Dave Canales: Quarterbacks Lie
October 9th, 2023Very interesting behind-the-scenes intel from Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales on NFL quarterbacks and self-scouting.
During the bye week, Canales (and Joe assumes all Bucs assistants) took a step back to self-scout and review what is working, what isn’t and how the team can improve in all areas.
Canales said during self-scouting of his offense, he found something that reinforced a belief he formed years ago with Seattle.
Quarterbacks lie, he said.
Canales offered this cool observation while appearing on “The Sick Podcast“ with J.C. Allen of SI.com.
“What has happened for me over the course of years in the NFL is, quarterbacks will kind of lie to you about what they are good at in camp,” Canales began. “Not with their mouth, but with their accuracy and their rhythm and timing of throwing in practice. It’s just different when you get into a game on Sunday, it is. And it is every year.
“And that’s where we had to take an honest look. We have all these accumulated reps on these concepts that just aren’t yielding much for us right now.
“For example, there are a couple of play-action passes that I don’t think we had completed very many in training camp but we are doing fantastic on in the games. And vice-versa.
“There are some things on third downs and the red zone we thought we could count on, but it looks like they just don’t fit us.”
Joe loves hearing this, in part, because it is another example of how Canales is always adjusting, which is very smart.
A couple of other nuggets from Canales.
* He is not disappointed in the run blocking.
* Canales said he needs to adjust better, quicker, with the run game during the games and not wait until halftime. He noted he needs to talk with run game coordinator Harold Goodwin more, earlier in games to make adjustments.
Said Canales, “I just need more reps.”

Canales adjusts – refreshing! He is the opposite of Leftwich.
October 9th, 2023 at 9:09 am
Get that run game cranking out some yards and good things will follow!
October 9th, 2023 at 9:32 am
Correct. Quick adjustment is the key. Our D should pay heed as well.
October 9th, 2023 at 9:33 am
This guy is a breath of fresh air. Do whatever it takes to keep him!
October 9th, 2023 at 9:35 am
The backs have to get f-ing going!
Right now it looks like we will be drafting a back with our 2nd or 3rd round pick next year.

Agree with Lt. Dan, exact opposite of “We do what We do”
October 9th, 2023 at 9:41 am
Are you guys suggesting Brains Leftout did not make adjustments? 😂
October 9th, 2023 at 9:50 am
Mistakes have utility if you view them properly and adjust. Can’t fix anything until you first admit it needs to be fixed…clearly a major problem for the last OC.
Yep Canalas is a breath of fresh air, confident enough to be honest.
October 9th, 2023 at 9:56 am
It’s such an interesting contrast with our former OC. And the fact that he’s transparent about his growth in the role is also a startling contrast. All good things. Hope they continue and yield even better results moving forward.

If Canales ‘is not disappointed in the run blocking’ then he must be disappointed in the RBs because we rank #30 in Total Rushing Yards (348 Yds) & tied for last in Rushing Yards per Carry average (3.0 YPC). Clearly something’s not working.

DR
You beat me to it……..I continue to think it’s the Oline because White, Tucker, Sneak all are unable to run…..
Something is definitely wrong.
October 9th, 2023 at 10:19 am
what is not working is our RB’s cannot make the second level tacklers miss and get those 20+ yard runs. Bucs are last in the league in 20+ yard runs at zero. ROJO is available and no reason in the world not to tender his agent a league minimum offer. ROJO hits the hole hard and has home run capability.
October 9th, 2023 at 10:36 am
Wow. I don’t think I have ever heard this from an OC before. I need more reps. How refreshing is that? A Coach saying I just need some more experience in calling plays with this team. If you can’t be honest with yourself, you dang sure can’t be honest with anyone else. Bravo Coach Canales.

The thing that scares me about Canales is that if he gets some success, he may not be with us long.
October 9th, 2023 at 10:48 am
I liked Rojo when we had him. He hit the whole hard and kept his feet moving through contact, exactly the type of back we need. I just don’t think Rojo is the same player anymore. Don’t think he has the fire for the game like he used to.

