D.
October 10th, 2023 at 3:36 pm
Zion is a happy surprise for me. In preseason games he really struggled with his tackling. In the regular season he’s doing better. He needs to keep working on his tackling and constantly improve it.
October 10th, 2023 at 3:46 pm
Wirfs, Mayfield, White, in that order, will be priorities, I would think. Then Winfield, Evans, and LVD. Maybe in that order, too. I wonder how many will get paid?
October 10th, 2023 at 3:49 pm
This team reminds me of the 1979 Bucs…Just kidding, just taking a shot at Rod Munch and his “This team reminds me of the 1990 Bucs” that he uses over and over.
October 10th, 2023 at 3:50 pm
Hope we do not have bigger fish to fry this season than football.
October 10th, 2023 at 4:06 pm
DVOA stats, generally viewed as the best in the business ranks Tampa as the 10the best defense. They rank Detroit as the 3rd best. This one is going to be tough. Their preseason ratings had the Buccaneers last in the NFC South. They have now moved up to third. New Orleans is ranked first on the basis as having by far the easiest schedule in the NFC South. Buccaneers rated as having the 8th toughest schedule remaining in the NFL. Still, they now make the Buccaneers an 8 or 9 win team.
October 10th, 2023 at 4:06 pm
for me, i feel like wirfs and winfield are locks and do your damndest to sign evans and LVD. jury is still out for mayfield and that leaves white odd man out. just my opinion tho.
October 10th, 2023 at 4:09 pm
Coaching is showing its quality. Love the mix of old and new on this years team.
October 10th, 2023 at 4:15 pm
Joe- Always knocking Richard Sherman, dude came in literally off the couch and played a hell of a game then was injured most likely due to not being in football shape. He gave his all for us and he taught our young guys invaluable info, plus he was a perennial pro and one of the greats of our era.
Show some respect, in stead of always knocking him with your cheap shots.
I’m sure you will respond to this by saying you just call it how it is and how Brady wasn’t good at the end either.
Predictable
October 10th, 2023 at 4:16 pm
You are right about Mayfield, 951. I am assuming he leads the team to the Super Bowl or at least NFC South.
I think Bowles regards White as the qb of the defense and maybe even Wirfs’ equal, however.
October 10th, 2023 at 4:20 pm
Forgive the pessimism but…. contract year, I’ve seen it time and time again, when the player in his contract year, looks like a beast. Wow wherd he come from?! Soo frustrating. 😔
October 10th, 2023 at 4:27 pm
Haha Joe in Michigan! Rod is definitely stretching to try and make sure HIS prediction comes true smdh, the 1990 Bucs are just like this team right Rod lol

Oh, Ok. Thanks for the clarification “A Bucs Fan”.
October 10th, 2023 at 5:23 pm
He was a 5th round pick Joe.
October 10th, 2023 at 5:55 pm
@Sly…I agree. White and Evans could’ve both been the ingredients to derail this season with the drama. They took a beat, and put a pin in it for the betterment of the team (this is what I’m going to believe). Again, our players proved they’re team first. They were either smart enough to humble themselves and take some good advice, or wise up on their own.
We’re EXTREMELY lucky to have the caliber of athletes we have on this team.
There just might be some culture starting to brew at One Buc.
October 10th, 2023 at 5:57 pm
With the way bucs coach up cornerbacks they should refocus spending on other areas
October 10th, 2023 at 6:52 pm
the defense is good…and the defense is deep…
zyon is balling…delaney imho is a very nice piece as well…look how both have developed over time…super impressive…
is any one thinking dam we miss smb on the field…
not so sure what’s up with back up safeties if injuries occur…
the d-line rotation is deep af and all the young guys are developing…at different paces, but they all are getting better…all !
i’m a little worried who is behind DW and LVD…so hope for no injuries there…
the d is looking solid and deep…
big game sunday – the lions have a potent offense – the d is gonna have to really clamp down – and the bucs on a whole might have to float around 30 points to take the W
October 10th, 2023 at 7:15 pm
@Jeff P I think the confusion is that the Bucs traded away their 2023 4th round pick to be able to take Zyon in the 5th round of 2022.
October 10th, 2023 at 8:29 pm
The Fighting Schianoes … ‘ Jason Licht strikes again in the 4th rd!’
Before Todd Bowles arrived in 2019, Bucs had drafted the following CBs/DBs since JL arrived in 2014: MJ Stewart (2018), Davis (2018), Hargreaves (2016), Ryan Smith (2016).
After Todd Bowles arrived, Bucs drafted the following CBs/DBs: SMB (2019), Dean (2019), Edwards (2019), Wilcox (2021), McCollum (2022), Hayes (2023).
Starting in 2019, there was a definite change in what we were looking for in our CBs. I have to think that Todd Bowles probably had some influence on that. Also suspect that Arians had quite an input on the offensive draft selections. IOW, I’m of the opinion that the draft process became much more of a GM/Coach partnership than it was in JL’s early years. And it’s paid huge dividends.

Gotta Franchise tag either White or Evans to be able to keep this unit together another year and salary relief
October 10th, 2023 at 8:46 pm
Lard says Wirfs Mayfield and White then name’s Winfield.
Ate you seriously suggesting Winfield will be 4th?
Winfield was just named on someone’s list as the best DB in all of football.
Winfield is second to Wirfs. Period.
He might actually be the highest paid safety in the league, he is that important. And, he is just getting going this year. The picks are coming guaranteed.
October 10th, 2023 at 8:53 pm
QB is most important component on nfl roster.
After that, talent, then youth before age.
Having said that, qb must have favorite weapons.
Evans gets signed.
Whole lot of contract restructuring going to take place if this team
Excels this year which I personally think they will. One day at a time. One day at a time!
October 10th, 2023 at 8:59 pm
If 2/3 of tge players are going to miss a game per year with injuries, quality depth is worth at least one win a year plus special teams at least one win.
October 11th, 2023 at 12:27 am
Hey Diva!
One of those Subs may be your replacement.
Go Bucs!

This team reminds me of the 1979 Bucs…
—————————–
Hey Joe, this Bucs team has both a better O and ST than the 1979 squad did. Believe me, I saw them play in quite a few games including playoffs. They didn’t call it the Sombrero; it’s was called Tampa Stadium. I have enormous respect for White now. His player mentor is LVD. He better get up to snuff. We need it Sunday. Go Bucs!!
October 11th, 2023 at 8:41 am
it not it’s
October 11th, 2023 at 6:43 pm
Winfield is great but he’s tiny and flies around like he is shot out of a gun. Most safeties don’t seem to last that long and are more easily replaced than a left tackle or QB or someone as big and fast as White. I love him but he’s cannon fodder!
