Shaq Barrett Explains The Bucs’ Standard

October 7th, 2023

Joe is always intrigued when a Bucs player explains what expectations are inside the walls of One Buc Palace.

Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett went there this week on The Jim Rome Show.

Shaq talked about the Bucs playing to an in-house standard, and Rome asked him to tell the nation what that standard is.

“You gotta be accountable. You gotta have your accountability. You gotta have thick skin to be out there. You gotta be able to take criticism,” Shaq said.

“And you just have to execute your job; Coach is putting us out there expecting us to be able to execute the playcall that he calls. No matter what the play is he knows that he has 11 guys out there that he has faith in. So when that time comes for you to make your play, you make your play. Stuff happens; you might miss a tackle every now and again, but we don’t want that. We want people that’s able to come in and be able to rise to the occasion. And when it’s time to make that big play, be there and make the play. So far this season, there’s not too many people on our defense that haven’t made a play yet for our team.”

If Joe were translating Shaq, Joe would say the Bucs’ standard is to shutup, man up, work hard, pay attention, do exactly as your told, and you better rise up to execute at a high level when your opportunity arises.

Joe thought it was interesting that Shaq didn’t talk about playing for teammates or fighting for each other; his focus was on accountability and execution.

To many of the players in the NFL, focus and accountability is fighting for each other, and others no.

BTW pretty cool to see Baker on Pat Mac show for the Red River showdown. Do not ever remember something like that with a Buc QB during mid season. Yeah you would see Brady pop up sometimes, but not really like this. Very Cool.

Joe, you are a better man than me. I don’t know how you do it, listening to Jim Rome is worse than being water boarded.

Hey Sas..the way Shaq speaks English he probably meant it as it was misspelled. lol

Good attitude for any athlete to have me thinks.

    Go Bucs!

The accountability comes when they’re watching game film as a team

What team isn’t told to be accountable and execute when your number is called?
I do like how many young guys are playing. Bodes so well for the future of this team.
Was listening to a Florida Gators analyst say how smart it is for Napier to
be playing a lot of true freshman. The thought process is that in a couple years, when these good ball players are older, they will have enough experience to contend. A lot of coaches will play Juniors and Seniors because they want to win now, and then they graduate and your younger guys have no experience.
Sometimes you have to bite the bullet for future years.
Same principle with REBUILDING. I can see now why the Bucs hate to call it a Rebuild. That comes straight from BA. The core of your team has to be good enough to get the rookies involved and still win, and that is what the Bucs are doing. I’m proud to think we might have stolen a past #1 overall pick, after out own pick pre BA and staff flunked with Winston. The O Line only needs 1 or 2 to be good for a couple years. Then you have to pay them through. ME13 is one of my Top 5 favorite players for the Bucs ALL TIME, but unless he wants to finish a Buc and he has chemistry with Mayfield he doesn’t want to lose, I don’t see us keeping him. We HAVE to continue to draft well and coach up rookies to be good for years. Spread the money around where you MOST need it, but seeing the offense still move the ball without Mike told me a lot about where this team is.
    Let’s go whoop those kitties!!!

AMEN! He’s just too cute with have a take and don’t suck and his nicknames are frequently absurd!!! I grew up in Cincinnati and NOBODY there ever refers to the town as the “Nati”. In fact the common version of a “cute” nickname is Cincy, again not used much by natives, but hey Romie has to be different.

Hmmm, wonder if that’s a reflection of their head coach. Just wonderin, that’s all.

There is so much philosophy in that 1 quote it boggles the mind. It’s easy to see Todd Bowles philosophy all over that one.

‘Just execute your job’. That’s Bowles right there. Protect your gap. Make the tackle. Make the takeaway when the opportunity strikes.

Shaq puts ACCOUNTABILITY front & center in his quote, and follows it with COACH’S EXPECTATIONS. Execute the playcall; make YOUR play. Awesome piece Joe; thanks.

    Great….now about that JTS guy.

  14. Allen Lofton Says:

Accountability and execution – isn’t that true for any job. This year the Bucs have no Primadona’s. Todd Bowles is just that and the players are a reflection of him. DO YOUR JOB!

    I’m guessing Swaggy Baker wouldn’t like this….

Some people hold professional writers to standards, not even high standards, but just simple middle school English standards. Obviously, you don’t care. I do. Too many people here want to incorrectly call out the team for not starting their favorite players, not cutting guys they mistakenly think aren’t good, or blame the training staff for injuries that aren’t preventable, but asking professional writers to show mastery of a 6th grade standard is too much? STFU.

Swaggy is sadly part of a long list. Buc fans have had to put up with a lot in the past.

I’ve got several degrees in both English Literary and Linguistical Analysis. I also was a professional proofreader for several years. I don’t get hung up on language snobbery. I get on here cos there are educated writers and fans which I learn off of, and laugh at. With today’s news, we need all the laffs we can get!

  19. ModHairKen Says:

Jim Rome’s lame schtick and the Bros who spend all day writing a script then reading it like wooden Indians. Hours of inanity. His best moment ever was getting dumped on his back by Jim Everett.

Love Shaq, playing with a heavy heart and coming off an Achilles he is playing well. He may not have the sack totals he wants yet but you can’t say that when he is out there he isn’t giving it his all. Looking forward to the rest of the season with hopefully a little less JTS and more YaYa.
