Big Play Mike Evans

October 1st, 2023

Look out!

Joe always knew Bucs stud receiver Mike Evans is a home run hitter. Now, Joe has more credible, respectable data to back it up.

Over at NextGenStats, the numbers pulled from sensors players wear and embedded in equipment came up with the best “big play” receivers in the game today. No. 4 was Evans (just a hair behind Chris Olave of the slimy Saints. (Cheetah Hill and Justin Jefferson were Nos. 1-2.)

… It’s become evident that the deep ball is still a significant part of Evans’ game — he’s tied with Tyreek Hill for the most deep touchdowns through three weeks (two). His 130 receiving yards on deep passes are the fourth-most in the league, coming on the same amount of targets (six) and receptions (three) as Chris Olave. Evans has also been an advantage for Tampa after reeling in receptions, particularly from a wide alignment. His 106 yards after the catch and +80 receiving yards over expected both rank second from that alignment.

Even if Mayfield’s start to the season proves to be fool’s gold, it’s apparent after 10 years that Evans’ success through the air isn’t necessarily dependent on who’s throwing the ball.

This is why it is so important for Evans to not allow mouthy slimy Saints corner Marshon Lattimore to get in his head today. If the Bucs lose Evans, then the slimy Saints will take out Chris Godwin.

Joe likes Trey Palmer but isn’t sure he’s quite ready to step into Evans’ shoes.

Joe likes how finally Evans is getting his deserved props. Unfortunately, it takes NextGen Stats to help Evans. Everyone else has their head up someone’s backside (Odell Beckham!) because of a long-ago catch or because they can play… fantasy! (Yes, Joe knows Evans spent years as a fantasy football darling.)

He still is a fantasy darling. I draft him on all of my teams.

Last year against Carolina. Brady to a wide open Mike Evans, who is ten yards behind everybody. Perfect pass—-DROP! You Tube it. It’s a horrible DROP!
Last week on the first possession. Mayfield deep to Mike Evans—-DROP!
Later in the game. Mayfield to Mike Evans in the end zone —-DROP!
If I had the time I could fill this page with Mike Evans drops. When he first came up many on this site wanted to run him out of town. Why? DROPS!
Chris Godwin had a spell where he dropped three passes 2-3 years ago.
Other than that his hands have been glue.
Game on the line. Who do you trust more to catch a ball for a first down?
Look. I don’t know him, but Mike Evans appears to be a nice guy. And I salute him for it. But nice guys don’t win football games with their off field benevolence.

Some people wear their ignorance like a cape.

If 47 of his 60 receiving yards total in a game are made in the 4th quarter, down 3 scores, and defense in soft coverage I don’t think a 1000 yard season will be that exciting to him.

I can understand a receiver having to elevate and fully extend for a 50/50 ball but if any given ball has a 50/50 chance of being up in the stratosphere it could mean the end of his season or even his career.

Had it been Lattimore defending the one hand ally oop pass Monday Night he may not have extended the courtesy of making sure Evans landed on his feet before making the tackle. Blankenship of the Eagles could have easily stepped aside and let Evans fall on his back instead of carrying him on his until he got his footing.

Only thing that might be bad for Evans’ Bank is Baker.

  5. TB Says:

Some people don’t know football, everybody drops a pass dummy ,Evans is the best hands down

  6. Capt2fish Says:

Not bad for a guy who has a qb who can only throw checkdowns and INTs (sarcasm font)

  7. Obvious Says:

    @D Cone

Agreed. I’m not seeing “much” dropped in anybodies “bread basket”. But then to be fair, I haven’t watched many games. (I DON’T have dvr because I don’t get my services from good Ole cable tv) The reason however is a work schedule I committed to.

Back at the ranch, the replays I have seen don’t show an accurate qb. It shows passes in “general areas”.

I AM NOT SOLD on baker being the guy. And on a more important point, I AM NOT SOLD ON THIS OFFENSIVE SCHEME! Under 200 yards combined and totaled yards in any and EVERY given game thus far IS NEVER GOING TO GET US ANYWHERE EXCEPT AT A LOUSY PICK COME DRAFT TIME!

I’m saying that ultimately IT’S THE OFFENSIVE SCHEME THAT IS GOING TO RUIN THIS YEAR NO MATTER WHO’S BEHIND CENTER! THIS IS NOT WORKING AND IT’S DOOMING US INTO A FAMILIAR OBSCURITY! NO THANK YOU VERY MUCH THANK YOU…. Somebody BETTER do something to change this FAST or ELSE!

(Under 200 yards of total offense) WHO’S BRIGHT IDEA IS THIS PIECE OF WORK? I suppose we All already know it’s the Combined philosophy of Canales and Bowles.. NOT INSPIRING!

Vegas makes the Big Bucks for a reason….. He is coaching as if He Has NO Place being in that role. I SURE HOPE HE FIGURES THAT HE NEEDS TO GET BETTER “HIMSELF” (Canales) AND FAST!

  8. John Sinclear Says:

Unfortunately, we cannot put the coaches in pads, so the players have to own their own failures.

Last week – 41 yards rushing
    – 133 yards passing
    – 174 total yards in offense

Thats with Evans and Godwin, plus some competent tight ends. That’s with Mayfield running for his life, not for yards.

The offensive line cannot run block, and they cannot pass protect. Other than that, they’re pretty good.

(“Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?”)

We could also fill out a page with his spectacular catches that few wrs can make.
I love it when people act like he isn’t the best wr to play for Tampa.

Joe you jinxed Evan’s with this article. I hope he’s not out for an extended period. If he didn’t get hurt he was on his way to a big game against lattimore