He’s (Canales) not going to be here long “as it stands” bad decision from someone who should have known better. Whoever made the 1 year contract decision simply had No Faith in this team doing or going Anywhere this year and Cut their nose off despite of their face.
And unless, he goes back in and negotiates immediately for a longer term contract with Canales, well…… He’s probably gone. Good for Canales or not at this time. It IS the top job and Canales doesn’t seem like the type to “not go for the gold”. And so he probably WILL.
What would you do in his shoes? Just keep sucking hind tit? Maybe some would. But They Aren’t Leaders……
GO GET A BETTER CONTRACT QUICK BUCS!

“How refreshing, he’s the opposite of Leftwich.”
Ya’ll acting like the plays that were called last season were the plays that were actually run. I’m no fan of Leftwich but I can guarantee that Leftwich never audibled to smoke screens a ridiculously high percent of the time or prematurely checked down when the play that was called was run. The biggest problem with Leftwich was that he was not a big and important enough person to be able to hold Brady accountable. Under Arians, Brady generally ran the Arians offense. And when there were issues, Arians called him out for it. Who is Leftwich to be able to call out the GOAT, even when the GOAT was playing like garbage?

Rojo has been cut from 3teams now Bucs, Chiefs and Cowboys yet people here still think he’s the answer. Why can’t this team find a good running back is beyond me. Seems like other teams have a stable of good RBs and we don’t seem to have 1.
October 9th, 2023 at 11:46 am
@Brandon, Leftwich and Brady worked together. They own it together. Whatever the cause was that we didn’t adjust, it’s been corrected.
October 9th, 2023 at 12:13 pm
Adjustment is always the key to success. Whether it’s practice or during the game. This team is getting better and better at figuring out what works. I’m guessing 10-11 wins easy with this OC’s ability to adjust.
October 9th, 2023 at 12:48 pm
it could also be that what works in practice is as much about our defense than our offense.
making adjustments should not be a news story -adjustments are part of life.

ROJO was not cut by Tampa, he finished his contract with Bucs and signed with KC. Rojo was not cut by KC, he finished his contract and signed with Dallas. ROJO was cut by the Cowboys after failing a PED test due to a heart med his doctor prescribed and being suspended for the first two regular season games and cut after that. Glad I could clear that up.

This is refreshing to see. An offense that changes strategy around what your QB is good at and specifically re-evaluating what he ACTUALLY is good at at. Not working on making his footwork match what you want him to be good at. Love to hear it. Also, does not surprise me at all that Mayfield is good at play action, he has always looked good in that respect. Hopefully he keeps it up.
October 9th, 2023 at 1:27 pm
Does anyone know anything about Canales’ contract? I have heard it was for one year but I can’t verify that nor his salary.
October 9th, 2023 at 2:32 pm
Who is Brandon?
October 9th, 2023 at 2:56 pm
Said Canales, “I just need more reps.”
——————————–
You see that remark? He’s saying he needs more experience. He’s not leaving here after this season.
October 9th, 2023 at 3:13 pm
Here’s the reality for lots of what went wrong last season….like it or not, Brady was checked out probably regretted coming back halfway through the season and had one foot out the door to retirement…
It was obvious TB12 wasn’t willing to stand in the pocket and take hits at 45 with a bad Oline and no run game. Hence, the high amount of screens and short passes.
Your delusional if you think the Bucs had any chance at a Superbowl last year with that roster no matter the coach. ….the Bucs reach their ceiling last year with a early playoff exit.
October 9th, 2023 at 6:31 pm
Tbbucs,
Brady by all accounts had plans to be in Miami last year.

“Joe loves hearing this, in part, because it is another example of how Canales is always adjusting, which is very smart.”
Ditto Joe! He obviously is not just throwing darts at a dartboard. Then hoping something works.
Great news!
Go Bucs!

I agree that Canales isn’t going anywhere after this year. You are talking about a guy who has been in the league 13 years before his first OC job. Also, why would he want to go be a head coach for a team that sucks and might not have good management at all? He seems like the guy who wants to BUILD on success and like a man with integrity who isn’t gonna uproot his family, just to be a head coach too early.
The best case scenario is for him to remain with Tampa long enough for Bowles to retire and just Take Over here. Maybe Bowles pulls a BA?
Who knows, but I just don’t see him leaving after this year unless we do something stupid like win a SB and average 37.5 points a game from this point on. Then he could be President as far as I’m concerned.
