Trey Palmer Discusses Game-Winning Touchdown

October 1st, 2023

Talks touchdown catch.

One of the receivers who stepped up in the void left by the Bucs’ best receiver in franchise history was rookie Trey Palmer. And it wasn’t an easy catch.

On the second play after an Antoine Winfield fumble recovery with the ball on the slimy Saints-1 on second down, Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield looked right and saw Palmer trying to break free of slimy Saints corner Isaac Yiadom.

Right from the snap Yiadom was on top of Palmer. The rookie turned right and fought free getting a little bit of separation. Just enough to jump high and haul the ball in.

“I just saw ball and get up and get ball,” Palmer said of the play. “My number got called and I made the play.”

Joe thought maybe Palmer was juggling the ball as he went out of bounds. No way he told Joe.

As far as having to step up to fill the void of Mike Evans leaving the game with a hamstring, Palmer said he didn’t notice.

“Really, I didn’t even notice, to be honest,” Palmer said.

That wasn’t a knock at Evans at all. Palmer said his mentality is to lock in on his responsibilities to the point he has no idea who is or isn’t on the field. That’s what he did on the touchdown catch and that’s what he does on every play, he said.

“I was just out there doing my job and doing my fundamentals,” Palmer said.

Palmer’s touchdown turned out to be the game-winner.

Loved seeing the rookie wr’s show out. Offense was better in the second half. Maybe BM spends too much time looking for ME.

I never saw a bobble. It was good to see Palmer get a TD (in front of his family from Kenner?).

We need to keep feeding Palmer and Thompkins. Palmer looks like ME13 in contested catches. Thompkins is really finishing his runs and catches and seems to like hitting the DBs. Thompkins’s TD catch was crazy, it seemed like he was in the air for 10 yards.

Great play by Trey. But I keep wondering why Mike doesn’t get any fades in the red zone

  5. ModHairKen Says:

They stepped up today. Him and Thomkins.

On 3rd and 1 can we please sneak the ball. Three times today we handed the ball off 5 yards back and got stopped. It’s maddening to watch. Philly does it to perfection and we have a stud q.b . Baker is a bad man. I am screaming at the TV . Also when a non QB. comes in newsflash, he’s gonna run. Watching on television you can see it coming a mile away. They must see it different at field level. Love my Buccaneers. Lifelong fan.

Thompkins was so buried in the endzone yet keeps trying to get open and finally does then makes the catch and scores!

  8. Crickett Baker Says:

Palmer has always said, “See ball, get ball”. Someone along the line taught him well. I am looking forward to his growth. Aside from the numerous penalties I really saw complimentary football and an exciting game to watch. I have more faith in Canales, too. He also seemed to pick up his game.

    THOMPKINS IS SPECIAL.

He’s such a great little route runner. Palmer is solid as well but Thompkins looks truly special.

It’s so good to see Palmer and the other young guys stepping up! It’s definitely making this season enjoyable to watch! So far so good!!!

  12. dmatt Says:

Thompkins is an example of dynamite comes in small packages. He’s small, yet tough as nails. He does not evade contact, he embraces it.

  13. Richard Says:

Palmer had two catches for six yards, one was a TD catch. Let’s not crown Palmer as rookie of the year. He had a nice grab for a TD.

  14. Les Says:

Would like to see some plays to show off Palmers speed ! Go routs .
